Sir Charles is a gorgeous space and a great new addition to Melbourne's cafe scene. I was originally lured here by the promise of some asian-fusion breakfast and the menu didn't disappoint, with a good mix of options and promise of homemade sriracha included. On this occasion, I didn't actually try these option...my sweet tooth got distracted by their hotcakes. Delicious ricotta hotcakes with honeycomb cream and fresh fruit, perfect portion, not overly sickly or crazy. They are also a coffee roastery and have both espresso and filter coffee on menu. I went for the COE on filter, tasty but not the best in the area for that higher price point. The space itself is gorgeous and as others have mentioned, huge. Filled with white, mint and copper finishes - it sets a relaxing tone for an early Sunday morning breakfast...but no doubt this place would get popular during peak times.

Sir Charles has come a long way since it first opened nearly two years ago, undergoing a major renovation in early 2016, but has remained true to its sophisticated modern charm and Asian fusion-inspired cafe cuisine. Located on bustling Johnston Street, the cafe has no shortage of Fitzroy foot traffic and street views from its footpath seating. The interior, however, is where the magic happens with a large open space that just keeps on going. Formerly a bagel bakery, the space is filled with small tables, large tables, benches and booths with the bar and counter at the front and the kitchen at the rear. A glass walled room halfway along one side houses the roaster that churns out the house blend and single origin coffees. Hanging light bulbs, white walls, polished concrete floor, light timber and copper furnishings and a scattering of pot plants and hanging baskets all combine to create a clean and modern, yet homely atmosphere. The food menu caters for breakfast and lunch dining with all the usual suspects, but with a difference. The popular signature dish is the Sir Charles Benedict, a take on the classic eggs benedict. Panko crumbed eggs, sriracha hollandaise, bacon and fresh chilli on a bed of roti bread. Creamy, spice, crunch, it has it all. There is a variation with added smoked salmon rillette and spinach also available. Other highlights include the Raspberry ripple porridge, "Ms Carter's Waffles" Belgian waffles, Cauliflower, chickpea and kale fritters and the Korean Fried Chicken burger. Coffee is roasted in-house with espresso and filter options. Soy, almond and coconut milk are available. Tea is by Larsen and Thompson. Sir Charles is fully licensed with a range of beers, wine and cocktails on offer. Although renovating early on in its journey may have seemed odd, it has been for the best and Sir Charles is as busy and popular as ever.

I was excited to check this place out, some Grenada and I made our way over to the excellent brunch end of Brunswick street with mouths watering and coffee levels dangerously low. Occupying the former average bagel store the interiors are bright and fresh with nice lights, decorations and splashes of color. Our coffees arrived and they were greedily gulped down. Very tasty. We were very happy to find a all day breakfast menu with some great looking options (with plenty of nice vegetarian things to choose from!). We went with the corn fritters and also the jalapeño poppers. After a little wait the poppers arrived with an apology that the fritters were on their way. The cafe was almost empty so we are still wondering why they couldn't come out together. Maybe 5 minutes later we got the fritters. We were both disappointed in the portion size for the prices and neither meal was large or filling but they were very tasty. I would go here again for coffee but with so many fantastic brunch places in the area I hope they pick up their game and offer more bang (or poppers) for your buck.

A few people have told me to visit sir Charles for the eggs Benedict. One guy even told me that he took all his interstate friends and business contacts to brunch at sir charles just for the eggs Benedict. Touted for its eggs benedict, I had to get some. So I worked extra hard at the gym before meeting up a dear colleague at 10am for brunch. Lots of free parking on a Sunday. Don't have to wait in a queue though staff can fail to notice that you're standing there and waiting to be seated. Not noisy at all and quite spacious. So definitely go there in small or large groups and you can have a lazy brunch and chat and actually hear your companions. There is a delicious selection of doughnuts and cookies at the front counter. A large chalk board displaying all the coffee blends. The menu comes with an additional weekend specials menu that varies from week to week everything on the menu looked so good that it was a pity that I went with just one other and that we could only try two dishes. We got the salmon eggs benedict which comes with roti, burnt chilli, salmon rilette, two Panko crumb coated poached eggs doused in hollandaise. The entire combination was delicious. It also comes with some charred lemon. The lemon juice squeezed onto the deliciously poached egg oozing out golden heavenly yolk with extravagant soft tender flavored salmon combined with soft roti is just a dish with so many delicate flavours balanced together. I could even taste the burnt chilli in each mouthful. So sublime! I want to make these eggs but how do you fry poached eggs to get the crispy panko layer without cooking the yolk inside? Gastronomy!!!! The scrambled eggs with roast cauliflower, miso flavours and sesame seeds on toast were another story of matches made in the kitchen. I could taste the delicate miso, the creaminess of the eggs, the bite of each sesame seed, and the crusty but soft enough to cut through toast. Ermagerd - this place is fantabulous! I want to eat the entire menu but also the eggs Benedict over and over again. In contrast, the coffee was awful. I think cafes that have a sign showcasing six coffee blends to choose from should offer the customer these options within the coffee menu and ask them if they want their coffee strong, acidic, creamy etc. Mine tasted awful. Acidic. Strong. But awful. Service is quick and staff are friendly. :)

Such a great spot! Food had a unique twist on good old standard breakfast/brunch options. Service was lovely but did had to call out a couple of times to get extra. Music was prob a little loud to hear each other talk across the table. Good coffee and plenty to choose from. We were 3 girls having brunch and loved it!

