Overall location of the hotel is nice. Close to everything, however parking is a bit of a hassle. The room sizes are decent and the bedding is comfortable! No microwave or fridge which is a bit odd but we managed! I met a family member here, and they had checked in a day prior. They did say they had cleanliness issues but addressed it with the staff. My low rating comes from covid concerns and the attitude of the staff. Staff did not always have masks on, and while I understand it is uncomfortable (I manage restaurants and wear one 18+ hrs a day so I understand), it is still necessary, especially when in view of guests. Additionally, when I arrived late Wednesday evening, while waiting in the lobby for my family, the staff was having a rather loud conversation on the other corner of the front desk. While they were not visible, the conversation was almost clear as day. The woman was complaining about a guest in detail to her coworkers. Extremely unprofessional. During these unprecedented times, guests can check in anywhere that they feel have safe covid procedures, hospitality however is what will set you apart from the competition. The room I booked for one night was with balcony, as soon as I went out of the room I noticed that there is a huge wall blocking the view from balcony. When I asked the front desk to change my room, the answer is - no other rooms with balcony are available, also the lady in the front desk said here is nothing to see from balcony. The room itself is smelling, the ceiling has some water leaking marks on it. Very disappointed with the stay and I will certainly not recommend my friends. read more

I frequently stay in the Richmond area to visit my daughter in college. Wanted to have a different experience so I tried the Berkeley Hotel in downtown Richmond. Its located in hisotric Shockoe Slip. It's like stepping back in time with the cobble stone roads and historic architecture. Love this boutique hotel! The staff is very professional and accomdating. The room was huge with a large sitting area. Probably the largest hotel bathroom I have ever seen. Can't wait for the resteraunt and bar to open; I heard from a friend how awesome it was. If you have never been to Shockoe Slip; immediately outside your door are some of the top resteraunts in Richmond. I ate across the street at the Tobacco Company (delicous dinner). In the morning I had really good breakfast at a "farm to table" place called The Urban Farmhouse. I will definitely return the next time I am in town. read more

What was supposed to be a long overdue girls trip, turned out to be one of the most inconvenient and upsetting experiences. I SPECIFICALLY chose the Berkeley Hotel based on the wonderful reviews and location. I was traveling with 4 other girlfriends and they had a beautiful suite (online) to accommodate us. Within 10 min of arrival the toilet overflowed. They sent a handy man up to clean up and reseal the toilet promptly but it happened 2 more times. The following morning, (today) we all showered and our toilet began to gurgle. There was water all over the floor, (clear water thank god). We called down to the front desk to find out what our options are. Five women in one suite with one bathroom that is not functional --is not an option. The front desk rep was rude and short. The woman at the front desk, whose name slips my mind, really should reconsider her career in hospital or be pulled for a refresher in customer service training because speaking to her on the phone was unpleasant. We were told they could "fix" it or move our items to another room while we proceeded with our afternoon plans. We chose to have them try and fix it again since we were not comfortable with them moving our belongings to another room. We returned after a wonderful day of museums and brunch to a room that wreaked of sewage water. The toilet again was making gurgling sounds and at this point I could no longer risk another backup/plumbing problem. Long story short, we checked out early and got refunded for what should of been our last night. For such a beautiful location the accommodations lacked. The room had charm and was spacious however, it was dirty. The heat was very dry leaving us to wake up with sinus issues. It was dusty beyond measure along the vents and the bathroom makeup mirror was slightly loose. I can't in good faith recommend this hotel. I did not feel any hospitality while there. And if you do stay, don't stay In room 204. read more

We recently stayed at the Berkeley Hotel as part of a 50th anniversary trip. The hotel is small and "quaint". The room was not overly large, but very comfortable. The staff was amazing. They went out of our way to see that we had a good stay. We had a minor issue, but after I mentioned it to a maintenance guy, it was fixed immediately. Parking is an issue as it is in Shockoe Bottom -- very crowded area -- but the bellmen were outstanding. The dining room food was excellent. I would definitely put the Berkeley on the short list when I return to Richmond. read more

