Definitely a must try restaurant for anyone who lives nearby. This spot gets everything right- plenty of parking, fast and friendly service, elegant decor, big portions, and delicious food! Admittedly, I'm not an expert in Polish cuisine, but this restaurant has greatly increased my interest in trying more! Outside of the food, there's many things to like about this restaurant. The decor is nice and modern, and the presentation of the food is good for this price point. The restaurant is comfortable and good for sitting in for a while, with service that is extremely friendly. This reminds me of another excellent restaurant A Thousand Tales, where we are treated like family on every visit - even on the first visit there. It's very clear how proud the staff is of the restaurant and the food they serve, and they take the effort to explain the food to the diner. Fortunately, the food is just as good as it looks. I've been looking for food that's prepared from scratch with high quality ingredients that aren't reliant on heavy sauces, and this really hit the mark. Everything from the bread with herbs and butter to the delicious soups was prepared fresh and tasty. Similarly, with the chips and salsa - it was clear that this was homemade with a great flavor to match. Unsurprisingly, the pastor tacos were full of flavor, with a generous amount of slightly fatty pork, fresh cilantro, and onions served with fresh lime. These were some of the best tacos I've had in recent memory from any restaurant, and I am definitely a huge fan of the preparation (the sweetness of the pineapple juice perfectly matched the bold mix of spices). The sampler platter was also a great option which gave a mix of many different items. The goulash was delicious with the mushrooms and sautee pepper. The pierogis had the perfect firmness and delicious filling. The sausage was flavorful and juicy. The potato pancakes could've been a bit more crisp but the flavor was still good. The breaded pork schnitzel was tasty and had just the right amount of breading. Overall, definitely recommend going to this spot for anything that's looking for high quality made from scratch food at a reasonable price point. The great service and elegant interior is a bonus on top of a very enjoyable and filling meal.

Clockwise: Polish sampler platter for 2, rainbow trout, and pork shank.

The food is flavorful, delicious, and well prepared here!  Our party of 4 ordered a Polish sampler platter for 2, a rainbow trout entree, and a pork shank entree.  The pork shank was very tender, and the trout was also very fresh.  The platter for 2 struck us as being on the smallish side, but a whatever on that as it was all tasty.  Overall, except maybe on that platter for 2, the prices are reasonable though they are currently at 4% higher than the printed menu prices.  Complimentary warm bread slices were also provided. Their dining space is not that big, so I called in with a reservation for 4.  It probably wasn't needed on a Thursday night, but it doesn't hurt to make one.  Marvin was our informative server and he's also a partner here.  They kept the place on the cool side so I'm glad I had my light jacket with me.  I'll go with 4.5 rounded up to 5 stars for our outing.  We will make an effort to return sometime and try some other dishes.

Looking for a cozy spot on a cold Midwest night...I stumbled upon Qulinarnia. It is a quaint BYOB restaurant with a robust menu. I got their sample platter and loved every single item (pierogi ruski, kielbasa, sauerkraut, cabbage rolls). I got the grilled sausage to go The rainbow trout is listed as boneless but had bones so the host generously offered a dessert for the trouble. Will definitely be back for some comfort food, they have quick to-go options.

I was craving Polish food and was checking out some in the area and this popped up! It was super cozy inside and very homey. Our server was super welcoming and didn't treat us any worse because we weren't polish. I ordered the chicken soup to start and then sampler plate. The chicken soup was warm and had plenty of herbs. The pierogies were delicious. The skin was cooked perfectly and the potatoes inside were flavorful. I loved the potato pancake. It was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and not as greasy as I expected. The wrapped cabbage was also made well, the shape stayed together and it wasn't too bland. I didn't love the sausage and it was a bit tough but everything else was great! I get the vibes that this restaurant is mom-and-pop and it's a local spot, so I want to show lots of support! I would definitely go again and the food is very affordable.

Good, fancy Polish food with nicely decorated interior. Their portions are huge! It's always nice to take home leftovers.

