MJ's Cyclery is an amazing local business. I went in to purchase a mountain bike for my wife, a new modern upgrade to what she had previously. A surprise. The customer service here was amazing! Luke had helped me that day, walked me through all the options, bike geometry, size, etc. I purchased her a Marin Bobcat Trail 3. I surprised her and she loved it. We went back to the shop the next day to have some adjustments made for my wife. Justin helped us on this visit. Same excellent customer service. He took the time to walk my wife through everything, all the features and functions. A technician came over and made all of the recommended adjustments to make her ride more comfortable. At the end of our visit, I also purchased a Marin for myself, and a few comfort upgrades for both of us. Customer service is rare almost anywhere you go, but not at MJ's. They are extremely knowledgeable and are craftsman in their profession. Great vibe, great music, friendly and expert staff! Customer service was lacking big time...went in for a $70 tune up and chain replacement for a quote of $110 and final bill came out to $170+ with no notice of the new work estimate and no phone call to let me know that my bike was ready. Anyone can look up what a "basic" bike service is and Step 1 is cleaning the drivetrain. Owner/Manager criticized my assessment and said that I expected the drivetrain to be "spotless"...please refer to the photos. I was also told a new chain was installed...chain looked exactly the same as the one I brought in. After inspecting my bike thoroughly once I got home, I went back and they installed a real new chain and accused me having some kind of agenda. I clarified all I wanted was the tuneup I had asked for, and communication that my bike was done and that the work they promised had been done...no accountability expressed from anyone in this place. "There must have been a mix up" and my standards for a basic tune up are too high. At the end of it, they gave me a partial refund and said their hundreds of Yelp reviews should speak for itself. I have been here 4 times, they vandalized my bike!!! 1st: Went in to look at the shop for the first time. Sat on a couple of bikes. Thought it was cool and liked the Scott bikes they had. 2nd: Bought a new 75mm stem to shorten the reach. During this time I was talking with Karisa about my bike being a little big, that's why I bought the stem to shorten the reach. I had spoke of other ways to get a better fit but she said not to waste my time or money if the bike doesn't fit. But I was wondering why she said that when they could profit off me buying the parts from them... Also bought a new SRAM 10 speed chain and met the guy who sits at the computer near the service station, forgot his name. I'm not sure but my guess is he runs the place. At first I wanted Shimano as I'm running a Microshift drivetrain but I said I don't have a chain tool so he said SRAM because the quicklink instead of upselling me, I kinda thought that was cool but was ready to buy a tool. So as I was talking to that guy I told him I was having problems throwing my chain. He said "it's almost always a chainring", so I ordered a new one. I was there for awhile looking around seeing what they had and I felt comfortable, maybe that was annoying for them. Spent $130 or so for 2nd visit. 3rd: Went in to pick up chainring from 2nd visit. Everything seemed cool. 4th:Honestly went in this time and I didn't try to talk to Karisa and explain in detail what I wanted. I was just shooting the... I was there to see the guy who ordered the chainring at the service center but they have their channels and maybe this contributed to how they did me dirty in the end. But I did tell her that I'm not here just to get my bike running better, I'm her to get everything replaced that was damaged. After she skeptically acknowledged what I was asking for she took my bike and had me follow her to the service station. She relayed some of what I said to the guy that ordered my chainring. He put my bike on the stand. I started off by saying I would happily like to schedule an appointment if need be because I knew that I was about to ask for a lot. He said no as if I was asking something stupid as my bikes already on the stand, fair enough. He started asking questions about the drivetrain and I said the hanger is bent, (almost not visible with the naked eye) and he agreed and put the tool on it and yeah it was bent. I told him I already took it off and checked it with a flat surface. I spent a long time tuning my bent derailleur and its bent hanger to get my drivetrain running the best I could with no missed gears and as little sound as possible. HOURS across multiple days! So I was ok with it being left until I could replace it (new hangers cost $10) it was gonna be apart of the bid. He offered to straighten it a little, I said "if you want to" because I didn't want to be rude he offered. In my defense everyone knows you can't get them back to perfect, they're designed to bend. He didn't say it was gonna cost me. I should've clarified. I started saying what I wanted, I got to my fork as its carbon and wanted it checked for ring of death and whatever else. He got frustrated, snapped at me and said I'll have to leave the bike because its too much (I tried to schedule it for another day). I know I'M STUPID for leaving it, I really regret it. But anyways I thought they were professional and wouldn't vandalize my bike. When I went to get my bike 2 hours later they didn't do much, the bid had next to nothing on it said the tools didn't fit my fork and wanted