A friend and I celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving last week with turkey and vegetables from Hussey…read moreButchers. A truly delicious meal with everything already prepared so it was simply a case of putting in the oven or saucepans. Meat was succulent and vegetables were scrumptious. Can certainly recommend.

While we have some truly spectacular butcher shops here in the Bay Area, I must say that the charm and authenticity of Hussey's is on a completely different plane. I mean, you do have to actually board a plane if you want to go there, but it's really a destination level butcher. Their sister store, just down the lane a bit, Hussey's Grocery doesn't have a review written yet - but I'll get to it. I was enthralled from the very first - there's a truly Locals Only Pub that serves Sunday Roast with all the Fixin's - one of Wayne's brothers works the bar there and rotates in to Husseys as well. There's a third brother - I don't believe I had the pleasure of making his acquaintance; most of my interaction was with Wayne. First day in - he humored me: let me take video on an actual camera of him breaking down a beautiful cut of meat for my requested Steak Tartare. His knife techniques are surgically precise and beautiful to behold! I also picked up three house made sausages: pheasant and plum, I believe - or perhaps it was pork and plum. Delicious - perfection. They practice whole animal butchery, and will graciously pause to fill a last-minute order/request or head back to the walk-ins from a primal cut. The butcher block is stunning - Wayne says they never stay 'round much because they're sanded down daily as part of their food safety practice of course, and people just queue up to purchase them. When you do pop by Hussey's, you will note that their eggs are pastured and they do not refrigerate them. You can also carry parcels from the Grocery to the Butcher shop and vice versa on the honor system, and they'll ring you up at either spot. I miss it so much!

The service was great, I emailed after I placed the order to ask them to gift wrap the box and they immediately replied saying it was no problem. They have set boxes but I ordered my own assortment based of what I thought our family would like and boy, was this gift a hit! Their meat selection was phenomenal and so good my uncle now wants to order all of their meat from here. My husband wants to take trip back to the UK just so he can try their steaks! I found the prices to be really reasonable for the product you are getting and the service impeccable. I would definitely order from them again and again!

Then 10 days later a neighbour in the road opposite left the package on the door step (still in the box now covered in blood and full of flies) saying they had been on holiday and only just got back (so much for the driver having proof of delivery!). Only at this point did they offer a refund/re-delivery. Disastrous customer service......Matt you should have offered a full refund and the product for all OUR inconvenience rather that stating how much time YOU had spent on this. For those interested let me know and we'll post the email exchanges.

Before I began, do not come here for the horrible service, come for the great selection. I cannot…read morebegin to emphasize how rude the staff is. When you enter in, they don't even mention they will take your temperature. They just point the thermometer at your head. I needed help finding something and was asking one of the employees, he just said "uhhhh..." and after a very long awkward pause without any other response, and not even checking with a coworker or anything else, I just decided to find it myself. At check out the lady asked if I had a membership and I said no and asked if I could sign up. She then said that it isn't available right now and when I asked when she just gave a hard glare and abruptly responded "I don't know." Nothing else. So yeah, it's pretty terrible. This Chinese supermarket is right across the street from the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford. You just take the escalator to the first floor, exit out of the shopping centre, cross the bridge, walk down the steps, cross the street and enter into the shopping hall. It will be located to the right of the entrance. Those who live in Romford or anywhere before Stratford will be grateful if you're craving proper Chinese noodles, vegetables, fresh seafood or something authentic. The prices here are pretty standard and not terribly expensive. If you can catch the fast train from Romford your trip will be less than 10 minutes from there! It's got basically everything you need, produce, but could not find shiitake mushrooms. Loads of protein options, rice options, sauces of all sorts, snacks of every variety, noodles/soups, even a selection of different asian cuisine items and a frozen section. Although as reviews from a Google have complained about the terrible service, which is basically true. Like no surprise there. But the selection is excellent. Come for the great produce and choices, and again, not the horrible service.

This place used to be Mamas and Papas and unfortunately for Loon Fung, the shop space is so tiny that the aisles is way too close (just like it is in China Town) so only two people can just about squeeze past each other. Prices are a lot more outrageous than their other branches i.e. China Town and the Docklands one near Woolwich Ferry crossing. They had about 4-5 tills operating at the checkouts. There is a hot bun counter and a hot food takeaway oven (which heats pre-made meals). I guess if you have no car, and you need a spot of Chinese shopping, this would be a convenient place for you. Of course, the range of food available here is vastly limited as the shop space is so tiny!
