We had dinner this past Saturday night at around 7:30pm without a reservation. The wait was only about 15 minutes. We ordered two entrees with a side of rice, which all came out about 5 minutes after we ordered- we were thrilled to eat our food so quickly. The dishes included: Burmese Curried Pork: It was quite spicy since we asked for the standard level of spice. My friend indicated he didn't want "gringo spice" so spicy hot we got (unintentional rhyme). Beads of sweat formed on my forehead during the entire dinner but luckily it wasn't a first date, and I had a tissue handy. The pork was moist, and the sauce was very flavorful. This was recommended by the waiter- it was my favorite dish. Basil Chili Beef: Another dish that was recommended by the waiter. It was not as flavorful as the pork but equally spicy. The strips of beef could have been more tender. Burmese- Indian Basmati Rice: It complemented the two dishes well but could have been a bit bigger in terms of portion. The cucumber-infused tap water was refreshing. It may have helped temper the spiciness of the dishes. The waiter was attentive and friendly. The restaurant itself was modern and nicely decorated with glass chandeliers. We sat next to the sliding windows that were opened for fresh air. Overall, I liked the ambiance of the restaurant. The curry dish was really delicious. I'm giving the restaurant three stars instead of four stars, as I learned afterwards that they use MSG. However, it appears that they offer the option to make certain dishes without MSG. If this is the case the next time I dine here, I will revise my review. read more

Discovered this wonderful establishment while attending the San Carlos Wine and Art festival. It was my first time enjoying Burmese food and I was totally won over. The cucumber water was a nice touch, the staff were knowledgeable and helpful and the decor was very nice. Started with palata which I enjoyed for the light, delicate flavor. Then had the tea leaf salad on recommendation of the server which was amazing with very complex texture and flavor. Finally had the garlic noodles with tofu which were very good, particularly with the sauce on the side. Price is steep, but worth it in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal, and I have leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Will definitely return when I am in the area. read more

I went here for lunch and loved the food, wine list, and location. It's in DT San Carlos and it's a smaller restaurant, but they make really good use of the area. The wine list was pretty decent, but not upscale - about two pages. They only serve wine/beer, they don't have a bar. Ideally I wanted to doc this place down to three stars because the service wasn't all that good. The waiter was super nice, but brought out the wrong wine and forgot a full dish. The food was good enough that it made up for the service. I think the waiter was just new, but he made some pretty big mistakes. If I was on a date or even a business dinner I would have been pissed, but it was a casual lunch so anyways I will move on. The food is wonderful and spicy. The ambiance is classy/cozy. Worth trying out and I will go back. read more

I make sure to hit this restaurant every time I'm in the bay area. You MUST get the tea leaf salad - it might sound a little strange, but it's by far the best salad I've ever had (it's really savory, not herbal as you might imagine). In addition to that, you have to try the yellow bean tofu (creamier and more flavorful than soy tofu), and the coconut rice. The service is generally lovely, but it's one of those restaurants where the staff is almost attentive to a fault (I.e. I'm afraid to drink from my water glass because I know the moment I set it down someone's going to rush over and refill it). It makes me a bit uncomfortable, but that's just me. Overall really great Burmese food, make sure to make reservations on the weekend, as it gets busy! read more

We have eaten in and gotten carry out from Rangoon Ruby about a half dozen times and, while the prices are a bit steep, the food rarely disappoints. The last time we did carry out we got Lettuce Wraps (good), Garlic Noodles w/Pork (good), Shrimp and Eggplant (very good), Garlic Chili Green Beans (great), and my new favorite dish - Pumpkin Chicken Stew (great). This all rolled up to $88 for two people, but there were plenty of leftovers for the next day. Food quality here is very good and when you select "hot" the dished are definitely HOT. And we like spicy food. I can't imagine what "very hot" tastes like! read more

