This place is certainly one of the more popular of Melbourne's coffee shops, though when I was here it wasn't anywhere near as packed as I have heard that it can become. Great coffee! If you're not living in the area, its worth the trip over. I've not eaten there yet but I do hear great things. They roast their beans on site. The space itself is quite large and has a very funky ambiance. On weekend this place is packed with people brunching and revelling in the amazing coffee. The food is quite costly to what im used to (im from the western suburbs so food is usually cheaper here to begin with). However, the atmosphere is very nice and lovely. The food was quite good and i would totally love to go back again to try their other dishes they have to offer. (I got the salmon with scrambled eggs toast thing) The first time i was kinda confused because i wasnt sure i have to walk up to the counter to order or wait because while there was staff, they would sometimess just stand at the door. However, the staff are friendly and usually helpful. I love how you can scan a code to see pictures of the dishes. It really takes the guess work out. read more

Not usually a fan of coffee stores that do not offer jumbo cups of coffee but I must say the coffee was made to perfection and exactly as ordered. The store provides good tunes, amazing creamy coffee, good tunes and limited indoor seating. Overall a great experience if it provided jumbo cups it would be a five star rating. read more

Never really been disappointed by Axil, I have been coming here for a few years. Good coffee, good food, good atmosphere. We had a late breakfast or, if you prefer, brunch at Axil a few weeks ago - My thoughts?... Not bad... Now, I've given Axil 4 stars although I have to admit that my rating (for now) is really based on the staff and level of service as well as the interior layout and setup... for you see, my Bircher Muesli wasn't that great.. Actually, it was quite bad really and, no matter how much I hate seeing food go to waste (I literally clean up my plate!), I couldn't finish it and I ended up having half of my partner in crime's Frozen Yoghurt (thumbs up to her!) which was brilliant - so good! Our waiter was great, attentive, nice and very friendly. Another thing I like about this place it's that, if you feel like trying a different cup of coffee than sticking to your usual flat white or latte, they'll help you with that as well. The interior is an open plan and I love that. It gets quite noisy when it fills up but it's still ok and doesn't get really bad to the point where you can't hear yourself talking. Come on people, could you possibly cram any more coffee credibility in to this place? With no less than five first place barista championships amongst them, these guys know what they're doing. Opened earlier this year by coffee power couple Dave and Zoe Makin, this place brings quality coffee to the 'burbs. If you're lucky Australia's current Barista Champ (Matt Perger) will make your coffee... or at least give you a smile and a wave from behind the glass window as he roasts. Two coffee machines work overtime to cater to the groups of Mum's with prams (mornings), suits (workday lunches) and Uni students (late afternoons when lectures are over). Saturday's and Sunday's are chockas so I tend to come here on weekday afternoons to get some work done and sink a couple of coffees. The daily filter is a great way to be exposed to different single origins and the coffee geeks behind the machines are happy to chat about what's on offer. Rather than brunch, came here for a rather late lunch (almost 2pm) on Sunday. Sat outside so that we didn't have to wait for a table, but as friends started to trickle in one by one, tables inside became available so we were asked by the courteous wait staff if we wanted to move. By this stage we were comfortable outside so we stayed put. I ordered a latte to start and as much as I really wanted to try their red velvet pancakes, I required something savoury and substantial this late in the day, so I went for the Philly steak sandwich. Coffee wise, it was average. I normally order a latte so in comparison to everywhere else I go, it was decent but nothing to write home about. I was really excited about the steak sandwich with 12 hour smoked beef brisket and had pretty high expectations. The shoe string fries that came with it were really amazing, but the meat was not the kind of melt-in-your mouth beef brisket that I was hoping for. I'm not sure if it was because we were sitting outside, but it got cold very quickly (actually it wasn't piping hot to begin with). Flavour was subtle, and it was filling, but it was a bit plain jane. Perhaps the pancakes would have been more memorable, will have to try it next time to find out! read more

The standout element of Axil Coffee Roasters for me was not the food, the coffee, or the design of the place but the quality and organisation of the service. There was a large number of staff and everyone knew exactly what their role was and how to carry it out with a smile on their faces. My brother ordered the savoury French toast which was unfortunately unacceptable and left on his plate. For some reason they used a fresh sourdough bread and very lightly brushed egg wash over it. It was all wrong. Normally I would finish anything that is left on someone else plate but it wasn't even good enough for the dogs to eat (I'm the dog). My dish however was amazing, I ordered the smashed avocado and feta. The feta was hard to tell if it made it on to my plate or not but either way it was really nice with mint, pepper and lemon also in the mix. Not blown away but I would still come back. read more

