I picked up a bike off of OfferUp and I wanted to get a light and reflector for it so I swung by Cal Coast bicycles. the associate there was a very helpful guy with a hat and a mustache. They had individual reflectors and individual lights out on display, but not a set with both a reflector and a light, it looked they were adding new stock to the floor and he went and found the it in the new inventory. This is my first road bike and the associate was very helpful and provided a lot of great knowledge that I'm glad I have now. He gave me some great info about bike maintenance as well info on lowering my handlebar, which the previous owner had well above the minimum insertion height. The bike I bought was missing a cap on the handlebars and I told him I would purchase one and he just gave me a used one for free, real nice guy will be back, thanks dude. read more

The better perhaps the best bike shop in San Diego. I live closer to Trek in La Mesa - it's crap. Plebeian accessories for average people who like bikes. Service is slow, staff is not nearly as friendly. Cal Coast Bicycles crushes it's competition. Not by fierce sales numbers, but by accessory quality, (ergon, one, sram x01), bike quality, (ibis, santa cruz), team's friendliness, and the perks you get when you buy a bike here. SC and Ibis are $$$$. I dropped $6k on my SC Blur C. However, with any purchase you get 15% off all accessories and apparel for 12 months, and unlimited standard tuneups for the lifespan of your bike. When he took a look at my bike he told me they do not service retail store bikes because the parts are cheap. He recommended Stubborn Goat in North Park and said that they service anything. I come from years of customer service and sales and although every business has the right to service and not service what they choose based on their specialty, I would never tell a prospect or a customer that the product they have is cheap and to go somewhere else. I would have just politely said that regretfully we cannot service this brand of bike and then give a recommendation. I was in need of an MTB in June of 2021. Cal Coast just happened to have the perfect bike for me in-stock at the time (I was hard pressed to find a bike anywhere during the pandemic). We took care of most of the transaction over the phone - they asked me for my measurements and all the measurements off of the bike I already owned so they could do the build to my size specifications. They had a quick turn-around and were even early with the completion. I bought an Ibis Ripmo and still love it. It was just about perfect from the day I picked it up. I've made a few adjustments the past two years, but from the get go they nailed it for me. (The only thing ALL of the bikes shops need is a knowledge of women's bike seats. Riding more than a few miles on the "really nice [mens] seat" that came with my build was awful. Google it ladies - game changer when you've got the right seat for your sitz bones - and I am NOT talking about a big padded seat.) read more

I am compelled to write this review after being yelled at and then hung up on by Charlie following my inquiry into getting the bike that I had purchased there for close to $12,000 serviced. Now I don't know if Charlie is the owner or if he's the manager or if he's just an employee. Frankly at this point it doesn't matter. I called the shop today to inquire about getting my bike a full tune up. I stated right up front that I had purchased and Ibis Ripley from them a couple of years ago and that I needed a tune-up and wanted to know about scheduling. The first thing that Charlie said to me, "We don't schedule, if you drop your bike off today, we probably can have it to you on August 17th." Are these guys kidding me, they want to take my bike for 2 weeks and let it sit in the shop while they work on other bikes?!? It took several seconds for this to register and then I started to chuckle and said "no way dude" and I hung up the phone. If that was the end of the story, I wouldn't be writing this review. However, Charlie felt compelled to call me back and proceeded to berate me and tell me that I was immature and then hung up the phone on me. You know I've recommended this shop to at least 30 or so people over the last couple of years because I was happy with my bike and the service I received. But after this experience, I will never go back to that bike shop, I will never buy another bike from them, I will never ask them to service my bike, and I certainly can never recommend and actually would warn people against doing business with them read more

I went into this shop to get assistance w removing my pedals from my bike as I was having difficulty doing it myself. A simple and quick job! Well they wanted to charge $50-$70 dollars to do it because they couldn't remove them. I knew this was BS! Really pissed me off as they assumed I didn't know anything about bikes! I gathered my bike and took it to the bike shop a few blocks away, on the same street, and Chuck took both pedals off in less than 5 mins! And didn't charge me one cent. I bought a Giant Explore E from Cal Coast a couple months ago. Since then, I've stopped in twice. The first time was for free adjustments after riding 14 times and the second was to tell them how awesome my new bike is. Although they still follow Covid Protocol, they get you in and out fast and are really helpful, friendly and genuinely want you to enjoy your ride. They're also great at listening to you and making recommendations that are actually useful. When I stopped in for the adjustment, I mentioned I had had a flat. I can't think of his name, but he recommended I buy a canister of GUP tire sealant, which I did. Well, I just rode Distance (that's my bikes name :) up to San Onofre State Beach and I woke up the next morning to a flat tire. I got the GUP out and just like that my tire was fixed, filled and ready to go. I didn't buy the bike lock he recommended last time, but I plan to soon. Their prices seem reasonable especially since smaller shops need to markup their products. GUP is actually $1 less through Cal Coast vs Amazon and it's nice to support a local business that pays taxes here and provides jobs. They threw in a water bottle cage when I purchased my bike. This review is about the shop, but my bike, wow! Love it. If you used the battery conservatively, you can go for miles and miles and hours and hours. I highly recommend both: the bike and Cal Coast Bicycles. I don't see myself buying through any other bike shops. read more

