Okay I have to leave a review because this stay actually exceeded my expectations. We stayed at The Berkeley Hotel and I was a little unsure at first since they're in the middle of renovations, but you honestly wouldn't even know once you're in the room. The room felt super modern, clean, and updated, which I was not expecting in the best way. Also, the space. The room was big, which made a huge difference. It didn't feel cramped at all, and it was actually comfortable to relax and get ready. Customer service was also on point. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and helpful without it feeling forced, which I always appreciate. The location is great too, easy to get around and close to everything without being chaotic. I didn't even take a ton of pictures (which says a lot for me lol), but I had to come on here and say this was 100% a solid stay. I'd definitely come back. read more

First, I did not know about construction being done at the hotel when I first booked it. We arrived early on our check in day. Granted, I understand that rooms would most likely not be ready at 10:30am, however, when I called to inquire about the room at 2:30pm, I was told that it still was not ready. The man at the desk stated he would call when the room was ready. Meanwhile, there was no waiting area in the hotel because of all the renovations, so we had to go outside and look around for placing to sit and wait; from 11:00am till 3:40pm. We even asked if there were any other rooms available. We were told that they were all booked up. Ok,, it's just about 4:00pm, which is check in time, and there was no phone call. We went up to the front desk and the lady, who has taken over for the night shift states that our room JUST BECAME AVAILABLE. (hard to believe that it took over 4 hours to clean up a room). We walked into our room expecting a fresh smell. Not even close. That room was definitely ready a few hours prior to our entrance. The front desk lady was rude and condescending. We only had two hangers in the room. We called down to request for more. She said she'll see what she can find but it might be hard because of all the construction. She said she would call. Did we get a call? No.. Did we get at least two more hangers? No.. We wanted the room cleaned since we had been there for two days. I asked the same lady at the front desk if we can get some towels. She replied, "Well I'm not bringing it upstairs". We never asked her to bring it upstairs, we asked for towels and to have the room cleaned. The lady said she would let the cleaning service know. What did we return to after having lunch? New towels with the same dirty room. They did not clean up the room! I travel a lot and stay at many different hotels. This is the first hotel where I will surely NEVER return. I'd also give it a "0" for customer service. read more

