While wondering around Ojai and other parts of Ventura county we came across Rainbow Bridge. To be honest I thought it was a pet crematorium or hospital because of the poem Over The Rainbow Bridge. We'd been day tripping and in need of coffee and a snack and decided to check it out. It's a great little health food store. I really have no complaints about it. The snacks were good, the coffee....well it was late in the afternoon and this is not Starbucks. For such a small store they really pack the isles with choices and the staff at the DELI COUNTER were friendly and helpful. My complaint is not about the store but about the employee that decided to take her break outside at a table right behind us. She was loud, rude, cursing and made three phone calls trying to track down some marijuana for her and her friends. She was so loud everyone on the patio heard her. She then went on to say how she was at work on her break "eating some organic health food bullshit from Rainbow Bridge". At that point I felt the need to turn around and give her a dirty look as she quieted down and wrapped up her conversation. I've debated if I should contact the store and complain but I don't want someone to loose her job because of her ignorance and immature behavior. So I will leave it at that and if the employer reads this and wants to contact me they can feel free to do so. read more

This is what I preach when it comes to small local sustainable grocery stores. The store is decent size, good produce, prices, well they are and should be more expensive than the typical big chains. Remember when you are going to these stores, not only are you paying for the produce, but you are also paying for the quaility and the ethics behind the the produce! The Deli, amazing selection, good place to pick up lunch, it reminded me a lot of a Natural Health store that I use to shop in Santa Cruz (New Leaf). To be honest, I just discovered Ojai thanks to my job, it surely has that hippy bohemian feel to it (atleast part of it). Like the town this store feels fresh, comfotable, small. I will sure stop by here again in my lunch break when I'm in Ojai! Walking and shopping into this store made feel comfortable and happy in this small town. Props to their juice bar too, awsome. And also the mix of deli/grocery store, Oh and props to the nice weather Ojai has, it makes it really hard not to enjoy your food. I am a gluten-free vegan, and totally fell in love with this indie market. The to-go food features a variety of gluten-free/vegan dishes, as well as pastries. Delicious options at juice and smoothie bar as well. Rainbow also carries sooo many gf/v products made by small companies that I had never seen before (like Japanese tea cakes....there's something you don't see everyday). Definitely need to come back alone so I can comb through all of the fun goodies we don't have in LA. Also note that Rainbow carries Kombucha Dog. Great place to come pick up food before/after a hike. Would love to see this market eliminate animal products so I can give it 5 stars :) read more

Service: 2 stars Moved into town 5 months ago and I've always dropped by Rainbow Bridge to pick up snacks before we moved here. It's convenient and close to my house so I figured this will be my new grocer. They have organic produce and everything I need. Unfortunately, every time I've gone, I've dealt with really rude young cashiers. I'm paying a lot of money for my produce, don't throw it around. The last cashier I dealt with rang my produce and threw it to be bagged (which I bagged myself because he's too slow to do it on his own.) No smile, no hello, yawning his brains out. If you hate your job that much, don't work there. You make it look bad for the rest of your team. I've had one good experience with a cashier there who was very pleasant and gave me tomatoes she didn't want to take home that was given to her by another customer. She was pleasant, smiled at customers, she fit into the culture and you can tell she likes her job. Deli customer service is so-so. Produce: 2 stars - hit or miss The produce is overpriced for what it is (yes I get it's organic;) it's organic but in really bad shape. Limp bok choy , too ripe mangoes for $3+, cherries with mold for $12+ a lb, tomatoes that are either too soft or not ripe at all. Food: 4 stars - good variety of everything It's like a mini Whole Foods. Manager/owner: This could be such a good place to shop for people like me that will shell out the money. I know that Rainbow Bridge can reliably fill me up with good-tasting, healthy food. I love their walk-up deli. I'm vegan and can always find three or four interesting things to try. They invite you to have a little taste of anything in their deli case before you commit to a meal. Their made-to-order sandwiches have fresh tasting ingredients. I was in this store today and saw a woman with a great dane. I said, "you aren't allowed to have dogs in grocery stores." She replied, "it's a service dog." I asked where's the tag and she replied "it doesn't need one." The dog was not wearing a collar and every dog in the California is required to wear a rabies tag and anyone with a real service dog knows that. Then this woman took the dog into the store office. You see, at this food store and restaurant they encourage their employees to bring their pets to work. This is a serious health code violation because dogs carry disease, fleas, ticks. There's a reason for the health code. And if the store violates this health code, what other health codes do they violate? read more

