An 11 and 8 year old review warrants an updated one. Old West is a staple in this area that is always mentioned when people are looking for Mexican food. The parking lot is often to the brim and there's a reason for that. We came on a Sunday, after church, for lunch. The parking lot had plenty of spaces available and plenty of open tables. We were greeted and promptly seated. They have your standard Mexican fare of tacos, enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas, etc. We appreciate the well-priced kids meals and the options they have for the kids. Our daughter loves their kids quesadilla and adds shrimp to it. It's one of her favorite things and she begs to eat here. Our son is hit or miss on Mexican food so he'll often get a more "American" food item. My husband appreciates the amount of food they serve and never goes hungry, even at lunch. I've always enjoyed the food I have received and usually have enough to take home for another meal. Between good service and good food, this is a great choice for Mexican food.

This is my second time in Des Moine. My first experience I had take out fajitas. They were absolutely delicious!! My second time I fined in and had a chicken quesadilla. It was shreddedchivjen not my fav but I ate it. ! Get the guac!

#8, but not quite?

Waiter is efficient and smiled. Clientele is family, nice happy sounds. Noise absorption is not a priority. Chips (made here) and salsa needed hot sauce to spice it up some. (I do like it hotter). Ordered the #8. Two tacos ( pick your favorite), and an enchilada. Wanted rice and beans, ordered separately. Waiting on Mexicano Guacamole. Order came not as expected, but it all tasted just

When we entered, the cashier girl did not greet us, just asked how many people. We got seated to a booth, they did not offer us a high chair for baby. The place was not even busy yet, and we had to wait about 5 minutes until we got our waters and chips and salsa. The shrimp i had ordered was cooked too long, looked like pieces of chicken. We also had ordered a taco salad and the beef was bland. The meat was stuck together like it was just thrown in the bowl. The steak meat was not flavorful. The servers did not come back to ask if everything was okay, and if we needed water refills. I am certainly not trying this restaurant again.

I arrived to Old West around 5:15 for a Sunday Dinner. The décor of the restaurant was beautiful and the music that played was mainly modern. At the time, the place was not as busy as I expected but filled up as I finished my meal around 6:00 P.M. I ordered a regular fountain coke but if you prefer a smoother and sweeter coke they also have imported bottles from Mexico that has natural cane sugar and not high fruticose corn syrup. Waiter was super patience and got my order in fast and my food came faster. My order was comprised of a Chile Colorado and and combination #2 (which included two enchiladas and a taco). They start you off with chips and salsas and while the salsa was not spicy, it was still well seasoned. Both plates had come with side of rice and beans. I was in disgust when I tasted the ground beef in both enchiladas and the taco. It had appear as there was no season and the taco had like water in the meat as if it was never fully cooked. The Chile Colorado was great but used a cheaper meat option then the usual chunks it most restaurant make. Toward the end of the meal I could not stand the ground beef of the enchiladas ruined my appetite. I gave this a 4 out of 5, while I didn't not enjoy the ground beef, I did enjoy the Chile Colorado very much. The overall restaurant and the people working in this greatly impacted this score.

Enchiladas are properly seasoned as one would find in Mexico. No big chunks of onion or peppers.

We sat more than 5 minutes before we were greeted and when we finally were it was to be told the server would be right with us. Absolutely unacceptable in any restaurant, never mind at this price point. Obviously by then we were ready to order. No apologies about the wait, no welcome or offer to answer questions, make recommendations, so on like you'd expect from this caliber of restaurant. We had a calamari appetizer that was average at best. I ordered the chicken piccata and mashed potatoes. The chicken was average quality and in preparation, taste was not at all like your traditional or typical piccata that you would expect. No lemon, buttery or caper flavor. Instead a pile of onions on top which probably drown out any taste there might have been. The mashed potatoes were swimming in grease. My friend ordered a steak which she said was excellent and prepared perfectly at medium as requested. She opted for the baked potato which was definitely better than the mashed. Our meals came with salad and bread, both of which were very good.

