Today I zipped over from Lake Oswego after work and picked up a bag full. I purchased another WinCo shopping bag to transport. I usually am strolling around the aisles after midnight, but today I was among the living. It is kinda nice not having to dodge flatbeds and weave between freight stacks.

They actually said their restroom was closed - the one that that location requires to use a code to get into...like you can't even have an employee code you in. They said their restroom is "closed for the evening". Here...restroom right there, open so a person can use it and I was so grateful. And the motorized carts right there at the entrance open that I can access. Next up, I ask for something I am pretty certain they do not have but the employees actually get it - we are in it together and they are so kind, actually looking and saying they are pretty sure but.... I appreciate that so much! And when I go back to them to check out saying, oh you found that instead... Thank you for having such a great team and store.

One of the staples I love are the baked goods from Oyatsupan - sometimes the main bakery runs out of their popular breads so a reliable supply is found at Uwajimaya (although maybe not baked the same day). Uwajimaya also offers fresh mochi sometimes over the weekends. Their hot section even offers whole roasted duck, something I've never seen before. Their kitchen section offers a variety of yakitori grills, which is something I'm looking forward to buying in the future (and something I've never seen in any other store). They also carry muscavado sugar, something I've had to travel to Canada to purchase before. I like how they highlight local goods on the shelf with special signs - I did not realize The Tao of Tea was a Portland business and I'm going to visit their teahouse in the future.

Extremely Unprofessional Behavior at the Poke Counter…read more Today my friend and I drove to Uwajimaya specifically to buy fresh poke, which we usually enjoy here. When we arrived at the poke bowl service counter, we were standing in front of the menu screens trying to decide what to order. We were not in line yet, because we were still looking at the options and deciding. We had only been standing there for less than three minutes. At the time, there was an Asian male employee helping another customer. After that customer finished ordering, another male employee (tall with long hair) gestured toward me and asked if I was ready to order. I said, "Can I get a mini bowl please?" Instead of confirming my order, he immediately asked whether my friend wanted the same thing. My friend was still deciding and had not said she was ordering yet, so I politely replied that she wasn't sure yet, but I was ready to order mine. The employee then shook his head and slammed the rice container, which completely surprised me. The gesture and attitude felt very disrespectful and unnecessarily aggressive toward a customer. For context, I work in the food service industry myself, so I understand that things can get busy. However, at that moment there were no other customers waiting behind us, so the pressure and frustration displayed by this employee felt very inappropriate. Because of how uncomfortable the interaction felt, I told him that it was okay and that I would not order anymore. My friend also said it was okay and that we didn't want anything anymore. Instead of simply letting us go, the employee shouted loudly across the counter, saying "Come back, come back! What do you want? Come back!" while waving his hand at us as if we had to beg for him to serve us. We had done nothing wrong--we were simply looking at the menu and politely asked for a mini bowl. The experience left us feeling confused, pressured, and honestly quite uncomfortable. We later reported the incident to the customer service counter. The female employee there (wearing glasses) listened and said she would forward the report to management. I have visited Uwajimaya many times and usually enjoy shopping here, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. I hope management addresses this situation and reminds staff that basic courtesy and patience are essential in customer service. After the incident, we decided not to order poke and only purchased a bottled tea before leaving. We ended up going to another Japanese restaurant nearby for food instead. I'm sharing this experience not to attack the business, but to provide honest feedback. Uwajimaya has always been a place we enjoy visiting, and we would be happy to come back in the future--once we feel confident that customers will not be treated this way again by this particular employee.

The phone employee was extremely friendly and double checked even though they thought the seasoning was in stock. Recently the chain added hot pizzas back, which hopefully will reflect more good things to come in deli. We've also bought a birthday cheesecake at the bakery and they tossed in a white chocolate stamped medallion for free on another visit.

The front entrance is not a large one and the carts are very much nearly blocking it. There are a lot of plants and such as well. It looks nice but I just worry since people tend to just run right over people like me not noticing the cane. Luckily they do have easily accessible motorized carts though I leave it inside after using it in store because of the small entrance area. The self check (which was all that was open) is a lot as well. The great news is that it is a Kroger so you can use your Fred Meyer rewards card and you will need it because the prices are seemingly much higher. There are some great sales and they seem to have pretty great produce. Also, I will say that if you need flowers or things like that you will find some pretty gorgeous blooms.
