Why did I wait so long to try you? This place was actually pretty good. They have dinner hours only so check before you go. Also carry out only. The menu can look confusing, but the lady on the phone explained it all so well. She was also very pleasant and not mean/rushing. I ordered the rice bowl (which I confirmed is their fried rice) with chicken. It was very good. You have a great amount of meat in there. I also ordered sweet and sour chicken. I did not like that they put the sauce in there. But, next time I know just ask for it on the side. I also got a chicken wonton soup. Everything was delicious. No complaints. Price was reasonable. They have a lot of great menu items to pick from. I will most definitely keep this place in my rotation for takeout. read more

Carry out only as of my visit in October, 2024. Ordered the #21 w/steak. Flavor was good as was the portion size. The dish was made with fresh ingredients and the steak was of acceptable quality. Egg rolls were well made. Hot and sour soup was delicious with fresh mushrooms. The person who took my order was courteous and repeated my order back to me. Value for the money was very good. For around $30, including tax and tip, you can feed two with zero leftovers. A nice quaint Chinese place that also serves Thai and other Asian specialties. Recommended. Good price & portion but I have to be honest the food didn't have any flavor the sweet and sour sauce (which I asked for extra on the side) didn't mind paying...but I received a mini shot size cup....was good but the chicken itself and rice were bland. I called my order in and when I picked my order up the young lady was very pleasant. Their actual dinning is closed at the present time,but not to appealing as far as a dine in ambiance. Now I will add I called my order in 1hr before closing not sure if that made a difference and if it did it shouldn't have. I'm new to the neighborhood but doubt I will be back. If only the noodles were not overcooked and some of the food we ordered were less salty, I'll give Apple Grill a score of 5 for flavor. Big portion size per order. Our Pad Se Ew noodles was served in a big blue bowl. We were given two small plates to split the order, still my husband and I took home a small left over. The chicken dumplings was pan fried. Looked greasy but tasted good with the soy sauce dip. The spring roll was also big that I had to split in half and shared with the hubby. It goes well with the plum sauce. Highly recommend their hot tea. I should have asked if it is oolong or plain black tea. We put lemon juice to enhance the flavor. Drinking by itself was already good. Free refill. The host was also our server. She and the other Asian lady clears the table, and serves the food...multi-tasking. When we had dinner today, out of the 15 guests who ate for dinner...majority of them are the baby boomers. There is only 4 gen x dining in...no millennials on sight. This restaurant is a local favorite. You might see the same elders or young family members who eat at Crispellies, Sunny Cafe and Red Coat. I would prefer eating at Apples Grill instead of Hung Hua. I must be delusional for ordering Thai food at a Chinese restaurant, but still, my pad Thai was the worst I've ever had. And I've tried a lot of pad Thai. It's filled with celery, onions, carrots, and some other items that don't belong. And not that I'm against eating veggies, but they completely threw off the taste, making it something very far from pad Thai. Instead of a lime, there was a lemon inside. It was puzzling, and I probably would have thrown it away if it wasn't nice and warm, and if I wasn't starving. That said, I got it to go, and the service was really friendly and fast. For the price, you get a meal undervalued in price. I'm talking leftovers for lunch and dinner! And the food is so good I did just that, two meals same food in a row. The cuts of the vegetables are simple and basic, like home cooking but (most, I say as I can't rate the ones I haven't tried) the entire entree is flavorful and doesn't take shortcuts on pleasing the mouth. I can't even begin to describe how disappointing my experience with Apple Grill was. I am in town from the West Coast where I don't get to have Almond Chicken because it doesn't exist where I live. First, let me start by saying that Chinese on Christmas is a tradition for my family. We ordered 3 entrees for pick up, which we did. The result? One of the entrees was missing despite being charged for it and we were not able to get through on the phone due to them being busy. When I finally did, I explained that one of our meals was missing and asked for a manager and guess what? I was placed on hold to never be picked up again. Finally, after a litany of phone calls for them just to ignore, my mom called on her phone and got through. It was then that we were told to just come back and pick up the missing item with no apologies or care to the inconvenience on Christmas day. This was my first experience with Apple Grill, I was excited to try their food and uphold the family tradition at the same time. Now, nope! I will not be back as they clearly don't care about their customers or keeping them. I understand that this is a busy day, but to be so dismissive when the error was on their end, is just unacceptable. Merry Christmas. read more

I've only lived in Michigan for 8 months and I'm from Southern California so sometimes I feel like a bit of food snob because I'm skeptical of Detroit restaurants because I haven't found a ton of great ones yet. HOWEVER, Apple Grill has been awesome for Chinese food. They have some of, if not the, best Chinese take out I've ever had. Their food is very fresh with high quality ingredients and tons of flavor. Where a lot of Chinese restaurants cook the life out of vegetables, they know how to keep them crispy and full of flavor. There sauces are light and not greasy. Just good stuff. We've had the Kung Pao Chicken, Chicken Curry Panang, Fried shrimp, Shrimp Fried Rice and a few other dishes and we've yet to be disappointed. We've only had take out from there but I've seen the restaurant is pretty small. Probably 25-30 seats max. Oh and another odd fact, every time I go there to pick up food it's filled with old people. Nothing wrong with old folks, just as a 30 something it's kind of odd to be so fond of a place that have such a senior citizen following. ;) read more