I waited over a week to review the Berkeley simply because I needed that long to cool off and reflect on my not-so-positive experience. The hotel itself? Totally fine. Nothing fancy when it comes to room decor or amenities, but definitely fits the bill for a place to crash downtown. The hotel's ability to fulfill a reservation as promised? Severely lacking. Let me back up. We reserved 3 rooms, each with 2 queen beds, directly through the hotel's website. Last time our group's organizer stayed at the Berkeley, she had issues with the rooms. She had booked through Expedia (or a similar travel website) and when she checked in she was told her room type wasn't guaranteed because she hadn't booked directly through the hotel website. She was annoyed but figured it was a lesson learned. Fast forward to this stay. She purposefully booked through Berkeley's website (heeding the advice of the hotel staff) so that we would be guaranteed 3 rooms with 2 queen beds each. On top of that, she called on Tuesday prior to our Saturday stay and spoke with a manager. The manager assured her that our rooms would each have 2 queen beds and our reservation was guaranteed. Well what do you think happened when we checked in on Saturday? We were told that only one room had 2 queen beds, while the other two rooms each had a king. (This is exactly what happened during my friend's previous stay... perhaps this is common practice? Or it's a fluke that just happened to occur twice...). And the hotel was completely booked, it was Memorial Day weekend after all, so there was no way for us to be given any other rooms. We were livid, to say the least. In an attempt to rectify the situation, the hotel ended up comping one of our rooms and sending a bottle of champagne to each room (this is only after we made it clear that we weren't too happy with the situation). I did appreciate them trying to make our stay better after such a rocky start, but it's just not enough to make me stay there again. Additionally, I needed to have my key card reprogrammed later that night, so I made my way to the lobby only to discover that there was only one employee on duty. One employee. On Memorial Day weekend. Are you kidding me?? During the few minutes I stood at the front desk I watched this poor guy take a phone call from a seemingly upset guest, another phone call from a guest requesting towels (to which he responded that he would bring the towels up as soon as he could. He was the only person on duty, after all, so everything was his responsibility) and reprogram my key card, all while guests traipsed in and out of the lobby. Huge props to him for maintaining his composure during what I can only imagine was a super stressful evening. On a positive note, the front desk attendant who reprogrammed my card was extremely friendly, as was the guy who delivered our champagne. I felt a tad sorry for the employee who checked us in, as the room mix-up wasn't his fault (a fact that we acknowledged multiple times). Because the staff was friendly and the hotel did try to accommodate for their error, I'll give the Berkeley 3 stars. Really I'd like to give them a 2.5, but that's not possible. I love boutique hotels, and choose to stay in them (or in B&Bs) whenever I have the option. I really wanted to love the Berkeley- especially since the location is prime and I always prefer local to large chains. So, so, so very much disappointment! I really didn't want this! I was very much looking forward to the stay here. King Suite with terrance. The online photos and description sounded absolutely heavenly. That is, until we checked in. The Terrance is shared. 2 rooms and the lobby have an entrance to the terrance. But I could live with that. Now where it all came tumbling down was check in. Pros : Great service. Staff was very attentive. Negatives : Creepy Centipede and spiders under bathroom sink. Huge disgusting stain on pillow after the protector popped open. Bathroom door kept jamming on the toilet. Quite a small bathroom. Valet & ONLY Parking was $21 a night when people who dined at restaurant paid nothing for Valet? I flew in from Los Angeles. Was on vacation and avoided to complain about it during my stay. I did not want a technician during my rest to fix all these issues. Glad I only stayed for two nights and went somewhere else. Please fix these issues!!!! It's truly lovely (exterior), but other than that. Nothing. Ps. We did call for an issue when our lock to the terrance door would be difficult to lock. I had the worst experience here. They ruined my car with the valet and laughed at me. It was one of the most terrible things I've been through. I was put up at the Berkeley hotel for work with my now wife. I got to the hotel around 10pm and used the valet accordingly. The next morning, I got my car back, it smelt of burnt rubber and it wouldn't move. Clutch was fried! There was also a bunch of soda cans and wrappers in it. I told the manager Denny Pierce and he laughed at me. A local mechanic told me it seems the valet didn't know how to drive a manual and rode it with the ebrake on and destroyed the clutch. I even had the mechanic that I had to car towed to speak with Denny and they said he was very rude. My advice is stay away. I travel for work and never had this terrible of an experience. It cost me $1100. Also, my neighbors at the hotel overheard my initial conversation with Denny and said he was outright rude and unaccomodating to their parents staying at the hotel who are in their 80s when the a/c didn't work. Go to the Jefferson. I've moved there now when I go to Richmond. read more