I have been a weekend warrior for the most part since 2011. Mountain biking is my shit. I have owned three mtn bikes worth over three grand. My most recent bike isnt worth as much, but it's my first bike I started to tinker with. I fucked up trying to clean my drivetrain and somehow messed up my rear derailleur. Went to some other mom and pop bike shop in Clairemont and they couldn't fix it. Went to a Trek shop and they said I was missing a part. Went to an authorized Specialized shop and they said the same shit. In between gyms closing due to COVID, i decided to have a last go at a shop and see what they could do for me since three other shops said i needed to wait for an entire new derailleur. Cal Coast was this last shop. These guys told me repairs were backed up and I was possibly going to have to leave my bike there until next month. Instead, they took a quick look at it and asked me specifically how I tinkered with the bike. Again, This is after three other shops looked and messed with it. They took a quick look and ended up fixing my bike within 10 minutes. I am so grateful for this shop. Covid is fucking up my life and I use riding for anger management. Lol. These guys are legit. I was rudly met at the front door with some aggressive questioning and asking what I wanted... This is the most restrictive, claustrophobic, inefficient bike shop. Their hours are 12pm-5pm. They are open 5 hours a day. You cant browse. A guy next to us didn't know what he wanted and the staff said "sorry we dont allow ppl to browse at this time". So better know what you want already or they wont let you in. Wondering where all the Ibis bikes went? This place bought it. They have hundreds of unassembled bike frames. Their staff makes you "stay around the front" They have so many bikes that they have no room to service their customers. Why would you support a hoarding bike shop who gives no consideration for the time of their customers. Cal Coast Bicycles rocks! I was on a city ride today when, BAM, on an up-hill shift my cassette dumped gears. I limped along with only low 2 and high 2 before deciding to head to the nearest bike hospital I could find; Cal Coast Bicycles. After standing in line for just a few minutes, I was met by Charlie. I explained that I couldn't hold the middle gears, I was far from home, and in MAYDAY-mode. He took my ride inside to see if the guys could take a look. 20 minutes later, he came out and diagnosed the problem to be a bent hanger, declared it fixed, and quoted me an extremely fair price to fix it and adjust the de-railer. To be clear, I'm confident that they, like all the other area shops, are inundated with work. So I don't encourage anyone with routine maintenance to just show up expecting same-day service. But they recognized my need for help, and helped me. This is what riding culture is about. This is how service and commitment earns business. Cal Coast, you've earned my business. Very rude staff. They don't let you inside as you can see in the photo , nothing better than standing outside waiting 10+ min for the staff to come out . No clue how inventory is here odds are not very good since they even say the store isn't shoppable on the sign. Employees were also very rude. After a very poor experience with another bike shop on Adams Ave, I had a neighbor evaluate my bike and make recommendations on what it needed. I took it over to Cal Coast and went over it with the technician. It took a long time to have the work completed, but it was actually ready a week earlier than they estimated and I am pleased with all the work they did. So, I bought a beach cruiser from CCB in Sept. '07 which I like very much. The only problem is that I don't think that the designers of the bike had me in mind at all. See, I've put nearly 2,000 miles on a bike that probably isn't made for such distances. Last October something similar happened when I managed to only crack it. I figured that if it happened twice, it will probably happen a third time so I need something stronger. I took it in and they all remembered when I only cracked it last time. When they saw the damage this time, they looked at me like I had carrots growing out of my head. Not organic ones though, regular ones. I told them I needed something stronger - they said no problem. They showed me a crankset that would do the job and like Captain Picard, I said, "Make it so!" So they did. They called me about 4 hours later saying that it was ready and I told them that I'd be in the following morning to pick it up. I showed up when they opened and they rolled my baby right out to me.
