Caesar salad - old lettuce stalks, cheap store croutons, really poor presentation with minimal prep. The stalks weren't separated. Just big chunks of white stalk. Green parts were wilted and tasteless. It was inedible. I overheard the table next to us draw the same conclusion. 2. Pappardelle with mushrooms and grilled chicken - sauce was good but clearly too tasty to have been prepared onsite, probably shipped to restaurant in a bag. Chicken was cold and pre-prepped. Garlic bread was clearly from a freezer and hard, not tasty. 3. The server was actively indifferent to who ordered what and where to place drinks or plates. This was across drink orders, apps, and entrees. Every single time the server put every order in front of the wrong person, even after guidance. Group of 4 people, not hard if you're paying attention. This server was not. I saw the manager running around but she didn't bother stopping by our table, even after I sent back both dishes 2/3rds uneaten, hence this review. So for unappetizing entree and a truly inedible Caesar salad, a nonalcoholic beer and several glasses of water, I'm out of pocket around $80. No tip. We went here for both the lunch buffet and the a la carte dinner and had a great experience overall. The lunch buffet offered premium meats, including smoked salmon and bison flank steak. One that I did not like was the mushroom soup, which tasted like biscuit gravy and was not enjoyable by itself. And service during the lunch buffet could have been better. We asked for plain butter for our bread since we did not like the sweet butter offered at the buffet. Our first waitress forgot about us, so we had to ask another waitress to bring it. Dinner was a much better experience. I ordered the tomato bisque, and it was comforting and enjoyable given the cold weather outside. We ordered a soup, the garlic roasted Brussels sprouts which came in a huge platter and were tasty, and then the trout, which came with broccolini and potatoes and was enough to share between two of us. The kids were able to order a kids pasta off the menu. We got a mahattan with Elijah Craig and a Negroni and both were good. All in all good service and good food. A ton of meat options as expected. If you come here be prepared to wait at least 45 minutes between placing your order and getting the food. We came here a second time a year later and waited an hour for a soup, salad, and sandwich to come out. The kitchen is not run well and not organized. There was a table of 14 and only a few other tables (not a fully packed dining room) and the kitchen struggled getting food out. Dined in during our weekend in Big Sky. Chet's Bar and Grill was an easy option since we were staying at Huntley Lodge. Just keep in mind that it's not going to be the most affordable option in the area. We were in town celebrating my husband's birthday so we weren't as conscience about the hefty price tags as we would normally be. The restaurant is nice without being overly fancy. There were some people who were dressed up a bit and others sporting their comfy sweats. Our server for the night was Aspen and she was very sweet and attentive. Now let's talk food. The mac and cheese was good but way too much to spend on a small dish if you ask me. Nothing over the top about it unless you consider gruyere and truffle bread crumbs worth $19. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty, just not worth spending as much as we did. My husband ordered the ribeye and it was cooked perfectly at his requested medium rare. He was obsessed with the Huntley butter and kept raving about how much it helped elevate the dish. The asparagus and mashed potatoes were perfect compliments. Our only complaint was the edges were a little too charred for our liking. It overpowered the steak a bit. I had the braised short rib with absolutely zero regrets. It was tender and flavorful - hands down my favorite thing of the night. The sage honey carrots were a great touch and if I could have finished the whole dish, I would have! The portions were great. The cheesecake was light and fluffy. Very likely a no-bake cheesecake if that's your thing. I liked it, especially after a hefty meal. But my husband on the other hand loves a dense cheesecake so this was not his jam. The huckleberry topping was a nice touch. Our bill (including the tip) was a whopping $200. For decent food + a couple of hot apple ciders, it's not my first choice. We likely won't be back unless we really want another short rib. read more

After a long day driving and arriving during the first snow of the season, we just wanted to sit down and eat, and not have to go anywhere. We really enjoyed our meal. Total bill before tip was $88 so this isn't a cheap place, but it's in a ski resort so what else is new? The ambience was great - warm and cozy, pretty much exactly the vibe we were looking for. Our server, Olivia, was great too. The food was very good - I think we were both pleasantly surprised. My pasta hit the spot, and my son loved his chicken and waffles. After one dinner and three breakfasts at Chet's, I believe I can confidently give this place 1 star and recommend avoiding it at all costs. It's so bad, we'll be skipping our final two complimentary breakfasts from staying at the Huntley Lodge for a family of 7. The complimentary breakfast was one of the reasons we booked the Huntley and paying for breakfast is honestly far preferable to going here again. Let's start with the service. One lady wanders around doing nothing at breakfast, but she also seems to be the only one there every day. At one point, she looked out the window for a solid 15 minutes. She once got us coffee once. Just set a pot on the table and said "That's what you wanted, right?" The male hostess was there 2 days in the morning and heavily sighs every time he looks at his list when there are like 5 tables full out of 25. The rest of the servers we had were unremarkable at best. Not particularly friendly. Definitely not very attentive as we had to remind them about forgotten food and to bring coffee creamer several times. Several wrong orders. They seem to be a different set of servers each day and apparently the servers can't handle more than about 2-3 tables? We came on a Sunday morning and was told it would be a 1 hour wait, but the dining room was far from full, maybe 8 tables for 3 servers. Apparently they aren't properly staffed. The atmosphere is extremely average "lodge" vibe overall, but when we had dinner there was a loud game show event in the hall next door. So loud, another employee asked if we wanted to be moved so we moved tables. He also gave us dessert to go for the experience, which was probably the nicest service we had. For the food, let's start with the positives. The fish and chips were solid and so was the French Dip, per my family. My Bison Burger was below average burger overall, didn't taste particularly fresh. Typical resort pricing here, but you also expect average to above average food quality. I'd give the dinner food 3 stars. Breakfast food, a rundown. Marscapone in crepes was bad. We had to send back and "We probably just don't like Marscapone." No, ma'am, we've had crepes in France. -Absolute abominable scrambled eggs. Check the pic, come on. -Cold rancher potatos. Every time. -Cold sausage links right from the kitchen. -Barely toasted bread/English muffins (multiple days multiple people) -Rubbery poached eggs both as a side and on on eggs Benedict -Hollandiase sauce was broken and flavorless on the Benedict -Hair in my butter one day. The good: Bacon is good. Steel cut oats are good. Pancakes are ok. This place is a disaster. It's clear no one wants to be there. Effort is obvious and there is zero care here. If it wasn't for the complimentary breakfasts I'm not sure this place would survive even in a resort town. For context, the Best Western Plus we stayed at on our road trip to get here has a better breakfast. read more

