The tenderloin was massive. And the broccoli cheese soup was a star. Tried the peach pie as well which I thoroughly enjoyed. The beer selection was limited and simple. They have a bar with alcohol. My brother had a Jim Beam & Coke. He said that it was mixed right, not too strong or too weak. The waitress zipped by our table frequently to chat & check on us while waiting for our food. That was really nice. The place was a little noisy, but not so bad we couldn't have a conversation. Our food came out hot & fresh. I definitely know why they won an award for their tenderloin. It was one of the best ones I've ever had & I'm looking forward to going back to have another one! The onion rings were outstanding too. I was very satisfied with my meal. Our bill came to around $66 before tip. We left a pretty good tip because our service was outstanding. We ordered our food, and I had ordered mine without onion, as well as a salad. The order took a while--which again, Friday night, somewhat busy, so that's ok. When the food arrived, it was not good. My entree had tons of onion, and even though I removed them, it still tasted very onion-y, as something covered in grilled onions tends to be. It was also not hot, at all, and my fries were not hot as well. My mom had fish with hash browns, and her fish was somewhat warm, but hash browns were not. Not sure how long our food sat after being done, but obviously quite a while. My salad, which arrived at the same time as our meal, had no dressing, and we needed to flag down our server to get it, as she never stopped back at our table to check on us. I ended up not eating most of my entree and just eating the salad. We were very disappointed as we had been really looking forward to the meal, and I feel like if the food would have been prepared correctly--and served hot--it could have been great. Unfortunately, I don't think we will take the chance again.

I've stopped in Walnut IA many times on my CO-WI-CO roadtrips, always turning south to the gas station & Econolodge hotel, oblivious to this gem of a diner just 1/2mi north. Found it last night, Mon 8pm... I thought "probably closed." Nope. Open till 9! Walked in & was immediately impressed with the size, sports decor, & friendly staff. Owner Kyle welcomed me to a bar seat and noted the $10 Special chicken plate w/2 sides; then I saw the beers on tap & realized the BACKFIELD is doing it RIGHT in the sticks of Iowa The menu has 3x more items than I woulda' expected. The tables, bar & bathrooms = CLEAN. Btw, the chicken special... tastiest chic breasts I've ever had, honest I'll be planning all my roadtrips now with a stop here for food/drink. Large cutlet, real mashed potatoes, not powdered. And the appetizer offerings makes this a favorite place to eat. And they do have a 10 per cent veterans discount. Roomy, attentive wait staff and darn good music to listen to when eating there.