We used some credit card benefits to book here - fine for the price but definitely needs the renovation they seem to be in the midst of. The rooms were fine - mattresses could use replacing and everything else a freshening up but overall comfortable enough for a few nights. The restaurant situation was a bit odd - hard to tell which parts of it were open with chairs on the table during open hours. There was coffee and ice water out all day which is always nice. From check in to checkout, the staff was very friendly and attentive making sure our stay was good. I am a heavy sleeper so having a room on the street side didn't bother me but if you're a light sleeper I would recommend getting a room not on the street. Our room was spacious we booked a king deluxe room. Bed was super comfy. Not much lighting besides the lamps but that didn't bother me. Bathroom was spacious as well! I didn't realize they recently opened back up so they're working on some renovations but it was a nice stay overall. Only down side is parking is hard. They do have valet parking which is $30/night otherwise it's trying to find street parking which we were lucky to find. The public parking garage the block before the hotel is closed for some reason otherwise we would've parked there. There's a bar and restaurant attached which my husband and I went to for drinks and appetizers before our dinner reservation. Our arrival at The Berkeley Hotel was earlier than the standard check-in time of 4:00 PM. To our pleasant surprise, the friendly staff member at the front desk accommodated our early arrival and allowed us to check into room #214. This unexpected kindness made a positive impression and contributed to a wonderful start to our stay as though I thought? First off the room was cute, but dated with a modern touch to it, a big screen TVreally nobody uses these days with the introduction of the personal cellphone. There was NO Microwave, Mini Refrigerator or hair dryer. There WAS although a nice size amoral closet with an ironing board and iron. The Shower did get hot but the water pressure could have been a lot stronger (I see this trend in a lot of hotels these days, save money on the water). AC produced loud clicking noises every time it turned on after reaching its cut off temperature control settings. The bed was comfortable but I believe because animals are allowed in the rooms with their owners from past stays my allergies began to kick in and I had to take Visine for my eyes before going to sleep. A horrible experience for me. The hotel is near all in the heart of the city, 3 blocks from the Capital (a must visit if you're out this way) and a block in either direction of nice assorted places to eat. On E. Main Street and South 10th Street there is a 7-11. Directly across the street from The Berkeley Hotel is a restaurant called the Tobacco Company Restaurant, I heard the food was good, but my Wife and I didn't eat there, instead we opted for a nice Mexican restaurant by the water called CASA DEL BARCO. I actually did a review on this restaurant on Google. Great food nice ambiance. And so if you like charm, but a little dated, plus location and pet friendly then go check out THE BERKELEY HOTEL. I rated the room ONLY 3 stars because, 1. my itchy eyes in bed 2. a noticeable stain in the carpet, and 3. A late day find which clinched the day for me. Our tolid suddenly stopped flushing, and from the embarrassing picture I enclosed. One can clearly see that the owners decided that a paper clip and paper tape would fix the flush handle. PS...the hotel did reach out to me in all fairness with an apology. But as I examined some past reviews on here from other patrons like me as far back as a year ago. The same excuse from The Berkeley Hotel was followed by the announcement of a FUTURE RENOVATION. So it seems to me that where ever those allocated funds are located for those renovations they certainly don't have them and perhaps should be a little forthright and honest in their approach to their customers. I had an unforgettable stay at the Berkley Hotel. Although this review is a bit late, the vivid memories of my time there are still fresh. As you drive up the charming cobblestone street, you're greeted by a beautiful brick building exuding an old-world, bougie ambiance. While only one valet was on duty at a time, causing a slight delay, the valet gentleman was incredibly kind and made me feel like royalty. He handled everything smoothly and professionally, ensuring I knew what to expect, including the text to call for the valet. The front desk experience was a bit underwhelming. The staff wasn't unfriendly, but the greeting lacked warmth and hospitality. Check-in, however, was efficient, and finding the elevators was a breeze. I stayed on the fourth floor in a standard double queen room. The room's decor matched the hotel's overall vibe - old style with new materials. It included all the typical amenities like a desk, wardrobe, safe, and chair. The bathroom was well-equipped, though the tile floor was quite slick. The HVAC system was unusually loud, something I noticed immediately and confirmed later while lying in bed. A few issues arose during my stay. The room phone didn't work, though the one near the toilet did. After struggling with the wardrobe for about ten minutes, I had to call down for assistance. The front desk gentleman arrived promptly to help. The cleanliness of the room left something to be desired, with noticeable buildup on mirrors and fixtures. This might be due to recent changes in owners cutting corners on cleaning staff, as I didn't see any cleaning help during my stay. Despite these issues, the room was comfortable, and I would stay there again. The hotel lobby displayed plans for renovated rooms that looked stunning - a blend of urban contemporary and minimalist elegance. These renovations were said to be underway soon, and I'd love to experience one of the new rooms, but glancing at the other recent reviews, it looks like that hasn't happened, yet. For parking, I opted for valet the entire stay, though there are closer parking garages nearby. The area is dotted with lovely places to eat, all within walking distance, and the nightlife is both entertaining and safe. Prices are comparable to other larger hotel chains, but the Berkley offers unique charm and a touch of old-world elegance. The valet staff, especially the gentleman named TC or TK, was the highlight of my stay. His exceptional service alone is a reason to return. All in all, I highly recommend the Berkley Hotel for its charm and memorable ambiance. I'm pretty disappointed to have to 2-star this because the staff was very nice while I was there. They were polite, attentive, and easy to reach. But the hotel itself is just too run down to earn more stars (especially considering that it's priced in roughly the same neighborhood as more modern and high end hotels in the same neighborhood). I honestly don't like to nitpick hotels. For the most part if it's clean, bright, and has modern amenities, I'm perfectly happy. Here, there were worn out spots in the carpeting on the floor, the tub didn't retain water, the TV was roughly 24-36 inches and didn't get many channels, the wake up call system wasn't automated, and they didn't even have glasses in the room. All of these individually are minor annoyances, but they all add up. This wouldn't have bothered me too much except the hotel was pricey (as I mentioned above). They had some interesting historical mementos hanging on the hallway walls, but the markers are worn and scratched. This hotel has a lot of potential and, again, the staff were very nice. But it needs a lot of love to restore it before I'd journey back. read more

This is an antique style hotel with very spacious rooms, a great patio/balcony and nice trimmings. Service is solid, too. Everyone is also friendly, especially Danny. The location of the hotel is okay; it's near the canal and a few restaurants. I suggest staying closer to the "city center" near West Cary Street. A few areas that could use improvement: Amenities: + The lobby cafe/restaurant was closed the whole time, which didn't allow to hang out anywhere. + The soaps, shampoos were also cheap; Motel like. Also, there wasn't a mini fridge nor microwave, which is generally standard these days. + There weren't good (cheap) parking options; valet was $30 a night or a local parking structure across the street was $15 a night; both unnecessarily high. Although this place is nice and spacious it still requires some updating and attention. with a little work and effort this place can be a solid four stars read more

