I recently ordered the Butter Chicken Bowl from Salt and Pepper Grill and was disappointed with the experience. The chicken did not taste fresh, and the sauce lacked the rich Indian spices and flavors that I typically expect in a traditional butter chicken dish. The sauce was bright red rather than the creamy yellow-orange color commonly associated with butter chicken, and the flavor was noticeably different from what I am accustomed to. Unfortunately, the meal did not satisfy my appetite, and I was still hungry afterward. I decided to try the restaurant because it was conveniently located near a meeting I was attending at Howard University. SOLID Indian food for the most part with a few minor critiques. This is more of a cafe style restaurant, where you go up to the counter to order your food and they'll give you your food in a tray if you're eating there. Absolutely no frills and there wasn't much heating indoors, but the hearty and delicious food warmed our souls quite quickly. One of my friends wanted to give this place a try due to his recent Indian cuisine cravings, and I'm so glad our group came here for a family-style dinner this past Monday. GARLIC NAAN - 3.95 The four of us got two orders of the garlic naan. Each order had one big piece of naan (that fit on a 10" paper plate). It was hot and fresh. My only critique is that it could be a lot more garlicky. Besides the bit of herbs and slight garlic taste, I'm not sure if I'd pay an extra $2 for the garlic naan next time. Either way, it was a great carb switch if I wasn't feeling the basmati rice at the moment. GOAT BIRYANI - 16.95 With six different biryani options, the one we ended up choosing was goat because it's not a common meat choice at most restaurants. The goat biryani was indeed... the GOAT. There were so many pieces of goat in the biryani, which was seasoned well with an ample amount of spices - definitely a flavor bomb every bite. The yogurt sauce was tasty. My only quip was that the rice was a bit too wet and I prefer a drier biryani rice. Overall, we'd recommend because the goat was on point. LAMB KORMA - 16.95 This curry blew me away. Korma is usually my top choice, and this one was phenomenal. The korma was so creamy and nutty, it was so perfect. On top of that, the lamb was plenty and it was so tender. The usual "gamey" flavors of lamb aren't there, and it just, wow. I can confidently say we were the most impressed by the lamb korma here. Even when we finished it, I had to really stop myself from licking the plate clean. This entree was the clear winner for me and I'd highly recommend the korma to anyone who loves a delicious creamy sauce. CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA - 15.95 I'm more used to a savory chicken tikka masala, but this one leaned on the sweeter side - and I liked it! It was cooked nicely with plenty of bell peppers and onion, giving it an extra kick. While the flavors were great, I just wasn't as impressed with this entree compared to the other ones we got. If you want something on the "safe" or mainstream side (and you like a sweeter curry), I'd recommend this! PALAK PANEER - 14.95 Another one of my favorites, and it was done decently well here. I liked that the paneer was seared to give it a bit more flavor. I enjoyed the palak paneer here, but I can't say it was anything extraordinary. Definitely above average, but not the best I've had. If you love spinach and paneer, then this one is for you! The portion sizes here are pretty good for DC pricing. They give you lots of rice here. You will not leave this restaurant hungry. I found this small Indian restaurant while visiting Howard University on a Saturday afternoon to referee rugby match. They have a very large menu with all of the Indian basics. Even though I was alone, the food smelled so good that I decided to order 3 entrees to go. I ordered the Salt and Pepper Special combination, which came with a generous pile of different meats, including some chewy sausage-like things, some spicy lamb, and some excellent tandoori chicken (the meat was accompanied by some chickpeas in a sauce and spinach with cheese cubes in it). I also ordered a lamb vindaloo and a dal makhani (lentils). Both were excellent, but they are not joking when they say that their vindaloo is spicy -- it made me cry on at least two of the occasions I ate some of it (still have leftovers sitting in the refrigerator for tonight). The rice and the naan were also excellent. Total bill was just over $60. read more

