You wouldn't think that combination of factors would be so difficult to find, but in my part of town I've been struggling. And then I stumbled across this tiny café/bar in Montgomery Street, and it was Renroc to the rescue! Other reasons I like it are its continental feel, with tables outside that are always packed on sunny days, the friendly staff,stylish decor, and range of simple but classy food. It's not super cheap, and in fact seems to have a clientele exclusively made up of wealthy, eating-out-for-breakfast types, but it's very nice all the same.

Circus is just off the Royal Mile enough to be slightly less manic during the Festival, although it is handy for venues that are down that end of the aforementioned street, as well as the Pleasance. The highlight of the space is the wee garden courtyard at the back, which is good for larger groups and I imagine would be heavenly on a sunny day; sadly I've always been on my own when I've visited and have never made it any further than the main bit at the front. The cuisine is varied bistro-style with a middle-Eastern slant. The menu isn't huge, but it's good for me as there are a couple of veggie and fishy options to try. The staff have always been attentive and friendly when I've been in and the service is pretty rapid even when they're busy. On this occasion I opted for the veggie breakfast, and was very pleasantly surprised with what turned up. No baked beans, for a start! Instead, there was a small amount of green salad. It still had the usual staples of veggie sausages (nice), mushrooms hash browns and potato scones (nice and crisp, not greasy at all), scrambled eggs (fluffy), and fried tomato - which I left as I'm not a big fan of those. It arrived in good time, was hot, tasty and filling. Just what you need for a lunch on a Monday! The pancakes were thick and fluffy, just how I like them, and there was plenty maple syrup to go with. The cakes looked epic, so I opted for a caramel shortbread to take away. I think it was home-made and the side of a small door stop. Yum! Decor-wise, it's ye old thrift shop style, with old gramophones, mismatched furniture and bunting. Shelves are brimming with knick knacks and odds and sods and there's plenty to have a nose at. Only minor gripe is that the place was quite cold and didn't feel cosy. I had to keep my jacket on for the entire meal. Brr!

So overall the all day breakfast was good value, but I felt there was perhaps a little too much grease on some items, and the bacon could have been of a better quality....but I am a bacon snob and also an member of the British Sausage Appreciation society! And prey you may think what does he know to comment so much????? Well I spend 10 months of the year cooking fryups for our American clients at the inn I co-own...so I think I know a great breakfast when I see one! The rest of our party had combination items of scrambled eggs/toast and bits of cooked vegetable...all seemed happy. A point I think needs addressing is the tea...which was very poor. It lacked flavour, colour and strength. If strong tea is too strong you can weaken it...but you cannot reverse this process! Also on the day we visited it was cold....and the cafe never warmed up enough, so Cafe Creatives invest in some extra heaters or insulate your fire door, as half of the Forth winds were blowing in through them there cracks! The staff did seem overworked and I would agree the initial meet and greet needs sharpening up as table waiting folks seem to mill around and get in their way, and also the way of the seated clients. Anyway, we found this one, we had just missed breakfast (ends at 11:15) which was fine because what we had, we liked and the guy helping us couldn't have been nicer. Give this place a try if you are looking for something quick, simple and imo good. The florentine was good, I wanted to try the brownie but didn't get a chance, its right behind the cathedral off the royal mile.

First, we did not receive the usual welcome; instead, as we placed our backpacks down at a table and began to choose cold drinks from the cooler, we received a concerned inquiry from the staff about our status as paying customers. After we purchased a few items, we sat down to enjoy them. The staff asked us to pay the difference of £3.85 for staying instead of leaving. Honestly, this seemed a little petty. I'm not sure if this is everywhere or just a here thing, but the way in which it was handled was off putting.