Bed was super comfy but the room we stayed in really needs a deep clean. There appeared to be blood on the wall and mold in the coffee maker. Luckily I wasn't desperate for coffee. There is a Starbucks right across the street so that was convenient. I found the staff friendly and helpful. 5/5 stars on that Tip: Don't pay for parking on weekends if you can help it since street parking is open and free Saturdays and Sundays! read more

The service in this hotel is excellent. Starlett was so kind and very helpful. But the hotel seems very dated. The wallpaper in my room was peeling. And bed pillows on my bed appeared old. There was 3 king size and one standard size pillow. All of which were lumpy. I would definitely not stay at this hotel again unless there were some major improvements made. read more

Stayed there in January for a wedding. Restaurant and bar are closed and they don't seem to think it is something they should share with you when you make a reservation. Older building now renovated to be a boutique style hotel. When we reserved our room, the travel site posted a 500 square-foot room. Our room was very small, not as advertised on the travel website but it was very clean and well-maintained. Unfortunately the front desk guy did not know the area so he was not helpful for restaurant recommendations or even the direction to go to get to them. IT IS a classic, boutique, hotel that meets the Road Warrior's occasional need for a little romance while traveling. This is a "one of a kind" place in the Heart of Richmond. It's packed with lots of period furniture, dark wood paneling, recessed lighting, table lamps and gilded picture frames. Can be very pricey. Shop the deals if you're traveling for business or on a fixed budget. Best rate I have ever received was $179.00 plus valet parking and taxes. read more

Was really looking forward to staying here. I booked the room over 1 month in advance and I do give certain allowances for historical hotels HOWEVER, there were too many misses to make up for a few pluses. Pluses include the nice architecture of the building, the close location to restaurants and the James River Canal path. Minuses: rm# 602; the view (see attached), a mysterious sink link every time the tap was turned on, the water pressure was atrocious and the mattress was rock hard. Also, nothing was open inside despite the re-opening of many other businesses and restaurants around it (I'll give a Covid pass for this one). Will not consider this hotel in future. read more

My husband and I have been on the road for more than two thousand miles during a northeast road trip and were looking for a quiet, nice stop on our way home. Our goal was to have a good bottle of wine, delicious dinner, and comfortable room, and this certainly fit the bill. I booked the day of using the TripAdvisor app and found a Sunday sale, so bring it on! The Berkeley Hotel did not disappoint. I knocked off a star because the view from our room looked into a brick wall. If I could open the window, I literally could almost touch it. But I assumed that's what you get for the rate we booked. But the room was still beautifully appointed and had a huge bathroom with great amenities, a Keurig coffee maker, a comfy bed, and all of the creature comforts we needed. To be honest, at this point, we were all about the wine and food so we migrated downstairs to the bar. As a wine blogger, I was impressed with the fact that we ordered a Washington state wine from a winery we know well, and we ended up getting a 2007 vintage, which is the best year the state has had in a long time. It was a gift after being in the car so long! We ordered a bottle and started with a beautiful cheese platter. I loved the fact we could move from our room, to the bar, and then to the restaurant with such ease, and had the same server, Kim, at both places. So after we finished the cheese platter and made our way to the restaurant, we ordered the fried chicken and short rib, which were both delicious. I wished we had more time in the city as the hotel was centrally located and walkable to/from a lot of places, and I loved the cobblestone streets. It made it feel like we were in a European village. One caveat: the valet parking was $23/night, but for one night, it was palatable. read more

Very nice, classic upscale hotel setup on a cobblestone street in the mix of a very nice area. My colleagues usually select this place when visiting a very special client here so it was only right that during my first trip here we stayed here. I loved staying here as service was cool, room was spacious and its in a great location. Vintage furniture dresses the rooms which gives it a good look. Very classic wood bar within the dining space that makes you feel like you are back in the 70s...pretty awesome! I had lunch here and it was very good...the crab cake sandwich is very good. Breakfast is good as well as I got to try the Chesapeake Omelet which has lump crab and asparagus inside...very good! I also got the very basic Berkeley Breakfast which includes two eggs and way and your choice of meat...was decent. I have heard from colleagues as well as staff that the Berkeley Benedict is the best thing on the menu. read more

