I really like the food and it is one of my favorite Chinese Restaurants. They get you in and out.

I eat here when I in the area because the food is always very good! The prices are fair, portions large and service is always spot on. There are over 7 restaurants near my home yet I will drive the 20 minutes to Rainbow because it's good and very consistent. It seems the owners are always working there and care very much about the food, service and cleanliness. I never get carry out as I live too far away. Every time I dine there I am impressed with the volume of carry out they do. Why because they do things right and you will not be sorry to dine at Rainbow!! I though I give this place a try for lunch and was craving some noodles. It appeared busy when I walked in but service was great hence the two stars. The food especially my noodle dish was a disappointment. It wasn't appealing to even look at. It just looked like a glob of food on a plate. I ordered shrimp lo mein, the crab Rangoon also one of the worse I have ever had all I could taste was cream cheese and salt. Rainbow Chinese Restaurant is my go to Chinese restaurant when I return from DTW AIRPORT. I live in Troy, quite a ways from Farmington Hills, and I almost always stop here for a good GOURMET Chinese dinner on the way home. I'm Asian. Tommy Chen, the owner, probably has enough good Yelp ratings without my two cents, but I must compliment him on HIS culinary skills. He always seems to "pull a rabbit" out of his hat and prepares a couple of delicious Cantonese dishes not on his regular "chop suey" menu. On this last Sunday he recommended a fish dish: whole flounder, deboned & sautéed with vegetables in a white sauce; then he deep fried the rest of the fish (mostly bones) so crispy that you can actually eat most of the remaining fish, just not the larger bones. Very tasty! I've had this dish in NYC & Boston Chinatowns & Tommy's was much better. For presentation, he plated the fish bones and layered the meat on top. We also had a deep fried shrimp paste stuffed tofu in black bean sauce(not on the menu)-excellent! Our other two dishes were on the menu. I highly recommend the BEEF CHOW FUN, made with FRESH NOODLES, not the dried ones in packages which need to be rehydrated, there's a difference, believe me. The last dish was a Gai Kow, chicken with vegetables, a dish our friend likes-nothing special & if we weren't with good friends I would not order it. So how can I go wrong? Everything I have tried. There has been fantastic. Except for one dish. The mushroom chicken. It looks realistically similar to diarrhea. So stay away from it. OH, and one other item. Your potstickers are not the potstickers. I am used to it got something in there that just doesn't sit right with me. I got the lunch special: orange chicken. It came with chicken fried rice and an egg roll, but they let me substitute for a spring roll. I LOVED the spring roll, it was quite possibly the best one I've ever had; it was so crispy and not soggy like most places. The rice was phenomenal, I couldn't stop myself from eating it all! I only rated 4 stars because I didn't really care for, or enjoy the orange chicken. This is a solid 4.5 star Chinese restaurant! My family has been coming here for years and when I flew in from Florida to see mom and dad this was our first stop! The egg drop soup is off the chain amazing! I order the bowl and wow is it delicious! As always I ordered the General Tso chicken. The chicken is cooked perfect and the breading is light! I eat here on a regular basis as it's not far from work. Everything I've had has been very delicious. In my opinion they're hot and sour soup is the best I've had. I've read other reviews where they said it's too peppery, but that's what I like. I find that other places I have to add pepper to it to taste the way I like. After eating a bowl of their hot and sour soup, I usually break out in a nice mild sweat, and my nose is running signifying that it's perfect. I've had dumplings, Szechuan, chicken, chop, Suey, and other dishesall very reasonably priced and their services is very very good. Can't wait to go back. read more

The chicken fried rice was a little sweet but was good it could have a little more veggies in it. My family used to come to this place all the time when I was a little kid. I hadn't been here in probably 20+ years, but I've come back twice so far in the past couple months, and had a great experience both times. The first time, they accommodated my request to have Cantonese pan fried noodles (Chow mein) even though it wasn't on their lunch menu. The chicken and vegetables were all fresh - even the oil they used for the complimentary wonton skins was fresh. There was a good variety of vegetables in the chow mein: water chestnuts, bok choy, baby corn, broccoli, carrots, and mushrooms. The gravy had good depth of flavor, but it was a little salty. I tried my friend's egg roll, which wasn't my favorite. The skin was good and crispy, but the filling was dry and not very tasty. I also tried some fried rice, which was decent. The sweet and sour pork looked dark, but it didn't taste burnt or bitter which is good. We had good service throughout the meal. The second time, I ordered takeout during the coronavirus pandemic. I got beef ho fan (wide rice noodles), orange chicken, and pan fried dumplings. The ho fan was excellent: fresh (not dried) noodles, great wok-seared flavor, fresh beef, generous portion size, and flavors on point. Only downside is that they used tenderizing powder on the beef. The orange chicken was also generously portioned. They used fresh white meat chicken, which was coated with a crispy breading. The breading wasn't too heavy or greasy, and the oil was fresh. The sauce was a little saltier than I like (wish it leaned a bit more toward sweet), but not bad. As for the dumplings, they were a little pricy for 6 regular-sized dumplings ($5.25), but good. They were filled with fresh, flavorful, juicy pork and the skins tasted homemade. It wasn't very browned on the outside, but when I pan fried them to reheat the next day, they crisped up very nicely and tasted a lot better. There are a lot of solid dishes here. Recently returned- the lunch portions are pretty small, but the lemon chicken was yummy. And it was obviously chicken, know what I'm sayin'? The sauce is lemony, tangy, and sweet. Overall, I think the food is fresher and portions are larger if you dine in. The eggrolls and fried crispy won-ton thingies were not super fresh. The hot and sour was also pretty bland this time. Idk. Hit or miss? The service is great, but Sun China on Telegraph is killin' em with their price, portion, and even flavor. I wasn't unhappy, but I won't rush back. Went here after seeing good GF friendly reviews on the Find Me GF app. It was super busy with take out order so we had to wait a bit, including to have a take cleared. The server was very knowledgeable about GF stuff and when I told her vegetarian, she seemed thrown for a second and then starting listing off GF vegetarian things I could have. While many sounded fine, I asked if they could do sweet and sour tofu, and she said yes...OR sesame tofu!! Got the latter, and the combo came with a soup(either egg drop is GF vegetarian but has eggs or vegetable soup is both GF and veggie/egg free). Portions were generous and while it didn't taste quite like the sesame tofu I remember (and looked a little tinnier than my partners sesame chicken), it was quite delicious. They packed up my extras which heated up well for lunch the next day. I was pleasantly surprised by this shopping center find, and will definitely be back! read more

