The food was ok, not great. However the one star is for customer experience. Even though the place is small and casual, they don't have enough staff, so the service is slow. Since the first interaction the staff made us feel uncomfortable and that it was a huge inconvenience letting our 4 year old daughter eat a piece of chicken in their establishment that they didn't sell to us while we eat the two noodles we ordered. Things got worse as the staff became rude when we asked for a small empty bowl to share noodles with our toddler. Staff was beyond unprofessional, laughing at our concerns and manager was far from apologetic for the poor customer service and seem inadequate for handling this situation. As a world traveler and foodie this was by far one of the worst experience I had in a restaurant. We come from California, which is very far away and we are visiting Auckland for only a couple days so we are only having 3-4 restaurant picks to enjoy Auckland's culinary experience and to think we spend our money and precious limited time vacation being mistreated by the staff in this place, it is demoralizing. However, I am hopeful that this review may help you save you from a bad experience especially if you have limited time in the city. There are many other options, I would stay away from this one.

A welcome addition to P.Central, Mark Wallbank and Che Barrington (Moo Chow Chow, The Blue Breeze Inn) have done it again. Whisky, noodles, country music, an open kitchen and waiters donning cowboy hats...seriously, what's not to like! Yes, it's expensive for Ramen ($18) but it's worth every mouthful, served in big boy bowls with generous amounts of melt-in-your-mouth meat, noodles cooked al dente and a perfectly salty, meaty broth. Oh and don't forget to stir in their secret spice and vibrant chilli sauce before chowing down. Already a massive hit, I predict this will become my go-to lunch spot in Ponsonby! Note: keep in mind, the only seating option is high stools on communal tables so perhaps not suitable for all occasions.

If you're wanting a good ramen noodle dish this is the place to go. This is our go to place when we're wanting a excellent noodle dish! My husband is from Hawaii so he is always craving saimin dishes which are similar to noodle dishes! This hits the spot. Our favourite dish is the pork ramen - Tasty broth, yummy boiled egg, generous pork belly, herbs & good serving of an Asian mushroom. Great dish! It is a cute little eatery in a hip Ponsonby marketplace where you are able to watch the chef cook your ramen dishes as you sip on your chosen drink. They make the best lemongrass tea with real lemongrass & generous herbs! The best herbal tea I have ever tasted! And it's great for you. If you're into herbal teas you can't visit this place without trying the lemongrass ginger tea! I rated this a 4 star because it is a regular place we visit & is the go to place when we are craving noodles. Lovely decor restaurant with an interactive dining experience.

I really enjoyed the noodle here, stumbled upon this place when I was walking around the street food area and decided to chose this spot over burger burger cause there was no wait and I love noodles. I have to admit this place is pretty good! It is on the pricier side for a noodle in my opinion but it was really good noodle that I wouldn't mind paying it again. Their soup base was good and the rye noodle was delicious. I didn't really like their beef however because it was really fatty. The service was friendly and the food was good. If you are in the area I would definitely recommend stopping by, the have a huge variety of cocktails as well but I decided to pass on it because I had a long walk home ahead of me.

Wow I have really been looking forward to a new Ramen joint to open and Ponsonby Central is such a great location. The atmosphere is spot on, the theme is sort of Asian Western inspired - Whiskey and noodle dishes to a western/country beat. It's really tiny and be aware the seating is not that comfy but the food comes out super quick so you shouldn't need to be there long! For the Ramen i'd expect a bit more flavour - the noodles and pork are perfect and I like the secret spice condiments (the more condiments the better) but the broth itself lacks the deep richness i've had elsewhere. I'd like to see some fresher options for sides/starters.

    Sooooo good!

Nothing not to love. Crowded, cosy, watch your food being cooked, thank the cook, enjoy a single malt, have a laugh with the staff, wish you could eat like a Sumo because it all looks so good.

