Delicious takeout Chinese! I ordered on their website and it was ready relatively quickly, compared to how much food I had ordered

Rainbow Chinese was recommended to me by friends I was hanging out with close to the area. I decided to drive out 15 minutes out of my way to go to the restaurant based on their recommendation. I was sorely disappointed in my meal. They were very crowded on a early Saturday evening. I recommend allotting extra wait time whether you're dining in or carrying out. Judging the crowd size I was really excited, anticipating delicious food. However, my food was not great at all. It was subpar as a matter of fact. I ordered a honey chicken combination plate. The egg roll was the only thing that I could see going back for. It had lots cabbage and was very crispy, but lacked any seasoning. Salt made it better. The fried rice was bland there was nothing in it, but just a few bits of chicken. Not even enough chicken, where you could call it chicken fried rice. It seemed as if a few pieces of chicken just happen to have fallen over into the rice. There were no sprouts or egg or onion as with usual Chinese restaurants. The honey chicken entree was disappointing. The chicken was very tough and was not fried to golden brown, it was beige and pasty. The lemon sauce had a strong lemony taste, but yet wasn't flavorful. Nothing I had was seasoned or even salted. Perhaps the food lacks seasoning due to their clientele. I did appreciate the customer service. One woman was cashing out customers while also taking phone orders--and did an outstanding job, getting people in and out. I paid eighteen dollar for what I thought would be dinner and also lunch the next day if I liked the food. There was enough for 3. Parking is a shared lot. read more

I visited Rainbow Restaurant for the first time after the original restaurant I wanted to go to was closed. My daughter and I split the beef broccoli, and each got a wonton soup and vegetable egg roll. The wonton soup was very flavorful, the wontons soft and generously filled, and the crackers crispy and fresh. The egg roll unfortunately was very oily, but the beef broccoli made up for it. The portion was definitely big enough to split with leftovers and for the entire meal, including a pop we only paid $25.00 before tip. I felt the service was very underwhelming, but the restaurant itself was very clean with lots of seating. read more

This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area. A totally enjoyable experience! The service is top notch! They have been in business for a long time and with good reason. They provide great food, reasonable prices, nice atmosphere, nice people and did I say, fantastic food? That deserves emphasizing! Solid selection of traditional Chinese dishes! We often get carry out but tonight we dined in, the service was good, the staff was friendly and the food had great flavor! I go here a lot. Honestly, the food is just okay most of the time, other times, disappointing. It's crowded when I go most of the time and the guy cashing out customers is a little impatient. I usually get General Tso's chicken and shrimp fried rice. The chicken is often over cooked and sometimes tough. The rice has no sprouts or onions or chives and lacks flavor. If you enjoy good traditional Chinese American food, then this is the right place for you. The food is fresh and tasty. The portions are extremely generous so expect to take home a doggy bag. The couple behind us split a meal, which in hindsight, we should have done. We ordered 2 dishes that could have fed 4 people easily. The restaurant does a lot of carry out business as you can see from the photo. We arrived at 5 pm when there only a few people seated at tables. By the time we left, the place was filling up. Not sure where to begin. Long, long time customer and for the last few years I've noticed the quality not quantity of the food has gone down. When the family was more involved with the restaurant, the food was better. It just was. Nothing has the same freshness and well cooked taste it used to have. It is just different. People will say the portions are large- they are but not good. This makes me sad because I used to really like it. Something is just off. The food lacks the flavor it used to. Food is mediocre. Not sure why so many great reviews. My guess is many people in America have yet to travel abroad and see how delicious the foods are when they are made authentically. It's sad to me that "we" settle for mediocre: too much sauce, sodium, MSG, old stale veggies, flavorless food... sold with lots of rice to stuff our bellies. I have yet to find a great Chinese Restaurant in the Detroit Metro Area. I've ordered from this place twice now. The first time was sweet and sour chicken, the second was almond chicken. Both times the chicken was over cooked. I didn't like their sweet and sour sauce, which is why I tried the almond chicken on the second visit. Since moving to West Bloomfield, I've been looking for a good, old-fashioned Cantonese restaurant. I'd passed the old location on Orchard Lake, but I didn't realize that that's what it was; the sign made it look like a party store or something like that. I'd also read reviews on Yelp and that's when I connected the two. Last night, my sister and I decided to try it. We were not disappointed. As others have said, it's tucked in the corner of an odd little strip mall that has 3 other restaurants as well as this one, a Great Clips and Ollie's. It really doesn't look like much, but man, the food is good. Our first indication that we were in the right place was the wonton soup. The broth was full of chicken flavor, not the watery broth that you usually get. The egg rolls were good, nicely crisp, and you could see the bits of shrimp and chicken. I had almond boneless chicken. There was an enormous amount of chicken, and a nice ball of perfect fried rice -- not the kind that's greasy. And they were smart and put the the gravy on the side so the chicken didn't get soggy. My sister had chicken subgum. She said it was really good, and the celery was particularly fresh and tasty. The portions are huge, and once we had the egg rolls & soup, we were pretty satisfied, so we asked for boxes. Well, the server boxed everything for us! I haven't had that happen in a long time. And she even put my sauce in a separate container. Even the packaged fortune cookies were good -- very fresh and crispy, not the least bit soggy. Excellent, excellent, excellent. This is our first trip to this clean, and authenticate restaurant. I enjoyed the General Tso chicken . It was served with chicken rice and wanton soup. My wife tried the orange chicken with whit steamed rice. It too was served with won ton soup and noodles! We could only eat 1/2 of our lunch serving but ordered a Thai rice to go with a few more delicious egg rolls to go as we have a dinner plan in motion. It is with a broken heart that I leave this review!! I have ate here several times in the past and always had very good quality (which is why I don't mind the prices) but I feel like the "quantity vs quality" problem has caught up with them. Total was just about $60. Ordered 2 sweet and sour chickens, 1 orange chicken, 1 steamed dumpling and 1 pint of Chop Suey "hot" with a "extra spicy" note. 1. The sweet and sour chicken bites were soft and some undercooked. Some of the chicken was grizzled which is an instant stop for my kids and I. 2. The orange chicken was good 3. The steamed dumplings were not edible. They were mush and smelled very funny. We have had them several times from here and they were so so bad. 4. The chop suey had zero spice and the sauce was on mostly on the outside of the bag. Very little vegetables and no flavor. Super disappointing to spend $60 and then have to try and feed the kids something else when they really wanted Rainbow. I won't chance it again! read more

