It took me three years to find an authentic Tex-Mex restaurant in Florida. All that time I searched in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa, cities with tons of great restaurants a never found one. Who knew, I'd finally find it in of all places, Stuart Florida!! For those of you who are not aware, just like Chinese restaurants in the States are actually not what the Chinese actually eat, most "Mexican" restaurants in the States are really not "Mexican" in the truest sense but "Tex-Mex". Tex-Mex is the States version of Mexican food. Having said that, Rancho Chico is the real deal. Their chips hold up well to not only their excellent salsa but also their authentic chile con queso. Start off with their jalapeño poppers, not too hot with extra crunchy breading coating fresh jalapeño's with creamy cheese interiors. Move on to their assortment of enchiladas which are as authentic as they get. I heartily recommend their Polo A La Crème, the best I've ever had, even from the many Tex-Mex restaurants in Texas I have visited where Tex-Mex originated and is an art! Their accompanying refried beans and rice are cooked to perfection. Or if you prefer, enjoy their quesadillas amply stuffed with cheddar and jack cheese. Although we had no room to sample them, their Super Nachos looked killer. Make sure you try the giant margaritas and finally complete your feast with their fried ice cream. To top it all off you'll enjoy all this with great service from "real" Mexican servers and leave with change in your pocket! The good about the visit is we did not wait long to sit as is was Friday night around 6. The server team was running around pretty good and it wasn't long before we ordered drinks. My wife ordered flautas with chicken and they were not good, very overdone and hard. I realize they should be crispy but these were hard and very dark. My wife mentioned flavorless. As a matter of fact she asked for sour cream to dip them in and we were charged 1.50 for a dollop . I ordered the super buro with pork and it seemed fine. We went here after my MIL passed because we didn't want to cook. We had a great meal. My son loved his cheesy chicken over rice. I loved my veggie bowl and my SIL loved her ceviche it was a large portion for an app she took home some. She loved her fish tacos. My Aunt had a taco salad and liked it a lot. The rest of the group had tacos and loved them. The server was great I like when they can anticipate and have another drink for me. Today was my first & last time at this restaurant. I ordered a Tostada $8.99 for lunch. the waiter brought out a taco salad. I told him I ordered a tostada & his reply was do you want this . I said no. He took my dish back to the kitchen & returned quickly with my lunch. It was not the tostada. There was no cheese, sour cream & refried beans. My 3 friends looked at it & we all agreed he just put the taco salad on a new plate & brought sour cream. You could see there were no beans but he argued that they were there, just not a lot. My plate consisted of shredded lettuce, a few tomatoes, ground beef & a small flat taco shell. He brought the bill & it said Ranco Salad & again he said your salad & that are the same price but again he was wrong. He charged me one dollar more. Taco Tuesday at Rancho Chico wasn't incredible but it was good. I was expecting to at least take the Enchilada in my combo home for work tomorrow but I cleaned my plate, quite literally. I ordered the two tacos and enchilada combo for 12.99 and thought the portions were a little smaller than other Mexican restaurants, although, I did come quite hungry. The complementary chips came out super hot but the salsa was a bit too runny for my liking. I thought the ground beef/ mince in the tacos was quite good and overall would be back if there were options for my wife. We came with the kids and my mother in law, who also enjoyed her Chile Relleno combo but my wife didn't eat because there were no vegan options on the menu. Our server wasn't the most fluent in English and couldn't really explain the menu. He offered to upcharge for substitutions, which out of principle, my wife declined and just had chips for dinner. This is a spot in Florida my parents took me to when I was visiting on vacation. We were greeted and seated right away and brought waters and menus. We started with chips and salsa a spicy and medium option, the chips were fresh, and not oily which is a weird thing to think about but I have my reasons. For a drink I had a frozen margarita, mango flavored with salt on the rim. It was delicious and I would have guzzled it down if not for the frozen aspect and the fear of brain freeze. For dinner I had to get the fish tacos because when in Florida seafood is my go to. The tacos were made from white fish, I loved them. Such a tasty good flavor, fresh and seasoned well. I had some of my parents dishes as well, steak and chicken fajitas, those bites were awesome! Loved my experience! My dad got a frozen pomegranate margarita and it was tasty as well. This place has probably the best food and margarita combo I've ever experienced. For a place to have drinks as good as the food is the first green flag that I saw. OMG the Carnitas Platter I ordered was HUGE! The Carne Asada Burrito my daughter ordered was HUGE as well! We could have fed 4 people with the portions we received. I'm going to compare the food to the authentic food we eat in San Diego. As far as authenticity is was 100% spot on! The flavor and texture of the carnitas, the rice, and beans. II've been to Rancho Chico multiple times now. The food is above average, but not outstanding - except for the salsa and chips. Delicious! I've ordered the carne asada bowl three times, the first time it was superb, but the second and third time, both during the lunch hour the meat was over cooked, dry and almost burnt. Others in my party had tacos and enchiladas and they looked delicious. The portions are very generous. The restaurant is clean, lively decor, and the staff are friendly. The service is a little slow but the wait time passes quickly when your enjoying the delicious chips and salsa. And the staff is very happy to refill your chip bowl while you wait. House margarita was pretty good. (I'm usually a Patrón girl) One of our Teens loves salsa & is sometimes not happy with the salsa that comes with the chips. He loved the salsa here! Unwelcoming experience at best. Very disappointing since this has been a favorite since they opened! Unresponsive, hateful server made us feel unwelcome. He simply just ignored us. Water and soft drinks left empty and never asked if we wanted another cocktail. The food was terribel. 3 meals - Burrito meals had zero rice and beans on the side as in the menu description. Instead, burritos bland and filled with rice. The steak burrito contained an ounce of steak at best. The steak fajita meal had what appeared to be 2-3 oz of steak at best, more like a veggie fajita meal! Did they run out of steak at 12 noon? The place was not close to being full. Gets better. When asked for to-go containers, the mean waiter took one of the 1/2 full plates away while nodding, then brought back an empty box for the other 1/2 full plate. Table never bussed after appetizer (yes, we ordered appetizers), soiled plates never picked up, not enough tabletop real estate HORRIBE, almost hateful service! This was 4 friends, 3 meals, o e appetizer, 2 soft drinks, 2 cocktails. The friend who paid wanted to leave $7 on a $75 tab, but we talked her into more. Would have been well over $100 if the server did his job. We wanted a to go meal but couldn't get his attention. Would have had at least 4 more cocktails if he had just asked! We go several times @ month. We love the margaritas. And the food is pretty consistent as well. But the service is awful. Especially if your server is of a certain age! The young people working really seem to hustle. The older staff notsomuch. I suspect they are family and receive a flat hourly wage far above the other servers. It went downhill quickly from there. I had a Burrito/Chile Relleno combination. The waiter warned me that the plate was very hot and it was. What he didn't tell me was that the food was lukewarm. I was delivered a plate of tepid food, swimming in a pool of bland red sauce. Nothing good here and the server disappeared at this point. My girl ordered the "steak fajita quesadilla" which wasn't hot either and was equally bland. Needless to say, we will probably not be back.
