Took a team of 14 for dinner there this past Friday evening, let me be clear, an absolutely awful experience. Let me begin with the food, my wife ordered buffalo sliders, just awful, tasted like the dollar menu at Arby's. The service was also just abhorrent, our appetizers and drinks arrived as promised, only to wait approximately an hour for the entrees, no apologies, not acknowledgement, absolutely awful service. This was a $1k plus tab, no acknowledgement of the poor service and no apology, a level of arrogance that no one should experience, avoid this place at all costs. read more

Had a wonderful dinner at Wild Caddis. Keith and David were so attentive and engaging. They took complete care of us. The beet salad was flavorful and the pumpkin brittle topping was creative. Our party had the Huckleberry Brined Chicken, Lamb Shank, and Elk Chops. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. They were thoughtfully prepared and very satisfying. We had the special house-made Aubergine Ice Cream and Chocolate Mousse for dessert. I can't explain how good the ice cream was! So creamy and the flavor was nicely complex. Chef Nick came out to say hello at the end of the meal and brought a Beet & Salted Caramel Ice Cream for us to sample as well. Where do I even start with this amazing place!! David was absolutely incredible! He went above and beyond and was such an incredibly sweet soul. Perhaps one of the nicest servers and humans I have met. He explained everything, made sure everything was perfect, has the best personality, recommended wine pairings and we also got to see the amazing cellar! We hope to stay at the lodge next time we are in town based on this experience! Gorgeous views! Try the pork belly and filet. The pork belly doesn't really need an explanation. The salty sweet combo they created with the apple risotto and cherry compote is unique and delicious. The cherries carry strong fall flavors, but you can always leave those off. The filet was perfectly prepared, and a highlight of the evening. The split pea soup was a surprising show stopper. This is the cowboy of all split pea soups. It has pork belly on it y'all. Not a little bit either. A good, hearty, satisfying amount that leaves you happy happy happy. read more

Cannot recommend this place enough! I am shocked it doesn't have a higher rating. I went with a group of 3 couples while we were in Big Sky for a trip. Being from the Tri-State area we are pretty particular when it comes to food and everything blew us away. One of our friends is a professional chef and even he was raving about everything we had. The ambiance was great, they were able to seat us in the fireplace/bar area and it was the exact Hallmark movie vibes we wanted for our trip. The service was also great. Had a dinner here last night. Our server was a young man who lives in Maryland part time (I am blanking on his name) he was so kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. He gets 5 stars in our book. The food, however, was another story. The bread was so salty we couldn't eat it. I had the beet salad and subbed balsamic as I wasn't a fan of the vanilla orange dressing. My boyfriend had the wagyu tartar which was good. Unfortunately those were the best part of the meal. My boyfriend was not a fan of his rainbow trout. My sea bass had several bones in it which made me too afraid to eat. The guacamole on top of the rice made the rice very cold. We are not the type to send food back so my boyfriend instead ordered the squash risotto for us to share since we didn't love our dinners. That arrived and lacked salt and seasoning and the risotto was over cooked and mushy. We were sad that it went this way as we were so looking forward to this dinner. read more

I would give this a 3.8 if possible. It's better than I expected for sure. I didn't expect the food to be on point because it is Montana. It sounds a bit ignorant to say, but definitely surprised. The huckleberry sauce paired harmoniously with the Elk, and I was wanting more after my entree. Service was decent, my water was replenished often and plates were taken away quickly. I wish entree was served more quickly, but overall satisfied. Better than I expected for sure. It would've been a 4 if I actually got to try the shrimp appetizer and if they had iced tea. One of the coordinators dropped an appetizer and I don't think we got more after. The greens had a good crisp and the piece of foie grass was good. The foie gras was thankfully on the smaller side, since too much is overkill. read more

Unfair tipping scheme! We have had good dinners here in the past. But this time I inadvertently double tipped. Many telephone calls and texts later, the GM, Scott, still has not refunded the double tip. We enjoyed a lovely evening with my family, 7 of us, and a group I don't often get to be with - I was distracted! A tip of 20% was automatically added and the waiter did not let me know this. I automatically added another 20%! Yikes!! My mistake, I didn't check the bill until time to pay my credit card. A tip totaling 43% of food & drink. A most expensive evening ! Don't make my mistake! My friend and I recently drove into Big Sky and were having trouble finding reservations since many places were full or closed on Sunday. We contacted Rainbow Ranch on a whim and the manager who answered the phone was so incredibly kind and accommodating. The dining area was full but he was able to create a make-shift seating area near the bar/ fire place. After a long day on the road, we very much appreciated this. We ordered the rainbow trout and halibut special which was so delicious and beautifully plated. Our server was also very customer oriented, despite how busy it was, and made us some delicious spiked hot chocolates. Highly recommend checking this little gem out for a classy dinner in Big Sky. I had a few girlfriends come visit me in Bozeman from all over the USA. I decided to surprise them with a little staycation at the Rainbow & it was the best idea I've ever had! Scott, the manager was so kind to us. He made sure that the champagne I had ordered ahead of time was chilled & waiting in the room upon arrival. Every single time we go into the hot tub a staff member started & maintained a fire for us. Ashley, the kind bartender even came down to the tub to deliver us four delicious Moscow mules. The bedding was clean and so comfortable. The robes made it feel really luxurious. We all agree that our night staying at the Rainbow was a highlight of the trip, thanks to Scott & staff. Ok so lets be real here this place claims to be a lovely resort with high end amenities. In reality, this is more realistically the quality of a super 8 motel with the same kind of dodgey people as guests. I am a mother of 2 and the people in the room next to us have been having disproportionate loud intercourse to the point that my children are extremely traumatized and fear i may need to send them to counseling. The food is not what they had advertised (extremely fussy and very ok at best). The waitress was very unenthusiastic and unaccomadating. As for the bathrooms in the room i would say you would be better off using a port a potty it would offer the same level of hygiene. Overall feels like a hospice care home. I would advise going to a large chain hotel the experience would make u feel far cleaner than you could feel here. read more