Went here for the lunch special which was $11.95. That included choice of soup, entree, fried rice, and an egg roll. I had the hot and sour soup and orange chicken which were both great choices. I decided to order a combo tonight, but was disappointed! The Egg roll was much smaller and very greasy. The Chicken Egg Foo Yung patties were much smaller and lacking the wonderful gravy! Our first time back today, and I wasn't as impressed with the food this time! They were very fast, and I love the online ordering feature. We essentially repeated our order because it was so good last time! But, unfortunately we didn't have the same experience. Still insane portions, tasty rice, and this time the were so incredibly fast! The sweet and sour chicken was great! My husband was really impressed and loved it. I got the sesame chicken and it was a little dry this time. It didn't have the same tasty crisp texture of the first go but the flavor was still good. Once again, INSANE value. I tried the spring roll and loved it! Crab Rangoon was amazing. They're still HUGE and so tasty! The hot and sour soup was the big disappointment this time. Even just from looking at it you could tell the pepper content was high. Once tasting it the pepper (literally ground pepper) taste was so overpowering it was inedible. It wasn't spicy, just tasted like taking a bite of ground pepper. It was so disappointing since it was SO good when we got it last! Came in with my mother who had a friend that was raving about this place. Not gonna lie, this place did not disappoint! I do not think I have ever really had Chinese food so fresh like this before in my life? ‍ The pork was so delectable in the fried rice! Freshly par steamed or shall I say blanched broccoli in with the general tso chicken that had a decent kick to it too! The egg roll seemed very freshly made and fried as well! We live within walking distance so we've frequented this restaurant for carry out services regularly. The food is HIGHLY INCONSISTENT ; we get chicken fried rice, sweet and sour chicken and vegetable egg rolls. As others have said, the staff is not very friendly. You almost feel like a burden when you arrive to pick up your food. The chicken in the chicken fried rice is generally INEDIBLE; dry and tough so we pick around it. Sometimes the FLAVOR is good, sometimes over-powered by onion and sometimes needs to be doused in soy sauce to have any flavor. The chicken from the sweet and sour VARIES as well; sometimes good and other times tough and inedible. The sauce is pretty consistent. The kicker this time was PULLING A PIECE OF METAL OUT OF MY MOUTH after biting into a vegetable egg roll. Now I'm DONE with giving chances. If you've never been to Rainbow Restaurant it's typical Chinese (American) food. Today I'm also including info about their take out, since I'm doing more of that lately. It's a small restaurant if you want to dine in as we've done many times. Excellent service! For takeout I called it in first. You can also order takeout at the counter. Guessing a 20-30 minute wait from what I hear when I get my stuff. Call answered immediately. I was asked to hold and then put on hold. I'm not a fan of this but it seems to be a trend. Anyway, the call was picked up again less than a minute later. I gave my order and was told it would be 20 minutes. We ordered a quart of hot and sour soup, crab rangoons x 2, general Taos chicken and broccoli beef. The meat in both dishes was tender and the vegetables el dante - not mushy. The rangoons were filled very well. I do not like it when there is a tiny bit of filling and mostly dough. Yum! Their rangoons are great. The hot and sour soup was just right. If asked we usually order medium spicy. Came in about 19 minutes later and it was ready. The soup container was in a stapled paper bag and the other dishes were in a plastic bag but in recyclable food containers. I liked that their estimated time was accurate and that everything was packaged very well. Nobody wants soup spilled in the car. Leftovers welcome! read more

It hit a lot of right buttons! Sesame Chicken: really nice sauce on this, with a touch of vinegar so it wasn't too sweet. Chicken was tender and well- prepared. I liked it that it came with a little broccoli on the combo. Egg Roll - Nice crunch & flavor with a good amount of meat inside. Chicken Fried Rice - They nailed this. Texture was perfect. Flavorful and the chicken chunks were a nice touch. Came with combo. Egg Drop Soup - Tasty. Maybe a little heavy on the thickener? Still very good. Lo Mein Combo - Made with the thin noodles. It was a good dish with nice ratios and a generous amount of sauce. The only thing was, it didn't taste like lo mein we've had other places. It tasted like a noodle dish is a good brown sauce. We liked it all a lot, and also received good service inside. They rang the check right at the table! The leftovers were devoured by the family, and we planned to come back, so it's a win. read more

I eat here when I in the area because the food is always very good! The prices are fair, portions large and service is always spot on. There are over 7 restaurants near my home yet I will drive the 20 minutes to Rainbow because it's good and very consistent. It seems the owners are always working there and care very much about the food, service and cleanliness. I never get carry out as I live too far away. Every time I dine there I am impressed with the volume of carry out they do. Why because they do things right and you will not be sorry to dine at Rainbow!!