Admittedly, I was a little leery of this sketch-looking Indian takeout place, but I kind of think Yelp has this one right. That is some pretty respectable food. The takeout I ended up with was quite flavorful and filling. It wasn't ready immediately (which in a way gives me more confidence that some effort went into preparing it), but it was what I wanted. For one thing, I checked the box to make my chickpeas very spicy, a topic which I am invested in but also rather jaded about. But someone definitely put something hot in there; this was the sinus-clearing type, not the mild tingle just to let you know they tried. I was expecting mushy overcooked chickpeas, but if anything, they were a shade tough, though not problematically so. They've also developed the nice solution of rendering their bhatura (normally one huge fried bread) as several little bhaturas, and in general did a competent job with secure takeout containers (not everyone does). Their chili bhaji comes with stems still on and seeds still in, but I got some pretty tasty ones. Altogether, I ended up with several meals worth of heathy stuff plus fried stuff (okay, mostly fried stuff), which is pretty much what I would hope for from Indian takeout. This place is pretty impressive considering the location is far from the many Indian and Pakistani eateries in the outlying DC suburbs. With that said, it is fast food Indian style with styrofoam plates and pre-made choices. The prices reflect the fast nature and preparation, and the decor is of a similar nature. If you are craving Indian food, this is a good choice if you want it fast. There was a steady stream of all sorts of people, so that means the food is going to be pretty fresh to keep up with demand- and it was fresh! I do not like when Indian food tastes in fresh, canned, frozen and/or as though it's been sitting around too long. However, the food proportions are not my favorite. They give twice as much rice as entree, so then there is leftover rice. The food may cater to clientele, so maybe most like the saltiness of the food? I was not impressed with the potato flavoring, but the cauliflower in the aloo gobi masala was fresh and well flavored in the sauce with tomatoes, onions and spices that included a few thin julienned fresh ginger pieces and sprinklings of fresh cilantro. It was made vegan by request, which was nice. The potatoes had a flavor belying their other cooking first before added to that dish. I might ask to have no potatoes, but I am sure the response would be confusion. The vegetable samosa was a great tasting peas and potatoes combination at a fair price- this place is definitely great for price. I liked there were more peas than potatoes and the fried crisp dough was great. Freshly fried, so that was awesome. The sauces were very nice- a spicy cilantro and mint (? a bit?) green sauce was great, and the tamarind sauce was good. I used both up on my potatoes that were lacking flavor in the entree. If in the area, your craving for Indian and Pakistani fast food will be satisfied. They will adjust your order to be vegan. Super tasty and fast! Dined in with a friend on a Monday night. Was happy to find they were open and pretty empty when we arrived at 6:45. There were two other sets of diners when we left but most people show up for take out. Their other location on 14th is closed on Mondays - much like many restaurants! We got samosa chat to share, they kind enough to put the yogurt in the side. This dish was a little soupy and would have done better in a real plate or bowl instead of a paper plate. That was really my only complaint of the whole meal. The plates. The mains came in metal bowls but everything else used paper plates which got a bit soggy by the end of the meal. The lamb saag was great- nice but pieces a few pieces were very fatty... The masala was not my favorite comparatively but still very good. The garlic naan was nice but I wanted more! I've been walking past this spot for years as my barbershop is only a few stores down. Yet when I went in for my cut today, I thought maybe I should try something different. I'm so glad I did. Went in during lunch. Asked the cashier what his favorite lamb dish was--he recommended Lamb Karahi. So I ordered it with the garlic naan. It was amazing. Just the right amount of spice. Tasty veggies. Delicious lamb. I'm somewhat embarrassed to say it was so good that I grabbed dinner there too. DC isn't known for its Indian food per se - we're much more an Ethiopian sorta town - but Salt n Pepper Grill is doing its best to hold the title down. you walk in and it already smells like Indian spices of the best sort. They have place enogh to sit down and eat, but this place is more of a carry-out style. This place likes to serve their carry-out food hot hot hot! So hot in fact, that it can burn. So take your time with this one. Once the food won't scald your fingers or tonuge, it's truly tasty. They give plenty and I mean plenty of gently seasoned rice which mostly stand on its own the next morning. We had a vegetarian in our company, so I am only reviewing based on the "Vegetarian Specialties" of that evening. Portions are good, and three people with three entrees was plenty, although the price came out to just shy of $50 all things counted. Garlic Naan - Garlic. Naan. Need I say more? Order comes per the slice, so you'll likely need at least one per person. They are large slices of naan and well garlicked. Definitely a must. Daal Masoor - Do yourself a favor and order one of these. I honestly don't know what they put in the sauce but I was licking