I've lost count of the number of times I've been here - adults only dinner dates, dinner parties, family birthdays, even takeaways. I really can't tell you just how much I love this place and I know I'm not alone. The chefs drum a welcome as you arrive (and leave), and even on busy nights when we haven't booked they will always find us a spot. The restaurant recently expanded to the building next door which is known as Amami Shochu Bar but has the same menu. In the main Sake Nippon bar there is barside seating downstairs where you can watch the chefs do their thing, booths, tables and more tables upstairs plus a group of Japanese style large low tables. While I never done it here myself, you can partake of Karaoke here too if the mood so takes you. Our last visit was for my stepson's birthday and they immediately went off and made a Happy Birthday sign (ok we assume that's what it said) for our table. We were surprised and delighted but had to laugh because it had my husband's name on it. They laughed too, took it away and brought it back with the birthday boy's name on it. A simple thing but now a new family tradition, as are the Bubblegum flavoured sodapops in a glass bottle with a big crazy ball on top that you push down to open. You can take your own wine or order from the more than adequate winelist, or as we do often, have sake or one of the Japanese beers. I'm also personally partial to the Plum Wine (Umeshu) with ice. The menu has all the usual Japanese favourites sushi, sashimi, yakisoba etc, along with teppanyaki, yakitori skewers (get the garlic), and a lot of crazy fish and seafood delicacies that are not really our thing but the chefs seem to produce continuously. Something I suspect does not originate in Japan but that we order religiously is the Deep Fried Camembert which comes with a big dollop of sweet orange marmalade. It's two gooey decadent wedges of 1980s deliciousness. If you don't usually order salad when eating Japanese then try one here - the dressings are incredible, so much so I have had to hunt them down at Japanese specialty stores to use at home. It sounds too good to be true but seriously, EVERYTHING is good here, the prices are cheap and the service always quick, friendly and welcoming. They make Avocado Nigiri for me even though it's not on the menu and we always leave with warm fuzzies. Love you Sake Nippon!!!

I love the atmosphere of this place, I love the seating, I love the room they have upstairs for large groups, I just don't particularly love the food. This is my personal opinion and I know that so many other people just adore Sake Bar, but I just can't work out why I don't like the food. I feel like it has been to westernized, it doesn't have that authentic Japanese flavour that I crave. I come here once a year for a family event, where they just keep bringing us every item of the menu until we are full, so I have tried pretty much all of it. Everything is very heavy, whether its fried or covered in mayo or sauce, which I know the boys in my family love, but I find it doesn't sit very well with me. Even their chicken sushi, which I thought would be a light choice, is covered in teriyaki sauce and mayo. However if you do enjoy food like that, this place is so much fun to come and have dinner or a drink.

Well maintained. Clean. Some street parkings limited to 30 min during the day. The food- menu is smaller than many other westernized Japanese restaurants but they do bring out good daily specials. Amazing quality seafood. If you are lucky, you may get the highest quality part of tuna (otoro) the menu. Has a rich creamy taste to it. Also recommend the tuna wings. Lightly flavored, juicy and tender. Of course the lunch box options are of good quality and value. The service- as expected from a Japanese restaurant. Helpful and knowledgable. Will definitely visit this place again. Look forward to trying out their next special.

The sushi is fantastic and so fresh! Made daily from this little store, they have an enormous selection from chicken, prawn, crab, salmon and many more. They also have hot meals to choose from too. There are only a few tables available outside of the store and a little bar along the window inside, so I would recommend taking your meal away. Every time I have been to this little store it has always been the same lovely man carefully placing my meals into a take away bag. If you're lucky he might even chuck in a rice ball. They also do catering here. For my 18th birthday we organised a few dishes which they presented on big circular plates with soya sauce in the middle. It was fantastic and much loved by everyone!

This is a great way to rid yourself of "last summers" fashion etc, make room for the new, and if these organisations can make a dollar or two from my donation then hoorah for them! On one such excursion I found myself in Onehunga Mall early on a Saturday morning and in dire need of a mocha! I headed to Brick By Brick Cafe, located at the top of the Mall where I knew I could park my car right outside with minimum fuss. Initially I thought the place was closed as at 8.00am the interior was bereft of patronage but as I pressed my nose against the glass door, it opened. I was immediately struck by the most alluring aromas; think freshly baked mouth-watering wares being hauled out of hot ovens by the tray full! Swallowing my drool, I ordered my mocha and pointed to the most delicious looking savoury muffins (still in the baking tray) and asked for one (I had to fight the urge to order all six!) Helping myself to a chilled glass of water, I sat down and began to peruse my surroundings. I've no idea what this building was in its former life but it is a most impressive structure; spacious, cool interiors, large ceiling to floor windows and my seat was a couch, trendy and extremely comfy. My muffin and coffee duly arrived and with the beaming smile from the waiting-person, I was left feeling most welcome and quite at home! The coffee, muffin and chilled water were all superb and the cheerful farewell on my departure, more than warranted the $5 tip I left on the table. My only regret: I didn't order the other 5 muffins. Maybe on my next visit!

They serve predominantly Japanese food, but also have a Korean menu as well. I have tried nearly everything off the menu, but below are a few of my favourites: - Takoyaki (Octopus Balls) - I have eaten these in many Japanese restaurants around Auckland and I still believe Toshi does the best ones and for the best price! - Yako Gyoza (Deep Fried Dumplings) - Very good! - Teriyaki Chicken or Fish Bento Box - both very tasty and filling! - Bibimbap - Korean mixed rice with meat and assorted vegetables. Highly recommend! - Teriyaki Chicken (served with rice, miso, salad) - one of my favourite dishes! They also sell tuna nigiri, which is pretty rare, but unfortunately the pieces that I had didn't taste all that fresh to be honest. The salmon nigiri and sashimi is beautiful though.