Sadly, we were disappointed with our stay here. My partner and I decided to spend a couple of days in Richmond and booked with this hotel. Overall, I would say the experience is not worth the premium price and will most likely explore other accommodations the next time in town. Our biggest concerns were the COVID precautions/service. There were several instances where the staff were not wearing masks inside the building although there are many signs stating everyone must wear a cloth face covering. There is a rule that the front desk must know if you will need towels or linens by 2pm (place used ones outside), but the phone did not work properly to call down (phone/remote were not cleaned). We waited at the empty front desk each time for someone to help us and sometimes they would place them in a bag outside of your room, and others they would hand you select towels. It was a little confusing what the actual policy is. Any other recommendations for the hotel would be to possibly include a mini fridge in each unit and to invest in the plumbing- the hot water in the shower worked but was unreliable and the toilet was difficult to flush. We did enjoy the balcony which is shared with the room next door and found the bed to be extremely comfortable. The bathroom itself has a nice antique vibe and the hotel has a great location. We hope to return in the future but would not be comfortable doing so any time soon. read more

Paid about $40 more to stay here in a "premium room" and got shoved in this tiny dark room that's the same size as the bathroom, which has terrible water pressure, and hardly any walking space. This was after waiting 15 minutes for them to check us in with nobody else in the lobby. The front desk lady asked us to have a seat an I told her "I'm fine, I've been sitting for hours" her response was "well flip around here in your flip flops and let me do what I'm doing" the walls and sheets smell stale and dusty and there is no view as advertised in the pictures. There are 2 tiny trash bins with no bag in either one, as if the room never gets used and they just decided to put is here because they overbooked. I've stayed here twice, and it's not a bad hotel at all. The staff here are usually friendly, but can seem a bit annoyed at times. The rooms are pretty ok, not too special or anything. The bathrooms are a nice size and it doesn't get too crowded. I love the atmosphere of the building, it's very classy and nice. I'd stay again anytime I'm in Richmond, VA. read more

I'm not quite sure how to evaluate this hotel. The room itself was nice, and they were very nice to allow me an early check-in. (I was just hanging out in the lobby because I had arrived early and figured I was too early to check in.) The restaurant was very good in the hotel. So for those reasons, I would give them a five-star rating. But there was an ... incident. I was sitting in my room and thought I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. Then I saw it again. Then all of a sudden a huge cockroach ran across the room and under my bed. I called the front desk and a guy came up and sprayed a bunch of bug killer. The invading bug remained somewhere under the bed, but he said it was fine, that the spray would kill it. I wasn't satisfied with this solution since I had to sleep in the bed, so I eventually pulled the mattress and box springs from the wall, found the roach on the mattress, and killed it. Now, I'm not from an area where roaches abound, so maybe this is normal in the south and it's not a big deal. It may have been a fluke, so I feel guilty marking them down, but hey, it happened and it wasn't enjoyable. read more

The large patio overlooking the cobblestone streets below & newly remodeled Tobacco Company are picturesque. I look forward to my next stay. If I paid as much as others had to stay here, I'd probably be a lot less happy with the experience. However, I got a deal on Hotwire, so it was just a so so experience. The check-in experience was pleasant. Park around the corner at the garage (which is only 4.00 on the weekend)--valet is 35.00 a night for a SUV. Our room was pleasant enough, if a bit dated...other than the view. Looking out our window, about 10-15 feet away, was a plain brick wall and a rusted fire escape. The location is excellent--in the heart of Shockoe Bottom, there were a myriad of great bars, restaurants, and shops within a few blocks; a definite perk if you're in town for a night out. The hotel bar/restaurant itself were overpriced, and entirely unimpressive...which probably explains why there was only one couple in the entire bar at 7:30 on a Saturday night. With the Omni across the street, and at the same price point, however, they've got some stiff competition...I make it to Richmond every few months, and after seeing the Omni, I'll definitely be there next time. read more

I had to get off the highway. Road trip. I was exhausted. I got lucky when Ms. Alfreda answered the phone and got me booked in two connecting rooms within ten minutes and handed me the room keys to an oasis. Clean, spacious rooms greeted us and shut out the days frustrations. It was a relief that I could also have dinner downstairs in the hotel so I didn't have to drag my kids to another location in that car. The restaurant was just Eh! Maybe because it was a Monday night. Maybe because there was nobody else there but a single waitress and one table of two old biddies reliving their dead friends funerals. But I did not enjoy my meal at all. But that's a review I'll save for the restaurant itself, Cobblestone something or other. The valet and bellhop was extremely pleasant and helpful and even told me where I could park my car for free for the night right on the same block to avoid more costs. BET! Upon leaving I had the unfortunate experience of forgetting items in my room and also being locked out. The resourceful and clever Ms. Alfreda got me in quickly and in time for brunch. I'll never for this place. It saved my trip. Ms. Alfreda saves my sanity. read more