my fingers (and maybe the plate, I won't say) about how good this was. Its delicate and fragrant without getting lost in the cream of the sauce. I would go back and order another two of these if I had known how much I would like it! Aloo Gobi Masala - As a fan of cauliflower, this dish was just dandy. I think they put in something like jalapenos or other pepper that gave it a pleasant kick, but be careful as its the sort of spice that creeps up on you without you feeling it until your throat is begging you to slow down. But what would Indian food be without spicy? If you like it hot and spicy, I would recommend this. Palak Paneer - Probably the weakest of the three dishes. I found it a little watery, and neither creamy nor spicy enough. Could it have been an off day? Sure. But entirely forgettable as of this weekend's meal. Me and my mom were craving Indian food, and came across this place. The lady at the counter was super nice and helpful with what to get. My mom got the lamb tikka masala, and I got the butter chicken. We also got 2 orders of garlic bread, and everything was absolutely AMAZING. We dined in, and all the food was super hot, and flavorful. They also gave us a big bowl of rice, and tons of garlic naan. The naan had a bit of a lemony taste to it, which I felt canceled out the garlic flavor, but overall it was really good. We took it all home, and are definitely eating the left overs tomorrow. On any given day, you can choose from vegetarian or non-veg entrees. I went for the chicken curry, which he said would be a little spicier than everything else. It was. I felt a little let down by the other Yelp reviews of this place. I was really hoping for spicy, authentic Pakistani fare (I've lived in Pakistan, so have a good idea of what is and isn't authentic). Best rated Indian food in DC? Yes, please. With high expectations, my wife and two friends ventured up to NW DC from Capitol Hill to try this place's naan and tikka masala. My friend and I had it in our minds that this place would be a nice sit down restaurant so we were surprised to find a whole-in-the-wall restaurant with fluorescent lighting. You order your food next to a buffet of Indian food, which doesn't give you the best impression, but wait until you get the food. The naan is for sure the best I've had in DC perfectly hot and buttered. I loved the tikka masala, but it was a little more sweet than you are probably used to (My wife and friend didn't enjoy it, but I loved it!). My wife and friend got the biryani and enjoyed it. We later decided to dine in-- just in case the food was sub par; we didn't want to be stuck with fifty dollars in less than stellar Indian delivery. We ended up trucking into this place around 7pm last night, and i created a yelp account (while still in the restaurant) solely for the purpose of giving this place five stars! The decor is lackluster, but makes up for it in made to order deliciousness. The owner took the time to learn my name, and referred to me by it for the rest of the evening. He was super nice--accommodating, attentive, and offered lots of vegetarian selections. the food was a party in my mouth-- and for cheap! we had the palak paneer, garlic naan and baingan bhartha, and it was aMAYzing-- i also heard that the tandoori chicken was "falling off the bone." i checked out the plates of the folks around us, and it all looked good-- especially the paneer pakora (will definitely try it next time!)! we walked out with enough leftovers for two more meals- the portions are huge and you can definitely share. they offer delivery in the parkview/petworth/columbia heights area, and the food's great-- i am so glad this place is in my neighborhood! read more

Customer service is always good. I order mostly for delivery ($25 min), but occasionally I will pick up an order or eat inside if I'm on the go. The dining area is really small and always clean. Ordered takeout from here the other night. The food took a little longer than expected to arrive and my thoughts are as follows: -garlic naan is too small for $3.75. I can get a piece that is twice as large for $2.50 at other places -butter chicken portion is good for the price -meal does come with rice, though it's not stated -I ordered the "mild" butter chicken and it wasn't very spicy (good thing) but it was weirdly sweet (bad thing) Probably will not order again. read more

THE LAMB KARAHI LITERALLY THE BEST THING ON THE MENU. If you like spice this is the food to get. Now I will warn it will have your nose running. This place serves great food and the staff are always friendly. I've ordered from here many times, and I've never been disappointed. Their veggie samosas are great. Other favorites are aloo chat, veggie biryani (flavorful and spicy), pakora, garlic naan... the portions are also big, so we often share the biryani and get a couple sides. And usually have leftovers. The venue itself isn't maybe the most promising, and with some improved lighting it might feel more suitable for staying and eating. But the food is awesome.
