UPDATE TO THE BELOW REVIEW:
I finally couldn't take the squeaky bed anymore and asked for a room change. The woman at the front desk (different woman from this afternoon) without question or hesitation switched my room while apologizing profusely, sent the maintenance man up to check out the room to fix it, and comped my breakfast for the morning. The woman working the front desk on at midnight on 8/1-8/2 deserves a raise. She's an example of what great service is and if I ever give Quirk a second chance (I travel to Richmond almost monthly now) it's because of her.
My new room is very clean. You can still hear noise from the other rooms (the loud sex and music is just a teeny bit louder than the white noise machine on the highest setting), but the bed doesn't squeak with every move, the carpet is not wet and the desk is actually large enough to work at. This is an old building and clearly all rooms are not equal here. My new room speaks much better to a $200+ price tag. Its unfortunate it took complaining at midnight to get it, but at least they fixed the issue when I raised it.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Finally settling down in my room for the night after a long day of travel. To quote the classic movie clueless, this place is a full on Monet. From far away it's nice, but up close it's one big disappointment.
Before anyone decides to get up on their high horse and say I should have requested a room change before writing this- take this into account: 1. I don't believe I'm asking too much for a clean and decent room when paying over $200 a night. 2. It's nearly midnight and I'm sitting down in my room for the first time. I have my toiletries out, my dress hanging up and I need to be up in 6 hours for a work meeting. No. I absolutely should not be placed in a position to have to re-pack, get dressed and go complain bc the hotel can't keep up with basic house keeping and room maintenance...again, Esp when paying over $200 a night!
Time for the review....
Millennial pink threw up all over this place. It's cute, artsy in a Wes Anderson inspired way and the lobby is bright and clean. It's a place you want to hang out. The pink continues to the rooms where design was clearly taken to account but executed somewhat poorly. Here is a list of my gripes and why I will probably never stay here again.
1. The floors are hardwood with a large area rug. Nice idea, feels clean, looks nice, but I hear everything in the room upstairs. Down to the impatient toe tapping. I'd hate to be in my room trying to sleep when house keeping comes by.
2 you can hear everything happening in the hallway. Clearing of the throat, walking, the water running in the room next door. You hear everything. I guess this is why you get a massive sound machine in your room.
3. The bed. You guys, I took a video bc this is really unbelievable but apparently yelp doesn't let you post videos. If I wasn't in my pajamas and about to collapse I would ask to switch rooms. I may still have to bc I might just wake myself up every time I move. It squeaks incredibly loud if you so much as look at it. This is nuts. Also, the base looks like something a high school wood shop class would make.
4. There is a big wet spot on my carpet. I thought it was a stain, I wasn't paying attention and stepped in it. Gross. It's wet. Wtf.
5. A half used bottle of conditioner was left in my shower. Did they even clean it?!
6. The mini fridge doesn't open because it's behind door stop. You need to physically move the mini fridge if you want anything out of it. But hey, it's pink so I guess that makes it ok?
7. The outlet at the desk is totally taken up
By the mini fridge that you can't open and the desk is taken up by the display of non perishable mini fridge goodies. So if you're here for work and trying to charge your laptop and do some work, forget about it.
8. Not totally the hotels fault since this is a 'city' but I do expect some sound proofing to take place in high end hotels...you can also hear all the noise outside. Car horn and sirens as I type this at midnight.
9. Last but not least- the staff. There was a family checking in ahead of my when I arrived. It took a VERY long time for the woman at the front desk to get them checked in. A man came and stood at the front desk but never offered to help, looked at me and walked away. When it was finally my turn the woman didn't apologize for the wait or thank me for waiting or anything. That just took me by surprise, basic courtesy from front desk staff isn't asking too much.
I should have paid better attention to the reviews and stayed at the Hilton like I always do. I wanted to treat myself to a nice night while away from home on work travel and instead I'm overpaying to stay in what feels like a DIY project. read more