I really enjoyed my stay at the Berkeley Hotel during the fourth of July weekend. If traveling during the summer, the hotel is located on a cobblestone street downtown amongst great nightlife. Everything you might need is located nearby. There is a Seven-Eleven on the next block up. In terms of restaurants, there are countless ones around in walking distance. Then for the best part of the location...the night life. Within walking distances you have a huge number of bars, clubs, and lounges available. Apparently I lucked out picking this hotel because of the location. By simply walking out the door of the hotel I had many options to hang out in terms of venue and crowd. The only negative was the time everything closes down. Richmond downtown shuts down at 2. The hotel has nothing to do with that though. Regarding the service and staff, everyone was lovely and made my stay comfortable. I can't speak too much on the rooms because I didn't spend much time there. However, they provide robes, coffee machine, pretty good smelling soap that I was sure to use, and something I'm not use to seeing at hotels, both male and female scented hand sanitizer. read more

This is a nice, old-fashioned hotel right in one of Richmond's most historic districts. The rooms are showing a bit of age, this is an older hotel, but they are spacious and very clean. The front-desk staff are friendly and willing to help. They'll call you a taxi, recommend restaurants or hep in any other way they can. Because it's not the newest hotel, I'd probably be more likely to go if I found a good deal online than to pay full retail price. If I was going for a grand old-fashioned feel, I'd go to the Jefferson, and I'd probably pick one of the newer downtown hotels for more of a modern, amenities-focused experience, but that's just me. This is a perfect place if you like staying in place with more of a character-filled feel. You can walk to lots of bars, restaurants and shops in downtown Richmond. The hotel is in a nice, central location. This is the place to stay for a quiet weekend. The atmosphere is relaxing/romantic. Don't come here if you are looking to party. A stayed here once with a group for a bachelorette party, and naturally, we were up late with the giggles. We weren't being super disruptive, but we were talking and laughing a lot. I don't think the sound-proofing is all that great. We got yelled at repeatedly by the staff. I understand this: there were other guests at the hotel, but I just wanted to let prospective guests here know they should go with a chain with better sound-proofing if they are going to be chatty. read more

A boutique hotel compared to the Omni across the street. What this hotel lacks in size they make up for with their staff. They were all extremely professional and courteous. This is the most inexpensive 4 diamond hotel in Richmond. We were brought some great dark chocolates for turn down service along with a small note card giving us the forecast for the next day-highs and lows. It's little things like this that make a lasting memory and difference when booking hotels. I did not have the chance to eat at their restaurant, but in looking at the menu it looked pretty good. The front desk staff was very accommodating. We had a problem with the safe in the room and it was fixed upon our return. The rooms are great and the beds are very comfortable. This hotel has one feature that I find absent in 90% of the hotels we stay. Accessible outlets. You never know how badly your phone and laptop need power as when you have to start relocating furniture in another hotel chain just to plug your items in. The Berkeley hotel had 4 easily located outlets out in the open. It made ironing clothes and charging our accessories very easy. The valet parking, while a bit pricey makes life easy for storing your vehicle and is definitely on par with the hotels in the area. We will stay here again our next go round. The location, the staff and the rooms are great. The only couple knocks against this hotel are that there is no gym, and no pool. I really enjoyed my stay here. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating - it spoke volumes to me that there was always a staff member at the front door ready to open it whenever i walked in or out. It's the little things. They have valet parking which is $21/day, or you can park in the nearby parking garage for $14/night. However, I didn't experience any issues using street parking. Right outside is 2 hour parking (which ends at 6p, and has no limit on weekends). I was able to find a parking spot here multiple times at different times of day - I even went over the 2 hour time limit (accidentally) a couple times on a Monday between 8a and 1p, and wasn't ticketed. Parking really isn't a problem. The hotel is located right in the heart of the historic district of Richmond, and it was so quaint and fun to wander around. I found 2 great coffee shops within walking distance, a delicious place for breakfast, and another place for lunch right within walking distance. The location couldn't be more ideal. The room itself was very nice and extremely clean. Even has a little notecard telling you the forecast for the next day, with chocolates for each person staying in the room. Again, it's the little things. If I had any criticism, it would be that the shower had VERY low water pressure. I had to take an abnormally long shower in order to get all the shampoo and conditioner out of my hair. The other person staying in the room with me had the same issue when she showered the night before. Additionally, the description mentions that there is a fitness center, which is untrue. They are affiliated with the YMCA and will give you a guest pass, but it's not nearly as convenient as it would be to have an on-site exercise room. Overall, this was a really pleasant and enjoyable experience. I would certainly stay here again if I come back to Richmond. read more

