Just before we got to the freeway, we saw a hand painted sign on the side of the road introducing "El Campito Farm." Thank god that I hit the brakes to investigate them further. Their setup was as simple as can be. The entire operation consisted of a farmer, a few tables covered in burlap, and a respectable display of the freshest, grown on-site, organic vegetables that I have ever seen. We were on our way home to make fish tacos, but all we had was fish and tortillas. We had no fresh ingredients! But that's where Phillip(the farmer) and El Campito Farm stepped in. We picked through their selection and took a bunch of FRESH veggies home to complete our shopping list. They offered up all of the following in the middle of October: multi-colored beets, baby gourmet lettuce, fresh cilantro, green onions, fancy crimson forest onions, trumpet mushrooms, yellow squash, green squash, spherical squash, butternut squash, yellow carrots, etc... It is impressive for any local farm to produce all of these veggies simultaneously, but especially during October. What makes them my new favorite place to get produce, is that they grow sustainable food. El Campito Farm is organic, and they take it a step further. They have a philosophy that demands total respect for the Earth, their harvest, and ultimately, the families that rely on their fields for food. Most important question...How is their produce? It is superior to anything that I have ever purchased in a store. We used their onions, squash, cilantro, and mushrooms to prepare dinner tonight. My wife had to go lay down and relax after dinner. Why? Because the food was so good, that she had eaten the entire massive portion of food that I served her. The veggies were crisp, and maintained their distinct flavors like they should. Excellent! Think about it. El Campito Farm is producing high quality, locally grown, organic food for the community to enjoy. They are providing local jobs. And they are protecting the land by not abusing it. They love what they are doing and it shows. I will be back very soon. Until then, we will tell everyone about what you are doing out in the mountains of San Diego.

It has several vendors, but they are too tightly crammed together, and the narrow gap to walk past them is way too small. People bring giant strollers that fit 2-4 kids and they take up the whole walkway. The whole thing is a giant cluster and whoever came up with the logistics needs to be reassigned. There are a mix of vendors selling items, making food (breakfast lunch), chiropractors, cookie companies, salsa companies, etc. OF course there are some farmers with their fruits and veggies and there are also people selling fresh fish. There are some good options if you can find parking, deal with the chaos and crowd, and the train bells. I know it is on Saturdays from like 8 am - 2 pm, but I am not sure if it is every weekend or just certain weekends.

Every Friday and Saturday, Taj opens his farm stand to the public, and it's here that you will find freshest, most delicious organic produce you've ever purchased in your life. My wife and I stop by every Saturday morning to see what Taj has, and we're always amazed at the selection, which changes from week to week depending on what's ready for harvest. Yesterday, for example, we bought broccoli, carrots, celery, lettuce, spring onions, and edible (!!) flowers. Then, Taj told us to wait a minute. He went out to his gardens and harvested some sugar snap peas for us right then and there. Oh. My. God. The sweetest, most delicious snap peas I've ever eaten. We of course bought some of those too. And that's the real beauty of going to the farm stand yourself instead of just doing a CSA box. You get to interact with Taj. He'll tell you what he loves best at the moment, and introduce you to some things you might not have otherwise tried (hello, black radish!). You'll also find fresh eggs (we have our own chickens so I don't need to buy those), lemons, and a variety of other produce. Whatever's fresh. Whatever's delicious. And if you need more of something, Taj is more than happy to go out in the garden and pick it for you. Extra bonus: the prices are very reasonable. The farm stand is currently open only on Friday from 2:30 to 5:00 PM, and Saturday from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Check the website for updates or give Taj a call.

If you can get over the fact that parking is a nightmare (tip: get there early and use the free parking lot at the DMV) you'll love every second of your time here. We got there around 9:30am and were lucky enough to snag a spot at the aforementioned lot - about a 5 minute walk from the start of the market. From there, we took about 2 hours to fully explore, including a quick stop at a cute and affordably-priced vintage stop right off the vendors' booths. There is a huge variety of goods, mostly consumables with a few jewelry and handmade goods worked in. The vast majority of consumables booths had samples. I tried balsamic vinegars, loads of dips, some fresh fruit and tomatoes, bread, tempeh, you name it. I wasn't even hungry for lunch after going! If you aren't keen on samples, there are lots of prepared food booths for a full meal. Prices are reasonable. I bought a delicious Mediterranean 3 layer dip for $6 and my brother got a massive focaccia loaf for $10. The vendors were very friendly and helpful. Many (most?) also had business cards with shipping info if you're like me and have a full suitcase already. I would consider this market a must-visit if you find yourself in San Diego on a Sunday. Loved it!

[Parking]: Difficult parking situation, but I got really lucky and found a street parking spot near the intersection of Cleveland Ave and Richmond St at 9 AM. Apparently visitors can park for free at the DMV parking lot (3960 Normal St), but the lot fills up quickly so come early. According to the website, visitors can also park at the United States Postal Service parking lot at 3911 Cleveland Ave. [Amenities & vendors]: The farmers market does not accept EBT. The market takes up about three large blocks and visitors can find produce, gifts, arts and crafts, flowers, clothing, etc. Not many fruit stands offer samples, but other non-fruit food vendors do provide free samples. The market also has a solid food court including one vendor selling coconut pancakes (Coconut & Co. Thai Fusion). The coconut pancakes (aka khanom krok - $4 for 8 pieces) reminded me of the sticky rice from mango sticky rice and these pancakes were actually quite good. [Conclusion]: Our party only ended up staying for 30 minutes, but overall this is a great farmers market for anyone who's looking for solid one-stop food options and not necessarily looking for a produce-focused farmers market.

But pasture raised + fresh farm eggs; Hens that roam freely and forage, even better quality! Did you know... fresh farm eggs can sit on the counter (unrefrigerated) for up to 14 days IF the eggs have yet been refrigerated. And they are SO good. Obviously, refrigerate if they won't be consumed within the 14 days but once refrigerated they must stay refrigerated . When buying at the booth, they have not been refrigerated. Current price: $8 for 1 dozen. Expensive but quality and freshness is priceless. If you haven't had fresh farm eggs or don't know the difference, you need to refine that pallet of yours because you are missing out. Fresh as in unwashed!!! I've gone "country" in this beach city! Many times I have considered taking the drive to Ramona to the farms to hunt for some fresh eggs for my baked goods, breakfasts, and my fresh pasta noodle making. Especially when it comes to making my fresh pasta noodles from scratch I want the freshest eggs possible. Well, you don't need to drive to the farms. Their tent is available at some of the farmers markets around the county. If you see their tent, don't pass them up! Well worth $8. Some of the other food vendors at the farmers markets use their eggs as well. I had a "breakfast bowl" and they were frying up fresh eggs from Three Sons Farm. The taste of fresh eggs... I can't find the right words that deserve their compliments. Has a fresh and clean taste to them. The yolk doesn't have a harsh "yolks-ness" taste, it's lighter and creamier - if that makes sense?! The difference is in the yolk. I will take creamier over store bought any day. Ex: I make my own fresh pasta noodles from scratch. That alone, the noodles are already fresh and silky. With fresh eggs... "!!!!!" JABA APPROVED. Until the next review....
