First time coming to an Uwajimaya. The store was a medium to large sized grocery store. I liked that they had sales and one of their themes making Okonomiyaki. All the things to make Okonomiyaki was on sale (cabbage, Kewpie mayo, Okonomiyaki sauce, bonito flakes, Okonomiyaki flour mix), so I obliged and we made some at our Airbnb. We also bought from produce, snacks, and poke. Everything we had was really fresh. The only thing that I bought that wasn't my thing was Sakura Cookies by Nakaura. They were pretty, but the flavor was odd and they're a bit pasty. Our cashier (Shiow) was super friendly and heard us speak Mandarin. We had a fun conversation with her and she told us to come back for Senior discount days on Tuesday (10% off, 60 and older). They also have Student discount (10% off) on Friday evenings (6PM to close with valid college ID). read more

This place is awesome if you're looking to make authentic Japanese food like bento boxes, ramen, udon, etc. It's a lot bigger than it looks on the inside and there's a great selection for fresh sushi/sashimi ingredients. I was in town and wanted to find some Hawaii ingredients. I was very impressed with what a giant variety of food, beauty and house ware items available! I was like a kid in a candy store. I found a good handful of items from Hawaii that I was either wanting or needed while in town. If you make lau lau, I found some nice luau leaves for a very good price. It wasn't all stem, like how some of the store sells em so it was a plus. My daughters enjoyed the variety of musubi in the hot case. Reminded them of Foodland. They said it was good. read more

I went to get a regular poke lunch set. I tried two kinds of poke for $12. It was a really good deal. I tried the salmon furikake and the spicy mayo salmon. It was delicious and they gave a generous amount. You can even pick a side and I love the seaweed salad and again, a good amount. The rice was cooked nicely and they also sprinkled a hearty amount of furikake on top. Everything was nice and good but it's not 5 stars because at the end I was very thirsty haha. I wonder if the other poke options are salty, maybe I'll try one that's not as heavily seasoned but the flavors were good when I ate it! read more

I always look forward to visiting Uwajimaya. There is always so much to see and discover, and their stock rotates a fair amount so there's something new to look at each trip. One of the staples I love are the baked goods from Oyatsupan - sometimes the main bakery runs out of their popular breads so a reliable supply is found at Uwajimaya (although maybe not baked the same day). Uwajimaya also offers fresh mochi sometimes over the weekends. Their hot section even offers whole roasted duck, something I've never seen before. Their kitchen section offers a variety of yakitori grills, which is something I'm looking forward to buying in the future (and something I've never seen in any other store). They also carry muscavado sugar, something I've had to travel to Canada to purchase before. I like how they highlight local goods on the shelf with special signs - I did not realize The Tao of Tea was a Portland business and I'm going to visit their teahouse in the future. read more

Thank goodness I found this place. They have a poki counter with lomi lomi salmon made exactly how we make it in Hawaii not only that manapua, limu and taco poki. Musubi delicious and ate it in my car so I didnt have to share lol. Also mochi donuts so good. It is crowded cause it has everything you will need. Great selection, I found a lot of unique items. The store itself is quite large, it was clean, organized well, and not too busy. Which was nice because I was able to leisurely walk around and look at everything. They have a large library with some cool office supplies and a ton of pens to write with. The tea and candy selection is fantastic. I'm a big tea drinker so I felt like I hit the jackpot!! The check out lines moved quickly and the cashier was friendly. I would have given 5 stars but the prices are higher than other local shops for the same items. I do take into consideration that these items are imported and will cost more in general. Last time I came, the cashier said they have fresh mochi on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Came on a Sunday and there were a few left. I'm so excited! I should have gotten his name but the Polynesian guy at the poke' counter was so nice and friendly, gave us a sample and even offered us more samples. I have to say, the Yuzu shoyu scallop poke' is so good! He even gave me tips on making our own laulau. read more

