a sign for a mexican restaurant

I love small town finds, and this one was no exception. Pancho Villa in Madrid, IA was a middle place to meet family, so we decided to give it a try after driving by countless times before without stopping. Service: super friendly, funny, helpful and generous. Chile Relleno (stuffed pepper) is a favorite of one of our diners. It's also done differently everywhere, so par for the course when he gets it someplace new. He orders it just about any Mexican restaurant we go to. Instead of an egg batter outside, this one was an entire omelet folded over the pepper. It was fantastic, a different spin on other variations where the pepper is dredged thru egg batter but not folded into an omelet, and possibly the best one we've had vs. other places. He will gladly go back for this dish 100x over. Camarones a la Diablo (devils shrimp) is a favorite of mine. I love spicy food, this is one dish that I look for and order frequently at Mexican restaurants. I enjoyed everything about this dish, in terms of ingredients, freshness, presentation, etc. but I thought the sauce wasn't spicy enough and a little bit too "ketchupy". It wasn't awful but wasn't the best I've had. Texas Fajitas (steak, shrimp, chicken, chorizo) was delicious. Everything was so fresh and plentiful. Great flavor. This dish alone would've been enough for the three of us, they definitely do not skimp on portions. Chile Torreados (fried pepper) is a must for me on the side. However, these jalapeños were not spicy at all. Luck of the draw, did not take away from the experience. We were given a surprise, small dessert of vanilla ice cream, topped with chocolate and honey, over a sopapilla and garnished with a dash of cinnamon sugar. A wonderful surprise for such a and muggy day! Iced tea is fresh brewed and not out of a gun (and if you're an ice tea drinker, like we are, you'll appreciate that...especially in the summer). A quickish drive from Waukee, even with all of the frustrating road closures North Waukee (seriously we hit road closures and detours at every turn), we still made it in reasonable time. Already planning out our return. TC - I'm coming for you in Madrid next time

The food was great and the size of portions were grande. And our server was all smiles and very attentive.

Had a great family dinner. Didn't get a chance to take a picture before they took all our plates. 10/10 Recommend

Showed up late to family dinner and when I got inside the owner was joking with me about being late and throughout the entire service he was funny and very good to us. Food showed up fast and tasted excellent it was very good and I will be coming back here again. The restaurant itself is very nice and is a comfortable area to be seated and eat to have a good time! 10/10 Recommend this place for anyone that is looking for a great place to eat.

We're from New Mexico and this spot is great! The value for the dollar is excellent! We had the chicken fajitas and a combo.

This is a Tex-Mex restaurant. Native Texan here, check my oldest YELP reviews, people. Tex-Mex cuisine is different as cheese plays a more featured role than it does in Mexican cuisine, but unlike Americanized Mexican cuisine, it comes from Tejanos who are A) Hispanic and B) actually season their food. The customer service here is glorious! You definitely feel appreciated. The restaurant is spacious and clean, and they are keeping the number of dine in customers fairly low and spaced out. I've dined in once but lately have stuck to carry out. I think they were initially lax with masks, but were wearing them when I went in today. The food was delicious, and reminded me of Tex Mex fare back in Houston. The portions were large and the price was nice. The chips and salsa were fantastic! It tasted great even after the 30 minute drive home. I think I've found my regular Tex-Mex spot. What I liked most were the seasonings and sauciness - well balanced and no one aspect was overpowering. It also looked so pretty! Get at the tamales!!!

The family of the Wife of a local Subaru service tech that I know owns the restaurant. That's not really a firm connection, and I didn't mention anything until we were about the leave. La Carreta is attached to the American Inn and currently has a few extra rooms that they're not using. When Dad and I were here, it was busy enough. Service (by the Wife's Uncle I think) was pleasant, welcoming, and helpful. We also had a nice comfortable booth, with warm chips provided. Dad had some sort of super burrito, while I picked a spicey grilled chicken dish (pollo loco) with tortillas.. We both enjoyed our big portion choices and I appreciated not having refried beans, and enjoying the meat for what it was. Our spice was about right, and there was no need for hot sauce. Mexican beers rounded out our meal, with the final check being very reasonable. Here's what my local Subaru service tech emailed afterwards: OMG!!! I'm glad you went Eric, what did you think of the food?
