On the far edge of Canada--about as west as the map allows--you wouldn't expect to stumble into a…read morelove letter to the east. Yet tucked into the rhythm of downtown Victoria, a few steps from the grand columns of the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, sits a deli that feels like it took a bite out of Montreal and carried it across the entire country. Broughton Street Deli doesn't pretend to reinvent anything. That's the point. It's a place that understands the quiet dignity of doing something simple--really well. The Montreal smoked meat arrives the way it should: thin-sliced, warm, and stacked with reckless generosity between bread that knows its job is simply to hold the miracle together. Each slice is tender, smoky, and rich, the kind of meat that folds onto itself like velvet. Then comes the mustard--made in-house, sharp and bright, cutting through the fat just enough to remind you why this sandwich has survived generations. Take a bite and for a second you forget you're standing on the Pacific. It's a small culinary miracle: the farthest west of Canada faithfully channeling a food tradition born nearly 4,000 kilometers away in Quebec. But the sandwich isn't the whole story. Behind the counter is a husband-and-wife team who've been running this place for nearly two decades. The kind of couple that greets regulars by name and first-timers like they've been expected all along. There's a certain immigrant grit to the place--work hard, build something honest, send the kids off to get the education you never had. The quiet, proud arc of a family business that didn't just survive but became part of the neighborhood. And they're not slowing down. You see it in the rhythm of the room. Regulars drift in for "the usual." Newcomers get a smile and a gentle nudge toward whatever the owners think you should try today. Sit long enough and the place turns into a little theatre of Victoria life. Don't skip the sweets. The cookies and butter tarts are homemade--real homemade, not the marketing department kind. And the peanut butter cookie, somehow both indulgent and gluten-free, has picked up awards that make sense the second it hits your mouth. So slow down. Grab a seat. Let the sandwich drip a little mustard on the paper. Talk to the owners. Talk to the stranger next to you. Watch the steady parade of locals who clearly know they've found something good. Because in a city surrounded by marble halls, political speeches, and the formal gravity of the legislature, sometimes the most genuine place in the neighborhood is a deli counter quietly serving one perfect sandwich at a time. CHEERS!!!

Located on Fort St, there's several shops, restaurants & bakeries on this street. BC knows how to do Smash Burgers right! Taste, presentation, flavour ALL on point! One of the bestest burgers ever indeed. While we don't have In-N-Out Burger up here in Canada - this is probably the next best thing. The thin cut fries are excellent. Get an order of regular fries. OMG the Chocolate Shake here is absolutely sensational! It looks small & unassuming, but don't be fooled - it's the real deal when it comes to quality shakes! Be sure to tell the cashier you want your shake after you finish your burger. I do not recommend you get it to go - have it right away once you've finished your meal. Also if you are one to carry around your own metal or plastic straw, bring it here! This shake should not be associated with paper straws = sadness! I usually get a single burger, but if you really love that beef & prefer a double patty, then go for it. The beef is right here at BC!

FOOD The Monty Mushroom Burger is my go-to fav and it never fails to delight. The Kennebec potato French fries are always done right. When making it a Spot Meal, I chose a side Caesar salad, deep-fried zucchini sticks; it comes with a side of coleslaw too. The Pirate Paks are always a hit with the kids - my little guy happened to choose Mac and cheese with French fries today - but the burger and cheeseburger and chicken strips usually work out well also. The carrot cake was decadent - a little too sweet for me, but anyone looking for a (literally) sweet way to finish the meal would not go home disappointed :) === 3. SERVICE On this latest night it seemed perhaps the wait staff were stretched thin or less trained that they should be. It feels like a lot of staff are moving around but not stopping by any tables or carrying anything. Food service was slow out of the kitchen (not the wait staff's fault presumably). Our waitress also missed the post-dinner coffee but comp'd the dessert completely as a result. === 4. ENVIRONMENT Still the old diner-style layout, but remodelled in the last 5 years or so with a clean look and decent sightlines around. It's tough trying to be a little bit of everything: family restaurant with a mix of sports bar (including the TVs and actual bar with water fountain backdrop). You can fit wheelchairs and baby strollers inside - keep in mind that some folks may have some challenges navigating the slight incline of the property to get into the restaurant. Parking is as lucky as you are in the Saanich Centre complex parking lot - which is sometimes packed and sometimes empty :)