I have not been this mad during a meal out in A LOOONG time, that is, until tonight. Zero stars for our waiter, five stars for the manager, and four stars for the food. I know that averages out to three stars but I'm trying to make a point I'll say a few good things first: tasty food, especially the pureed catfish soup and pumpkin stew, and a nice and understanding manager. The seating is comfortable and the dining room is well appointed enough. We were a party of eight without a reservation on a Saturday night, and they were able to seat us provided we give the table back by 7. That I appreciated. Now for the rude service from our waiter. Watch out for the heavy set man with dark hair. We got zero smile from this guy, straight face and stone-cold the whole time. He made all of us feel like we should feel lucky he's even serving us. Fine, maybe he was having a bad day, until I see him laughing and chatting it up with the couple next to us. Since there were eight of us, this guy was going to automatically get 20% gratuity! Hell no I'm not paying that for this attitude. So I told the manager about the rudeness and she offered to take the gratuity off, which was very nice of her. I don't need my waiter to be my BFF. I've been to many restaurants where the wait staff just took our order and gave us our food without any chit chat, and I never minded those because they did their job and they didn't make us feel unwelcomed. This waiter tonight however made us feel uncomfortable. Details below: My parents and their friends and grandchild arrived before us. When my husband, son, and I finally arrived maybe five ten minutes later, the waiter came, stone faced and all, asking if we want anything to drink or any appetizers to start. No "welcome!" or any other normal niceties. Since I just got there, I said just give us water for now and we need a minute. He seemed displeased (?!?!) That set the tone for the entire evening. He didn't disappear on us and came to take our order and gave us our food, even tossed and mixed the tea leaf salad for us. But all with NO SMILE and the service just seemed forced. Again, I was not going to complain about that because maybe the poor guy was having a bad day. Until I see how he acted with others. I have never felt so unwelcomed at a restaurant in a long time. I'll go back because of the food and the manager, but if I feel unwelcomed again I'll never go back. read more

The food was really good. They give you a really small portion of rice for about 3 dollars and the place brings out food family style so I suggest you get a variety of things because you'll want to share don't make my mistake and get very similar plates. It's a bit pricy but located in downtown. read more

I really like this restaurant. The interior design of the restaurant is important to me - this place hits high mark for me in a design, sofisticated and chic. Food is delicious and menu selection is good. Service is usually rushed and not attentive, but they get things delivered and answer questions when you have them. read more

The hostess and manager greeted us with a smile and we had a great table by the window. We ordered the parata, mango chicken, eggplant curry, lamb kebab and sesame chicken. The teen in our group inhaled the sesame chicken, and the others polished off their plates as well. Tasty food, good service, nice atmosphere. Only a few tiny quibbles in that the curry with the paratha was a little thin and the lamb had some gristle, but it didn't stop us from having a nice time. I'd go back. read more

Rangoon Ruby was recommended by a coworker for a team dinner last Wednesday night. Last minute reservations (made from the car on the ride over) for 8 were graciously accommodated, and the table was ready early. Our waiter, Michael, was friendly, helpful on menu suggestions, and very solicitous throughout our dinner - as was the entire staff that supported our table. Our drinks had already been served, and the appetisers started coming to the table BEFORE we had finished ordering! We ordered a variety of appetizers, main courses and desserts. The portions were generous without being too much, very little was left on the table at the end of the evening, and everything was well prepared and well presented. I don't know what was best... the appetizers, the main courses or the desserts... everything was wonderful! We had a birthday celebration within the team that night and the sparking birthday dessert was delicious and fun! The team loved the family style service, as it not only allowed for us all to try different dishes, but also created a sense of shared experience and cooperation as dishes were passed up, down, and around the table. We are a gregarious bunch and all felt comfortable having a very nice dining experience without feeling stifled or stilted.... and the final price tag, coming in at a little over $40.00 a person didn't break the bank! Burmese food was a 1st for all but one in our party, and days later - I'm still getting emails & texts from my team on how good the food was, how good the experience was, and can we dine here again next time! We WILL be back! read more

The tea leaf salad is very good here. Ive had really bad tea leaf salad before at other restaurants and I keep coming back to Rangoon because they have the best. read more

Well, I've never tried a Burmese restaurant before but I'll be trying again! The food is somewhere between Indian and Thai but with a distinctiveness of its own. I had the calamari and shared some chicken salad, which were both delicious, as was the Rangoon chicken curry. The atmosphere was fairly quiet when we visited but there were plenty of other diners. The staff were friendly and attentive. A really nice place. read more

The tea salad here is super yummy! We had the vegetarian option! The mango tofu was delicious too! We also had the beef curry and that was super yummy! read more