I stopped here while on a trip for work and was delighted by all of their options! That juice and smoothie bar and the deli are amazing! The juice I had was priced right was exactly the boost that I needed to get through my work day! The cashiers and people working at the deli were so friendly and helpful with any questions I had. My friend has a soup and it smelled delicious. It was a curry carrot something, something. I didn't have any, but he said it was really yummy. The store is laid out nicely and is user friendly. Stopped by this grocery store to buy some snacks and wine for our quiet night in Ojai. They gave a reasonable wine selection, as well as a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, cheeses, and other good food for late night munchies. The layout was not the most clearcut, and we circled the store for a while looking for crackers. Also Ojai now has a new policy where bags cost money, so bring your own! Small tip: Do NOT get the chicken liver mousse from the deli section if you are tempted. Later on we realized the primary ingrediant was pork fat. Gross! Should have known! read more

3 stars for the cafeteria food and for the deli staff who is very nice all the time. A bit disappointed they have less vegan options when it comes to hot food...I mean they offer some but the demand for vegan and vegetarian option is huge nowadays and they run out of food quickly and there is nothing else to replace it. Their vegan dishes are so great, vegan gourmet food but unfortunately it's a hit or miss. Last time when I shopped there I was rudely approached by an African American woman clerk who probably had a very bad day. This place is a high-end health food store with a hoppin deli. It is a five-star place if you have money, which I don't! But that is no reason to skimp on the stars... it is great for that category. YUM. I know I'm a granola-girl at heart - I may have been conceived in a Good Earth restaurant (remember those?) but I love me a good 9 grain turkey sandwich! The yum factor was the bread, turkey, red onion, tomato, avocado, sprouts. The guy who made it forgot half the ingredients (weird?) forgetting the exact same items from my friend's duplicate sandwich (more weird?) but a cold Smart Water on a 90 degree day cooled my irritation about that. I live in Ojai and appreciate having Rainbow Bridge Natural Food in town. The employees are always friendly. I've never had a problem returning products if I wasn't satisfied (keep your receipt) if you're not a regular. I enjoy the deli food, especially the new gluten free desserts. And for the most part the deli prices are reasonable and tasty. On Sundays there is a farmer's market across the street. There are many wonderful vendors selling their organic goods and pastries. read more

This isn't for the actual grocery store, but Rainbow Bridge warehouse. I was a big fan of the former manager. He was always very nice and helpful and we shopped there quite often. I dealt with a very rude sales associate today that became very defensive when I asked her ONE question about something that was advertised on the dog food freezer. She reacted harshly and made me feel like an idiot. Not only was she rude, but the product is about 25% more expensive than at another local pet food stores. Needless to say, I was totally burnt by the experience and will no longer buy my dog food at this store. read more

I used to go to this place regularly. In fact, I easily spent between a hundred and two hundred dollars a week there. But I stopped going there for two reasons- it's overpriced and some of the kids they hire have a bad attitude. They were trying to charge $24 a pound for roast turkey until every person that saw the price told them they were out of their mind. So instead of lowering the price, like normal people, they just took it off the menu. I told them you could buy two 10 pound turkeys for $24 but that didn't seem to shame them at all. Well, the final straw what the day I went in there and bought a prepaid sandwich for $6.99. I put $6.98 on the countertop and the chubby little teenager behind the cash register told me that I had only paid $6.95. I made her recount it and she saw that I had actually put down $6.98. So, I guess I embarrassed her a bit and she began to argue with me about the final penny! well, I had a $20 bill but I was not about to take $19.99 in change from this little smart ass. She wouldn't budge. I explained that I had been going there for five years and was a regular customer but she didn't seem to give a damn! She was going to lose my business over a penny! So I kind of loud talked her because she deserved it. She called over the quasi-security douche bag who came over and heard the whole story and then defended her! Need I remind you we were fighting over a penny! Long story short, I never went back there and I was hoping someday I would see the owner on the street so I could him tell my story but I never did, so I thought I would post this review. Wow, I went into Rainbow Bridge and liked it immediately. This grocery store is dedicated to healthy living and it looks like everything in there is organic and non-GMO. I was kindof amazed at their interesting product selection walking down the isles towards the deli. I ordered the soup 'cause I usually don't like prepared food and this soup was the best clam chowder I think I've ever had! I have since tried a few of their other things and everything is pretty good. ALL of their soups are great and the service was good - they had a lot of people there so you didn't have to wait too long - overall.....I'd say the best market in Ojai - hands down. John read more