My first visit to Sir Charles was just a short one, since I only picked up coffee, which was very good. On my second visit, I was there for breakfast. We ordered the porridge and the granola and when the food arrived, we couldn't believe our eyes how beautifully arranged our food was. And when we took our first bites we knew that it wasn't just beautiful, but also very delicious. A+ for the kitchen staff! On my third visit (a day later) we only ordered the porridge because we were in a hurry - same experience like on the day before. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a nice and tasty breakfast / brunch.

First visit to new kid on the block Sir Charles. They have made great use of the space the Bagel Shop left behind with a cooper/pine/white fit out. Flat white passed the sugar test with flying colours (one teaspoon then watch how long it takes to sink through the "head") the menu was a surprise (I was thinking Sir Charles = English style breakfast) no so - more Malaysian/Indian fusion takes on typical dishes. This isn't the place to come for eggs and bacon. I had the miso scrambled eggs and my partner had the open omelette. Both were delish with a light spice kick. They had some great Sunday morning tunes on as well. Service was attentive with a grin. They also do lunch and small plate style dinners.

Everything we ordered come out better than what we expected. It was unique combinations and rarely seen in any other brunch places. The roti was awesome, authentic asian roti. The hollandaise was not too spicy, just enough give extra punch flavour on the dish. The eggs was deep fried but still runny inside. It was an awesome experience. One of the best asian fusion brunch place in Melbourne by far. The let down was the service was really slow every time I went in on weekends, it takes a long time for them to bring coffee and tea to our table. It also takes a long time to get water or the bill. To justify, it was indeed a busy day but they clearly need more people.

In addition to taking care of your insides, Feast of Merit is also a YGAP initiative, which means all profits are put back into youth and leadership projects locally and in third world communities. It's feel-good food with a feel-good outcome. The space is large and airy, the perfect place to unwind over breakfast, lunch or dinner. I came for breakfast, but it appears they've got a few beers on tap and a bar so I am keen to check out their evening offerings. For breakfast I was torn between their 'Yeusli' (Organic puffed quinoa, chia seeds, activated buckwheat, figs, goji berries, pomegranate seeds, coconut flakes, almonds, currents, raw cinnamon, your choice of milk on the side) and one of their incredible looking smoothies. I opted for the Yeusli and had no regrets. Delicious, super-charged with raw food goodness and a reasonably-sized, filling portion. No overload of oats and yoghurt like most cafe muesli offerings. Normally I don't give 5 stars if the coffee isn't amazing, but I loved the different food offering and concept enough to bump it back up. Coffee is totally fine but the black coffee is not amazing. If you're a latte drinker you probably won't notice at all and there's the bonus of being able to choose different milks if you're not into soy or lactose. The staff were friendly and accommodating, all menu items were well priced and can feed you for $15 or less. Winner.

But the one of the biggest lessons I learned was that Australia's coffee game is on a whole. 'nother. level. Regardless of where I went to eat or just chill, the establishment would have a ~$6000 espresso machine ready to go. Aunty Peg's, however, was the only place that I saw espresso machines without steam wands. My cousin, Jeremy, told me that they specialize in coffee in it's purest form, and thus, would never need steam wands (since they're never steaming milk). Jeremy and I are both fond of filter coffee, so we both decided to get a flight of V60s. This was a terrible idea. We didn't realized that that meant we would both have to drink ~800 mL of coffee each. Caffeine doesn't really do anything to me, but Jeremy was starting to get jittery by the end of the flight. If you're coming here with someone else, share the flight. However, if you're getting a flight of espresso, then yeah, it would make perfect sense to have your own. The flight included three different types of coffee each processed a different way. We tried a single origin, a honey processed single origin, and the gesha. I wish they offered the honey processed coffee for purchase, because that one was my favorite. It was so smooth and tasted like mangoes. The gesha reminded me of an Earl Grey tea, which was a weird since it's, you know, coffee. Regardless, all three of the coffees were delicious. The staff at Aunty Peg's was great too. The barista was laser focused while making the drinks. Once he finished making our flight, he was super chill and fun to talk to. I had a great time here. Everything about Aunty Peg's is what I want to see more of in Oklahoma city. I'm especially glad that I bought some coffee to take home. Try the Humbler, it tastes fantastic!

Many months in the making, the rumour mill has been rife with what was going on at their Collingwood site. Finally it is open, presenting itself in the form of a roastery, cafe, shop, warehouse and training centre. From the moment of walking in the front door the warehouse nature of the venue is apparent with large open spaces. Located directly in front of the door is the front counter with a delicious selection of pastries and cakes, freshly baked upstairs. Next to the counter are the large, ornate, dresser-style shop shelves with a vast array of brewing equipment, beans, merchandise and books for sale. The coffee bar is the centrepiece with a sweeping array of custom single group heads, grinders, filter brewing equipment and what appear to be beer taps. But they're not beer taps in the sense that they pour beer. Pioneering a new technique of cold brew coffee, a local Geelong-based brewery has been enlisted to brew coffee in cold water which is then kegged and poured on tap with the help of some nitrogen. Served in a beer glass to complete the experience, it almost similar to Guinness in body. A delicious apple and raspberry tea cake matched surprisingly well. It should also be noted that this is a black coffee-only cafe, there is no milk available. This has been done to better highlight the qualities of the many coffee beans on offer. Next to the bar are a number of benches with demo brewing equipment for prospective customers to try out with an endless supply of beans. The stars of the show, the roasting machines, are visible further back in the warehouse. It is clear that Aunty Peg's is all about bringing quality coffee and its origins and various brewing techniques closer to the general public. A must visit for anyone interested more in coffee or just to taste some good coffee and tasty cakes and pastries. But above all else, visit for the cold brew.
