I was saving my 300th review for something special. And when I visited Izakaya Kintaro, I decided…read morethat it deserves that designation. This Japanese-owned spot slightly hidden off in a small street right in downtown Auckland is a true gem. Here, you can get a full meal for $14.90 NZD and they have $5 NZD draft Orion beer at all times. The Salmon Sashimi Don (meaning on rice) and the Assorted Sashimi Don was fresh and plentiful, containing way more slices of sashimi than described on the menu. If sashimi isn't for you (but why wouldn't it be?), then there are a variety of other options containing cooked items from $14.90-19.90 NZD as well. Super fresh, cheap, and great service. I would recommend for lunch or dinner anytime in downtown Auckland.

Before we get to the food quality itself, there were two things I found strange in my experience here. Firstly I was dining alone and really wanted Gyoza which comes in servings if 10. I asked if I could have 5 and that wasn't an option according to the chef. Then my food came all at once. I had ordered 2 appetizers and a main meal. So half my food went cold. Finally getting to the actual food the Teriyaki Salmon was fresh, agedashi tofu was certainly different to how it's normally cooked and edamame was fine. I'm general this place has lost its authenticity a bit. But food was OK...

I…read morewas researching 'BYO Japanese' in Newmarket and Bien Izakaya popped up - it sounded great! What I loved about Bien Izakaya was the extensive menu. They had some interesting dishes I had never heard of, for example 'umekurage' (jellyfish marinated plum pulp) and 'ebi toast' (prawn toast). They also offer a lot of different sides, from kimchi and potato croquettes to small salads and pickles. Each dish is labelled clearly on the menu with a picture, so it made ordering easy. From the menu, I ordered the seaweed salad, takoyaki and pork ramen. The food was delicious - I cannot fault it. My other companions ordered the prawn toast, teriyaki chicken, sirloin steak, tempura and the $30 dinner plate, which included a mix of dishes plus dessert. Every dish was presented well, from the sides to the mains. However, the portions were smaller than I would usually get at my local Japanese, but full of flavour nonetheless. What we disliked about Bien Izakaya was the BYO corkage - $10 for the first bottle and $5 for every extra bottle - a bit steep! It worked out to be cheaper to just order a glass of wine off the menu! Another negative was that the service was average. There was only one waitress working and she was very flustered, plus we couldn't understand her when she read out the menu specials. Also, our water glasses were never topped up and it was difficult trying to get her attention - this shouldn't have been a problem because the restaurant is small. Overall, the food was great, but we were not happy with the service or BYO charge. I probably would not re-visit, because there are better value for money Japanese restaurants in the area.

Very impressed by this place…read more We dined here Sunday afternoon. It was a cold dull winters day. They have seating inside but it isn't obvious from outside so don't be put off thinking its only tables outside. We told the waitress we were cold and wanted to sit as far away as possible from the door when people came in. She seated us at the back of the restaurant and even brought a small heater to our table - great service. We ordered Okonomiyaki and Tempura Udon with prawn and also some dumplings. The food was excellent. I don't like my food to arrive tepid and in this case all dishes arrived piping hot which was perfect. The flavours were great and the dumplings were better than another place we sometimes go to that specialise in dumplings! Highly recommend this place.

You should see local people enjoying , and also with people from the origin country. For instance, a Chinese restaurant here should attract both Chinese people and kiwis. But in Nippon, I see most of the guests are kiwi, not from Japan, or even from Asian countries. So here comes the confusion. A Japanese restaurant should be decent, quiet in a certain way, clean, cozy. It should leave some privacy space with the customers, not that loud and full of quirky music that piled up your stomach. Maybe people find it funny to get a drum hit once coming a new customer, however, I don't quite fancy this idea. Then the menu is a bit confusing, seats a bit narrow, the grilled beef tongue is way too salty, Ginger slices of roasted pork is too thick for chewing, and the whole presentation is not Japan delicate. Of all the dishes we ordered, perhaps the roast vegetable is the best. In our mind, Tokyo Bay in Takapuna is really a good example of what a proper Japanese restaurant should be. Sorry Nippon, I just don't feel you are the right cake for me.
