The end of a looooong work week, a post work G&T catch-up with a friend in Fitzroy, which thankfully turned into a visit to Radhey Kitchen and Chai Bar. After a week of hectic work ickyness, this 8-ish week old addition to the Brunswick Street eateries provided a very chilled atmosphere, with a vegetarian / vegan menu to soothe the savage vegetable eating beast. It's a grab a menu, sit down and peruse, head back to the counter to order affair (I am a little bit of a fan of this 'self serve' type of ordering). I ended up selecting the Shepard's Pie, which was truly yum with its spiced green lentil base, and sweet potato topping, complete with gravy goodness! I chose the carrot and beetroot salad as a side, laced with with tahini at the recommendation of staff. It was a very good recommendation! (thank you clever staff person!!) My dinner companion chose the Tandoori Tofu Burger, which consisted of a seared tofu steak on a Turkish bun with vegan mayonnaise, served with either chips or salad. While I didn't sample said burger, there was high praise from the other side of the table. My Shepard's Pie reminded me of the deliciousness that I so dearly miss from my Sydney Govindas days (Hare Krishna run restaurant in King's Cross - go there & grab some food and a movie in their upstairs cushion strewn "theatre" if you ever get the chance). My only Radhey regret: I was too full post Shepard's Pie to sample the chai and delicious looking desserts on offer. As a Taurean, I am embarrassed to admit that, but, this fact doesn't detract from the joy at having found my replacement Govindas in one of my favourite Melbourne suburbs! I can't wait to head back to work my way through the menu...now, if only I could convince the proprietors to start showing movies there for lounging on the floor on cushions post eating inclined people, I would be in dining out heaven! read more
