    Wonton ramen
    Tanya Q.

My first time eating Ramen , "What" I hear you say . Well what's good about a bowl of steaming hot noodles ? Uh everything ! I went for the pork won-ton ramen with egg and bamboo and I shared a side of pork gyoza . The gyoza were light and the wrapper wasn't doughy , I really liked these and they're something I always order . The ramen with its soft silky noodles and light soy flavoured broth , not having much ramen experience I felt it could've been a lot more flavourful but it was a substantial portion , although my dining companion says you can get bowls as big as your head . The service was friendly and I remember this place as a previous incarnation as Landreth and Co . So it has courtyard seating out the back . I'm going to give it another go for sure .

Speaking of Japanese Ramen, Takara is the one that you should not neglect. Hidden on buzzing Ponsonby road, this Takara is such a gem. However, you can still see through the ceiling windows telling how lovely and cozy it is. Walk in around 5pm, people already take up all the seats in the first lounge. Oh, too many people to sit down! Just then, waitress came in with a smile. Two people, follow me... Follow you to, where? What a clever thought. They turned out the backside, to be more specific, the conservatory into a second lounge, setting long sharing tables in between and several separated seats. Dressed with a few pots of greens to lighten this area. wow, more secret in a hidden place. In Japan, if sitting in sorts of place like this, you wouldn't let down by the dish, as only the very local restaurants do it this way. So I began to feel confident. The menu is different to the Takara in Browns Bay, I should say, more expensive for Ponsonby people to consume. Daily special dish is a plus to your greedy appetite. But most people come for Ramen, directly. Pork Ramen comes up with nothing wrong. Creamy soup, right amount of salt, half poached egg, pork slice with several veggies especially the bamboo shoots. It is up to the name. However, the fried chicken was a disappointment. It came with a right temperature, good color, crispy skin and tender inside. But, no taste at all. Maybe chef is too busy coping with the dishes and left the salt behind. Fried tofu tastes smooth with the soy sauce dressing. The outside skin still needs a bit of time to become more crusty for the first bite pleasure. Some points finally drove me away from here. Too noise by the noise from people sitting next to you, I do not appreciate people making funny sound eating Ramen, and what is more, being lack of space seemed to push people just finish eating and go. Now, I do miss the coziness of a small Ramen place in Japan. Fewer customers, and you can share some talk with the chef, watching him make you the bowl of noodle. Yes, the lost of humanity in the crowed society could affect greatly.

Delicious food - friendly staff - and a great location. Ramen Takara are a must try for any Japanese enthusiast. We arrived at 12pm and were quickly seated outdoors. We ordered the crispy noodle salad, edamame, pork gyoza, wonton ramen and the chicken karaage. The crispy noodle salad not only looked impressive - but was perfectly seasoned and had amazing texture. Cabbage and carrot slaw, covered in crispy fried ramen. I absolutely LOVED this dish - would come back just for this salad alone. The gyoza were perfectly cooked - crispy on the it outside but not dry at all - the filly was tender and flavoursome. The ramen was very impressive ! Tasty and wholesome broth, half an egg, mushrooms, spring onion, one slice of pork and tender wontons. I requested thick and curly noodles - which were added in perfect proportion to the broth. The karaage wasn't anything to right home about - but it was tender and juicy and served with mayo. Definitely recommend to all ! I will be back soon to try the sweet and sour meatballs.

After walking past this 'well reviewed' restaurant many times - I decided to have a (late) lunch here. I love Japanese fare, so was looking forward to my Teriyaki Chicken for $16. The presentation of all dishes is exquisite; beautifully plated. I choose to take mine away, as I was rushing back to work, however the aroma wafting out of the bag was 'knock-out' heaven in a box. The chicken was tender & delicious over fluffy rice & salad topped with a creamy dressing. There were other temptations on the menu: Wonton Ramen $14, Edamame beans $6, Pork Belly Spring Rolls $10... Yelp!!! I think I may become a regular!

ラーメンを何度も食べたことがあります。I've eaten ramen many times (hard not to, after two years in Japan). I had my first Ramen Takara experience in the Shore. The Ponsonby branch is a bit more trendy and it has a cozy little courtyard, so I prefer the atmosphere here! I ordered a plate of gyoza and a bowl of wonton ramen. The gyoza were oishii (delicious). I enjoyed the fine textured filling and the way it was nicely crisped up on one side. As for the ramen - the wontons were light and tasty; the noodles, nice and springy; and there was a generous helping of chasu, to keep me happy. The all-important shoyu broth however, lacked in flavour. Perhaps I'll try the miso and tan-tan ramen, next...!? じゃあまたね (see you later)

