I had a choice today between Taco John's and Rancho Grande. I believe I made the wrong choice. I've been to El Rauncho enough times to have formulated an opinion. This place is very hit or miss. More often on the miss. The food is bland and flavorless. At my visit today, the food wasn't even hot, it was lukewarm. The prices are decent, on the lower end of average, but you're also getting what you pay for. There are three "traditional" Mexican restaurants in the area: this, Jalisco, and Las Margaritas in Glidden. This is the worst choice. read more

Echoing what others have said, this place (as far as the food is concerned) is horrible. For context and credibility: I'm a native Californian and was raised on Mexican food cooked by people who had just come across the border. I've also been to Mexico ten or eleven times including a 4-month stay in Mexico City. Mexican food and I are acquainted. The ambiance is not bad: just your typical (stereotypical?) tiles and festive colors. The booths are high-backed unpadded wooden benches. I didn't visit the bathrooms, but the place looked reasonably clean--the exception being the menu (front and back) which the hostess handed to me was smeared with melted cheese and some kind of sauce. Same for the table. The hostess walked over and smeared the stuff on the table around with a single napkin. M'eh! Against my first instinct I sat in the bar area. Oddly, when I asked the hostess for a table other than in the bar, the first question she asked was "so you don't like the waiter either." Having never been in the place, the obvious answer was no. Noting that there were no flat-screens blaring sports (soap-operas for men) or people smoking, I acquiesced. The obligatory chips and "salsa" were not horrible. The chips were cold and unsalted, and the "salsa" was basically thickened tomato sauce with as much excitement as a bowl of oatmeal. For the entree I ordered a combo with Enchiladas and Chili Rellenos, along with an al pastor and a carnitas taco. The rellenos were disgusting: half-melted cheese slopped onto half a Poblano pepper that had not had the peel removed. Nor was it, as it should have been, dipped, battered and fried after being stuffed with . The "enchilada" was ground beef wrapped in a flour (should be corn) tortilla smothered in something other than enchilada sauce and piled high with more of the same cheese as everything else. The "tacos" were fajita-sized flour (!!) tortillas heaped with chunks of meat with cilantro and onion in a small bowl on the side. That was it, flour tortillas and hunks of meat. The "carnitas" were smothered in something akin to bar-b-que sauce. To top the night off, a male/female couple at an adjacent table got into a shouting match with the guy repeatedly hurling the f-bomb, calling the female a "bitch" and threatening the female with physical violence. The staff (there were males and females) did nothing. It appeared that, to them, this was business as usual. For the reasons above and several others, I will never go there again and will actively encourage my friends to do the same. read more

Horrible. The server was rude, the staff ignored us when we went to pay, and my food was raw. You have to cook ground beef completely because the bacteria is mixed in during the grinding process unlike whole cuts of steak. I didn't even get to eat. Never going back. read more

First time trying Rancho Grande...and went be a real common place I'll go. Stopped for lunch and was seated quickly and service was good and quick. Chips and salsa are ok, but nothing outstanding at all. Decided to have the burrito and taco combination. Food arrived almost instantly. Rice and beans were small portions, and extremely bland, as was the taco and burrito. Sour cream apparently must be ordered separately and at a added charge. Overall it was just ok...edible, but nothing special. Personally I will likely go to Hunan Chinese next time I'm in town...have always had good meals there! read more

Recommend sitting inside when possible. We were attacked by flies, food order was incorrect and server didn't take it back to kitchen. He just asked if he could bring a separate plate to put the wrong stuff on. Kids love tacos but didn't like these. Cheese dip was brought out but no chips for 15 minutes. We heard good things about this place but we couldn't wait to get our ticket and leave. Hope others have a better experience. read more

The food is good, but sometimes comes lukewarm. Fried Ice cream is very good and a decently large portion. If you are young, teenage or so, don't expect the best service. I'm not sure if they don't expect a tip or what, but they come to give you your food and then not again. Not everyone speaks the best English, so I have had a few mix ups when ordering takeout and they still wanted me to pay for their mistake, but that happens sometimes. read more

One star--at best. Sat down at table--party of 8. Took LITERALLY 10 minutes for first server to arrive. Ordered pitcher of the Texas margaraitas. Pitcher arrived. Color: Kelly green. what? Yes. Literally no tequila included at $19.99/pitcher. As is common, we ran out of chips and salsa and asked for a second round, along with pico de gallo. After 15 minutes--never arrived. We ordered our food, waited. Then waited some more. Finally, just picked up and left. Paid for the pitcher and a soft drink. Even added a tip (which I should not have done). Left the establishment. I love margarita night at the Rancho Grande! The service and food are always good but expect to wait on the weekends ( and many times on margarita night which is Wednesday) The indoor dining area is crowded and it can get extremely loud as the night wears on and said margaritas are consumed. Be prepared for it. In the warmer season they open the patio seating which doubles the seating space and cuts back on the noise. You can not go to Carroll without trying Rancho Grande! read more

I live in Cherokee, Ia. 90 miles from Carroll, but I find the drive well worth the effort, and expense if I get to eat at "Rancho Grande"! Its' the best Mexican Restaurant that I have eaten at in NW Iowa. The decor is colorful, the Wait Staff are accomodating, and cheerful! Rancho has been one of the highlights of my several visits to Carroll. Good Mexican food, drink specials and a nice patio during the summer. They may have the most vegetarian options of anyone in this part of the state, and good spicy salsa on request. To say the least, I've been pretty happy with the food at Rancho Grande. It's definitely one of the best authentic Mexican restaurants that I have ever been to. I went here for my 22nd birthday and it was..okay. The food is average and you get decent portion sizes. The drinks are nothing to rave about. The best thing about this place is you get either a free piece of cake or a shot if it's your birthday. The worst things..the seating and the staff. The booths are hard and severely uncomfortable and there is no room. They need to space the tables out more. Our server was borderline rude and ignored us almost the whole time. The other members of my party had to go up and ask 4 times before they gave me my birthday shot and by then we were about to leave and had finished eating. We were never checked up on which was disappointing since my side of tomatoes was never delivered and when I finally got to say something, I was done eating and didn't want them anymore. The whole ordeal added a huge damper on my birthday and it was embarrassing for me and my guests to have to basically wait on ourselves. To say that this is a "Mexican" restaurant is using the term extremely loosely. The salsa, queso, ground beef and margaritas are beyond bland and flavorless. The only reason for one star is that the food came fast, but that's because it all appears to have been pre-made and sitting for quite some time.