I found the food here to be under seasoned and quite plain. It may be due to the "fusion" style of cooking. I expected the tea leaf salad to have a stronger tea leaf taste but it seamed timid and plain. I always order the hand made thin bread with a curry sauce at Burmese and Malaysian places and really found this one to be bland and not very appealing. Many other better places to go. read more

This was a very pleasant dining experience. My family and I, along with a bunch of our friends stopped here for a congratulatory dinner. We ordered a variety of appetizers as well as some entrees. We started out with an order of calamari, some samosas, and lettuce wraps. All of the above were very tasty. I tend to like calamari that is not super greasy, and this was fried to perfection. The lettuce wraps were fresh, and the samosas were tasty. We ordered the sesame fried chicken, country style beef, lamb curry, chicken crisp, pad thai and some other which escape me. We ate everything family style, even though portion size was a little on the lighter end. Everything was very tasty, and nobody was disappointed with any of our choices. Our entire dinner took roughly an hour, including appetizers. Service was very friendly, even though our waitress was obviously quite new. My only complaint was getting water was pretty difficult. Would go back, and would absolutely recommend this place to anyone. read more

Some background, I have been coming to this restaurant regularly for over a year now. Up until now I would give it 5 stars (surprised I never wrote a review) due to both the service and food. It was one of my favorite restaurants. Tonight I placed an order for takeout for the first time from the San Carlos location. First, I was annoyed because I had a free entree waiting for me there (per the other manager who wasn't working when I called) due to a misunderstanding last time where they didn't pack my leftovers correctly. The manager on staff was unable to help at all and assured me the other manager would call me. Again annoyed since I was told it was in the computer system but there was nothing else to do. Then I placed an order with a girl who I had to repeat most things with, not sure why. Anyways, I placed the order, hung up and then my husband walked out to go get the food. Our car tire was flat so I called back immediately to cancel the order. The girl said it was fine and hung up on a friendly note. A minute later the manager called back, irate that I had cancelled the order. It had literally been minutes and he said the kitchen had began making the order (which was a $75+ order). He threatened me and said I would never be able to call in again and that they had my name and number on file. I was beyond SHOCKED. Complete lack of understanding and beyond rude. I love this restaurant but will NEVER return to this location. This manager was awful and has no idea what customer service is. To be threatened like that, after eating here for so long and recommending to countless friends, unbelievable. Good luck if you ever run into a customer service issue with this manager!!! I will be repeating this story to everyone I can because I have never been treated like this. read more

Food was very tasty and good. I was with a Burmese friend and she thought it was quite authentic, except the tea salad should have cabbage vs. romaine lettuce but overall the dish was great! The catfish soup was very tasty but the portion was small for the price as compared to other restaurants in the SF bay area, i.e. Burma Superstar or Mingalaba. My big surprise was that a 20% gratuity was added to the bill for a lunch for two people. This is absurd. I've never had gratuity added for lunch or for two people anywhere!! Everyone check your bill or you will pay double for gratuity!!!! read more

Good food but the points below justify the low rating. - The place is extremely noisy and it makes it impossible to have a conversation. - There was a 2.68% extra charge for the Affordable Care Act on my bill. I was not notified of this charge ahead. I think we should boycott any restaurants that pass onto their customer their ACA taxes. Why not xx% for PG&E and yy% for their phone bill??? This is ridiculous. read more

They deliver!!! Ordered the Lemongrass Salmon and was so pleased to see that they had the good sense to package the dish appropriately for delivery. The salmon was separate from the sauce in which you could pour yourself, so you did not end up with a soggy overcooked salmon. Salmon was delicious!! read more

The basil chili beef was amazing! You must get it! It comes as a large portion and has a rich, complex flavor that's difficult to put into words. The ambiance is nice and personal. Great place for a date. And the service is wonderful too. My reservation got lost here on Valentine's Day and the hostess apologized and totally squeezed me back in when they were totally booked! Love this place. read more