My wife, stepson, and I tried this place for the first time tonight. My wife said she wanted steak…read moreand was considering the Big Steer in Altoona. I suggested here instead, mainly because none of us had been here before. I'm glad I did. We went on a Friday night. There was snow on the ground and several parking spaces available. We walked in from the lot behind the building and immediately realized how cozy this restaurant actually is. There had to be fewer than 20 tables, and a few spaces at the bar. We were told there would be a 20 minute wait. One of the bartenders struck up a conversation with us while we were waiting for our table. We could tell there were a lot of regulars here because the bartenders greeted most of the folks by name. And most of the folks were also greeting other guests by name. When we weren't talking to the bartender we were watching him pour the drinks. They were clearly not stingy with the alcohol here. In fact, all 3 of us decided to order drinks with our food That's something we don't normally do. For our meals, I ordered the 16-oz New York strip and my wife and stepson both ordered ribeyes. We each got a dinner salad and baked potato to go with the steaks. The salads were a classic, minimal dinner salad with lettuce, cheese, croutons, and a small cup of dressing. The thing is, the dressing was more than adequate to cover my salad. While we waited for our steaks we were mesmerized by how efficiently the wait staff worked the room. Tables are fairly close here, and the waitresses were constantly moving back and forth. The service was great. The atmosphere was great. And we kept noticing all the people coming in were greeted by name by the staff and other guests. Soon after finishing our salads, the steaks arrived. They were cooked perfectly. There was even a sprig of parsley on each plate. I haven't seen garnish on a plate like that in decades. I managed to get a photo of my New York strip, but not either of the ribeyes. We all dug in quickly. My wife soon commented on how good the baked potato was. I wondered how good it could be. There were packages of butter on the table and the potatoes came with sour cream. There had been no mandatory list of questions about add-ons to the potatoes. After eating half my steak I decided it was time to find out. This was one of the best baked potatoes I can remember eating. It wasn't over-done or under-done. It was cooked perfectly. Even after 15 or so minutes of sitting on my pate while I ate steak it was still hot. Everything was cooked perfectly. The drinks were good. You could tell all the guests were enjoying themselves. In the end, I was the only one at my table who didn't take home leftovers. Our waitress promptly arrived with to-go boxes. I'm pretty sure all 3 of us are looking forward to going back. And it's a good thing I didn't drive. I was feeling my one little drink on the way home.

Yet, it has new owners as of this year but I'll bet nothing much has changed since "the good ol' days". As you can see from my outdoor pics, and my pic of the chairs (red vinyl), it's a throwback to yesteryear. Not to say this is bad, just to get an understanding of what you're walking into. At lunchtime on this week day, there was plenty of parking in the rear (and the restaurant was almost full). The tables were a bit close and it was a bit noisy, but everyone was polite and in good spirits. As you can see from my pic, we started lunch with Onion Rings. These are relatively thinly sliced and breaded with batter that ends up being quite crunchy. There was plenty, and then some. We shared a Garbage Salad (see my pic). This truly has a bit of everything in it. It starts off Greek style with deli meats, artichoke hearts, olives and ends with shrimp: all topped on a bed of lettuce and veggies. It's served with Italian dressing, which had usual, traditional flavors. We finished with Jess's Slow Cooked Ribs (see my pic): this is a staple of theirs highlighting their signature BBQ sauce. There was plenty of meat on the ribs, which fell off the bone with the slightest of tugs. The BBQ smoke was earthy and paired well with the sauce. Their sauce was quite sweet, ample and tasted like it was applied after the ribs were cooked

Bravo!! All round,…read morethe classy steakhouse hit every mark. We left happy and more than satisfied. Located in a grand office building, walking through the restaurant doors, we were met with a dark, warm and inviting room. Dark varnished wood, touches of green accents and a giant brass bull, create the perfect backdrop for a fabulous meal. We had 2 servers that could not have been more helpful. They were so sweet and worked in unison to care for our every need. Every aspect of our meal was perfect. The warm sourdough bread was soft and crunchy. The special lobster bites were crunchy. The steaks cooked perfectly. The sides were better than usual. But our desserts finished with perfection. The cream poured by the server, the extra rich ice cream and my soufflé were all masterpieces.

Staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. We ordered the Delmonico steak with bone marrow butter, sautéed spinach, mac and cheese, beef carpaccio, house bread, and two glasses of Malbec. The food was delicious, with a few notes. The Delmonico is a hefty, 24-oz bone-in steak. We ordered it medium. It came out quickly, yet overcooked. Upon inspection and taste, we expressed concern with our waitress who removed and replaced it with a perfectly cooked medium. After this substitution, absolutely no complaints. The manager complimented us with a beef carpaccio, which was kind of him. It was covered with a bed of arugula, which was a bit more than necessary for the quantity of meat. Stellar mac and cheese, good balance of pasta and sauce, with texture from breadcrumbs. Great eating experience. The spinach was well seasoned, with very strong garlic flavors. A bit of extra sauté time would do a lot for a milder, more palatable flavor. Heavy wine pours to celebrate or Valentine's day dinner. Thank you 801 Chophouse!
