A busboy opened an umbrella for us and we proceeded to settle in. After a solid 10 minutes without so much as an hello from a server, we finally got the same person who had initially snarled at us come to our table. She proceeded to take the umbrella down from the hot sun claiming it was windy. It was not windy at all. This person was simply horrible and a poor reflection on what seemed like a decent menu. According to local lore, he built it as an entertainment center to please his wife while they resided in rural Litchfield County. On the second floor was a ballroom, ground floor a movie theatre, and basement had a bowling alley. After decades of use the theater closed in 1997. Since then different groups of community members have stepped up to revive and restore the theater. LOCATION: The theater is located on a street that intersects with the town's main thoroughfare. This section of town is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places as a historic zone for its large collection early twentieth century buildings. These buildings arose after the crossing of two regional railways sparked commercial development. CONCEPT: Aligned with how the venue was initially conceived, the Colonial Theatre is a community hub for entertainment and celebrations. ATMOSPHERE: Many early 20th century design details have been preserved or restored, including a mural depicting the surrounding community in the lobby. EXPERIENCE: A variety of events sponsored or hosted by regional businesses take place at the theater. As one example, Boondocks Film Society hosted an event in which 1930s style cocktails were served alongside a streaming of the 1934 class -- The Thin Man. Live jazz by the Orson Handel trio accompanied the pre-screening competition cocktails. The site, with its art deco details, was especially fitting for this event. TIPS: There is an excellent restaurant across the street from theater -- Industry Kitchen & Bar. I've enjoyed the burgers, sandwiches, and tacos (see my Yelp review.), but they also offer fancier dinner entrees. Check the theater's website and Instagram for upcoming events.

Only downside - it's cold as heck in the theatre - not sure what the deal with that is - I was cold the first time, the next time I was prepared and enjoyed myself immensely. Will we go back? The room was beautiful! The drinks in the refrigerator (different types of iced teas) were complimentary. Plus they had the real nice coffee maker - The Nespresso. Breakfast was also included and you went to the onsite cafe- provided your room number and we were all set. Right outside our room was two chairs in a table for enjoying outside. We got unlucky with weather our 2nd and final day / night were downpours. But The White Hart had Monopoly so that took up three hours of our time. By some stroke of pure luck, we came across Marybeth (MB), who graciously agreed not to paint her venue in order to accommodate us. I'll say that at first, I was hesitant, and some of my initial reactions were on par with the more negative reviews below. However, after just having concluded my event, I can tell you that those reviews couldn't be farther from the truth. Yes, MB is a strong personality - but it's worth it. MB and her team put on a flawless, thoughtful and incredibly joyful 3 days for our guests, including an important client. She'll tell you repeated to just trust her and that she knows what she's doing. And you know what? SHE DOES! I wouldn't have had my event at any other venue with any other person running it. And will definitely be keeping MB and her space in mind for future opportunities. I can't stress enough how amazing our time was. Let her do her thing and you can sit back, relax and trust that you'll have an incredible event on your hands.

MB was able to make my day the most wonderful experience of my life. There was not a single problem (that I was ever made aware of). Everyone told us we had the best wedding they have ever been too! MB set us up with the vintage china, a hayride, had my father bring me to the aisle in a vintage truck. I have never heard so many "Wow! This is an awesome touch!" So many times. I come from a large family and everyone kept saying that this was the greatest wedding they have ever been too. MB and her staff were wonderful, the guy driving the hayride brought us close to the trees to pick some apples and through out the rest of the farm. When I came to MB with any concerns about anything she had it taken care of IMMEDIATELY! I wish I could get married again because she puts on an EPIC wedding. If you are looking for the most unique, incredible, stress free day of your life; Apple Barn Farm and MB will do that for you!!
