Brunetti on Lygons St. in Melbourne Australia is amazing. The food are very authentic Italian and the pastries are delicious. You walk in and order your food at the cashier and you go and get a table. When the food are ready, they will bring them to your table. They are very busy even for lunch. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

This is a busy and robust bakery with pastries for days and delicious breakfast and lunch options, gelato and so much more! It was well worth the carb indulgence. I visited twice while visiting Melbourne this month!

We were looking for somewhere different for dessert but being Australian Day, pickings were slim. A friend suggested Brunetti, a massive Italian cafe, that does a bit of everything (pizza, coffee, gelato and every type of cake/macaron/pastry imaginable). Too many things in my opinion but the masses would disagree with me. They have two other locations (Flinders Lane and Myer). We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 9:00pm) and the place was packed. Apparently, this used to be a bookstore; the inside is enormous. We checked out all the displays but decided to stick with gelato (located all the way in the back). There's 21 flavours to choose from and yes, they have sorbet (5 flavours). There's a continuous line but it moves quickly. They even let you sample a few flavours although with some attitude. - Cashew & fig ($4.70 AUD small cup) - I wasn't overly impressed with my samples so I winged it and went blindly with the cashew & fig. Turned out to be a good choice. Good bits of real fig mixed in. Cashew had a nice creamy texture, almost caramel like. - Tirimasu ($4.70 AUD small cup) - B's choice which I tried. It tasted pretty artificial and fake. Way too sweet. Don't get it. - Black sesame ($4.70 AUD single cone) - I sampled this flavour and it was actually quite close to real black sesame. - Strawberry sorbet ($4.70 AUD small cup) - my dad wolfed this down. Decent but not good enough to come back for round 2.

This gigantic Italian place has a rather industrial but nonetheless appealing atmosphere, and a busy location. I came for the gelato, which was tasty enough. Oddly, the tiramisu flavor cautioned that it was slightly alcoholic, but to be honest the mint flavor tasted more alcohol-y to me (admittedly not my area of expertise). They had an exceptionally wide sorbet selection (probably a third of what they offer). They offer a full menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which I did not try but would have been happy to.

So many choices, so little stomach space

Brunetti is a huge bakery/dessert shop. The display cases were all filled with incredible desserts and I struggled with choosing. A few of the items were marked as gold medal winners and I decided to narrow down my options to those items. After a hard fought internal debate, I finally decide on the cheesecake that won the 2016 gold medal at the Australia food awards. It was a chocolate/Nutella cheesecake. It was very tasty: creamy yet not too sweet. I wish I have multiple stomachs; I would've loved to try more desserts from here.

I had no idea how this place slipped through my radar the last year. This place is mammoth. I was surprised to say the least, walking through the giant doors and trying to absorb all the sugary madness that was before me. It's hard to describe exactly what this place is beyond an institution. Rows of pastries, cakes and canollis - oh my! Then came the bar and the deli section with its shelves of pizzas and sandwiches. The seating also went back for miles. It was hard to know where to begin. Thankfully I remembered I was here for lunch and proceeded to the counter to order. After placing your order and paying for it at the main counter, you go to another counter to pick up your drinks and wait as your food arrives, most likely dishes will arrive separately as they are ready. We got a veggie pizza and risotto with prawns and mushrooms. The risotto was divine in buttery goodness and loads of mushrooms along with giant butterfly prawns. The pizza was also delightful, loaded with cheese and the right amount of toppings for a thin, Italian style pizza. The wine was a bit average but for the price, I wasn't expecting Italy's finest. My dining companion went for a post-lunch gelato. It was refreshing and tasty. Somehow I managed to pass the dessert counter and multi-display cases again on my way out and promised myself something decadent next time. There will definitely be a next time! Oh Brunetti, you have got me good.

