I stopped Big 5 for a pair of Sketchers for walking. I was greeted when I walked in and asked if I needed help. I readily found the Sketcher on the wall and tried out three different pairs. All the while, the employee helping me was patient and informative. I found my perfect pair of walking shoes and headed for the register. The young lady at the register was friendly enough and rang me up. The store was well stocks, clean, and organized. They offer plenty of parking. read more

Stopped by this Big 5 to grab a few things and honestly the experience was ruined by the staff. It felt like asking for help was a major inconvenience to them, and the general attitude was consistently dismissive. I'd suggest shopping elsewhere. read more

There are few choices left in town when it comes to brick and mortar stores for sporting goods. Big 5 has managed to survive and still offers periodic coupons in the mail. They don't have the largest inventory, but it's enough to supply most needs. This location on Convoy St is rarely busy, and they have a nice amount of spaces in a dedicated parking lot which is rare on this block. Because of the smaller footprint, the Big 5 stores are compact and cramped relative to the national chains which have their stock spaced out more evenly. This is especially true when it comes to apparel in which you are bumping into adjacent circular racks while browsing. The fitting room is unisex and tucked away in a corner of the floor. At this particular visit, several employees were milling about so I was able to get assistance from one of them to search for an item. The above mentioned coupon took $5 off my purchase of greater than $20. I appreciate the deduction because I can visit every few months to find something to spend which will exceed the minimum to trigger the discount. read more

I would never recommend anyone to go to this location none of the staff were courteous and professional. I felt very awkward and uncomfortable by the customer service that was provided I had bought some baseball stuff for my child and I had no idea about the return policy with the baseball bats. Instead of just explaining that to me the sales associate they were rude and awkward towards me for just asking if I could return it to exchange it to the correct item. Instead, What should have been a quick and simple explanation turned into a cold and rude response and attitude. Very hesitant to help me find what I was looking for just terrible staff read more

TOO FUNNY!!! I often read old reviews to see if a business has improved. Obviously good reviews are about good or great service. I ran across a few reviews about the shoe department. Funny thing...I can totally relate. Called to see if they actually has the shoes one of the other stores said they had in stock. After being on hold and then being left on the counter (phone receiver) to hear a conversation, was told they had the shoe, but I was already at the stop light. Got into the store, the service was so-so, and the shoes didn't even fit! Had they fit, it would have been a great deal! The email coupons are great when it's something I can use! read more

I needed bocce balls to replace ones missing from my boccee ball court at an AirBnB. I had a $5 off $10+ cpoupon, which the bocce balls without the carry case were $29.99. When I walked in the store, clerk asked the manager I think his name was Charlie, who was also at the cashier counter, where they were. He walked me over to where they were, not just pointed, and showed me the cheapest ones, said they were the ones without the case. Carrying case ones were $59.9. Oh my! When Charlie saw that I was having a hard time trying to hold the box (very heavy, I am having wrist surgery to remove arthritic bone this Monday), he offered to carry it to the register. After ringing me up, Charlie also offered to carry the heavy box to my car for me, which I took him up on. I wrote a good review about this store before and the THEN manager, but all my older reviews disappeared off Yelp. Anyhow, I am giving my experience 5 stars because Charlie got my needs taken care of real quick, and make my shopping here, as easy as can be. I got my $5 off, too. read more

Just started to come to this location a few times now and each time I didn't have to wait too long for service at the air gun department. was always greeted by the cashier and get someone to come help immediately. Helpful, attentive. Had to come in to exchange a product and manager was helpful and I'm satisfied with the service there. read more

I had bought a pair of hiking boots years ago from this store. They finally needed to be replaced. The store was not that busy and as I walked to the shoe area in the back I glanced around and saw lots of great stuff everywhere. Fishing tackle and sports wear. I found lots of good deals in the shoe section and took my time finding a pair of shoes. I was greeted by an employee and he offered to help me. I didn't need any help but I thanked him for offering. On a budget, I ended up with a pair of shoes for hiking for only $25.99. The cashier was friendly and smiled as I came to the counter. I sighed up for future discounts. It's worth coming to this shop if you're looking for some sporting goods or shoes. They even have some well made Mens flip flops that can handle the beach life. I will be back for shoes and workout clothes. read more

