Very fine establishment with great food and service! When in Des Moines a must stop! Great steaks and seafood, made our own surf & turf!

4.6* (out of 5) Food: 5* Atmosphere: 5* Value: 3* Service: 5* Would I go back / Recommend?: 5* (Definitely) Total check/person: $143 07/18/2025 I've heard great things about this place and always wanted to give it a try...but knew enough about them to realize it would take a very special occasion to justify a dinner here with my budget. That special occasion presented itself this week with our 38th Wedding Anniversary - so I made the decision to splurge for the night! While the rumors I had heard led me to believe that the restaurant was on the top floor of the building, it didn't take long to find the elevator access blocked. We then followed the signs to the location on the 2nd floor at the top of the stairs and on the East side. While the entrance from the building was a bit hidden (see pictures), once we stepped inside we immediately transitioned into a what would be expected of a high-end restaurant (see pictures). We started with a Troon (grapefruit vodka & grapefruit juice - see picture) and an 801 Special Martini (vodka, gin & blue cheese olives - see picture). The Troon was especially tasty and the martini was a bit strong for me, so I asked for some brine to 'dirty it up a bit' - which I liked. Following the delicious Table Bread (see picture), we ordered the Prime Beef Carpaccio (see picture) and Wedge Salad (see picture) - shared them both and would highly recommend both of them. While I kind of wanted to try all of the seafood on the menu, since this was a reknowned steakhouse, we decided to share the 30oz Porterhouse (see picture). While we ordinarily order medium rare, our server (Laura) advised us that their medium rare is cool in the middle, so we adjusted to medium along with the suggestion to precut it and were extremely pleased with the results (see plated picture). It was cooked to perfection, with the butter and mushrooms only enhancing each bite! Of course we couldn't leave without the capstone of the meal and neither of us had ever had a souffle, so we went with the Chocolate Souffle (see picture) - and OH, was it delicious!! As if it wasn't good enough by itself, it was also served with 3 different sauces to add (Chocolate, Vanilla & Berry Compote) - you will want to try it! Our experience was a great as it gets, with various staff members wishing us "Happy Anniversary" throughout the evening, a personalized Happy Anniversary menu and a complimentary dessert. The only thing I struggled with on a review like this is how to rate "Value" when the cost is more than double the high side of what we usually spend when we go out for dinner. For us and our budget...we just have to reserve our return trip for another very special occasion! If you found this review helpful, please show your appreciation with a Like or a Follow. Nice steakhouse downtown in Des Moines. Came home late from work and wanted a nice dinner. Everything around it closed at 9pm and this place was open until 10pm. I came there starving and I was very surprised of how expensive it was even for a steakhouse but I figured that the steaks must be amazing. I ordered the filet mignon with bearnaise and garlic mashed potatoes. The sides are expensive but they make smaller portions on request if you want just enough for a single person. I normally order well done which I did this time too, however I ordered it butterflied. The steak was ok but tasted burnt as it was overcooked even for well done. Cool ambiance and great personnel!! Not sure if I want to come back $100 with tip for an 8oz overcooked steak and the mashed potatoes was also subpar.

Excellent traditional steakhouse with an extensive menu and wine list. I highly recommend the wet aged rib eye and the oven baked cream spinach. Excellent professional service. Reasonable pricing for what it is. Note that the nearest entry is on High Street, not Grand.

Pretty good spot. Picked this place since it was one of the nicer restaurants opened later at night. The Prime Rib was one of the best that I've ever had. Lamb was pretty good, as was the fish. The aged blue cheese potatoes were interesting and tasty. We brought along a Roy Piper 2013 cab. Corkage was fair. Service was attentive and the ambiance was chill.

Fabulous experience from start to end. My husband and I started with the oysters, which were amazing. We then both had the New York Strip. The server went through the menu and thoroughly described each cut of meat and how it was prepared. We finished it off with New York Cheesecake and Death By Chocolate Cake. This is our favorite place to eat in Des Moines!

We went to celebrate some recent life changes and we enjoyed every second of the experience! We did not have wine, although I love the wine list. Very well curated (except the Pinot Noir option- which we had a good chuckle about). The steaks were perfect, and we even received a complementary dessert, which was a welcome surprise. It was the best I've ever had! The service was above spectacular. And the ambiance was wonderful- it felt fancy and welcoming at the same time!