How can you not love Brunetti? They churn out coffees at super speeds and fabulously consistent quality, the cakes are as Mathan described "magical," the entire place is a real treat. To top it off, they are open until midnight most nights I believe, which suits me great as I have Neon Syndrome. There isn't a lot to say that hasn't already been said by others, so just take our word for it and try it out, it's so Melbourne and it's worth it.

Brunetti ... you are just evil. Now I have to go work out some more for all that I have consumed from you. Just kidding. I can see why this place is bustling. The amount of dessert choices are just...ENDLESS.. LITERALLY. I mean how much cakes or sweets can you really take? And not to say how much can you prepare to sell in one single restaurant? ALOT. The display shelves goes one end to the other starting with Gelato on the left and in the "restaurant" session. And spread all across to the left filled with macaroons, pie, tarts and cakes, and popsicle, and puffs and whatever you name it. It was eye opening for me from a point of view of a visitor to Melbourne. I surely enjoyed my visit. I have shared 3 items among a group of 4. They are mostly delicious, one more then the others. Rum ba ba cream- definitely with cream over the non cream. Oh and my favourite of all. I am actually not a fan of cream and yet I think it was a good balance of the rum with the cream in it. It has a moist texture, yet not soggy , and with strong rum. *tip: don't squeeze out all the rum from the tub just because it's there. I got way too excited and it was too strong for me. Haha. Semifreddo bacio- sort of like a Nutella mousse with macadamia nuts. It's rich and nutty. Not too sweet but hard to finish a full jar of it. Lemon meringue tart- love the flamed top , but lack of lemon flavor. Would not order this again. Its not bad, but with the amount of choices will rather try something out. The cafe and dessert area is a self serve area, grab a table. Take a number and wait for your turn to order your items and carry over to your table. As much as its mostly self serve, the servers are still very helpful and nice to us when ordering and cleaning up. Would recommend visitor to Melbourne for a trip of sweets!

This is dessert heaven! The display case goes on and on and on with one gorgeous thing after another! It's hard to choose! You should decide what you want first, then take a number from the middle of the display. They have everything from massive cakes to generous slices to small half-size tarts and cannoli and eclairs. (This means you can get lots of different things without feeling guilty. I figure 3-4 littles is about one regular size slice. Heh heh.) There's a separate counter for savory items, which smelled amazing. And then gelato all the way in the back. After you've paid, find a seat. It's a popular spot so expect it to be loud and though there is tons of seating, during peak times, it can be tough to find a spot. Coffee is definitely not their strong suit - better to stick with pastries and a glass of wine.

Brunetti is known for their great cakes and desserts and is well worth a visit. The store is bound to make anyone who appreciates a good dessert to drool. You walk past several refrigerators full of cakes as you enter the store from Lygon St before coming to their cake, cookie, and pastry display cases. There's a huge variety to choose from -- the biggest problem is likely to be selecting which of the many delicious items to buy. In addition to their cakes, pastries, and biscuits, they also make good coffee, they serve gelato, and they even have a full food menu at the back of the store. I will say that I'm less of a fan of the Lygon St location compared with the previous Faraday St location. They have done a decent job of outfitting the new location, but the building doesn't have the same character.

Best melbourne cakes in town!!! Go to the Lygon place for more variety of cakes! Yummy!!

TIR-A-MI-SU! Really, I shouldn't need to say anything else. But I will. Brunetti's is the mortal enemy of dieters and diabetics alike. There are oh so many sweet, rich, chocolaty cakes here there's bound to be something for everyone's sweet tooth. The cakes are beautifully presented, like little sugar-filled sculptures. They also do savory food and, of course, an excellent cup of coffee. The buzz from Brunetti's dominates Faraday Street, with the outdoor seats are packed late into the evening with families and luuurvers enjoying a post-dinner treat. I know Carlton has an awful lot of 'institutions', and this is one of its most deserving. Don't miss it.

Epic cake shop. For coffee and a treat or your next birthday party, Brunettis is an institution that you can't go past.

It has an amazing atmosphere. I recommend just coming for a coffee and a desert instead of the mains which are good but can be overpriced.
