I am unfortunately writing this review because I had to use his services a month ago. On 3/10/24 I realized my dog was rapidly declining so I made an appointment for the 12th to put him down. I couldn't not bring myself to have taken him to the vet office to put him down after his last visit, he was scared and knew in my heart if I had to put him down it would be at home where he grew up and spent his life. Dr Smith came a bit earlier but was very empathetic and comforting. He explained the process and made sure I knew I could take the time I needed. As we went through the process he explained to me and reassured he was fine. He was gentle and gave me alone time for me and my other pet to say goodbye. My Snoopy came home exactly a week after he was put down so I was very happy that the turn around time was fast. I was so glad to find Dr. Smith when it was finally time to say goodbye to my senior kitty, PC. Losing a pet is always difficult, but during quarantine it's extra tough as having a pet to share that time with is such a comfort. PC had a really good life. He showed up on my porch in 2003 and he's been with me ever since. He was probably over 20 and lived each day like a teenager. He loved getting into a good cat scrap and even tried to take on the neighbor's cat a few weeks before his passing. Way to go, PC! He was loads of fun, super friendly and helped me through a lot of tough times. To start, Dr. Smith has his calendar available for clients which made it easy to schedule the appointment. Right away, that helped take some of the stress off. His email communications and instructions were clear, and most of the information is also on his website. He showed up promptly when he said he would. At 12 pm he was on my front porch in a mask and scrubs, and I directed him to the backyard where he'd do the procedure. PC loved spending time sunning himself in the yard, so for this to be his final surroundings was perfect. I won't go into detail, but the procedure was quick, simple and peaceful. I got to hold PC in my lap, giving him lots of pets and telling him how much joy he had brought me these past 17 years. Dr. Smith stood back and was respectful to give me a much time and space as I needed to say goodbye. While I couldn't see his expression through the mask, I think he got a little emotional as well. Even covered up in a face mask, his compassion shone through. I wish I could have given him the big hug he deserved. Dr. Smith works with Pets at Peace in San Ramon for cremation services. They were equally as kind and compassionate. I opted to pick up PC's ashes and they presented them in a beautiful box with his initials engraved on a small plaque. Dr. Anthony Smith was such a positive light during a very difficult time. His website was extremely informative and scheduling system was easy to use. It was nice to see the different appointments available as opposed to having to go back and forth with a receptionist especially during a time when you just might not feel like talking. It was a late Tuesday night and the next available appointment wasn't until the following Monday. I wrote in the notes that I would like something sooner if it was available and Anthony got back to me the next day that he had a Friday morning appointment available. That in itself was a huge relief that I didn't have to prolong Maddie's suffering any longer. During that time, I got to spend more time with her and also read up on blogs and websites to understand the process and feel confident that this was the right decision. The line "When you look into your pet's eyes, are they asking you for help? Are they telling you that they're tired, that they love you but it's time for them to go?" really made me feel more at peace and put aside any of my own selfish feelings. The morning of the appointment was obviously extremely emotional but Anthony came on time, was very respectful, didn't rush, and only proceeded when I gave the ok. What made things a bit harder was that Maddie seemed to have a little more energy that morning, got up to eat and even use the bathroom. Deep down in my heart I knew that it didn't mean she was all better but that little bursts of energy come and go at the end of life. I brought this up to Anthony and he confirmed that it was true and agreed with me that it's comforting to know that she would be able to transition on feeling "better" and that she wouldn't feel any pain as I couldn't bear the thought of her passing on suffering any more than she probably already was. When Anthony confirmed that she was now free, he gently asked if I would like a clay paw print and did it on the spot. I'm so grateful to have this keepsake since it wasn't something I could have wrapped my head around doing on my own beforehand. I chose the option of having him take her with him and have a private cremation done with her ashes returned to me. He is partnered with Bubbling Well Pet Memorial Park in Napa and I received her ashes approximately 2.5 weeks later via FedEx with a required signature. I did not expect anything fancy since I did not order anything extra, but I was surprised to see a beautiful wooden box with an engraved gold nameplate and a certificate of private cremation with the date that it was done. Before then, I was feeling guilt thinking of all the bad things that could happen during transit and wondered if I should have just drove to Napa to pick up her ashes, but immediately felt relief and at peace after seeing how thoughtful the boxed urn was packaged down to the detailed and beautiful certificate. Being a polite person, I'd always say hello. After a few weeks of this, I thought I heard her say "Take me home. Lose the dog." I invited her to join me (and refused to lose the dog). No deal. Imagine my surprise when I came home from work one day and found her milling about in front of my place. When I asked what she was doing there, she batted her kitty eyes at me and purred a pleading "meooowwwww." I brought her inside and that was that. She insisted that her name was Clarissa, despite my best efforts to give her an esoteric literary name. We compromised on Rissa. She was a quirky cat, and took a long while to warm up to people (except for my visiting mother, who is Not That Fond of Animals. Rissa elected to sleep with her right away, snoring loudly the entire night). She grew fat and fluffy and affectionate toward me, and we understood each other without words. About 2 years ago, Rissa had a bad spell and was diagnosed with simultaneous heart and kidney failure, which required opposite treatments. The vets said we'd be lucky if she made it another week. They gave us some meds and wished us the best. You have to love a spunky former street cat that is not ready to go... the girl hung in there for another two and a half years, requiring a pill every night. Again, we had an agreement, and things were good. This past weekend, in the midst of another family drama, Rissa quietly started to take a turn for the worse. After 10 years of friendship and 2+ years of being a medical miracle, it was time. I will always remember her soft bunny fur, her penchant for feet, those compelling green eyes, and her polite yet insistent meow/ahem. I won't forget her rumbly purr or her squeaky snore, her love of hiding behind something and jumping out to pounce at me (a little game I called stalking), or her random schoolgirl crushes on unexpected people. She was a solid pal, and one of the best I've ever had. Rissa, I wish you the best of soft kitty treats, a delicious patch of sunshine for napping, and all the mice (toy or real) you could ever want. Dr. Smith was so kind, patient and respectful. Our 19 year old cat had many health issues - most awful was glaucoma and the only cure was remove her eyes (which we did not do). We decided it was time for her to get some peace from the discomfort and constant treatments. Dr. Smith was recommended by our vet. I am so very thankful of his services. He allowed our sweet girl the dignity of passing over in the comfort of her own home and in my partner's lap while we both petted her. He made an awful time bearable. If I could give five million stars to Dr. Smith, maybe that wouldn't even be enough. I have resisted home euthanasia mostly due to the extra cost, due to one unpleasant experience with a different person, and an unpleasant rushed phone call with yet another.