Another fabulous visit to the top steakhouse in town. Tonight was daddy daughter date night for another 4.0 semester. The evening started with oysters and escargot. Both were awesome. Steaks were as expected and the lions head mushrooms were awesome. No trip here would be complete with out a soufflé. Every trip here is memorable and you can't put a price on a fabulous celebratory meal with your daughter.

When in Des Moines my wife and I love to have Dinner at 801 Chophouse. The Prime Rib is the best I have ever had... anywhere!! I have tried for year to find other places closer to Cedar Rapids and nothing even comes close! The service is outstanding and overall fair price for the quality of food you get. We love this place and is our go to for special occasions.

There were two other tables in the whole restaurant so needless to say it was quiet. Our server was sweet but obviously not trained on efficient and fast service but was probably encouraged to run like a bunny when things go sideways. We ordered two glasses of wine and an old fashioned. Figured I just got off of a plane so why not get the evening going with some bourbon and have a Plan B with the glass of wine when I am ready. Two glasses of wine were delivered but no old fashioned. Who does this? Anyhow, old fashioned came out next. We ordered a cup of soup and a small salad to start with and then ordered a burger, medium, with fries and the pasta bolognese. The soup and salad came out but there was a long stretch of time before entrees came out. When they finally arrived the burger was very rare inside so my wife let the server know and she apologized and scurried off. I tried to wait but it was getting cold so I slowly nibbled. After 20 minutes, I flagged down our server and asked if the burger was coming out and she said "oh, do you want another one"? It was now 9pm and they were closing but we were not leaving until we enjoyed a medium burger. When the new burger came out, she said the "owner made it himself. We cut it in half to check the temperature it was still pink. How can an owner of a restaurant not know how to make a medium-medium well burger? And why didn't he walk out and deliver it himself and apologize? Not a word! My dish was finished and plate was gone while my wife finally had her burger. We had planned to eat together that was not going to happen tonite. She ate half and we took the rest of it to go. With wine, an old fashioned and the worst dinner experience, we spent $174 with tip. Huge mistake. Here is my tip: train your servers on how to take care of customers. To the cooks, invest in a thermometer if you can't tell when a burger is medium. To the owner, step out and make sure your customers are happy and enjoying your food.

My wife started with a Smoked Margarita (see picture) and I opted for the El Chapo (see picture) - both were delicious. The great thing about a small plates restaurant, especially with 4 people, is that you can try a bunch of different things...and that we did! We each chose one small plate and I'll say up front that all of them were wonderful and I wouldn't hesitate to order any of them again. We started with a BBQ, Pork & Apple Flatbread (see picture), followed by the Deconstructed Ribeye Nachos (see picture), Fondue (see picture) and Graziano Sausage & Pepperoni Flatbread (see picture). Of all of these, our favorite was the Fondue and Deconstructed Ribeye Nachos...but both Flatbreads were also very good. The only negatives to the atmosphere were having to go downstairs for the restroom and a bachelorette party next to us that got a little loud. I'm not really an upscale guy when it comes to my typical stomping grounds. More often I stay more West and don't frequent downtown without a specific purpose. There's a lot of great businesses downtown. I'm just a small town guy and I sometimes feel a little out of place in the heart of the metro. And anyone else hate that back-in parking found in the E Village? Lol That being said... The bar has a nice vibe, quiet and dimly lit (at least at the time of day we were there), and with large windows with a view of both E Walnut and E 4th St. Parking options mainly consist of metered parking on the adjacent streets. The food menu includes mostly finger foods. Flatbreads, bruschetta, and charcuterie. The flatbreads served were pretty good. I really liked the honey garlic alfredo flatbread ($12 on the menu)! The gentleman manning the bar was doing a fantastic job especially considering our event started at 530pm and he was pretty much hit with a rush of all of us attending. The old fashioned I ordered was done well and I enjoyed it (Bulleit bourbon and $10 on the menu). A lot of their signature cocktails are named keeping with a railroad motif.
