I've had an interest in hot dog stands for over 20 years. Family who work for Vienna Beef off Fullerton. Rand Red Hots is a good joint. The dogs are not thick like portillos, however very thin. Despite that, they are boiled and taste excellent. One hot dog will run 2.99. The setup is classic. Almost exactly replicating Gene and Judes, the dog is wrapped with hand cut fries which is included in your 2.99 The display inside and even outside the joint is very 50s era. No tables, only stools along the inside edge facing the street. The place is good. Not expensive, has a nice atmosphere and strives to maintain a classic hot dog stand. However, and the reason for my lack of fifth star; this establishment is cash only. In a time when credit and debit are the empowering force of transactions, a cash only establishment can become annoying. In the end, cash only does keep it classic. read more

I am a fresh cut fry fanatic and I am in Heaven! I am so thrilled to find a great hot dog place close to home .... Gene and Jude's, Poochies, Gina's - and now adding Rand Red Hots. Open on Sundays so it's perfect for after a day of selling at the flea market (yes, this is the flea market lady who LOVES YOUR FRIES!!!). Hot Dogs, Fries and amazing Maxwell Street Polish with caramelized Onions, charred of course -all delicious. AND, they don't skimp on the fries. The employees are friendly and pleasant, there is a drive thru, and the price is right! And to address one of the other reviews, fresh cut fries do get soggy when wrapped and traveling...try them there right out of the fryer!!! Rand Red Hots ..... I Love You. !!!! (More inside seating would be cool, though I love drive thru, I love to eat on site, fresh and hot, no booths or tables so I can't bring my mom in) Definitely worth trying, over and over and over ..... I always liked this place because the menu was limited to the few items they do really well - mostly hot dogs. Employees always seemed to be polite local teenagers. Today, I ask for a "hot dog with hot" and she asks me what I want on it, listing all the ingredients. Huh? Staff here has changed for the worse with employees completely oblivious to Chicago hot dog history and culture. Almost like they're from a foreign land - maybe they are. Stacks of tortillas warming on the grill for I don't know what...nothing on the menu needs tortillas. This place used to be much better. What a shame. Never heard of the place and googled hot dog stands near my work. Saw this place and gave it a try and I am glad I did. Great hot dog and fresh cut fries. Hot dog had that snap when you bite in and had a great taste. Fries were not soggy and were cooked perfectly wrapped with the hot dog. Did very much remind me of Gene and Jude's, but had a slightly larger menu offering Maxwell Polish and milk shakes which I'd like to try on my next visit. I highly recomend. read more

On our most recent trip Rand Red Hots was our second-best dog and high up in our all-time ratings. Fries gone bad! I have eaten here for years and although the hotdogs are decent, they had the best fresh cut fries around. Not any more! It seems like they are either using a cheaper potato or not using the right oil to flavor the fries. We have been back a few times since they changed over the fries and were disappointed to find that these bad fries are here to stay. We will not be back. So caution. Let's get one thing straight first... the original Chicago Hot Dog is what would be classified as a Depression Dog or the Minimalist. The style of dog that is normally associated with Chicago Style (tomato wedges, celery salt, poppy seed bun, etc...) is an invention of the Vienna Beef Company. This place is a great attempt and the closest thing we have in Des Plaines to an authentic hot dog stand. Is it legendary like Gene & Jude's or a once-hidden gem of the community like Paradise Pup? Not yet, but I'm hopeful that the owners will get through their growing pains and streamline their operation. I thoroughly enjoyed my hot dog and was tickled that I could even get a mass-produced, Chicago-style tamale in a bun. Loved it! I'll definitely be back. I *would* recommend 86ing the ketchup option for the dogs, though. Or make it an option for anyone under 12 only. since the "other" new hotdog place in des plaines was a total let down, i didnt have high hopes for this place since it opened afterwards, but i experienced the complete opposite!