What a perfect way to end our family vacation!! There were 9 of us so we stopped by not realizing they didn't open until 4:00. When my aunt peeked in the door Chadwick kindly talked with her about accommodating our group and helped her with making our reservation. When we arrived the next evening our table was ready and perfect for our large group. Chadwick quickly came over and welcomed us and remembered my aunt. He continued to check on us frequently throughout the evening. Our server, Jordan, AKA Crab Man, was the perfect guy for our group. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and made great recommendations but even more so, his sense of humor and ability to make each of us feel special is truly a talent. (And he had great photography skills too!) Our family had a variety of menu offerings including the trout, fried chicken, Wagyu steak, salmon to name a few and we all enjoyed our entrees. We started with tasty beverages from the bar, enjoyed a bottle of Daou Cab with our meal and per Crab Man's recommendation, ended with their delicious cheesecake. Not sure if there's live music every Friday night. There were TV screens installed at the right places so you don't have to turn around and see what everyone else is watching. We came here to celebrate our last night at Big Sky. Two of us has the tenderloin, cooked perfectly and the spuds were great too. The asparagus wasn't prepped correctly, very firm ends and inedible. Two of the gals in our group ordered the orzo chickpea pasta. When those entree's came out they looked like rice, not orzo. When brought up to the server, she learned that they were in fact serving rice instead of orzo. Shame on the kitchen staff for not disclosing this. What an insult to your patrons. Our server was amazing and made it right in the end. Shocking nobody else noticed this in the days they were out of orzo. Unreal. read more

I wasn't expecting much from this hotel restaurant. Their breakfast was boilerplate at best, though it did have a lot of options. However, the evening meal was the best thing I had in my visit to Big Sky. First, the dining area is charming. I'm not always a fan of taxidermied animals, but I enjoyed the cougar overlooking the proceedings opposite our table. Also, on the wall near our table, there were three examples of old-school wooden skis with questionable foot bindings. Neat! Negatives: the food and drink service was slow, and the beverage we tried (hot cider) was bad. However, the service was friendly and attentive. Our server helped us choose our order, and as a result, I got just about the best restaurant salmon I've ever had, with a delicious side of lemon orzo, and also a fantastic red velvet cake for dessert. Our server said this was their last night before switching to a new menu. I have to say, I may be going back for our last night here! read more

We only stopped for a beer while waiting for a pizza from Pizza Works. There were two couples at the bar, the dining room was nearly empty. It was 8 pm. The beer tap list is all Montana beers, the bartender talked us through the list and made a great recommendation. He chatted with us about the area while he cleaned glasses. The prices are not much higher than back home for a pint of beer. I would definitely hang out here again. read more

This restaurant is inside a hotel and it feels like a hotel restaurant. No doubt about that! If you are all in for a Montana experience, the Huckleberry cocktail is not worth the try, they should explore a better recipe, but their Bison chunks with chimichurri and the bison hamburgers are delicious! Chet's is a good restaurant which has been a staple for every Big Sky visit. Most often the food is excellent and the service is superb! The Chicken is delicious and seasoned perfectly and not overwhelming the chicken. The Bison Chili is also very flavorful and hearty enough to act a meal on it's own. Chet's have great service and the wait staff is very friendly. Unfortunately, our last visit, the kitchen was understaffed which led to extended wait times but management kindly rectified the situation with a generous discount to our bill. read more

One of my favorite foods in the whole wide world is fry bread. Every since my parents took me to Canyon De Chelly and we ate at a local restaurant that served fry bread tacos, I was hooked. Chet's does a great version, with a Smokey and flavorful bison chili topped with spring greens and what I think was an avocado aioli. My wife went with the avocado fry bread appetizer. She said it was the best avocado toast she's ever had and that woman has eaten A LOT of avocado toast. She also got a half salad and added shrimp. Three large shrimp were added for $10. She said the salad was fine but the avocado fry bread was far better and less than half the price of the salad. My Smokey, Agave, Grapefruit cocktail was amazing. The beer list was small but had some great local brews. Service was friendly and fast. The view of the mountain is also a nice addition the the dining experience. read more

Great dining experience, the only negative thing was the wait time. The Restaurant was busy last week so we sympathized with the workers and didn't make a stink. Dessert took an exceptionally long time to come out. (Maybe 15-20 mins?) The servers seem to be spending a lot of time at the computer. We asked our server why and they vaguely said it had something to do with their new computer system that hasn't been fixed yet. Said they're doing their best to work around it. It seems like Chet's would want their employees spending less time on the computers and more time taking care of their guests?? Otherwise, the food was fantastic, and the server was fun. 2018 and 2019 Chet's was a solid spot. Not much to look at, but the food was surprisingly good. Come 2020 and so much has changed. In previous years Chet's was a two-time dinner spot. This year it was a,"wow, that was disappointing." Service was good, but the food just missed the mark. Of the six people who ate, only one was pleased with their meal and she ordered a salad.