This is by far the best Chinese food restaurant in Farmington Hills, which, now that I say it out loud, I realize isn't saying much. Nonetheless, I've been here many, many times and I've never been disappointed. The owners are always friendly and accommodating to specific tastes and care enough to remember their regulars and what they like. That is no simple task, as they have a very large and loyal following of regulars! They restaurant, itself, is small and the takeout orders come in by the dozens at a time. It is honestly quite an impressive takeout operation with the volume they handles so well. The portions are huge and the prices are very reasonable. The food is consistently fresh and delicious (even though it is obviously tailored mostly to an American palate). Yes, there are Chinese restaurants in the region that are certainly more authentically focused on Chinese cuisine, but I challenge anyone to find one more hospitable than this one! read more

I can't believe that I have never gone into Rainbow when it's literally right next door to Tofu House and Sushi House when I go to those about once a week. I guess I just assumed it was another run of the mill Chinese restaurants, but the meal definitely exceeded my expectations. First of all, I was so excited because the people that work there speak Cantonese, so as soon as I started talking to them in Cantonese, I was immediately able to establish a good rapport. I honestly don't even remember which lunch combo I was intending to try, but right away they suggested this Cantonese/Hong Kong dish that has beef slices, scallions, bean sprouts, served over wide rice noodles with a brown sauce. It also came with a bowl of soup, so I chose wonton soup. The picture shows a very small cup of soup, but that's because I had eaten half of it before I remembered to take a picture. Oops. Wonton soup was definitely run of the mill - the soup was basically water with chicken bouillon. The wonton was 90% skin with minimal meat. Although I'm a sucker for those fried wonton strips. I loved the actual dish. It can probably use an extra dash or 2 of soy sauce, but it's a good dish and it does remind me of being in Hong Kong. The pieces of beef were tender and the noodles weren't overcooked. The restaurant wasn't very big, but it was clean and the service was great. And even though I didn't get there until well after 1:30, my dish still came out very quickly and very fresh.I will for sure be going back. read more

This is the best place I have found within 30 miles, when it comes to quality, fresh, and tasty Chinese food.

I tried this spot based off Evie's review because one of my many many guilty pleasures is General Tso's Chicken. I placed an order for take-out for the General's and an order of Crab Rangoon, the two things that I feel any great Chinese joint should do really well. I ordered my General's Chicken HOT, sadly I haven't found a place yet that makes it hot enough for me. I picked up my order from a nice man who seemed rushed, I'm guessing he wanted to get down with the staff lunch steaming at one of the tables...regardless he was prompt, and off I went. When I got back to the office I was hoping for something spectacular. I first found that the Crab Rangoon were enormous!! For $4.95 for only 4, I needed something to be extraordinary about them. There must have been 3-5 Tablespoons of cream cheese crab filling in each of the four - pretty extraordinary in my experience. They were folded over like pockets rather than the traditional flower-like presentation but they tasted nice and I noticed some orange zest running through the filling which is always an added touch. The dipping sauce, however, was the basic Egg roll plum sauce in a larger container...I generally prefer the thicker and more typical Rangoon sauce on these. The General Tso's (they call it Tao's) was OK at best. The broccoli was bright and fresh while maybe just slightly raw....it only came with 4 medium florets but they were good. The Egg roll was not great and fried to death. The chicken itself was a little rubbery with some crispy edges that I liked, but while the sauce was an improvement over most others I've had, Szechuan Empire South still has my favorite (or used to have my favorite...gotta check that place out again to see if there still the jam). The heat was lacking but it always is no matter where I go....does anyone know where I can get really fiery General's Chicken? Pi's maybe? All that aside, it was fairly good and I'd bet they have some great signature dishes but the General's wasn't craveworthy....and if you order, try an order of their Goons sometime. read more