The hot and sour soup was very good -- each restaurant does it's own version -- this one was packed full of fresh vegetables and it's flavor was as good as it gets. The bowls were very good and very large. I asked the server to get me the most authentic Chinese dish they made -- Szechuan I was told. While it was not Szechuan it was flavorful, with lots of fresh veggies and protein (spicy does not mean Szechuan) but it was quite good but nowhere near real Szechuan spiciness. The BEST Chinese food I've had in a long time! We had a takeout order of: Spring Rolls Wonton Soup General Tsos Chicken Hunan Stir fry with Steak Vegetable Fried Rice Everything was fresh, quality ingredients! We ordered medium spice and it was the perfect "heat" for us. A lot of the time I get food spicer to add flavor--this is not needed here! There is plenty of flavor without being too spicy. The portions are huge...I would recommend splitting an entree between two people! Although we didn't done in, it is an option and there were about half a dozen tables filled at 7pm during the week. Very simple, clean dining room. Only one person working the front of house so I cannot comment on dining service but my carry out was ready in 15 minutes. Pricing was about on par/a slight bit higher with other Chinese restaurants in the area. But it's worth every extra $1-2 dollars per entree. As I said, portions are huge and great meats and vegetables! My absolute favor part of the meal was the soup, but everything was wonderful. This will be our new Chinese take-out! read more

Prices on here aren't right. They are a bit higher now (i'd say about $2 more). Food was good and hot and fresh tasting. They used real white meat chicken, each bite tasted like it was the breast & they used real broccoli not frozen! You can get fried rice or regular rice with your meal (same price) so that was nice! Okay, I need to give this place an update since I have tried more dishes. There are a few dishes I wouldn't order again. Our last trip there was our second time being there. I ordered the Crab Rangoon again because I love them so much there. I also ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken, my sister ordered the Singapore Noodles, and my husband ordered the Pad See-Ew (may not be on the menu, but you can order it). My dish tasted fine, but I did not like how much breading there was; it was really thick. The sauce was definitely sweet & sour, especially with the chunks of pineapple, so I would get this dish with white rice rather than fried for balance. The Singapore Noodles tasted just like how I have had it at other places, but it was a little on the dry & powdery side (from the curry). The Pad See-Ew was great, but I couldn't eat much of it because my Husband ordered it with hot spice. It was too spicy for me to really taste it, but he really liked it. Tonight was our third time. I wanted to try some more dishes. Again, I ordered the Crab Rangoon. I also order an egg roll and General Tso' Chicken with medium spice. My husband ordered the Sesame Chicken. Both with fried rice instead of white rice. The egg roll tasted fine. Both of our dishes were not good. The sauces tasted the same, only mine was spicy and my husband's was sweeter. The sauce was also kind of strong. The chicken in both dishes were breaded just like my second time..too thick. Not a fan of that. We both didn't take ours home as leftovers. I think I would have enjoyed these dishes more if the sauce was a little bit watered down (too strong for our liking) and with white rice instead of fried. My star rating remains the same because of cleanliness, nice service, and the dishes that we actually enjoyed. I will definitely continue coming here. I will just omit all the breaded chicken dished. Picked up carry-out from here twice in the past few weeks. First time Sesame Chicken ordered as is = tasty, but had a little much too much breading and texture not crispy enough. Second time ordered Sesame Chicken without breading and did not taste good. Spring roll - not a lot of flavor, but contained fresh veggies and would probably be a good vessel for a sauce. Chicken wonton soup delicious. That's right, wontons filled with chicken, not pork! Pad Thai was delicious - a little more sauce than most places i.e. moist. Chicken with tofu entree - default is fried tofu, you have to specify if you want steamed tofu. Fried rice comes with just egg - no other meat unless requested. Throughout all the entrees, you could tell they used fresh vegetables instead of canned/frozen. Food comes in plastic (entrees) or styrofoam (rice). In other words, not in the classic chinese food white paper box. read more

If you're looking for the pre-November Apple Grill, this isn't it. The place was sold to a family member and I don't think the menu is even the same as it was before. We were told this was THE best Chinese restaurant in the area, so we were eager to try it. The food was good, but not at all what we expected. However, being the first customers under the new ownership, we were treated very well, even treated to an order of sesame chicken (which was delicious!). Wish they would add some authentic chicken chow mien to the menu, however. What they brought me was NOT chicken chow mien unfortunately, but it was good..whatever it was. This is my GO TO Chinese place. Always flavorful, always fresh ingredients. I've never eaten inside the restaurant, to be honest, but the service at the counter is always been great for my to go orders. I think they put cilantro or something in the fried rice to make it uniquely tasty. We were going to Crispeli's and there was a 30 minute wait so we left and my husband noticed Apple's. Apple's a Chinese restaurant? What? I gave in and said, "Okay, fine, let's go there". (Not really wanting to go there.) That was 5 months ago, It was SO good, we eat there once a week! The vegetables are fresh and not over cooked, the meat tender, the shrimp cooked perfectly. The portions huge. The cost very little. Probably most of their business is take out. Ambience is clean, simple, and low key. I don't think they are able to service large groups of people, and have patience with their authentic accents. It's a small family owned and run business with a meal that's perfect and aroma that will linger in your memory! The food here was excellent. My issue was with the service. Our group waited quite awhile before we got any attention from the server. After we ordered our food, we waited a very long time before it arrived. I tried the Kang Pao Chicken stir fry. The flavor was excellent. I opted to have Chicken Fried Rice with my meal. It was some of the best Chicken Fried Rice I've ever had! There were large chunks of chicken. The flavoring was perfect. The ingredients in both dishes seemed fresh.
