I didn't expect a little ramen shop in tiny Oxford to be anything special so I was extra delighted to discover how excellent the food is at Ramen Hachi. They've really set the bar for me actually. Wonderful and authentic ramen! I lived in Japan for several years and have been searching for an authentic ramen place since coming back to the states. I finally found it! Really great food, if you are not a vegetarian. You really have limited options on the menu if you can't eat meat. Years ago we went and the chef that was working that day made us a spicy vegetarian broth and we loved it- it was amazing. But if that chef isn't working that day, then expect to have a cold flavorless broth (I'm not sure of what). I wish they'd make that an option because I would have loved to go more. I had really high hope for this place based on all the five stars review. But I was thoroughly disappointed by the broth, which tastes just like the instant ramen I grew up with. It is definitely not bone broth that they cook for hours, which is the whole point of tonkotsu. It tastes artificial. The noodle and toppings are tasty. I just wish they have fresh tasting broth. Dropped by the place for lunch and had no wait (also came during the January term when there are not as many students in the area). My friends ordered the gyoza and edamame to start and seemed to enjoy them especially their kids. Overall, it's pretty solid ramen spot. I ordered the Miso hungry ramen, $14, nice and flavorful, and had enough to take home for lunch again the next day. I was not used to have a huge slab of pork belly like they serve here, it was good, would've rather it cut up a bit, and maybe a few other ingredients in the soup. My friend got the black garlic ramen, and this was yummy as well. One of us was also able to order half spicy/half not spicy and really enjoyed the levels of spice in her ramen with that. If you like it spicy, get the Mi-so-hot - you will not be disappointed. Visited after a hockey tournament at the University. We had a fantastic experience and my 13 year old was upset I didn't let him order a second helping of dumplings. Ramen Hachi is my favorite restaurant to eat at when I'm in Oxford! I discovered this little ramen shop just recently and have been back many times because of their great food/service. Their food is made with authentic Japanese ingredients that are imported to the restaurant. The food carefully made to perfection every time even when they are a little busy. They also have some cool authentic Japanese drinks imported to the shop as well. I always get the melon soda, edamame or gyoza (depending on the day), and the mi-so hot ramen bowl. The staff are also really helpful and attentive at the shop as well. I plan on coming back for more on my next business trip and trying some new menu items. read more