Just a lovely spot for a lunch or more. Noodle and buns with Asian inspiration. Pork Ramen, 12-hour braised brisket Ramen and even the Barley Veggie Ramen is worth trying. However, if you prefer Japanese style Ramen, with rich soup and beautiful flavor, pork beef more tender texture, Chop chop noodle is a bit different. But it is still favorable, young and fun! Don't miss the Korean style fried chicken, crispy skin and tender inside with a little bit of spicy and creamy sauce, it turns out perfect. It reminds me of Noodle Bar in "Beijing 1949". (If you have a chance travelling in Beijing, you can try there)

YUM!!! Loved this place and will be making it my regular. This busy restaurant seems to be always full and I now understand why. There are long sharing tables and bar seats and albeit quite tight they manage to fit in most walk ins. The highlight for me was definitely the korean fried chicken and the soft shell crab bun. The ramen was good but I wouldn't run around the room shouting hallelujah about it. The egg net of minced prawn and the southern style chicken was also delicious. Great place to share a few dishes - that way you can try it all ! You can't book but there are lots of bars to have a drink while you wait (IF you have to wait). Great prices for excellent food and service...tick tick tick.

Nice little ramen shop. Super friendly staff and nice atmosphere. I enjoyed my time. The ramen broth was average and overall the Miso Ramen dish I had was OK. I wish it was better but average for the food all around. Fine for a quick pitstop, not my place for a special night out.

Chop chop didn't impress me that much, but only for the reason I didn't enjoy the cuisine so this review may not be too accurate (that's my disclaimer) I came here for a quick bite on a Tuesday night. The atmosphere was good it was about half full which was enough for me to think it looked good. We had pork buns and the fried chicken I wasn't a major fan of the fried chick as I don't like too much fat/skin and it was quite fatty (Mexico's fried chicken is better or Yuzu). The waiter recommend the brisket so maybe that would have been a better option. The service was good overall and the waiters were all hot/foreign which was a bonus but besides that I probably wouldn't go again - I would recommend it to people who like trendy Asian infusion restaurants but this is not really for me.

    Couldn't eat the baby octopus!

I thought this place was great, can recommend the courgette salad with crispy pork, squid and caramel miso and the Korean fried chicken (this one's got some heat). Try a cocktail or two (they're almost like smoothies)... the Drunken Master with pear, pineapple juice, creme de bananas and vodka is everything it promises. This is affordable but good dining in Ponsonby Central.

It's not brilliant because I guess you only get that in Japan I suppose but compared to Mentatz (on High Street) and Tanpopo (Anazc Ave) it's good. It's also famously nestled between a few well known Symonds St eateries namely Ginas which is a funny and loud Italian restaurant, a top end Japanese eatery which I can't remember the name of, a well known Sushi eatery and also a cheap and cheerful Thai dining house. So you assume that there's plenty of competition about! First time I rolled in I ordered a Giyoyaki Ramen (fish and pork broth and probably spelt wrong) and it was delicious. The broth is probably the most important part of Ramen and it was rich and creamy. Some may argue otherwise that it's each individual part that gives the rise to the whole Ramen. But I say broth. For me it was a little tad on the small side as I was super hungry but everything is fine, a little short on the extra condiments as I usually like a bit of bamboo shoots. Second time I went I had a spicy ramen. I had a good look at the menu and was pleasantly surprised to discover that you can make it large for an extra $1. So I went with that and it totally filled me up. Go get your Ramen Fix there!

My partner, myself, and our two friends made four people. We were given a booth in the enclosed backyard-style area, which was really cute, but the booths were SO FREAKING SMALL. I'm a small person, and my friends aren't exceptionally large. We were all squished into this booth, but it didn't seem like there were any larger tables there, so we didn't ask for anything bigger. Instead we just played footsies and tried to adjust our knees to not jam into each other. We ordered some ramen (I got the vegetarian ramen which the server said he "thinks" is vegan ) and my friends ordered a variety of seafood/ chicken ramen. My ramen came and had a really buttery taste (?!) which I'm hoping was just a ton of oil. It was alright, but I didn't finish it and I wouldn't order it again. One of my friends just didn't like his at all - he had a few bites and just gave up. My boyfriend ate all of his but we both agreed after that we wouldn't go back. I was sad about that as I had heard about this place and really wanted to like it. If you are looking for ramen in Auckland, just head to Zool Zool in Mt Eden - it's the best by far!

