Tonpopo ramen in the front. Super creamy and flavorful. Regular size. In the back is the Size upgrade

Small shop with big flavor. I had the Tanpopo ramen and the broth was really creamy and my boyfriend had the tonkotsu shoyo ramen which he also enjoyed. Generous portion sizes and the prices were fairly cheap. Definitely recommend.

You need to know ramen before you will appreciate Tanpopo. Ramen is not about the toppings, it's not about the serving size, it's not about how good the decor is. Ramen is about the feeling of satisfaction when you slurp up everything in the bowl. And of course the broth itself. Out of all the ramen places that I would frequent. Tanpopo has the best broth, it is a genuine pork bone broth that has been simmering for a very long time. The bone marrows have disintegrated into the soup itself, adds tremendous flavours to the broth. I love my noodles. And tanpopo has one of the best noodles in Auckland. The fact it sells a normal serving size bowl for 11 dollars is beyond comprehension. I on the other hand goes for the 17 dollar big bowl and then super sized for 3 bucks more. Making it a total of 20 dollars. See my photos for a visual size comparison. A friendly tip that the Japanese cha shu or BBQ pork is not the red colour meat you normally see hanging in a Chinese restaurant window. The Japanese version is pale. Because it's rolled up pork belly that's been steamed. So it's not the sweet salty pork that most people are used to. And some might not enjoy the spicy pickled bamboo shoots. Then again, most ethnic restaurants don't apologise to be authentic just because you don't like it. So I feel rather sad when some people reviews the best ramen bar in auckland with anything less than 5 stars. I have been going to tanpopo for a very long time. Actually I still remember that the shop used to be an Internet cafe. But, everytime when I get the craving for some Ramen I d go to tanpopo, if I can find parking near by. I had to circle the block 3 times tonight before I decided to get ripped off by the britomart carpark @ 12 for an hour!

Tanpopo is a decent meal and I was impressed by the selection of ramen choices. Photos look impressive but after tasting it wasn't good enough to rate higher. Noodles were cooked just right and toppings were plentiful. It just lacks a special quality that you can find at places like Ramen Do. You won't leave hungry but if your looking for your new favourite ramen shop, keep walking.

This is tucked away in a bit of a weird neighborhood that's near the scene apartments at the bottom of Anzac street. They make ramen, and you pretty much know what to expect. Their menu doesn't offer much variety, just the usual variations of ingredients. I found it slightly oily. Also everything is over $10 which is expensive for ramen. But still, worth it if you need a ramen fix!

Yet another place we had read good things about so thought we gotta give it a go. Well we would have anyway but sometimes good reviews can give you a nudge in that direction even more so. Firstly strange decor for a Japanese restaurant and even in the toilet ! Hawaiian theme !!! Well guess it is better though than bare bland walls. The menu selection was not as much as we thought would be, thought there would be more choices. Anyway we chose the ramen with pork , pork dumpling and fried rice . Keeping it small and simple. All were tasty enough , but am not going to rave about it. I don't think it deserves it. But on a better note the price is not too bad and the staff do give good service. I thinking for now three stars until I go there and feel something special from both the food and when sitting there. The feel of the place to be honest did not do much for me either......

The miso soup ramen was quite delicious. It has the right quantity of toppings and you can ask for extra spiciness. Love the place

Average at best; they use a lot of salt (more than typical) and noodles are thin and lack texture. I had the tonkutsu chashu, spicy.

The menu consists of all the usual in these sort of Japanese restaurant plus they have monthly specials. The price is pretty good , the place clean and a good thing is you can watch the food being prepared as the kitchen is open. But I find their portions of meat a little less compared to another Japanese restaurant I reviewed but barring that it is equally delicious. Drinks are available as well as help yourself water. No credit card facilities though , only cash or eftpos. It's tucked away in the queen st side of Tyler st and could be easy to walk past if not really looking.

Soy sauce, Miso, Salt and Tonkotsu Ramen, four elementary Ramen but classic to choose. There are more to come if you would like some special treat to your noodle. Quite a Japan Style! Honestly, for this kind of noodle place, always try the basic and best one. Tonkotsu is not a bad choice. Nice soup, slow cooked pork slice, bamboo shoots and fresh spinach for a taste bonus. What's more, you can choose fried dumplings, they call Gyoza and some pork stew for small bites. They are both quite authentic. Just wish they could turn these seats a bit more tidy, then it would be closer to my Ramen Place expectation.

It's not brilliant because I guess you only get that in Japan I suppose but compared to Mentatz (on High Street) and Tanpopo (Anazc Ave) it's good. It's also famously nestled between a few well known Symonds St eateries namely Ginas which is a funny and loud Italian restaurant, a top end Japanese eatery which I can't remember the name of, a well known Sushi eatery and also a cheap and cheerful Thai dining house. So you assume that there's plenty of competition about! First time I rolled in I ordered a Giyoyaki Ramen (fish and pork broth and probably spelt wrong) and it was delicious. The broth is probably the most important part of Ramen and it was rich and creamy. Some may argue otherwise that it's each individual part that gives the rise to the whole Ramen. But I say broth. For me it was a little tad on the small side as I was super hungry but everything is fine, a little short on the extra condiments as I usually like a bit of bamboo shoots. Second time I went I had a spicy ramen. I had a good look at the menu and was pleasantly surprised to discover that you can make it large for an extra $1. So I went with that and it totally filled me up. Go get your Ramen Fix there!

After scanning the broad menu, we ordered up two lunch bento box specials, an eel plate and tonkatsu shoyu ramen bowl. Food arrived mere moments later, seemingly faster than your local Maccas! The lunch special included miso soup, takoyaki, tuna/salmon sashimi salad, chicken teriyaki and a bowl of rice (and some unknown yet tasty chicken cucumber marianated dish). Not a bad deal for $16 NZ. Chicken teriyaki was excellent, btw. The eel arrived in a very generous portion (3x what we'd normally get in the states) and delish! Ramen was perfectly flavored (not too salty) and the noodles were tender. A good lunch stop in the heart of the CBD, and a good value if you're used to paying in USD! A nice refreshing Japanese meal preparing us for our upcoming experience in Japan -- should be ranked higher than the 3.5 stars currently on Yelp!

The entrance is dark so you can't really tell if it's a restaurant. Also, it's definitely hard to tell if it's open or not. There are signs, but it's a bit confusing still. Ha! When you do go inside it, the atmosphere is quiet and calm. It definitely does feel like one of those smaller Japanese restaurants that you have been to if you have ever been to Japan. There's a sushi bar area where you can sit. There's also an authentic Japanese dinning area, set up with the tatami floors, walls, cushions and table where you have to take off your shoes in order to be seated there. There are also western seating available where we sat. The staff are quick to serve and are friendly. The food was delivered fairly quickly, and we didn't wait long.
