Wanted to try English breakfast and was looking for a spot in the area and this came up. We were one of the firsts to arrive on a Saturday morning for breakfast but then shortly after the restaurant was busy! The servers were SO friendly and welcoming. We stayed at the Mitre House which offered a free Irish Breakfast from Raffles, a two minute walk from the hotel. I understand, free breakfast, usually good to teenagers who care not about taste or what goes into their body. The Irish Breakfast, awful. The scrambles eggs, tasteless & awful. I only ate the wilted down buttered toast. I mean totally wilted to a thin cracker size. Whatever brand of coffee was sour & dreadful. It had to be Lazzarra or Izzy. Sorry for misspelling. Thankful, I didn't pay for it! No one's meal there for breakfast looked appetizing. It is a restaurant so not everyone is eating free from the hotel fyi. We had a long layover in London and took the train into the city. Since the train goes to Paddington station we looked for a breakfast spot that serves the traditional English fry up we've seen in movies and stuff. We found Raffles on Yelp. It was within easy walking distance from Paddington Station. The restaurants has a nice, easy going vibe and the food was surprisingly inexpensive! Also, all the food and drinks were delicious! Both my husband and I had a huge plate of food with eggs, ham, sausage, mushrooms, tomato and beans! If ever we have a layover again at Heathrow I definitely wouldn't mind coming here again for breakfast. I've had breakfast at Raffles a couple of times, since it was close to where we were staying. The food is okay priced, not too expensive and the menu has quite a few options so there is something for everyone. I just had toast and fried egg with coffee and it was just a perfect way to start the day. During our first visit, our server was a little rude. But our second visit, it was great. Lovely spot with a fantastically delicious full English Breakfast! When I travel, my list for must eat food is as long if not longer than my sightseeing list. A full English Breakfast was obviously number one on my list for London. The sausage and bacon were fresh and tender, the egg full of flavor and vibrancy and was perfectly runny, and the black pudding tasty and soft. The beans were nice and hot, and added a great balance to the dish. I only had a bite of the tomato and mushrooms because I didn't want them to occupy prime real estate for the good stuff. Raffles is just round the corner from where I live, so I go there often. Whenever I have overseas visitors we go, usually for breakfast. My guests are usually impressed. The breakfasts are excellent value, especially the Big Ben and Raffles Special - at around £3.50. However if you want to eat a healthy diet there isn't a lot on the menu that does not include more saturated fat than is good for you, at least as regards hot meals. We wanted to go to another restaurant nearby but it was sadly closed (evening). We got talked into going in by some male waiter. Boy do I wish we hadn't bothered! It was busy but, we waited more than 20 minutes ( there is only 1 chef, but not customers prob) for the whitebait, which was fine (not difficult to get right). My partner's Salmon was sent back twice for being undercooked and there was little sauce with it. Of course they really scorched it the third time! My King Prawns were served in a shell with only rice and some kind of Bolognese sauce! The Tiramisu was really really average. With two soft drinks 40 quid ridiculous! Also service charge of 10% poor! Disappointing really. read more