After spending a week camping in Yellowstone, my man and I (we're foodies from Seattle) were hungry for some high-brow urban cooking. I read a couple of Yelp reviews on Rainbow Ranch and thought they were worth a try. And did they knock it out of the park! We started with the charcuterie: succulent smoked salmon; spicy, rich bison andouille sausage; duck pate; stone-ground mustard; cherry chutney....all made in-house. Then a thinly-sliced roasted beet salad with arugula and goat cheese, dressed with a light citrus vinaigrette. Finally, I got the tender and perfectly cooked elk steak with crimini bread pudding and asparagus (thin stalks, slightly crispy, just right). My husband got the more robust, bursting-with-flavor buffalo loin with house-made buffalo kielbasa and light, flavorful mashed potatoes. Both plates were perfectly portioned (we tend not to like the huge portions typical of western country dining). oh, and the wine! We tried 2 Pinots and a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, all three were perfect. Ambiance: 5 stars (cozy, comfortable, elegant without pretension) Food: 5 stars Presentation: 5 stars Staff: 5 stars (accessible, friendly, knowledgeable, not at all unctuous.) We have lived in Montana since 1992. Over the years we have stayed at Rainbow Ranch many times and enjoyed wonderful meals at the restaurant. This was not the case on Christmas Eve. I booked our rooms and dinner reservation on October 20th. Thank goodness I called to reconfirm- we were not on the reservation list. When we checked in - we noticed things missing in our room . No Kleenex in containers, no Keurig caps, no coffee mugs, no fire starters, no shampoo container in shower, no towels in hot tub area. It made us wonder what other turnover cleaning had not been done. We were seated late for our reservation. Our waiter was wonderful and diligently trying to offer good service despite waiting on tables across the dining room. All four of our meals arrived cold. We sent them back. They came back with plates hot and food still cold . We told our waiter- we were leaving. He said , " I know our food sucks - just leave - you don't owe anything!" We drove down the road to Riverhouse BBQ and got a table right before they closed . Had great food with friendly service . Things are imploding at Rainbow Ranch. We saw 2 chefs in their Red Chef jackets walk out the front door as we were leaving. We also overheard tables around us express frustration with the service and their meals. After dinner , I returned to try and tip our waiter. He refused to take any cash from me . I know staffing is an issue due to CoVId but this seems to go beyond this . This restaurant is amazing! The view is beautiful as it is right on the Gallatin River. The food is unique and expertly crafted. So far during our stay we have enjoyed one dinner and one breakfast at the restaurant and every single dish was spectacular. Last night my husband and I shared the charcuterie and cheese board which featured a pork, a bison brasuli and a duck prosciutto all house cured. Then for our main dishes my husband had Venison au Poivre and I had Bison with quail eggs. Both dishes had different fire roasted vegetables. Truly amazing! This morning was just as delicious. My husband enjoyed the Heuvo Racheros and I enjoyed my Elk Sirloin and eggs. Each dish had fire roasted tomatoes and fruit. We will definitely be going back. read more

Our server must have been new as she had to read all the specials and wasn't very knowledgeable about some of the dishes. The charcuterie was interesting but very salty. The salads were wonderful. The surf and turf was ok. We were told they were prawns, but they were small shrimp. Not impressed. The wagyu strip steak was fatty. The ahi tuna was overcooked. Not sure where to start. We called a week ago and then again 3 days ago to confirm a table for 9 at 7pm. They could take us no problem. This should have been a warning sign when every other restaurant in the valley was booked solid every night. We got there and they said our reservation was for 6:30, but they'd make up another table for us. We thought that was nice until we walked through the beautiful wood furniture dining room and into a side room where they had put up folding tables and chairs for us. Oh well let's roll with it. Unfortunately it was downhill from there. 1. The arugula salad didn't have arugula. 2. Three of us ordered french onion soup. More like water soup. Literally had no flavor. 3. Three different beers showed up warm. 4, They brought the wrong steak for one of us, and it was awful). 5. The elk was tough, over cooked, and the sweet potato mash served with I think all the entrees was more like baby food. The server did his best and let me say we really wanted to love this place. 19 years ago we did our rehearsal dinner there and so we were sorely disappointed. These sound like first world problems and they are, yet when you go to a place like this and pay $ like this it's a real bummer. read more

This is a nice cozy restaurant with very good food. Our party of five have no complaints of the food. An extensive and expensive wine menu is offered. The mixed drinks are a bit weak. My spouse sent my drink back after I said it was weak. The very nice waitress apologized and returned the drink to the bartender. She quickly returned with the drink and I was told the bartender said he put exactly 1.5 ounces of gin in the drink and there wasn't anything he could do. Really? During our meal, a group of 8 were seated in the same dining area. They were extremely loud and obnoxious. We couldn't have a conversation without yelling. We ordered more wine and waited 20 min because the bartender was personally waiting the party of 8. We asked our waitress to ask the other party to quiet down, but she didn't. We complained to another waiter and he just apologized. It was by far the most annoying dinner out I've ever experienced out. They each received about 4 leaves on each plate. I think if a split portion will be this small the waitress should have explained . Rainbow Ranch was a truly magical place to host our wedding weekend. Their event staff was attentive throughout our entire planning process, and their hospitality and warmth could not have been matched. They also helped accommodate our changing guest list and unpredictable weather leading up to the wedding itself :) Our families and bridal party stayed on the ranch throughout the entire wedding weekend which made our ceremony and reception even more special!