I was really looking forward to my stay at the Berkley. It sounded right up my alley: central, cozy, charming and all that jazz. Central, yes it is. Wonderful, super friendly and helpful staff? Yes indeedy. Cozy and charming? There were glimmers of that...mostly in the lobby. Maybe I just got a bad room, but my stay here was not too impressive or comfortable. My room was consistently way too cold and I had trouble adjusting the temperature. When I gave a call to the front desk, they diligently sent someone up immediately to adjust it. Unfortunately, by the middle of the night I was freezing again but decided to just suffer though it. Also, the pillows didn't offer much support and the bedding didn't help the shivers much. Additionally, there was a musk to the room that smelled like moth boths and smoke. The hotel definitely has an old town feel to it, so at first I thought perhaps some of it's flaws and less than polished feel had something to do with that. But then I realized that it opened in 1988 - not at old as I thought. Overall, I had a decent experience but would probably not stay here again. read more

My expectations were higher! For the price paid , I could have done better in a Hilton Garden in . They charge 21 dollars for valet parking or $35 for oversized but it is not necessary, you could find parking easily in the street . The breakfast is expensive and nothing to brag about . I had a much better breakfast at the Renaissance Hotels . The rooms are extra small, bathrooms are ver small and looks like a Hampton inn type of bathroom, I gave it a 3 stars because the service was good. I frequently stay in the Richmond area to visit my daughter in college. Wanted to have a different experience so I tried the Berkeley Hotel in downtown Richmond. Its located in hisotric Shockoe Slip. It's like stepping back in time with the cobble stone roads and historic architecture. Love this boutique hotel! The staff is very professional and accomdating. The room was huge with a large sitting area. Probably the largest hotel bathroom I have ever seen. Can't wait for the resteraunt and bar to open; I heard from a friend how awesome it was. If you have never been to Shockoe Slip; immediately outside your door are some of the top resteraunts in Richmond. I ate across the street at the Tobacco Company (delicous dinner). In the morning I had really good breakfast at a "farm to table" place called The Urban Farmhouse. I will definitely return the next time I am in town. read more

I choose the Berkeley Hotel after attempting to book the Omni for a few nights and finding that all their rooms were booked. The Berkeley is right across the street. Staying at the Berkeley gives you access to the YMCA in the Omni building. This was nice, but I was there on a very cold, unexpectedly snowy day in February and would have preferred not to have to run across the street in my gyms clothes (shorts and a t-shirt). It would have been nicer if the gym was located in the same building as the hotel, but this is a relatively small complaint. The décor was a bit stuffy, but overall it was a nice, well appointed hotel that was a pleasure to stay at. The women at the front desk were very friendly. Very outdated but the main disappointment was the lack of customer service and COVID-safe precautions with the front desk staff member we interacted with. First of all, she wasn't wearing a mask the whole time she checked me in. Not only with that interaction, but she was standing next to the front door and albeit told us to "have a good day" while we were walking out, but she wasn't wearing a mask at that time as well. There are plenty of signs requiring masks from hotel patrons, but I felt this hotel made no efforts in keeping their patrons safe. Secondly, we brought our dog and she made no mention or gave any notification that the hotel has a pet fee. I understand she may not have been required to notify us of the pet fee, but instead of making it seem like just a simple change of room, she should have mentioned that there would be a fee attached. With the lack of a proper mask and lack of customer service by the front desk attendant, in addition to the outdated feel of the hotel room, I would NOT recommend this hotel. Overall location of the hotel is nice. Close to everything, however parking is a bit of a hassle. The room sizes are decent and the bedding is comfortable! No microwave or fridge which is a bit odd but we managed! I met a family member here, and they had checked in a day prior. They did say they had cleanliness issues but addressed it with the staff. My low rating comes from covid concerns and the attitude of the staff. Staff did not always have masks on, and while I understand it is uncomfortable (I manage restaurants and wear one 18+ hrs a day so I understand), it is still necessary, especially when in view of guests. Additionally, when I arrived late Wednesday evening, while waiting in the lobby for my family, the staff was having a rather loud conversation on the other corner of the front desk. While they were not visible, the conversation was almost clear as day. The woman was complaining about a guest in detail to her coworkers. Extremely unprofessional. During these unprecedented times, guests can check in anywhere that they feel have safe covid procedures, hospitality however is what will set you apart from the competition. I would not recommend this hotel at this time to individuals looking in the area. read more
