fajitas plate

I went on a Tuesday with my parents. it wasn't very busy at all. I ordered lunch chicken fajitas, Steve ordered steak fajitas. mom got a chicken taco salad. mom is very particular about spice. she could eat the salsa, the cheese dip, guacamole and her taco salad. the taco salad was full of chicken and not alot of lettuce. the chicken fajitas were good. I tried the steak fajitas and it was really dry. the lunch fajitas were huge. the sides were not huge, but plenty. service was good. I enjoyed my meal and will have the leftovers for lunch tomorrow. I enjoyed the cheese dip and the guacamole.

Two jumbo margaritas! One is traditional and one is jalapeño flavored.

Such a fun mexican restaurant!! We were sat quickly on the outside patio and were greeted by a friendly server who was helpful with recommendations. To start, chips and salsa are free and we ordered some guacamole to go with. I personally love when guacamole has chunks of avocado and that was the case here. We each got a jumbo margarita, one traditional and one jalapeño. For our main meal, we ordered the Jalisco Fajitas and Birria Tacos. The portions are on the bigger side and the fajitas could definitely serve 2. When the food came out, our waiter gave us two free patron shots. He was hilarious! The food was good, service was fast and personable, and I recommend this restaurant for a casual dinner. If it's nice outside, definitely sit on the patio.

This spot has LEVELED UP lately! I've been here a few times over the past year when visiting home, and man, they used to be good when I grew up in Johnston but now they are crushing it! Some highlights: The free chips and salsa are plentiful, and the salsa flavor is on point. Ya gotta get the queso for the table...duh! Prices are very reasonable and their plates and platters are HUGE. The best deal they have is $22 margarita pitcher - which was brought out to us in a HUGE pitcher with three marg glasses already full! That's a steal! Service is so speedy, friendly, and fun here. I love the ambiance inside. Plus, they just added a huge new patio which is gorgeous! Why are the bathrooms also so pretty?? This is THE Mexican spot in Johnston!

T-BONE MEXICANA. TONS OF VEGGIES UNDERNEATH. DECENT SIZED STEAK.

I've been here about 5 times. It Never disappoints. Great margaritas, salsa, steak dishes, fajitas, and bean dip! Seafood burrito was good, but different, red inside.

Camarones a La Diabla

I thought I was going to an Italian restaurant, wasn't paying attention to my gps. Glad I came here! Good atmosphere, with attentive wait staff. I usually get the Camarones a La Diabla at Mexican restaurants. I was brought chips and salsa to start off. Good flavors in the salsa, and the chips were warmed and plentiful. I could not believe the amount of shrimp on the plate! Wow! Good flavors, good quantity, and good prices. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting Mexican food in Des Moines!

Love this place!! It has the best food, service, and atmosphere! I got the chicken fajitas, and they're the best ones I've had anywhere. The portions are also huge, so I leave with leftovers!

Amazing! This is the husbands all time favorite and he's been dying to show me it for a while - I can understand why now! The service was super kind, making us laugh, and very personable. The chips & salsa were incredible (first thing we notice 10/10) and the margs, he got a pitcher and was living his best life!! First time having a margarita and for sure won't be the last. The food was served extremely fast, and we will be visiting again! Thank you! Loved it here!!

Ordered. Looked great! I ordered 3 dips. And then bf ordered the special dinner. We got guac which I ordered. Cheese meat dip which I ordered. And his meal. Plus a cheese quesadilla & salsa No queso. So that's fine. Things were missing with replacements lol. It was all good & timely said was going to be late but only took 30 minutes.

First visit to this very cozy brick and mortar. Previous…read morereviews were food truck reviews. There is maybe enough seating for about 20 bodies in here. Here with a table top of 6. Lots of questions with our group and the young waitress is kind and helpful. She brings waters and then had to go through the list of drinks because they are not printed on anything. We got a Trio for the table. Trio is chips and salsa (mild and hot) queso and guacamole. The chips were thick and crunchy. When we ran low she filled us back up. We got our orders in. Quesa Birria Tacos for hubby and I to share. Only 3 Tacos but we knew we were going to share a light meal. I had not had them before. The aus just sauce for a taco blew my mind. I like Angus beef and dipping sauce. Who doesn't? They were really good. Everyone else enjoyed their meals. The kitchen here is smaller and when asked about a specialty item we were informed that the Ankeny location had it but the kitchen here couldn't accommodate. I want to come back and try more. I had the flame burger from the food truck years ago and I think I would do that again too.

