I ordered a carry out from Golden Phoenix this evening, being Super Bowl night I thought the restaurant would have a long carryout wait and truthfully I wasn't sure the food would be as good as it usually is...The order was phoned in and we were told 20 minutes, when I got there to pick up our food order everything was fresh and hot. The food is consistently good and it is a family owned neighborhood location. Golden phoenix is an ok place for take out Chinese. The food isn't nasty, but it isn't my favorite. But overall is good. I believe their fried rice is the winner of everything. I never review restaurants but this one was so bad and the owner was so rude, I just had to. Our first clue should have been we were the only ones in the restaurant at 7pm. The waitress was so rude that I asked to speak to the manager , she then told me she was the owner. The food was horrible, almost inedible and the rudeness continued all throughout dinner. Cabbage filled egg rolls. Wrappers were tasty and not greasy, but bean sprout filling is my preference and not cabbage, which is what they use here. Silver Needle Noodle was good, but not great. I prefer a different sort of a noodle than this, but the flavor was spot on. Lunchtime. Dined in. The wait for food was over 30 minutes and no one was in restaurant nor carrying out. Almond chicken salty sauce soy like gravy was horrible and breading soggy. I felt bad that I had recommended this restaurant to my friend. She called 3 hours in advance for a $300.00 order. A traditional family get together. THE FOOD was DELICIOUS, but they did not secure the food in tight containers. trays with aluminum covers. Needless to say, the gravy's were all over the car & clothes of the couple who picked it up. On 9 /18/24, I was discriminated against as a Black man and treated unfairly at the Golden Phoenix Chinese Restaurant on Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfieldfield Mi. Upon entering the restaurant, I wasn't seated as expected. Instead, I was told that it was carry-out only. (not given the option to dine in) I kindly left the restaurant and sat in my vehicle long enough to search on google for other restaurants nearby that I could dine in. As I begin to exit the parking lot, amazingly, I witness other customers entering the restaurant and being seated. Upon re-entering and speaking with the employee, regarding her not giving me an option to dine inside, she repeatedly lied and made excuses. I then asked to speak with her manager. Upon speaking with her manager, I was not pleased with his response. He neglected to take accountability for their action. He kept telling me that he was short handed. I informed him that, I was there before the 10 Caucasians that were properly seated. He then stated that the customers that showed up after me were regular customers that dine in every wednesday. After leaving the restaurant the 2nd time, I witness the female employee exiting the building and placing a hand written note on the door, stating wednesdays is carry-out only. In stark contrast to all the negative reviews, my experience was very positive. The Uber Eats delivery order was filled with no errors or omissions. Special instructions were followed to a tee. The shrimp and chicken dishes were pleasing to the palette. I requested medium spice level, and enhanced the heat a bit with Trader Joe's Italian hot peppers which made for the perfect fusion. Monday, my colleagues and I ordered lunch for delivery. I ordered the almond boneless chicken with vegetable fried rice and it was delicious. The batter on the chicken was light, almost like tempura and the sauce was very good. My one negative was the $5.50 to upgrade the rice and the vegetables that were pretty basic, snow peas, green beans and carrots. For that price, I'd expect vegetables like broccoli, bok choy, watercrest, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots and/or baby corn. It had great flavor, so that's why I gave it a 4-star rating, but next time, I might stick to the chicken fried rice. read more

We have been going to this restaurant for 25 years. Saturday April6, 2024 is the last time for us. Our take out order took an hour to prepare, shrimp fried rice (quart), egg rolls, egg drop soup and Szechuan chicken: Total $64.00. There were exactly 6 shrimp in the quart of shrimp fried rice. The egg rolls were full of bean threads. The Szechuan chicken had four small nuggets of chicken with peppers. Nothing except the egg drop soup was tasty. Restaurant was not busy, until a few hours later. My mother was walking, with a cane to the table, since she just had foot surgery. TWO WAITRESSES, at the same time, tried to PUSH THROUGH my mom, instead of waiting for her to pass, or going an alternate way. Waitress, and staff, IGNORED us for majority of the meal. When 2 of our 3 meals came 1 1/2 HOUR later, the food was ICE COLD!! When my father, who is elderly, diabetic/ ill, asked THE "MANAGER" to help us warm up the meals, SHE WAS OVER EMOTIONAL, AND SCREAMED AT HIM!! There was another waitress at the table by to us who also YELLED at another elderly couple. Took us almost 3 hrs to get our food, and check, from the staff. (Yes, we asked a few people for help) In the end, we packed up our meals and went home to eat them... By the time I got home and ate, it was almost 8pm. Spent the the time eating at home alone, when it should have been with my family! We love trying different Chinese places that serve food like they used to. A favorite place is House of Lee in Farmington, but they stopped offering pressed duck. We saw that Golden Phoenix offers Almond Pressed Duck, and thought we'd give this place a try. Although the overall rating on Yelp was low, several bad reviewers mentioned they were there when it was crowded, and some server was rude. We thought the place can't be that bad if it was "crowded". We ordered ahead on a Saturday afternoon. Food was ready when we arrived and the gentleman that handed us the order was very polite. But best of all, the food was wonderful...fresh and delicious !! Chicken with Black Bean, Mongolian Beef, Pressed Duck, Egg Rolls, Pork Fried Rice, and four gigantic dinner rolls on the house... nothing came close to disappointing. I used to frequent Golden Phoenix with some regularity when they were at Maple and Telegraph. Now I go there occasionally. I went there last week to get take out. It was a disappointment. My lomein was mostly noodles, and not a lot of other contents. At other Asian establishments, the lomein used Fettucini thick noodles. Here they are thin and unremarkable. Only ordered the egg rolls carryout just as a tester. Superb. Fresh and unique shrimp cabbage and unique crispy wrap. I will be back for these alone. Ive tried many egg rolls and these are top notch. These use more cabbagelike inside than bean sprout inside. Plum dipping sauce more pineapplie than orange taste. Tasty. Has a dash of hot mustard in it. This was one of the very worst Chinese meals we have ever had. I honestly don't know how to describe how awful it was. If you're craving Chinese food, you would be WAY BETTER OFF going anywhere else or even getting a frozen Chinese entree from your local grocery store and putting it in the microwave.
