Chimichanga has always been a favorite at most Mexican restaurants and Casa De Oro did not disappoint! We loved this place! We stopped here on NYE on our way to the casino. The free queso and pico alongside chips and salsa was a unique touch. We loved the Cadillac and banana margaritas. The salsa was better than most Mexican restaurants--smokey and just spicy enough. My hubby had the 3 taco meal (forgot to get a photo) in which the tacos were HUGE and I had the Camarones al Mojo de Ajo which was cooked perfectly and the sauce was to die for. We took probably 3 meals worth of leftovers home. We will definitely be stopping here every time we are in Jefferson in the future! read more

We had dinner at Casa De Oro during the overnight RAGBRAI stop in Jefferson. They were unbelievably busy and almost inundated with orders. Our waitress ended up being a lady named Teresa, who we later found out to be a manager at the restaurant. We got our drinks and gave our orders. It took forever for us to get our food but they gave us chips, salsa, queso, and pico and plenty of drinks! It took forever because RAGBRAI was in town and we understood the situation, we all understood. Teresa was apologetic but we told her, it was all good, we understood. As we finished our food, which was so good and flavorful, we saw that it was getting pretty late and the shuttles to our campground had stopped. We mentioned to Teresa, jokingly, that we'd be walking back to our campground. She asked where we were camping and we told her. Teresa said we were 'quite a long way out'. She then said, "I can take you". We all said, "no worries, you guys are so busy!" This place was probably having the busiest day in it's history and the manager was offering to bring us to our camp. There's no way we'd expect that. As we finished paying our bills, Teresa removed her waitress garb and said, "hold on, I'll be right back". She came back only a short time later with her keys and said, "let's go, my trucks out back!" We were stunned but yet relieved all at the same time. We were definitely more stunned and also excited about this would-be all-time RAGBRAI memory. We all loaded up into Teresa's truck and she took us the several miles back to the campground. We were all so thankful and she had a smile that didn't leave her face. She talked about her family and seemed excited with an upcoming vacation. As she dropped us off, we all thanked her and told her how great the food was and how much we appreciated the ride. Teresa left an impression on all of us, no doubt. I was not sure how many stars to give because I had a mixed feeling here. First, there is not a ton of seating here, and if you have a party of 5 or more, you will need a bigger table. There are only four party tables in the middle. Make sure you call ahead and reserve one! Very polite staff, but we saw our waitress only one time. Maybe it was just a busy night, but none the less, the service was slacking. Oh, I do not want to forget to mention the surprising fact that when you sit down, like most Mexican restaurants, you get chips and salsa, but you also get cheese dip for free. I have never seen a Mexican restaurant offer the cheese dip for free! Food - 8/10 Service - 7/10 Price - 9.5/10 Wait time - 6/10 Overall - 76% I would still recommend this place, and if I get the chance, I will give it another shot because they have low pricing. read more

Some of the worst service I have ever seen! Not friendly, even though they were overwhelmed by ragbrai, had they been friendly and not worried about stupid stuff! Waited almost an hour and a half for Mexican food worse than Taco Bell! Everyone starts out with 5 stars and a 20% tip, and they wide it down from there! I can overlook long waiting time when they start out friendly, but when you begin as a bitch, not good business! After dinner you had to wait in a 15 minute line to pay! The servers were amazing but the food sucked. My taco salad came in a burnt tortilla bowl and it was not the normal sized fried tortilla shell. It was about a quarter of the size it normally is. My boyfriend got a burger with fries and these fries were absolutely horrendous. They actually looked like sautéed onions, the servers were completely embarrassed. When I saw this place I had some fairly low expectations of how good it would be. Man was I wrong. This place rocks. The food was authentic, cheap and plentiful. They had a great selection of beer. When they brought the customary chips and salsa, they also brought pico de gayo and queso. Everyone i was there with enjoyed their meals as much as I did. My folks live near here- not too many good restaurants to choose from in this area. This restaurant was a pleasant surprise when they brought me here last summer- the food is really good. Dad called the flavors 'drliverate,' I like that description. There are a lot of excellent, cheap options that pack a ton of flavor. Loved the camarones diablo and the fajitas. Seems like a really nice hardworking family. We used to go to rancho grande in Carroll but we won't anymore! Casa de oro is better and closer. Excellent margaritas don't hurt! Tried this place while catching a show at the casino. Some of the best Mexican we have had. Starting with excellent chips and salsa and cheese dips to the main dishes. Kids got mango shakes and loved them. Wife and I tried margaritas and those while good were not very strong at all. Those were the only thing we can 'complain' about. Wonderful little family restaurant with authentic Mexican food. Not at all what I expected to find in central Iowa. Queso and pico de gallo are indeed delivered with warm chips and salsa...we had great Carne Asada, chili verde, arroz con pollo, rice and beans. We have been going to Casa De Oro for several years and got to know the owner and all the workers. We have been there when it was really busy and we would tell the workers to get caught up and we will wait. My son, his girlfriend, my husband and I were there eating one night and my son gave our server $70.00 to get a gift certificate for my husband and I for Christmas. He lost it in his truck or in the house and the server is a good friend of ours(we thought) and knows that our son got a gift certificate for $70.00. Gil will not honor it. We have a Mexican restaurant in our town and we would drive a half hour to eat there. How many people get $70.00 gift certificates???? We will not eat there anymore!!! I hope that Gil will give each worker $10.00 of our money!!!! read more

Well, the food was good, the chips were hot, the pico excellent. However 3/4 of the way through our meal.. a roach appeared on our booth divider. They apologized and we didn't have to pay our bill. I've been going to this restaurant for many years now. Every other time I have ate here, the food has been delicious and the staff has been great! The other day I ordered in a chicken quesadilla. As they told me it would be 10 minutes to make, but when I got there they said it would be another 5 minutes. Time has gone by and still not done but eventually get my order and leave. When I open up my box, the quesadilla was very burnt to the point where I couldn't even finish my food. I never called back because this was the first time I have encountered something like this so I wasn't going to make a big deal about it. Today on August 31; I go with my sister and eat inside. The waitress by the name of Allison was very rude and never gave us our menu to see what we could order. Again, I didn't want to make a big deal because I enjoy coming to this restaurant. I ordered my usual chicken quesadilla. I began to eat it, and the chicken was under cooked. I ate one bite and that was it. I was already frustrated and just wanted to leave. The waitress never came back to check up on us which is unusual. I'm standing at the counter to pay for our food and we stood there for a good ten minutes before someone came up to help, Allison the waitress walked by us five different times and didn't say anything. Again, as I said this place is normally a good sit down restaurant but unfortunately they lost my business. Needs to get this under control. Staff and the kitchen. read more