The chips appeared homemade and were well-seasoned with a thick white queso (also a huge serving!). The quesa birria was flavorful but the meat was a bit on the dry side; I loved the dipping sauce. The street tacos were on the bland side but added flavor with the salsa and queso. Overall, it was a good meal but not stand out!

The gist: exceptional service, warm and flavorful food; energetic ambiance with colors and music, full bar. Extras to know: on the last day of January the restaurant was comfortably warm. I am always cold and typically eat with my coat on but could enjoy tonight's meal without it. Upon arrival we were seated and immediately brought large glasses of water: I love not having to ask AND having a large glass and chips and salsa. The. Hips were typical Mexican restaurant chips; the salsa suited my preference with a bit of sweetness and cilantro. Our server was friendly and 'just right' attentive, allowing us to enjoy our meal while making sure we had drinks. The food came quickly in chilled glasses: the only thing keeping this meal from perfect is actually not so bad- the chipped glasses melted a bit and left a small glass rim puddle- I will ask for a coaster next time. And there WILL be a next time. The menu is extensive and creative with a nod to Iowa in some of the dishes (example: Iowa burrito) Prices totally reasonable for the amount of food. I enjoyed 1/3 of the pollo chorro (grilled chicken breast with chorizo) topped with melted cheese. Delicious combination. Sides of rice, refried beans and lettuce, cheese, tomatoes and sour cream in a mini taco shell. The dish came with a warm flour tortilla. Hubby had the Burrito Texano with steak, chicken and shrimp stuffed in a huge tortilla smothered in green sauce and cheese: we stayed for him to finish- he could not NOT eat it all it was so good. Family friendly, beer and margarita friendly, customer friendly, and food coma guaranteed. This is my personal favorite in town!

The atmosphere was laid back and nice. It was not that busy yet so the waitress was paying attention to us. When we put in our order my husband ordered the Chori Pollo. He had never had it before. Chicken and chorizo together in the same meal. It was like he discovered sliced bread he was so excited to try it. He really enjoyed it. It came with flour tortillas and he thought it was really good. I ordered the Polo Loco which was chicken and cheese sauce with rice, guacamole and lettuce. The flavor and everything was good. I think I was a little bummed out how flat they beat the chicken down. It does make it cook fast and even, but seemed to be a little dry. Someone at the table ordered fried ice cream and loved every second of it. Overall everyone at the table was happy. No one left hungry. The waitress got busy and we had to leave so we had to get up and go pay without waiting for a ticket, but other than that the over all experience was good. I think we might come back as there were some menu items that we had not seen before and would like to try in the future.

What a great find here in Johnston! We were looking for some mexican food and didn't feel like…read moredriving to Ankeny for our usual spot. On a whim we tried Nuevo, and were really happy we did. Don't let the modest facade or the location (a strip mall behind a gas station) fool you, this place is the real deal. We were greeted at the door and were seated in a booth right away, but there's also a patio with some nice shade if you want to eat outside. The service was prompt, and the meal was about the right pace. Our food was awesome, especially the Tacos al Carbon. I would definitely order this again. Our son really enjoyed the chicken quesadillas, but not as much as the free ice cream dessert that everyone received at the end of the meal - it was great surprise. Overall, this family run restaurant really exceed my expectations, we can't wait to eat here again.

If you live in Johnston and don't love Plaza Mexico (now Nuevo Mexico), you're missing out!…read moreHonestly, I've tried a lot of Mexican places in both Iowa and Minnesota and this place is still my favorite. They changed management a few years ago but kept a lot of the same staff and same favorites that make this place amazing. The menu is extensive but not overwhelming, and avoids the common problem of everything seeming the same. Their specials are unique and they offer everything from tacos to seafood entrees. I've never had anything I didn't love here. The chips and salsa are ACTUALLY free unlimited refills (with no judgments passed), and I always get their cheese dip--it's delish! Their servings are MASSIVE. Served with great presentation on a large round white plate, it's chow time. You can get a great meal (and take half home for leftovers) for lunch special prices of $6-$9 and dinner entrees from $9-$12! I personally love the street tacos, tacos al carbon, and chicken enchiladas. Their ingredients are fresh and steak is amazing! Finally, they end your meal with free sopas (ice cream on a crispy dessert chip drizzled with chocolate sauce, honey, and cinnamon)! This place never disappoints and is a staple in the neighborhood.

I enjoyed it. Great Mexican beer on tap for what I thought was reasonable prices. Chips and salsa are good. You have to get the Hildago Molcajete.
