Rack It guy's was able to help me pick out what I needed, install and provide tips on the bike mount care and usage. Really solid customer service. Great products. I went to Rack-it to buy ski racks and support a local shop I have used a couple times in the past. The front street parking is now a bike lane so no more front street parking. I talked and the employee who answered said to pull around back, and I explained what I needed. So i pulled around to the back and found their open roll up. All their shop neighbors were closed and the back parking lot was completely empty. I stopped in front of the open door as rack it person will need to measure my existing crossbar with cargo carrier already installed to figure out what ski racks will fit with the cargo carrier. The employee came out and started endlessly scolding me about parking infront of the open roll up door, which had no car inside or anyone in the lot. He was having a bad day I guess. He then showed me the perfect ski racks for my setup and said they are retail priced and never on sale, which is not a problem except for his bad attitude. I ended buying that same set for 120$ less on autoplicity and they work great. Attitude is everything, pick a good one. read more

This is a WONDERFUL, family owned business!! My experience began when I called them and explained what I was looking for. Brian was incredibly resourceful and thorough with his explanations. The next day I walk into the shop, and am welcomed by lovely individuals who demonstrated utmost patience!! And then I found out they're all family, which explains why they're so committed and invested in making sure customers have a great experience. They installed a bike rack for me and explained everything to me, every step of the way. When I say they were patient with me, I mean they were PATIENT. Solid, Solid, SOLID!!! 8 Months ago, after punching out my windshield for the 2nd time putting my longboard inside my car, I decided to finally bite the bullet and get a surf rack. I asked around and everyone recommended Rack-It and I made plans to visit them. Then Covid hit and I became this hermit surfer who only ventured out of my house to ride waves everyday and then retreat back into the safety of my man cave (aka my house in La Costa), all the while avoiding contact with people ala Instacart, amazon fresh, Uber Eats, et al. This month, after a 4 hour surf session, tired me throws his surfboard into his car and BAM, I done punched out my windshield for a 3rd time! Argh! Out of despair (and my screaming spouse) I finally called Rack-It. The guy who answered was super nice and professional. He explained my options, quoted a very reasonable price, and I made an appointment. Rack-It is one of the very few stores I've personally visited since the quarantine and I was happy to see that they have a sign on their door requiring masks and all of their staff was wearing them. Writing up my order was touchless and the interior of their store was spotlessly clean. Everyone there was also very friendly and helpful and they thankfully enforced social distancing with their customers. They seriously know their products here and give you honest quotes, expertise, and service. In under an hour my new surf rack was installed! What impressed me most was that they took they time to review ALL of the essential components and details of my new locking surf rack and patiently answered all of my questions. This place specializes in vehicle, floor, and wall mounted racks to hold or transport bicycles, kayaks, and other recreational equipment, and also carries or can order replacement parts for racks you might already have - and I was able to get from here what I could not find at other places. But I also now need to advise others to carefully double check and verify ALL the parts needed, ordered, and received. I had to order and pay twice to get what I needed - and even then, twice didn't get what was expected after waiting almost a month for replacement parts to arrive. But they did manage to make what I got work, and that's all I really wanted/needed. read more

Sometimes people forget what it feels like to be around genuine people in business. After calling three places for quotes I decided on Rack It get to roof racks and bars installed on my car. The phone call didn't stand out but mannnnn when I walked in and talked to Brian I was honestly confused at how nice and easy going his enthusiasm was for the more budget friendly products as well as the expensive quality ones. This isn't something you see often enough. Through my obvious indecisiveness and with a hint of "I just want something to do the job" he was patient and open minded. TLDR: loved my experience, paid a pretty penny but was still offered a military discount without asking. I told them my idea and they said they couldnt locate the part I'd need and offered no alternative. I went back in and asked about another idea I had and I was handes a sheet of paper with a quote. Maybe it was the employee but he was not helpful. I very much felt like I was bothering him by asking questions. I then started looking on craigslist and found Custom Road USA. I called and spoke to someone on the phone (sorry i don't remember your name) and he was so helpful. While what I had in mind wouldn't work he offered another suggestion. I drove over there and after getting everything put on I left a very happy customer. I was there for about an hour and I paid about $130 less than what Rack It quoted me. read more