Axil had some really consistently good coffees and provide a range of options from the blends to how they make it. However, the hot chocolate is not super rich and a little sweet. The breakfast menu is also packed full of options, and looking at other diners, I would have liked to try the red velvet pancakes. In the end, we settled for baked eggs and the waffle special. The eggs were baked well, and was a generous size. But I think it could have done with more toast. The waffle was a relatively small serving, but beautifully presented. We're moving offices at the day job mid year and we'll be literally next door to Axil. Words cannot describe how excited I am to be close to all the good coffee, hipsters, beards, sleeve tattoos, fabulous coffee and decent lunch options. There were only so many white bread sandwiches one could eat at Hawthorn Village. Variety is excellent. Axil is known for coffee and they do a good soy latte here. The cakes and sandwiches are drool worthy and feature quirky combos. My personal favourite this week is the roasted pumpkin, halloumi and dukkah one - it is literally utopia for your taste buds. I cried a little bit when I ate my first one. Combine this with friendly service, wide open space with lots of warm tones and a buzzy vibe, I suspect I will spend more time at Axil than hanging out around the water cooler at work. Excellent coffee! These guys know what they're doing behind the coffee machine. Everytime I go, I ask the wait staff for a different type of coffee for me to try (they have alot) and they never disappoint. Lovely spacious interior with plenty of tables to enjoy a caffeine hit with friends or just with the Sunday paper. A small range of coffee beans and coffee products are also available for sale. Sitting in the shadow of the brilliant coffee is the food. A tasty selection of dishes for breakfast or lunch are available, which are wonderfully presented. read more

It has a cult-like following, but as an aficionado of all food originally designed to be consumed before noon (though often in the afternoon by me) I've found Axil to be fairly underwhelming. There, I've said it. The space is a big turn-off to me. It's large, cavernous and LOUD. Good luck trying to carry on a conversation in your "inside voice" here on any given weekend. Alas, need to a do the obligatory morning-after-breakfast? Look no further- you won't need to say much, and you could even mispronounce your dining partner's name and they won't even notice. Axil has been on the 'must get there' list for so long and finally I got around to it, mainly due to my stubborn declaration of "WE ARE GOING HERE TOMORROW, YOU HAVE NO OTHER OPTION". Even though it was Sunday, we only waited 15 minutes for our table and the coffees joined us shortly afterward. The long black was perfect, with a beautiful hit of crema and just the perfect temperature. The food order was taken pretty quickly, but from here it went down hill a little bit. We ended up waiting 40 minutes for a smashed avocado and bacon and scrambled eggs. Which was slightly upsetting when we were watching other tables near us arrive, eat and leave all before we had eaten. Being ravenous made it worse. I appreciate it was Sunday but it was a little too long to wait. Our table had the one globe that was out in the building which we decided was the cause of the delay, because they couldn't see us. So for this factor, I take away 1 star. Despite the wait, I was still dazzled and I look forward to going back and playing in their cupping lab and smashing more lovely coffee. This up to the minute cafe in hawthorn has the now familiar potted hanging greenery in a lofty industrial space and a young vibe. Coffee is excellent and our lunches today well prepared and generous. The crushed avo and feta on sourdough was enough to keep you going most of the day! I had the fritters, zucchini,sweet corn etc on the bottom of a stack with avo, a poached egg and garnished with shards of sweet potato crisps. The menu has a fair range of meat and vegetarian dishes mostly with a poached egg and a few desserts and other breakfast offerings. Good value for the quality and volume. Axel is visually stunning. Open like a huge dining hall on the left, with what must be a 15 - 20 meter bar on the right as you walk in. It's assuring to have a reliable cafe near uni. Being the Christmas weekend, very few places were open so Axil was jam packed on this particular Sunday Morning. After a 15 minute wait we tried the new summer menu: potato rosti with extra smoked trout and pulled pork and jalapeno poppers. We were more impressed by the drinks here than the food. Great coffee and a solid breakfast offering, Axil is one of the best breakfast/coffee places in Hawthorn, offering an all day breakfast and seriously good coffee. A bonus is the size, it's quite a big space so the wait is never too long. Staff are efficient getting everyone seated and a round of coffees on the table and they're never too far when you're ready to order and food arrives quickly. I have been here many times and never waited too long for anything. The menu is solid, not blow your mind awesome. I haven't eaten lunch here yet, it's impossible for me to turn down a smashed avo, I am working on it.... The only complaint I have comes from listening to people I take there for breakfast - the menu is a little limited for those after something light or vegan, eg no fruit salads. They seem to excel at sweet breakfasts if that's your thing. My breakfast recommendations are the smashed avocado and corn and haloumi fritters. read more

