We wanted to go to the nearby High Trestle Trail Bridge, so we stopped here for lunch with our grandkids on a weekday just after noon. We were quickly seated and got our drinks and started to look over the menu, which house lots of options! The kids settled in on a grilled cheese and a taco respectively. I decided to get the lunch burrito and my wife went for the lunch enchilada. Our food came out pretty quickly and everything was very fresh tasting and the serving sizes are huge! For a lunch special I expected a lunch-sized portion and I got what I would consider an evening-sized portion. The same for my wife's meal. When we were wrapping up, they came out with ice cream for the kids. They really enjoyed that even though you would've thought they'd have been full after all they ate for lunch. The spice level on everything was very mild. The salsa had just a little bit of a zing to it but nothing that would stop the kids for eating it. Next time I will ask for some hot sauce or throw some jalapeños in my entrée, but I do like it spiced up a bit. Service was very good and a gentleman who I assume is the owner was very funny and engaged well with everyone in the restaurant. They have a parking lot and everything was neat and clean. I love small town finds, and this one was no exception. Pancho Villa in Madrid, IA was a middle place to meet family, so we decided to give it a try after driving by countless times before without stopping. Service: super friendly, funny, helpful and generous. Chile Relleno (stuffed pepper) is a favorite of one of our diners. It's also done differently everywhere, so par for the course when he gets it someplace new. He orders it just about any Mexican restaurant we go to. Instead of an egg batter outside, this one was an entire omelet folded over the pepper. It was fantastic, a different spin on other variations where the pepper is dredged thru egg batter but not folded into an omelet, and possibly the best one we've had vs. other places. He will gladly go back for this dish 100x over. Camarones a la Diablo (devils shrimp) is a favorite of mine. I love spicy food, this is one dish that I look for and order frequently at Mexican restaurants. I enjoyed everything about this dish, in terms of ingredients, freshness, presentation, etc. but I thought the sauce wasn't spicy enough and a little bit too "ketchupy". It wasn't awful but wasn't the best I've had. Texas Fajitas (steak, shrimp, chicken, chorizo) was delicious. Everything was so fresh and plentiful. Great flavor. This dish alone would've been enough for the three of us, they definitely do not skimp on portions. Chile Torreados (fried pepper) is a must for me on the side. However, these jalapeños were not spicy at all. Luck of the draw, did not take away from the experience. We were given a surprise, small dessert of vanilla ice cream, topped with chocolate and honey, over a sopapilla and garnished with a dash of cinnamon sugar. A wonderful surprise for such a and muggy day! Iced tea is fresh brewed and not out of a gun (and if you're an ice tea drinker, like we are, you'll appreciate that...especially in the summer). A quickish drive from Waukee, even with all of the frustrating road closures North Waukee (seriously we hit road closures and detours at every turn), we still made it in reasonable time. This is a great stop on the High Trestle Trail. Numerous menu choices but we settled on our favorites, fajitas and carnitas. Both very good with very generous portions and leftovers, which we love. The margaritas were tasty but a little more tequila would be good too. Owner/waiter was very attentive and friendly. Be prepared to answer questions like favorite bike trail and even favorite state. Showed up late to family dinner and when I got inside the owner was joking with me about being late and throughout the entire service he was funny and very good to us. Food showed up fast and tasted excellent it was very good and I will be coming back here again. I have this thing where I won't consider a "Mexican restaurant" a Mexican restaurant if it doesn't have one of the two: Street Tacos and Jarritos. Pancho Villa has neither. Like seriously how do you consider yourself a Mexican restaurant and not have street tacos when that trend is at its peak right now. I've asked the workers there and they said people in this small town don't eat it. I find that very hard to believe when down the road the Mexican place in Minburn, a much smaller town, has both. I've ate at Pancho Villa twice and both times I got what was available and it sucked. Chips and salsa sucked too. read more

The service is Amazing! The owner is the funnest most funny guy. The service is fast. The food is delicious. I recommend the carne asada and the guacamole and cheese dip. There's many types of food and drinks to try! The atmosphere is very calming and minimal the place does echo but the staff fills it with fun jokes and making relationships! Yesterday we were in my hometown and decided to try Pancho Villa.. it was recently remodel and it was sooo clean and bright. Valentin was so welcoming, friendly and easy to visit with,m. When we explained it was our first time there he said, oh you'll be back. .. the food was VERY good. I had the seafood chimichanga.. ummm it was loaded with scallops and seafood, my partner had the shrimp mushroom fajita I believe it was. Wow - who knew you could find great Mexican food in tiny Madrid, Iowa!!??!! We live in Arizona & hail for California. We love Mexican food. After biking the High Trestle Trail we were hungry & wanted more than beer & bad bar food. Pancho Villa is just one block south of the trailhead so very convenient after your ride. Owner & host Valentin is from Puerto Vallarta and offers a huge menu with lots of depth including many seafood & veg options. The five of us ordered a variety of combo plates & specials - all enjoyed their platters & large servings. Even the traditional rice & beans are a cut above the usual Mex-Amer fare. Big baskets of chips & an individual fresh salsa for each of us started the meal, along with very good traditional margaritas (big!!) thankfully not gunky sweet but pleasantly tart. My husband and I walked in 10 minutes until closing because we goofed and thought they were open for another hour. We were hesitant to order so late and tried to compromise - oh, we'll just have drinks and some chips and salsa and maybe something to go? They would not hear it and displayed the most gracious hospitality. My husband's steak fajitas were amazing and my chicken chimichanga was delicious. Our family was on a road trip in the Midwest (IA;SD;WY;CO;NM;TX) visiting National Parks and other sights to see. The day after we left the Iowa State Fair, we went to walk the High Trestle Trail Bridge in Madrid,IA. We found Pancho Villa in Madrid for dinner and the food was excellent. The owner was on duty and made our family feel very welcome. This place is a short drive from Ames (Iowa State) and not far from Des Moines if one is going to explore the bridge. read more