I called Rackit to try to get help to figure out a solution to put racks on my jeep. I explained that I needed to fit some metal racks on top of my car and asked if they could help and surprisingly they told me they didn't have any solutions for me which really makes zero sense~ I asked if I could see ski rack or could I use a crossbar? Could I really use anything where I could then tie racks and the guy kept saying he couldn't understand my question so it really sucks that you're going to lose a possible $1000 sale to help somebody who needs to buy a rack for their car because your sales person is uneducated and unwilling to help that's a great way to lose business. read more

After a very frustrating day at REI trying to find help for bike racks we decided to check this place out. We were greeted by Alex, who suggested a Kuat bike rack. We needed to go home to check something on our bikes. We came back the next day and made our purchase. Alex even helped us load the box into our car. Our experience here was very good. He was professional knowledgeable and was very honest about the return policy. During the visit everyone was wearing a mask and practicing social distance. We felt relatively safe inside the store. Customer service comes a long ways nowadays. I came in on a Friday afternoon 10 minutes before these guys were closing looking for a roof basket. Alex helped me out showed me the different baskets they have. I picked one out which was the Thule canyon xt. Wanted the extension but they were sold out. One of the other workers overheard that I was looking for the extension while he was sitting at their computer and said he had put in a order for them and they would come in next week. He asked me to leave my number so they can notify me when they came in. Got the call on the Tuesday after I came in and picked it up and had them install it on a Wednesday. Made the rack look 10 times better with the extension and it took them less than 40 mins to install. Plus their prices were at least $10 to $20's cheaper then other stores that sell racks and their in stock items are on hand rather than paying and waiting for the order to come in. If it's not in stock they can order it and it'll be available quicker than most. I highly recommend these guys if you're in the San Diego area or if you're just passing through and are in need of cargo or extra cargo racks. read more

Rack-It There is another combination of letters, and of similar sound, that would suffice for a review of this company. But you should know more as to why. Until yesterday, I have been a repeat customer of Rack-It since the mid 90's. I've spent thousands of dollars with them over those years. Last year I purchased a Thule system for my Toyota Tacoma truck. I recently noticed that the base mounts are corroding. Since the racks have a life time warranty, I contacted Rack-It via their web-form; they told me: "I am sorry you are having a problem with Your Xsporter. Thule had a batch of the base pieces that were not powder-coated properly. We have new bases in stock. If you bring in your defective ones we can swap them out for you at no charge. This is not a very common problem. You are only the 3rd person I have seen with this problem in the last few years." So two days ago, I went by the store to pick up the new bases, intending to return the defective ones once I'd made the switch. The young red-haired, mustachioed fellow at the counter refused to allow me to take the replacements without leaving the defective ones. I offered to purchase them, or leave my credit card with an open charge in order to secure the parts until I would return with the defects. Again, "No." I expressed my dismay, that I'd been a customer since the early 90's, etc.. He said he was sorry, but that it's Thule's policy, that they'd had problems with people not returning the defects, and that there was nothing he could do about it. I pointed out that I was HIS customer, that his company had made the profit on the sale, and that - for me, this was not only inconvenient but insulting. Again, "Sorry, it's Thule. Nothing I can do about it." So I replied that I'd like to purchase a set of base pieces. He wouldn't sell them to me. I told him that I would never, ever, purchase anything from Rack-It again, and that I would tell everyone of my experience. He did not seem to care. I would advise everyone not to shop at Rack-It. While their store provides a thorough show room of possible rack solutions, I would advise that you use their facility to determine what you want or need, but to make your purchase online or, better yet, from REI. I called and talked to Aaron who was super extremely helpful after being referred by Black Mountain Bikes. We bought a Yakima Space Cadet used and the guy didn't have the keys. We went to Rack-It Car Racks and the staff there was super helpful. Unfortunately, they didn't have the keys that go to the cores for the rack. They did have cores that we could just switch out for less than $37 dollars which I thought was a deal. I have bought racks from them over the years, and I have had good experiences with them. Their products are a bit pricy, and they try to "oversell" I feel like. I have had good experience from employees in the past, however recently I came in with a question and the man up front seemed annoyed and wanted to hurry me threw. I got the vibe that I was interrupting him, which is not how a customer should feel. I ended up getting my cross bars on Amazon, which was much cheeper than what Rack it wanted, and they seem to be just as good quality. I'll be back, and give them another try, since they have been really helpful in the past. read more