This man . was rude to a disabled gentleman who grew up and lived in Ojai. Ojai is a small family town.. WE know everyone. If you don't mind bad service administered by rude people who are marginally competent at their job then you'll love this place. Almost everything is way overpriced. All the prepared food I've ever had there was delicious. Most everything is organic. Here are a couple reasons why I only gave three stars. 1) I went there at 1:30 PM in the afternoon for a sandwich. only two choices for bread. they had rye or white buns. Rye and white buns are delicious but I feel if you're running a deli you should have a few more options during lunchtime hours. ( I know this because I've managed several delis and I've never run out of product(.) 2) Most of the workers there do not know how to run your card as a credit card instead of a debit card. I understand they want to charge your card as a debit card that way they don't have to pay credit card fees but that is not my problem, learn to do your job(.) then they like to tell you it's your fault because that's how you want to treat your customers by letting them know they're the problem, right? 3) I used my debit card to pay because I wanted cash back. I was waiting for the machine to prompt me to select cash back. when that didn't happen I asked the lady how I get cashback? she said it was too late. Onto the next customer. OK so you're not gonna give me a hint how I go about getting cashback next time? i have to ask you first? that was nice of you to tell me that. just absolutely not offering up any help or advice whatsoever. How about this? how about we just fire you and replace you with a self-check-out register and then I don't have to deal with any of you mouth breathers! Look...if you live in Ojai, your only other choice is the AMAZING FARMERS MARKET on Sundays. I used to frequent Rainbow Bridge deli, everyday. But they changed. In the past, the pre-made salads had more toppings. Now, it's mostly salad greens, less toppings and you get charged more. We notice, we are not dumb consumers. It used to be organic in the pre-made salads. Look at the label, it is not organic anymore. We notice, we are not dumb consumers. It used to be that the pre-made greens and tofu salad were cheaper than the greens and chicken salad (Same exact ingredients, just the tofu and chicken is different) Why was it cheaper? Because we all know tofu is cheaper than chicken!! They are now the same price. So, for all the vegans, you have to pay the same price as the chicken folks. Not fair. We notice, we are not dumb! I always, always, always have to ask the people in the deli with gloves on to NOT TOUCH MY FOOD WITH THEIR GLOVES ON!" Use the salad tongs. Why?? Because they have touched the door panel to open it, they have touched the buttons on the ticket maker on the previous client's food. They touch tons of other objects and then think that because they are wearing gloves, they can touch my food. Bad training, as it happens ALL THE TIME!! GROSS! We notice, we are not dumb consumers. They ended up with quite a bit of my money, I was there for 3 days, and I went 5 times. The same two or three women worked the counter each time I went and they were super smiley and helpful each time. Even when there was a line. They make juice blends to order. There was a hot line for breakfast (I had a turkey breakfast sausage- just the right blend of juicy and spicy), twice for lunch- couscous salad with tofu and vinaigrette, I wished I gotten a larger portion. Juice blends three times, and giant coconut dream cupcake that was lighter than air and not too sweet. I am SURE that I will never go to Ojai without camping out here as often as I can. read more

Its pretty expensive for what it is...it's an Ojai classic as I remember it being there as a child and it has ABSOLTEULY improved since the 80's and 90's. But the food is just overpriced, and they know they can and will charge those prices for the food because the town of Ojai is small and it's residences would rather dine in Ojai then taking the time to leave the valley. Basically this place is awesome to be in Ojai because they are lazy and don't know any better...sad but true, people. read more