they me to pay $20 for bending the hanger. I said I didn't have it and I need my bike back. Karisa said they don't do work for free and I said "he offered to bend it back without saying it would cost and I didn't ask for that". He offered and how can they charge me double what to part costs. IF THEY CHARGE FOR BIDS THEY SHOULD SAY THAT, they don't that's why I only owed for the hanger. The best part is and what I mean by vandalism is that I got my bike back took it outside because I wanted to get out of there and one of my bottle cages was unscrewed and barely hanging on and my front wheel was untrue, both things that were not that way when I brought it in. I know for a fact because I took my bottles off right before I left the bike and I had just rode from Spring Valley to the shop and my wheel was true. They did all that before I had even said I didn't have $20. Ok don't like me but you don't do that! My bike is my car and San Diego has big hills with turns and pot holes that with a true wheel are sketchy. When I turn the rotors rub the pads, I don't even know the full extent of what they did but that should be a crime. I felt bad for not having the $20 but they vandalized my bike and tried to charge me. I had to sit there and adjust the derailleur before riding home because they didn't after they "bent the hanger". I'm close to 70 and when you are my age and are told sorry no restroom even though I spent over 80 dollars you might be pretty indignant. My bicycle needed some basic common service done on it. I brought it in and explained the simple service I needed. Instead of just taking my bike and information, the person helping me started insulting my bike and implying that I did something wrong by purchasing it. He then used this insulting talk to try to upsell me on a new component I didn't want or need. I calmly declined but inside I was extremely upset and wanted to give him the middle finger leave right then. I regret not just leaving, no one should have to put up with that as a *paying* customer. One of the worst customer service experiences of my life. Needless to say I will never be returning. I hope they go out of business. Reply to the owner's comment below: The owner below says they don't remember working with me but I recognize the person that helped me was the guy in the business owner's picture. I guess his name is Scott? It's really sad that this bad experience was with the owner. Do you care about your business? It's a smaller shop, seems to have everything you need! super friendly staff. I was just in to pickup a few things I needed to fix a friends bike. Someone was in there checking out a new marin hard tail and could tell how in depth the employee was going with the details of the bike. Super useful information. The best neighborhood bike shop! I came here in the fall of last year to try to get a bike, but they informed me that since Covid, there has been a shortage of bikes and whenever they get a bike, it sells instantly. They recommended to follow their Instagram to stay updated with their inventory. I stopped by on a whim last month and to my surprise, they had a bike in my size, it just had to be built! I was able to reserve the bike and they called me about four days later to come pick it up! The service here is what sets it apart from other bike shops. Everyone who works here knows their stuff and is extremely kind and willing to help out new or experienced bike riders. I'm so happy I bought my bike here! Love this bike shop. Located right by the iconic Hillcrest bridge, it's a convenient and trusty spot. The guys here adjusted my front tire and wheel to make it a smoother ride. I blew out my back tire last week and finally got a moment to bring my bike in. They gave me the option to go with a new tube and ride out the half worn tire or get a new setup on the back. I went with the new tire. They fixed me up with a $20 new back tire and $7 tube to get my back on the road. Highly recommend this affordable and honest shop! read more

Service folks at this shop were once again great. Asked them to help me replace a cassette that had a bent tooth right in the center cog area (ugh, SO annoying!). It's a SRAM GX Eagle so that means the cassette is all one piece. Cassette price was on par from what I saw online and few bucks more to have guys at the shop do the leg work of replacement. They helped loosen up my wheels without having to up sell me anything extra or charge me extra for the adjustments. Have to recommend these folks as they are kind folks and do look into your bike issues before suggesting any repairs. I have other upgrade plans for my bike so I'll be back at them for their expertise in the future. One CON is their parking spot is a bit difficult. There's a small parking lot (for 8-10 small vehicles maybe ...?) that is shared with other businesses, but seems like it can easily be filled up. Most bike shops close to downtown have about the same problem though, this is San Diego for you! Nevertheless, I personally think it's worth getting them to work on your bike if you want an honest opinion. read more

My normal bike shop on Adams informed me that they will not fix stroller tires anymore??! so I came here on the recommendation of a friend. What stands out for me is the service. No bike-shop snobbery here. These folks know their stuff but don't flaunt it or snub those who don't. Bike shops have been slammed lately and wait times can stretch into weeks.I was so grateful when Chris (?) quickly replaced a slashed tire (thank you San Diego streets) and had me on my way in less than an hour.