It's not brilliant because I guess you only get that in Japan I suppose but compared to Mentatz (on High Street) and Tanpopo (Anazc Ave) it's good. It's also famously nestled between a few well known Symonds St eateries namely Ginas which is a funny and loud Italian restaurant, a top end Japanese eatery which I can't remember the name of, a well known Sushi eatery and also a cheap and cheerful Thai dining house. So you assume that there's plenty of competition about! First time I rolled in I ordered a Giyoyaki Ramen (fish and pork broth and probably spelt wrong) and it was delicious. The broth is probably the most important part of Ramen and it was rich and creamy. Some may argue otherwise that it's each individual part that gives the rise to the whole Ramen. But I say broth. For me it was a little tad on the small side as I was super hungry but everything is fine, a little short on the extra condiments as I usually like a bit of bamboo shoots. Second time I went I had a spicy ramen. I had a good look at the menu and was pleasantly surprised to discover that you can make it large for an extra $1. So I went with that and it totally filled me up. Go get your Ramen Fix there!

The world according to yelp: 1 STAR=Eek! Methinks not…read more 2 STAR=Meh. I've experienced better. I'm being generous when I award this business 2 stars!!! My personal rating would be 1 star...I will not return. The waitstaff here has zero concept of customer satisfaction or accommodation, or how to promote a positive experience for their diners. The chef prepares a reasonably good quality assortment of food, which garners a food rating of 3 (4 stars tops) stars. Thus, the complete dining experience, which someone seeks when they dine, is relegated the below average of 2 stars (and as I said...I'm being generous). Another couple walked in ahead of us by 10 seconds at 5:35pm. The two couples were waiting to be attended to by the waitstaff member, who was busy making telephone calls to confirm upcoming reservations, and couldn't have the decency to welcome waiting guests. After completing a few more calls, about 5 minutes, he then turned to first address the guests. Not a welcoming intro. Though the restaurant was deserted at opening, we were seated next to the bar, where the barman was busy grinding ice. This barstaff activity persisted for 10 minutes. Normally this sort of prep work is done in advance of opening, so as not to disturb diners. We remarked to the "host/waiter" who greeted and seated us, and he replied "it'll only be another 4, 5 or 6 minutes...thanks for your understanding". We could have walked out with that attitude and what we encountered previously. A long wait before anyone came to our table to take any orders. Finally I got up and went to the barman who had brought beers out to some patio diners and asked him to take our orders. We ordered drinks and our food, and he promptly went back to his bar station and kept grinding more ice. I then got up again and asked him for our drinks. He stopped grinding the ice and only then prepared our beer and wine. The host/waiter brought our food and served up the three sauces into a tray for our table. He squirted a fair amount of the mayonnaise sauce onto the floor. Did he ever clean it up??? NO!!! I had to remark to him about it some 20 minutes later, and he then remedied his own mess. But enough about the lack of service and the inattentiveness to customers. The food.... It was good, but not anything special, or what one wouldn't expect from any decent Japanese restaurant.

As a ramen lover I decided to google around and see if I can find somewhere I haven't tried before, one of the websites called this place one of Auckland's best, and since the other recommendations seemed legit, I thought I'd heck it out. I sat down on benches along the wall that are clearly broken, half of my butt hanging. Deep breaths, we're here for the ramen, I thought to myself. I ordered Genzui Ramen, which is named after the place. The supposed chicken and pork soya broth cafe with an overwhelming seafood smell (and not the good kind, more like age old dead seaweed), BBQ pork is definitely not BBQ pork by any standard, and cut long the grain??? I'm pretty sure its cooking 101 to cut meat across the grain, their meat was extremely hard to chew and impossible to bite. I had to shove a huge piece into my mouth and chew on its rubbery texture. Everything is overwhelmingly salty with a definite lack of flavour. Proper ramen is salty but with strong umami, this... I just cannot handle... Stay far far away from this place if you have any respect for your palette at all.

Don't look for Genzui through the mall (it only goes up to the third floor via escalators). If…read moreyou're in the mall, your best bet is to go find an elevator to get up to the 4th floor. Genzui is actually located inside the Crowne Plaza hotel, so it's way easier to navigate from the hotel instead. There weren't many places open for dinner on a Sunday night, so we found ourselves getting ramen here. The ramen is actually not really ramen, but more like Korean noodles and soup where the noodle is thicker and chewier. We had the miso corn butter ramen and the ramen chicken salad. The ramen chicken salad was kind of watered down in sauce and was 3 small pieces of chicken on a bed of cabbage with an even larger bed of cold noodles. I can see the appeal if you're looking for a cheap eat, since almost all of the dishes were under 10NZD. However, if you're looking for tasty or authentic or fast ramen (surprisingly took 20+ minutes for the food to come out), this is not the place.