I've been on a hunt for some new sneakers and found that I am probably the worst shoe shopper ever! I hate shopping for shoes! I looked online and didn't see anything that caught my eye and I went to a few other places and found nothing. Since I was driving past I stopped in just in case. There were several guys working that were all extremely helpful and nice! My lucky day! I saw a pair that wasn't online and in my favorite color! They had my size, they fit, and they were just perfect! Since the price was 1/3 what my shoe budget was I decided to get a gym bag too! Happy feet over here! Great customer service, awesome prices, and a well kept store! read more

This review will speak specifically to the purchase and release of my first firearm. I cannot attest to the purchasing of other sporting good equipment. Dillion, the manager in-charge of firearms demonstrated exceptional professionalism, knowledge, and created a comfortable sales experience. The purchase of a firearm includes the following steps: -A $25 background check (performed live) -A 30 question test where you are permitted to miss 7 answers. This test covers general gun safety and is fairly easy. You can take this without studying on-site. -Upon successful completion of test, the purchase of a $10 Firearms License. This process takes quite a bit of time, about an hour. You then choose your firearm, pay for it, and you pick it up 10 days later to the hour, not the business day. They have rifles, shotguns, and ammunition. They sell a few accessories like optics and lights, but the selection is very limited. They do not sell handguns. When you pick up your firearm, you go through registering it. You also take a general gun safety test which includes chambering a magazine, rejecting a bullet, and locking your firearm. As complex as the process is, Dillion made it very efficient and much more important, very comfortable. I wasn't sure if Big 5 would be the real deal, but I'd highly recommend it to anyone browsing or looking to purchase a firearm. read more

Pretty small store but you can find some good supplies for a decent price. Maybe I got lucky, but when I went they had a sale on the Nike Slides. I got mine for $20. I was debating on purchasing a new duffle bag as well since some were on sale but decided to hold off for a while. Their workout clothing was a pretty small selection, I was looking for some Nike Cool Pro Shorts but they only had all black. Overall good store for basic needs, I'll be returning! read more

My lil dude's backpack finally bit the dust after 6 years. I needed to replace it fast so I checked websites for one in stock. This was the closest Big 5 store to my house. Despite the poor reviews, I headed down. This store is located on Convoy, just past Balboa. There is plenty of parking available. It's an older building and not impressive from the outside. The inside is fairly clean and organized. When I arrived there were only a couple of other customers in the store. I wasn't greeted even though the employee looked right at me as I entered, she did manage to cheerfully greet the man who walked in after me though. I wondered around trying to find the specific backpack I needed or an employee to assist me. No such luck, they were too busy having a conversation at the register with their backs turned to the sales floor. I had to approach them and ask for help. This is when I discovered one was a manager, he was less than thrilled to have step away from the counter he was holding up. I did get my backpack. I seriously doubt I'd ever return to this location though. read more

Been shopping at this store since I was a young child. Nothing has changed from what I can tell and that's how I like it. It's a great sports store and there's always specials going on. Hopefully when this virus outbreak is done with, I can get more ammo options. Until that happens, can't be choosy and take what you can get. Great store, great prices and friendly staff. read more

For all Big 5 locations. I bought a black backpack a few weeks ago from Them, didn't use it because it was smaller then I needed and I got a bigger one. I kept the receipt and tag, and tried to return it. I was told that they won't let anyone return anything until May 31st, because of covid-19? What does may 31st mean? The virus will just stop on the 31st? People will just stop being sick on the 31st? There supposed policy makes no sense at all. I was not warned during the time of purchase that I could not return anything either until the 31st. Do you really just want to Open up your doors June 1st and have a massive line of people Trying to return things at once? Or even a week of that? read more

I did not even make it to the store and I would not come here! I called this store to try to find out if they had a specific type of glove. The first associate I spoke with acted like I had 5 heads and he couldn't even see me! I waited on hold for 5 minutes just to have another associate answer and say "hello" When I explained what I was looking for, he sounded like he was not paying attention. At this point, I am starting to think the people on the other side of the phone do not have as much "sport knowledge" as I had hoped. After waiting on hold for 10 mins (which I am sure they did on purpose) I finally hung up. I would not waste my time. read more