As far as I can tell, the menu is pretty much same - big bowls of steaming hot, freshly made noodles in flavoursome broth with plenty of sides/additions. There's other dishes too but it would be criminal not to try a variation of their namesake dish on your first visit. I was recommended the miso ramen on my first visit to their new location so went with that. It was a-ok - the noodles were al dente and the broth, punchy but it didn't knock my socks off. I think in part it was my fault as I rushed my order and didn't get in on the condiment action. I think next time I'll stick with my usual Brown's Bay order of tonkatsu. Other than that wins all round. The space is small but they've utilized it well with a full covered courtyard outback with heaters so that it's even bearable in winter. The service is a little inexperience but friendly. We were asked about 5 times by two different waitresses if we were ready to order late on a Sat arvo when the joint was pretty empty. All in all a great place for a cheap(ish) dinner out with friends in central Ponsonby!

My personal rating would be 1 star...I will not return. The waitstaff here has zero concept of customer satisfaction or accommodation, or how to promote a positive experience for their diners. The chef prepares a reasonably good quality assortment of food, which garners a food rating of 3 (4 stars tops) stars. Thus, the complete dining experience, which someone seeks when they dine, is relegated the below average of 2 stars (and as I said...I'm being generous). Another couple walked in ahead of us by 10 seconds at 5:35pm. The two couples were waiting to be attended to by the waitstaff member, who was busy making telephone calls to confirm upcoming reservations, and couldn't have the decency to welcome waiting guests. After completing a few more calls, about 5 minutes, he then turned to first address the guests. Not a welcoming intro. Though the restaurant was deserted at opening, we were seated next to the bar, where the barman was busy grinding ice. This barstaff activity persisted for 10 minutes. Normally this sort of prep work is done in advance of opening, so as not to disturb diners. We remarked to the "host/waiter" who greeted and seated us, and he replied "it'll only be another 4, 5 or 6 minutes...thanks for your understanding". We could have walked out with that attitude and what we encountered previously. A long wait before anyone came to our table to take any orders. Finally I got up and went to the barman who had brought beers out to some patio diners and asked him to take our orders. We ordered drinks and our food, and he promptly went back to his bar station and kept grinding more ice. I then got up again and asked him for our drinks. He stopped grinding the ice and only then prepared our beer and wine. The host/waiter brought our food and served up the three sauces into a tray for our table. He squirted a fair amount of the mayonnaise sauce onto the floor. Did he ever clean it up??? NO!!! I had to remark to him about it some 20 minutes later, and he then remedied his own mess. But enough about the lack of service and the inattentiveness to customers. The food.... It was good, but not anything special, or what one wouldn't expect from any decent Japanese restaurant.

As a ramen lover I decided to google around and see if I can find somewhere I haven't tried before, one of the websites called this place one of Auckland's best, and since the other recommendations seemed legit, I thought I'd heck it out. I sat down on benches along the wall that are clearly broken, half of my butt hanging. Deep breaths, we're here for the ramen, I thought to myself. I ordered Genzui Ramen, which is named after the place. The supposed chicken and pork soya broth cafe with an overwhelming seafood smell (and not the good kind, more like age old dead seaweed), BBQ pork is definitely not BBQ pork by any standard, and cut long the grain??? I'm pretty sure its cooking 101 to cut meat across the grain, their meat was extremely hard to chew and impossible to bite. I had to shove a huge piece into my mouth and chew on its rubbery texture. Everything is overwhelmingly salty with a definite lack of flavour. Proper ramen is salty but with strong umami, this... I just cannot handle... Stay far far away from this place if you have any respect for your palette at all.

Genzui is actually located inside the Crowne Plaza hotel, so it's way easier to navigate from the hotel instead. There weren't many places open for dinner on a Sunday night, so we found ourselves getting ramen here. The ramen is actually not really ramen, but more like Korean noodles and soup where the noodle is thicker and chewier. We had the miso corn butter ramen and the ramen chicken salad. The ramen chicken salad was kind of watered down in sauce and was 3 small pieces of chicken on a bed of cabbage with an even larger bed of cold noodles. I can see the appeal if you're looking for a cheap eat, since almost all of the dishes were under 10NZD. However, if you're looking for tasty or authentic or fast ramen (surprisingly took 20+ minutes for the food to come out), this is not the place.