On a hunt for a good decent coffee and breakfast we hopped on the train and headed into Hawthorn and this place did not disappoint at all. The coffee was amazing and perfect. Breakfast I had the pumpkin seed toast with haloumi cheese, bacon and manchengo cheese potato croquettes - which were amazing. Partner got the zucchini, corn and haloumi fritters with poached egg, avocado, spinach and relish. Such an amazing atmosphere in this place - definitely a place we will return to when we come back to Melbourne :) read more

I should start this review by saying I've only ever been to Axil for brunch and on a weekday. With this in mind, I can't really comment on things like the service (it's been great for me, but it's not much of a test when it's relatively quiet, non?), waits for a table, accuracy and consistency of dishes, etc. That said, my heart beats just a little quicker when I think of Axil. As you'd expect of a coffee roaster, the namesake beverage is fantastic. Perhaps more importantly though, is their menu, which bothers to articulate gluten free options. When you visit (and you'd better) be sure to order the zucchini hotcakes with harissa paste. It's the sort of dish you'll be thinking of for days to come... read more

Famous but coffee-wise not impressive. Very busy during holidays thus do not expect good service. I was suggested a couple of cafes during my visit to Melbourne. This appears in the list. Tried Long Black and Espresso yesterday and today. Long Black is obviously fruity and acid in a good way. However, Espresso took me five minutes to wait that even the couple behind me got their take-away coffee. And it's NOT good. Barista said it was 'different line'. But I completely don't understand what 'line' could make espresso longer time than other coffee on a same espresso machine. read more

If Axil is not the best cafe breakfast in Melbourne, then they must be damn close. I've had some great breakfasts in Melbourne's many fine cafes, but nothing has come close to Axil. Coffee is also of a very high standard and would also be considered amongst Melbourne's best. Although 7 Seeds, Deadman Esspresso, the Vertue of the Coffee Drink and St. Ali would rate higher for mine. That said, Axil's food is so amazing that I would put it ahead of the others mentioned above for overall experience, which I guess makes it the best Cafe in Melbourne IMO. Love Axil. read more

Axil is my go to place, when I don't know what I want, when j want a full meal or just a coffee, when I've got visitors in town or meeting up with people. Though it's a bit noisy, it simply emphasises the quantity of people constantly wanting to eat and drink in there. The ever rotating coffee selection means you'll always try something new and it's helpful that their barista is well trained and educated in the different styles and regions of coffee. All ingredients in food are of the finer quality and the fritters are definitely an all time favourite. read more

BUT, hands-down the worst gluten free bread I've had in years. Thick, dry, crumbly and sad. I have been g-free for 11 years, and have choked down some pretty shitty bread over that time... this is one of the rare ones I just won't eat. There is delicious GF bread out there, Axil - please change it up! I hurried down to the new arrival about 3 weeks after it opened as all good Melbournites do storming to the 'latest place/next big thing'. I can only review on what I got and no doubt I need a revisit looking at the reviews below, or maybe I'm just a little harsh here. Coffee, yes it's good but I debate the best in Hawthorn, I think Life on Mars has that one well and truely covered. I have been back to Axil a few times for the coffee on the way through to Bed Bath and Table, could you think of a better way to spend a lazy Sunday?! :) The food was not even a little bit good, it was actually terrible. The pancakes were hard but yet still limp if it's even possible to do that to a pancake. The portion was way too small and the icecream melted well and truely as we asked for our coffee a third time (food before coffee, what's that about?) So it seems Axil has lifted its game and to be fair, all cafes should be allowed a period of grace when it comes to service. But, after all, we are in Hawthorn and there are certain expectations when it comes to brunch. Next time Axil, next time..... read more

A busy noisy place. If you go as a twosome the enthusiastic floor staff will head you off from a four seater table as "..they are expecting a rush of parties of four any moment..". Yet they never arrive and the 4 seater tables remain largely empty whilst everyone is crammed around the edge of the room on the two seater tables.