Legitimately just trying to get my review numbers up without posting all 5 star reviews. It takes a lot for me to write a bad review but sometimes it's appropriate to warn other consumers. I just went in to the Big 5 on Convoy and bought 3 items that when it was rung up I was overcharged $15. If I did not notice it then I would have paid more than the items were CLEARLY marked at. When I told the clerk he just shrugged and said "that happens a lot here on Specials". Not acceptable, and illegal. I would have let it go but when the Manager came up and made the adjustment he acted like it was somewhat of an inconvenience which prompted me to say "An I'm sorry for the overcharge and inconvenience may be appropriate guys" which only evoked a dirty look! Very unprofessional actions all the way around! Beware! read more

I needed some cleats for football last minute to play football, the dude in the back came in clutch and got me some nice ones shout out bro

If this store is indicative of the whole chain I'm surprised they are still in business, I paid cash for some shoes, The next day I went back to exchange them, I waited in the shoe dept. for twenty minutes and no one would help me, So I went up front where the "Manager" and his boys were standing around and asked for a refund. They would not give me cash unless I gave them my drivers license number, which I refused to do. I stated my case and the 'manager' Just gave me a blank look and walked away. I even emailed thier corporate office twice and never received a reply. My advice is stay away from these stores, All the stuff they sell is just cheap crap, customer service is terrible and the 'Managers' are untrained baboons...... One star is to many, They are a zero. read more

Best price in town and I called uhaul, and checked with Sears. read more

Been here several times, they usally have good sales and coupons. However never coming back again unfortunately. Unfriendly staff and cashier girls have horrible, bitter attitudes. They dont except coupons unless they are in "email" bunch of baloney I've ever heard of. ... if the coupon has the company name, bar code, the ad sale, why does it have to be in a email??... phone coupon apps, yelp, Groupon deals... they are no good? ? Really tired of being treated poorly and not being able to use a corporate coupon to get a good deal. ..business is going somewhere else. Customer service, non existing here Savings? ?, lololol Variety of supplies, it's very compacted hard to look for stuff but better off going some place else. Feel very sorry for who ever owns this place, think you might be better off shutting this store down, it's depressing going inside, the treatment to your customers is appalling and you guys forgot that customers are always right. read more

Always good prices here. Salesperson was helpful, but the cashier, Hennessy, was not professional. She had charged me incorrectly for my item twice, then had an attitude when I asked about the pricing- seeing it was $15 over the ticket price. Her tone made it seem like it was my problem, but I had to point out that the price tag said $49.98 and not $64.98 until she finally corrected it the third time, without an acknowledgment of the mistake or thank you for your patience as we figured it out. I know it's not a high end store, but a little more common decency and a little less attitude when confronting an issue would go a long way. read more

DO NOT GO HERE...FIND ANY OTHER BIG 5. No one in store (understand why now). 1 guy working in shoes & he disappears for 20 minutes & comes back empty handed. Had a bad experience at this store with a rep in the shoe department. We asked to see some saucony shoes only to find he dumped the shoes in the back and went on to do something else. I was left feeling like I was imposing on him. We asked the manager for assistance and the individual returned with a smirk and a comment about how he went ahead and got the shoes for us anyways. As if he did us a favor. Wow talk about very poor customer service. Cudo's to the manager for defusing the situation. Still a bad experience. read more

First thing I would say is I came here to pick up some Gloves for the snow and As I arrive here the parking here is not bad . This location is not so busy so you will Allways find a spot to park . The location is located on Convoy St in Kearny Mesa next to Dixieline Lumber . So I park and I walk in . The associate greets me and as I was looking for my gloves another associate asks me if I need help which I would say is good service . So I answer ok can you check some prices for me on these gloves and he was nice enough to check and The price on the gloves was different then the price on the gloves . It was much less expensive . So I say cool thank you . As I was ready to pay I see another pair of gloves and I ask him to check he was nice to check for me again !! Good Service !! So I would recommend you to ask an associate to check the price for you on anything you purchase here before you buy it . Because you might be surprise at how much you will save because the price might be much lower . My overall view here is good Sporting Goods Store and Good Service !! I for sure will return and shop again !!! read more