Friend and I went here on a whim last night. We were going to eat at Town just down the street but it was a minimum 45 minute wait. No thanks! We were quickly greeted and sat. My maybe one small negative comment about this is that the tables are pretty close together. Our server, Anthony, was there to help us out in about 2-3 minutes. My friend and I had never had Burmese food, so we had a lot of questions. Anthony was extremely knowledgeable and friendly! He was able to answer all of our questions and make great reccomdendations based on our likes. He said a must was the Tea Leaf Salad. He was correct. Romaine lettuce with peanut sauce, fish oil, tomatoes, peanuts, garlic chips, sesame seeds and a few other things I can't remember was absolutely delicious. My friend said it was the best salad she had ever said. I don't know if I would go that far, but it certainly was top 5 all time. We each got a glass of wine (also minor negative complaint was that they had small selections of wines by the glass) which ranged from 10-14 dollars. We got an order of Coconut Rice (so good!) Minted Jalapeno Chicken and Basil Chili Lamb. Everything was fantastic! Also everything is made to share, chinese style, so it was fun trying the different foods and it came very quickly (definitely didnt wait more than 10 minutes for anything and that may even be too long). I would most definitely come back here. Anthony said they are trying to open a location in the South Bay (which is where I live) by mid 2015. Hope they carry the quality! In total we ordered 3 glasses of wine, a salad, rice, and two entrees and our bill came to just under $100. Thought it was a little steep, but worth it over all. read more

Very good food and served in an upscale environment. Service was flawless and the food was exceptional! The tea leaf salad is on of my faves. Ive had it at many Burmese spots before but never this good. The curries are so deep in flavor without being overpowering. Looking at recent reviews, I noticed the one star from Fiona H. My dear, you are a dimwit! You are paying for the ACA tax anywhere you go, where the business is following the law. The only difference is that most places will bury the tax in the overall cost so that its hidden. Its good that we see how much we are paying for this federally imposed nonsense. On your bill it was two dollars and change right? That's going to make you boycott a restaurant? The fact that they show you instead of hiding it in the item prices? Wow, you are dumb. I'm against the ACA myself because it forces citizens under threat of financial penalty, to purchase a product from the most corrupt industry in America. Thus, I'm glad when a business shows us what we are paying for it. It should make us angry but not at the small business that is complying with federal law, rather our anger should be directed at the strong arm robbery that the insurance industry is pulling off with the help of the feds as their muscle. Fiona, you are confusing a restaurant review with politics. Yelp readers want to know if the food and service is good not how upset you are with the federal tax system. Would you also give a gas station a poor review because the pump shows you how much federal tax you are paying there? You clearly need to educate yourself on these matters. read more

We've eaten here 3 times now so I feel legit about writing a review. I've been eating quite a bit of Burmese food as well so obviously I'm an expert! First visit: I was impressed with the service being that it was within the first week of opening; I can only assume they brought some superstars from their PA location. Good call as it was attentive, warm and quick. Dishes included Lettuce Cups, Salmon Crisp and the Nan Gyi Dok. The lettuce cups were EXCELLENT, great flavor and generous portion. The salmon crisp was a bit dry which makes sense since it's deep fried. The nan gyi dok was very good though I slightly prefer the one at Mingalaba, maybe because they use wide, flat noodles instead. This dish was very similar to the one at Burma Superstar. If you haven't tried it, this is a good place to start; some people don't like the texture of the powder in the noodles but I enjoy it. Second visit: Palata appetizer, Nan Gyi Dok, and the Village Catfish. Palata was standard; the chicken curry it's served with is delightful. Catfish was well cooked and had a lot of pleasant flavors. My only complaint here was that the gentleman serving (not our server) had a hard time mixing the dish up, spilled some off the plate, and I had to remix after he left. Service that time was a little below par; our waitress was a little bit curt though efficient. Third visit: Between the second and third, I ate at Burma Superstar in Alameda and it definitely gave me some perspective. I thought it would blow me away and though it was very good, it made me appreciate RR a bit more, especially because it's down the street from me! We again had the Nan Gyi Dok (again, not mixed well), the Tea Leaf Salad, and the Mint Jalepeno Pork. The Tea Leaf salad was not as good as BS or Mandalay though; I think because the lettuce was chopped too thick (so the rest of the ingredients didn't really stick to it and it was hard to fit in your mouth, plus they use romaine, yuck) and the tea leaves were not chopped enough so it just kind of sat on top. The flavor was OK but could've been much better if everything was chopped smaller and mixed better together. The mint jalepeno pork was a pleasant surprise; we really enjoyed this one (on mild heat). We also found shredding the fresh mint leaves before eating was delightful too. I would suggest they add more fresh mint leaves as the mint flavor was a little too mild. Overall though, I'd order it again. All three times, we had coconut rice which was standard -- moist and full of coconut flavor. Service was also much warmer this time around although they forgot to give us our leftovers before we signed for the check. Didn't want to wait around and figured they already threw it out. Sad. It is quite loud in there so you may need to shout and they have the adult contemporary music BLARING. But the interior is nice looking and enjoy the windows in the front. On the way out, the owner (or someone in upper management), leaned out the windows and thanked us for coming and said, "see you next time!" yes sir, you certainly will! read more