Which menu items would hold up best to takeout and then reheating and still taste as good as dine-in? Any lower sodium or gluten-free (no barley, rye, wheat or wheat flour) options?

Anything for vegetarians? Is animal fat used to prepare all fried food?

We have 3 vegetarian dishes plus few options from appetizers pr extra sides to make a full meal. We use plant based fat for cooking/frying…

We ordered pierogi's on a Friday night and they were incredible. We ordered a plate of half potato and cheese and half spinach and mozzarella. They were simply just amazing. If I have to be super super picky, though, the potato and cheese pierogis tasted only a slightly bit doughy, but it was still great and I'm planning on paying Smetana multiple visits in the future.

I have this terrible habit of driving past restaurants and not stopping. I read the Yelps and often…read morethink "I should have stopped". After time passes, I do stop and then curse myself for not stopping sooner; Or the place closes without me ever stepping foot in the door. U Gazdy here is a prime example. I didn't even know it was a restaurant for years. I always thought this place was some kind of private Polish social club. But it's a restaurant, all right. Polish to the core, and not a buffet, as a lot of other Polish restaurants in the area are. The outside of this place dictates what the interior is going to be. It's basically a log cabin. I found the atmosphere to be warm, however. Being of part Polish descent, I had a grandmother who was a master in the kitchen. Looking at the pictures, I knew what a bunch of these dishes were, But I didn't know their names. There were about 10 things I wanted to try on the menu, but I followed my usual dictate for first visits and went with the staff's suggestion of the restaurant's specialties. Luckily the young girl waitress spoke fine English. The roast pork shank was the specialty of the house. I ordered it with the finger dumplings. To start, a bowl of tripe soup. Tripe soup is usually considered the fear factor menu, by most Americans, but here it was absolutely delicious. Peppery and savory, I slurped down every drop. There was a basket of fine Polish rye bread, and an unidentified small ramekin of light brown spread with flecks of something in it. It was not butter. I'm an adventurous eater, so I figured "what the hell". The spread on the bread was very very good, prompting a second slice and finish of the ramekin. When the waitress brought out my entree, I asked what was in the ramekin? Pork Lard with onions. I now know I'm a fan of pork lard with onions. Now the pork shank was spectacular indeed. A huge bone surrounded by hard skin, with beautiful pork and pork fat within. I cut open the hard skin, saving that delicacy for later in the feed. Paring away most of the fat, the tender pork morsels were heavenly! It didn't need it at all, but there was a small ramekin of horseradish which I applied to every third bite or so. Fab! Eventually got down to chomping the crispy pork skin, my Polish Grandmother called "Skuziĕcku" (although I can find no reference to that word anywhere-It was a long time ago I heard this, and there's a good chance the word was mangled through years of speaking English). No matter what it's called, the pork skin was fabulous. There was a smattering of Polish Sauerkraut underneath the Pork, it was divine. The little finger dumplings on the side looked like styrofoam packing pellets. In butter. They could have BEEN styrofoam packing pellets for all I know, but they were delicious. I washed all this down with a "small glass" of Polish Draught Beer called "Zywiec". In truth, I could have drunk another four or five glasses of this excellent brew which complimented the cuisine PERFECTLY, but didn't because it's a long drive home to Stately Breakwind Manor, and I hold my Drivers License near and dear. I continued with a Diet Coke. It surprised me not when I saw a little Polish Grandma walk out of the staff door. I asked the waitress if she was the chef, and she said yes-All the recipes were hers. Now that's a jackpot if I ever saw one. The rest of the menu looked fabulous, and I definitely will be back here. I was so happy with my meal, I called two of my foodie friends on the way home to tell them about it. Both came here within the next three days, and they were crazy about the place as well. My buddy's wife is a spectacular Polish cook, and she said the place was the real deal. It's a cruise from the outer southwest burbs to the corner of IrvingParkRoad and Addison, but I will gladly make that trek whenever I can. This is true gourmet eating folks. I shoulda stopped the first time I saw the place. Throwing five for sure.
