I would never recommend anyone to go to this location none of the staff were courteous and professional. I felt very awkward and uncomfortable by the customer service that was provided I had bought some baseball stuff for my child and I had no idea about the return policy with the baseball bats. There are few choices left in town when it comes to brick and mortar stores for sporting goods. Big 5 has managed to survive and still offers periodic coupons in the mail. They don't have the largest inventory, but it's enough to supply most needs. This location on Convoy St is rarely busy, and they have a nice amount of spaces in a dedicated parking lot which is rare on this block. Because of the smaller footprint, the Big 5 stores are compact and cramped relative to the national chains which have their stock spaced out more evenly. This is especially true when it comes to apparel in which you are bumping into adjacent circular racks while browsing. The fitting room is unisex and tucked away in a corner of the floor. At this particular visit, several employees were milling about so I was able to get assistance from one of them to search for an item. The above mentioned coupon took $5 off my purchase of greater than $20. I appreciate the deduction because I can visit every few months to find something to spend which will exceed the minimum to trigger the discount. read more

TOO FUNNY!!! I often read old reviews to see if a business has improved. Obviously good reviews are about good or great service. I ran across a few reviews about the shoe department. Funny thing...I can totally relate. Called to see if they actually has the shoes one of the other stores said they had in stock. After being on hold and then being left on the counter (phone receiver) to hear a conversation, was told they had the shoe, but I was already at the stop light. I needed bocce balls to replace ones missing from my boccee ball court at an AirBnB. I had a $5 off $10+ cpoupon, which the bocce balls without the carry case were $29.99. When I walked in the store, clerk asked the manager I think his name was Charlie, who was also at the cashier counter, where they were. He walked me over to where they were, not just pointed, and showed me the cheapest ones, said they were the ones without the case. Carrying case ones were $59.9. Oh my! When Charlie saw that I was having a hard time trying to hold the box (very heavy, I am having wrist surgery to remove arthritic bone this Monday), he offered to carry it to the register. After ringing me up, Charlie also offered to carry the heavy box to my car for me, which I took him up on. I wrote a good review about this store before and the THEN manager, but all my older reviews disappeared off Yelp. I had bought a pair of hiking boots years ago from this store. They finally needed to be replaced. The store was not that busy and as I walked to the shoe area in the back I glanced around and saw lots of great stuff everywhere. Fishing tackle and sports wear. I found lots of good deals in the shoe section and took my time finding a pair of shoes. I was greeted by an employee and he offered to help me. I didn't need any help but I thanked him for offering. This review will speak specifically to the purchase and release of my first firearm. I cannot attest to the purchasing of other sporting good equipment. Dillion, the manager in-charge of firearms demonstrated exceptional professionalism, knowledge, and created a comfortable sales experience. The purchase of a firearm includes the following steps: -A $25 background check (performed live) -A 30 question test where you are permitted to miss 7 answers. This test covers general gun safety and is fairly easy. You can take this without studying on-site. -Upon successful completion of test, the purchase of a $10 Firearms License. This process takes quite a bit of time, about an hour. You then choose your firearm, pay for it, and you pick it up 10 days later to the hour, not the business day. They have rifles, shotguns, and ammunition. They sell a few accessories like optics and lights, but the selection is very limited. They do not sell handguns. When you pick up your firearm, you go through registering it. You also take a general gun safety test which includes chambering a magazine, rejecting a bullet, and locking your firearm. As complex as the process is, Dillion made it very efficient and much more important, very comfortable. I wasn't sure if Big 5 would be the real deal, but I'd highly recommend it to anyone browsing or looking to purchase a firearm. read more

Despite the poor reviews, I headed down. This store is located on Convoy, just past Balboa. There is plenty of parking available. It's an older building and not impressive from the outside. The inside is fairly clean and organized. When I arrived there were only a couple of other customers in the store. I wasn't greeted even though the employee looked right at me as I entered, she did manage to cheerfully greet the man who walked in after me though. I wondered around trying to find the specific backpack I needed or an employee to assist me. No such luck, they were too busy having a conversation at the register with their backs turned to the sales floor. I had to approach them and ask for help. This is when I discovered one was a manager, he was less than thrilled to have step away from the counter he was holding up. I did get my backpack. Pretty small store but you can find some good supplies for a decent price. Maybe I got lucky, but when I went they had a sale on the Nike Slides. I got mine for $20. I was debating on purchasing a new duffle bag as well since some were on sale but decided to hold off for a while. I kept the receipt and tag, and tried to return it. I was told that they won't let anyone return anything until May 31st, because of covid-19? What does may 31st mean? The virus will just stop on the 31st? People will just stop being sick on the 31st? There supposed policy makes no sense at all. I did not even make it to the store and I would not come here! I called this store to try to find out if they had a specific type of glove. The first associate I spoke with acted like I had 5 heads and he couldn't even see me! I just went in to the Big 5 on Convoy and bought 3 items that when it was rung up I was overcharged $15. If I did not notice it then I would have paid more than the items were CLEARLY marked at. When I told the clerk he just shrugged and said "that happens a lot here on Specials". Not acceptable, and illegal. I would have let it go but when the Manager came up and made the adjustment he acted like it was somewhat of an inconvenience which prompted me to say "An I'm sorry for the overcharge and inconvenience may be appropriate guys" which only evoked a dirty look! If this store is indicative of the whole chain I'm surprised they are still in business, I paid cash for some shoes, The next day I went back to exchange them, I waited in the shoe dept. for twenty minutes and no one would help me, So I went up front where the "Manager" and his boys were standing around and asked for a refund. They would not give me cash unless I gave them my drivers license number, which I refused to do. I stated my case and the 'manager' Just gave me a blank look and walked away. I even emailed thier corporate office twice and never received a reply. She had charged me incorrectly for my item twice, then had an attitude when I asked about the pricing- seeing it was $15 over the ticket price. Came here to buy running shoes. Literally was two people in the store including me, both of us were in the shoe area. Meanwhile I needed to get some sizes and no one was around to help me. I saw employees talking to each other and organizing things in the front of the store I had to walk around to find someone for 10 min. The staff were not very friendly at all and the person at the register was in the phone with someone else when I was checking out and barely acknowledged me.