Next door to Karaoke 101 ! All your outdoor toys will have a home on your roof. I found the Inno INA 445/446 SUP/Kayak/ Canoe Locker rack system that can handle 2 SUPs or my one man outrigger canoe. There are so many options here and the staff support is excellent for understanding your needs and matching it up with your vehicle. They also have foam pads for $15 which can give your toys that needed lift on your roof. After I installed my roof system, I had some issues with the screws digging into my roof and when I went back, Brian helped put some extra shims in the system so that it solved the issue. He went back and forth a few times from the the store out to the parking lot so that the brackets were secure. EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. YOU CAN NOT GET THAT ONLINE. He didn't even charge me for the shims he used. This is a specialty shop and it's completely worth checking out so that you can make an informed decision. They have complete floor models of bike racks, canoe racks, ski systems, ceiling mounts, surf board or SUP racks, etc. I called ahead of time to let Brian know the make and model of my car & which system I was interested in so he was prepared to help me when I arrived. read more

We came in to Rack It and spent 1,000 dollars on having them instal surfing racks on my daughters car.The installation was overpriced for sure.My husband returned today to ask for help with our old Thule rack piece that had broke.The fat bearded man who helped my husband was not helpful and rather rude.He told him that there was no way to fix it and that he needed to spend another 400$ on a new one.My husband left and went to REI also in Claremont area.They fixed the rack for no money at all and said they would help us with it any time.REI just gained a customer that will spend money on racks for their four vehicles.Unfortunately,Rack it just lost our business going forward.Rack it better learn some customer service!Someone also needs to inform them that the pandemic is over!Unless Covid is rampant all over the city,the masks are pretty worthless folks.Get a clue. read more

I decided to return for my bike rack and hitch cargo needs yesterday. I'm glad I did. Alex walked me through their inventory. No pressure yet he seemed genuinely eager to answer my questions despite my lack of knowledge in the topic. I settled on the new yakima exo system. Took home the exo base and a double up bike rack. I called regarding wind-fairings for my Yakima Roof Rack, the specialist over the phone by the name of Brian was very easy going and informative about wind-fairing compatibility. I told him I'd come in a little awhile to purchase a wind-fairing. I entered the shop, the guy by the name of Alex at the front desk was very rude.. I asked him about the wind-fairings and told him Brian had told me this and that, and Alex looked at me with a disgusted face and just said no.. no other explanation than a no, I was immediately irritated and normally I wouldn't go out of my way to write a salty review but the fact that one person told me one thing, and I felt invited and welcomed to walk around the shop.. the receptionist just slammed me with a rude welcoming and attitude. So unprofessional, I would not recommend this place. Stick to REI or any other sports stores but please do avoid rack-it. read more

I have been riding bikes since I was ten years old. I have spent thousands of dollars on my equipment. I only went into this store because a friend recommended them. I went into the store twice and both times I was treated as a disease bearing beggar who they don't need as a customer. Both employees were rude and abusive. I am 73 years old I have a doctors letter that says wearing a mask is unhealthy for me. The first time I went in, I agreed to use the face shield that Costco provides me with. After I put on the face shield I was allowed into the store by the manager who was clearly not happy with my reluctance to wear a mask. I saw the product I wanted to purchase. I came back a second time to make the purchase wearing the same shield but this time another employee refused to wait on me telling me to go away and come back with a cloth mask. I told him it would be a cold day in hell before I ever come back into that store. I am going to call the distributor and buy the product direct. The only reason I went to this store is it use to have a good reputation with the biking community. At every bike event I attend I will make it point to talk about how arrogant the employees and owner are in their treatment of prospective customers. My guess is this establishment is going out of business, but just in case I want to urge everyone in the biking community to shop elsewhere. read more

We were referred to Rack It by Holland Bike shop in Coronado. We had been looking for bikes to enjoy while camping, riding to town for short trips, and enjoying our beautiful beaches. We had checked out several bike shops in our quest for finding the right bikes for our needs. In our search for bikes whenever the question came up about bike racks we were told inventory was low. We also asked about what type of bike rack would best fit our Jeep Wrangler and were given very vague replies.. Our salesman at Holland Bikes had the honesty and integrity to tell us he was not sure what rack would be the right fit.
