The menu in the glass case out front did not list Pad Thai - which I was craving - but I was sold once we peeked inside and asked if they had it and we're told yes. It didn't hurt that he place was packed. That was a good sign and we were off to a good start. The inside was very lovely and we were fine with eating at the bar, but they were able to squeeze us into a 2-top in the dining room. We shared the pad thai and got some sides to split. Man! When they say "sticky rice", they mean it! Not that that's a bad thing. I smothered it in peanut sauce and wa a happy camper. The cocktails are a little on the spendy side, but then, they are spendy anywhere compared to back in the USA. We got very good service and would return over and over again - if we lived there. Alas, the locals get to enjoy this gem and we just get to have found memories from 6,889 miles away. read more

I love Thai food, and this place is pretty decent at cooking it (well they should be because it's a Thai restaurant). I thought that the service here was rather average though, and this restaurant does get very busy. Usually booking is essential. When we turned up (with a reservation) our table wasn't ready, and we had to wait at the bar for about 30 minutes, which wasn't all bad because the bar was nice and they have a good selection of drinks. Still it was very unprofessional I thought. The building and interior of the restaurant itself is nothing amazing, and looks a little tired. But I can't complain too much because at the end of the night I had decent Thai food in my belly. The price is quite steep though; pretty glad I didn't have to pick up the bill. read more

The best Thai in Auckland so far! Satay Chicken skewers 9/10! Crunchy peanut sauce with 4 large serves. BBQ pork ribs were also very good 8/10 and a very large serving. Came on a hot plate with crunchy veg. Great range of dishes which i can't wait to return to! This is my go-to Thai restaurant in Auckland. Fresh, authentic ingredients. Pleasant classic Thai atmosphere, windows overlooking Albert Street . Spacious interior with seating for up to 160. Friendly and prompt attention. Most if not all of the staff is Thai. Note, restaurant is on upper level of heritage building, no elevator. I especially like the curries, beef salad, and chicken satay appetizer. Nice soups too. Highly recommend! Central Auckland location. Also does carry out. read more

Great dinner. This place was walking distance from our hotel with good reviews, so we decided to give it a try. Large selection on their wine list and we had a tasty local Cabernet Sauvignon. We all enjoyed this... The food was hot, well prepared and tastes great. The next day we all paid for it, but it was worth it. From the outside, this place doesn't look like much, and to be honest, inside is pretty dated, but the service was outstanding, and the food was pretty darned good. Walked in off street on a Wednesday night without a reservation. Ordered the Drunken Noodles with Chicken. They were marked as two chili hot and were fairly spicy. The dish was good and well proportioned. Service was great and fast. read more

I made a reservation for this place for a group of about 10 of us for 8pm one Saturday night. We turned up at that time but they couldn't seat us. We were left awkardly standing by the bar for sometime before we finally got seated at about 8:30. Our food took sometime to arrive - it was after 9 before we got our meals and we were pretty hungry! I would have thought we would have at least been able to get our starters pretty promptly. We mentioned to staff we were a bit annoyed with the wait time, first for our table (when we had booked) and then for our food. Their decision was to waive the corkage for our BYO wine. In their defence, once our food did arrive it was really great, tasty food. It was just a bit of a shame that our initial experience wasn't so perfect. To close on a positive side note, the restaurant had some unique and pretty decorations. read more

Tonight, after a long day of touring Auckland my husband and I decided we wanted Thai for dinner, found Mai Thai on yelp and decided to give it a try. We got there, the place was half empty and they took one look at us and suddenly they had no open tables. I pointed to a couple of small tables that would do, but they said no, we could only sit at the bar. We almost left, but we were exhausted and hungry we decided to stay, at which point a table miraculously appeared. When they finally brought us water and took our order we were hopeful, we ordered pad thai, something simple and quick. We were pretty disappointed. The sauce tasted like ketchup, and the consistency was off. The only upside I noticed from this place is they allow you to bring your own wine. read more

We stumbled into this gem while walking around looking for a place to dine for dinner. What caught my eye was their extensive menu and Trip Advisor badge. This place is really good and the service is amazing. We had the green curry and the spare ribs dinner along with the mango with sweet rice and ice cream with black rice desserts and it was all great. The place is large and very clean. I would go back and I highly recommend. read more

Went last night to celebrate my birthday with a group of girls, DISGUSTING service. Disappointing experiences. Will NEVER return here again. It doesn't matter how good the food is when the service is that bad. One of my friends wanted to skip the main and just order dessert and the waitress was very rude and said, she needed to order a main, everybody in the table should do it!! After a talked to her she asked me my credit card to secure the payment. Super rude. We wanted more water and the waitress was all the time away, 1little jar for 10 people. Payment also a problem, we tried to use the entertainment book voucher and the woman ask for just one payment. read more

Very disappointing. Went in with a group of 22 for a friend's birthday and received the most appalling service. Since there were too many of us to order off the full menu, we were told they had already arranged some set dishes for us to share. My friend who organised the booking clearly stated that some of us were vegetarian and wanted to know what these dishes were going to be. The waiter seemed to just brush off the comment and walked away leaving us confused as to whether he understood or not. Shortly after, a waitress arrived with plates, my friend who I was sitting next to me asked if there were making any vegetarian dishes, the waitress seemed very confused by the question and said "I don't know", I then asked for her to find out, she seemed very startled by these questions and said "excuse me" then walked away. So the dishes came and all had meat in them. Not only that, there was such a small amount of food! Literally a small bowl each. Some of the more picky eaters didn't like any of it and didn't eat also my vegetarian friends had to pick out the vegetables from the bottom of the plates (the few bites I had of the food I admit was quite nice). So the bill came to $38 per person which I and a few others tried to complain it really wasn't worth. We also pointed out how there were no vegetarian dishes and that we were never told what the food was going to be. The waiter (same waiter from the beginning) claimed he was never told and kept making up excuses. I've work in a range of restaurants and cafes before, and that was an awful way to handle unhappy customers. So wouldn't recommend, especially if you're going with a large group. read more

Not sure why the ratings are so low. I have been to Thailand on numerous occasions and this place is authentic even down to the staff. the food is great. I had no problems at all with this place and have been there on at least three occasions and will continue to go back when next in Auckland. read more

A very nice restaurant serving excellent Thai cuisine. The Staff was attentive and helpful, the Table was laid with Linen and nice utensils, and the restaurant accommodates easy conversation. It requires climbing two sets of stairs, so if one has difficulty with this, you should know. A nice Bar is in one room and there are two Dining Areas, one very large, the other less so. They also have an outside area for Al Fresco dining when the weather is conducive. We recommend this and will return should we find ourselves again in Auckland. read more

My husband and I stumbled into this gem of a Thai restaurant while on our honeymoon and absolutely LOVED our meals. So much that we had to come back on our way back though Auckland later on in our trip. The spring rolls are perfectly cooked - crispy but not too greasy. The meals were flavorful and well balanced. I'm a spice-head and they managed to find the perfect level of hot but cooked in a way where it doesn't just taste like chilies. If I were going on curbside appeal alone I might have skipped it from the street level entrance but found the restaurant to be nicely decorated and clean. It's shockingly large, it just keeps sprawling beyond where you think the end of the restaurant is. Bathrooms were clean and nicely updated too. We keep joking about hopping a flight to Auckland to go back for dinner but I think we're both not really joking ... I have a feeling that we'll make our way back to Mai Thai sooner than later. :) read more