My mom and I are here tonight and can't stop talking about it. First off, it's beautiful inside: a lot of thought went into the decor. It makes you feel relaxed and happy. We split a couple of dishes: the Shrimp Kebat and the Egg and Okra Curry. Both were amazingly delicious and unique. My mom is not adventurous, but loved every bite. We were worried about spice. I got the okra dish mild and the Kebat medium because it doesn't come mild. Both were perfect and not too spicy. I will be back soon. read more

I've been failed by my fellow San Carlos yelpers too many times. Like seriously...how this place have multiple locations is beyond me! The place was fairly packed but we were accommodated right away. We followed the reviews and ordered the two favorite things on the menu: tea leaf salad and garlic noodles. I was extremely unimpressed by both dishes which lacked flavor and were overly oily read more

I went with my coworkers and we all thought that the food was bland and overpriced. I paid $12 for my garlic noodle with duck meant sliced. I can barely taste the garlic, the duck was dry and not much flavor to it. The portion was small and $12 was actually the price from the lunch menu. I can't imagine how much is the regular price. Don't think I will go back again. read more

Good lord this place is expensive. I could've gone to Kyain Kyain in Newark for an equally satisfying Burmese meal for literally 1/5 the price, I kid you not. 2 appetizers + 2 entrees + 1 rice + 1 dessert = $88 before tip. APPETIZERS? GOOD. It's questionable how fast the food comes out but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I got the Palata which comes with a small dish of chicken curry; the palata was piping hot; crispy on the outside and flaky inside which is how it should be. The curry was so flavorful with hefty chunks of chicken. I loved this! I also got the Tea Leaf Salad which was okay; not acidic or spicy enough to how I usually like it but good portion of tea leaf to lettuce to nuts. This is could be a person's worst nut allergy nightmare. ENTREES? NOT SO GOOD. Country style beef is apparently a dish native to Bagan which I didn't get a chance to go to when we were in Burma. But I wonder if they tried to cook the meat to imitate Asian cows which usually have a tougher meat. I didn't like that. Village Catfish was also another overcooked dish. RICE/DESSERT? OK. I got the Homestyle Fried Rice which was good but seemed a bit exorbitant to cost $10 because it was less like fried rice where you have a lot of different items in it to justify the cost and more like a slightly nicer side of rice. I understand that it has yellow beans that have been steamed for two days but my mom used to make a similar dish when I was young and she would never charge $10 for it. Oven-baked Sooji was the most authentically Burmese dessert on the menu and it was another piping hot dish that comes with a side of ice cream (your choice of flavor) and the ice cream is drizzled with honey I think. The consistency is about 70% smooth because of the texture of the semolina and poppy seeds on top; good, toasted flavor. If I were in the area and wanting Burmese food, I would go to Mingalaba. It doesn't have the clean, white linen experience but it's solid, delicious, and reasonably priced. read more

Big thanks to the staff/ownership for casualy tossing their half-smoked cigarette butts on the sidewalk, contributing to the declining beauty and cleanliness of San Carlos. Try not being lazy POS and carrying your filth to the trash can that's a few feet away. An Affordable Care Act "tax" added onto the receipt, on top of the actual tax we're legally required to pay? Seriously? I have been here twice and love it. The food is delicious, the service good, and the restaurant has a nice vibe. We have made reservations both time we have gone, and both times have been for lunch during the week. So, I can't say how busy it gets during the weekend, but during the week its fairly busy. You might be able to be seated without reservations during the week. The food is family style, which is nice so you can try different menu items. The tea leaf salad is delicious and a must try. The mango chicken, garlic noodles, and ruby shrimp are all so good. Flavorful, tasty, and filling.