Extremely Unprofessional Behavior at the Poke Counter Today my friend and I drove to Uwajimaya specifically to buy fresh poke, which we usually enjoy here. When we arrived at the poke bowl service counter, we were standing in front of the menu screens trying to decide what to order. We were not in line yet, because we were still looking at the options and deciding. We had only been standing there for less than three minutes. At the time, there was an Asian male employee helping another customer. After that customer finished ordering, another male employee (tall with long hair) gestured toward me and asked if I was ready to order. I said, "Can I get a mini bowl please?" Instead of confirming my order, he immediately asked whether my friend wanted the same thing. My friend was still deciding and had not said she was ordering yet, so I politely replied that she wasn't sure yet, but I was ready to order mine. The employee then shook his head and slammed the rice container, which completely surprised me. The gesture and attitude felt very disrespectful and unnecessarily aggressive toward a customer. For context, I work in the food service industry myself, so I understand that things can get busy. However, at that moment there were no other customers waiting behind us, so the pressure and frustration displayed by this employee felt very inappropriate. Because of how uncomfortable the interaction felt, I told him that it was okay and that I would not order anymore. My friend also said it was okay and that we didn't want anything anymore. Instead of simply letting us go, the employee shouted loudly across the counter, saying "Come back, come back! What do you want? Come back!" while waving his hand at us as if we had to beg for him to serve us. We had done nothing wrong--we were simply looking at the menu and politely asked for a mini bowl. The experience left us feeling confused, pressured, and honestly quite uncomfortable. We later reported the incident to the customer service counter. The female employee there (wearing glasses) listened and said she would forward the report to management. I have visited Uwajimaya many times and usually enjoy shopping here, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. I hope management addresses this situation and reminds staff that basic courtesy and patience are essential in customer service. After the incident, we decided not to order poke and only purchased a bottled tea before leaving. We ended up going to another Japanese restaurant nearby for food instead. I'm sharing this experience not to attack the business, but to provide honest feedback. Uwajimaya has always been a place we enjoy visiting, and we would be happy to come back in the future--once we feel confident that customers will not be treated this way again by this particular employee. read more

Located off of Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway in Southwest Portland. This is one of my most favorite groceries stores to go to. There is a massive parking lot out front that is almost always full. Inside lies a vast selection of almost every category of food. They also sell fresh seafood, very high quality meat, and a handful of bulk items, such as rice. There is a wide variety of hot bar items available as well as ready-to-go food items. The produce selection is well crafted and it almost always fresh. I love this place. It's a twin store with its main location in Seattle. I have been to both and they are both fun. This one is Beaverton has a decent square footage, a ramen restaurant, a bookstore, and some other things going on beside the main supermarket. The best things here are of course the Japanese forward goods. The sashimi, the produce, the seafood, the snacks, and extremely fun collection of Japanese souvenirs. It's like a bit of teleporting to actual Japan. Price here is ok, not cheap but also not expensive. I tend to think the quality here is well controlled overall. read more

The people are so nice and want to help which is refreshing. It is truly shocking how night and day the experience here is after going to other grocery stores. I wish we had an Uwajimaya near me! It's a great place for lovers of Japanese and Hawaiian grocery stores. We stopped by while visiting the Portland area. They have a huge vending machine area in the back with Sanrio type goodies. Kind of pricey ($4-$6 each) but the kiddos enjoyed them and you can use credit card to buy the tokens if you don't have cash. I also really like the prepared food area. Multiple masubi flavors, onigiri, sandwiches, some fried/tempura items, crispy pork belly, rice plates, kalua pork, sushi, poke bowls and more. Not to mention the bakery section! There are packaged bakery items as well as a Papa Beard's. I would definitely visit again next time I'm back. read more

This place is an absolute gem for Asian groceries, household and kitchen items, and even ready-made food. They have a Kinokuniya section inside too, which makes it even better! I love it so much I'll walk a mile from the MAX just to shop or take a stroll here. The store is always clean and well-organized, and the staff is super friendly and welcoming. Sometimes they have the popular peach ice cream (so addicting!), and they occasionally offer food samples near the entrance. I usually come for their organic tea selection, especially Tao of Tea, and I also grab rice cakes, produce, and pantry staples. So the reason why I'm giving is shop three stars because it's a wonderful shop to buy Japanese Niche items like bouncia body wash which is my favorite body wash basically it's like Dove but on steroids! Its super creamy and fluffy! I'm African-American and I'm really into Japanese culture so I cook a lot of Japanese food and recipes at home. I shop at places like Hong Phat for majority of my main staples in my cooking. As long as you know what your looking for you can most definitely make a LOT of Japanese dishes with what you find at Hong Phat and Foubon. I was shocked that this store didnt have any fried tofu, my favorite Japanese short grain rice the suka brand with the pink cherry blossoms on the bag was also most 14 bucks for 4.4lbs which is only 9 bucks at Hong Phat!! I was shocked. The fresh veggie section was expensive and so was the meat. A small pack of skinless chicken thighs for 11 bucks (i need these to make oyakodon) when I got a much bigger pack at Hong Phat for 7 and yes they were high quality and skinless. It honestly made me very sad how expensive everything is when shopping at asain grocery stores are supposed to be cheap and affordable . Like it shouldn't cost me and arm and 2 legs to cook yummy Japanese dishes . Also the eggs where pricy too! I could get 18 count of eggs for 2.69 at Hong Phat this store wanted almost 8 bucks. Wild..... The workers are freindly for the most part. They have great to go food items and treats! But I wouldnt shop here for my main staples.