Like some of the other reviewers, I struggled with picking a star rating. My husband and I checked in about 3 hours ago and we were both impressed with the quality of the room considering how much we paid for it. The room is spacious with a big bathroom and appears to be clean. The wi-fi is fast and TV comes with all the basic cable channels plus a couple of premium channels. However, now it's 1:15 am in the morning and I am having trouble sleeping because our room is right across the street from a nightclub. For the last hour or so, the music has only gotten louder, punctuated by the occasional drunk patrons shouting at each other. For this time of the night, there also seems to be a constant stream of cars driving down the street. I wonder if those are the rides for the people partying at the nightclub. I read more

Often overlooked but the equal of any hotel in Richmond (save for maybe the Jefferson) the boutique Berkeley Hotel offers guests a consistent AAA 4 Diamond status. This is a small hotel comprising only 55 rooms and it feels intimate. The dining room is well appointed and comprises the Southwest corner of the main floor. There is a small bar and cocktail area adjacent. The entry and front desk are compact and efficient. The hotel is spotless and well maintained. I recently spent the night with my sister who was in town for business and she had a great corner room overlooking The Tobacco Company Restaurant. You really get a feel of history even though the building dates from just 1988. Some of the rooms even come with terraces to further take in the magic and vibrant history of Shockoe Slip. The room was huge and they had free wi fi. I most appreciated the corner aspect due to the proliferation of windows. Most, if not all rooms have high ceilings which adds to the feeling of spaciousness and overall charm. Oh, and the sheets are Frette! The thick and fluffy goose down pillows made me feel as if I were sleeping at home. How many hotels in Richmond can say that! Super comfortable sleeping for sure. read more

Wonderful old school charm boutique hotel with a friendly and helpful staff. I'd say it's a better location for walking then the ole school standard down the street a few blocks. The bellhop even helped us avoid the overnight parking change which we appreciated. We stayed in a nicely appointed room with a balcony over looking Cary Street. The only thing i would change is to add dividers between ALL the balconies. When i walked out on the balcony in my pjs it was only slightly creepy when our neighbor said "i like your jammies". My husband and I spent the night at the Berkeley Hotel a few weekends ago and we loved the look of the hotel, it was clean, well maintained, the staff was very friendly and the location was ideal for Schockoe Bottom. Breakfast at the hotel was great also. It rained heavily on Saturday night right before we left for dinner and our umbrella was in our vehicle. We called down to the front desk and asked to use an umbrella. As we left for dinner the desk attendant handed us a large red umbrella (I believe it was a Wells Fargo). When we returned the umbrella, I had to question 'why the Wells Fargo umbrella ??'. So the lady at the front desk informed us that a staff member gave us her personal umbrella to use. My accommodations were paid for so I can't speak to the value of the hotel (as related to the cost), but I can say that the staff were extraordinarily friendly and accommodating, and they went above and beyond to make sure my stay was an enjoyable one. My husband, daughter and I stayed at The Berkeley last week, having gotten an excellent price for a Saturday night through hotels.com. I was expecting the hotel to frown on our bringing a two year old, but they didn't bat an eye- in fact, everyone was super nice and helpful. The bellman in particular was great- he helped us up with all our bags, valeted our car, and even helped me with my daughter (who was asleep on my shoulder). The crib we asked for was in the room when we checked in, and though the room wasn't the biggest, it was very luxurious and clean. We got free breakfast as part of our package, and it was amazing. Our servers were so nice and helpful with my daughter, the food was great, and overall- I'd HIGHLY recommend this hotel. The only downside is parking in the area is hard to come by, and valeting your car is $20+ per night. There's a lot up the street, so you can park there and maybe save some cash... but if you have a sleeping kid and lots of bags like I did, valeting is probably worth it. read more

Next to the Jefferson, this is one of the best hotels in the city for visitors. Locals love the restaurant here, but visitors love the great location and complimentary limo service around town. It's small but very elegant and charming, with period furnishings and luxury amenities, and you can walk all around lower Cary Street and Shockoe Bottom or to nearby attractions. Both the hotel and restaurant regularly make the best-of lists locally and on top travel websites. read more

Pros: Great location in Richmond. Within walking distance to some of my great food spots. Cons: -Not the friendliest staff, however a couple of staff members were very nice so don't want to take points away from those wonderful folks. -Some of the fixtures needed to be repaired in the room. While this is a great location, I think the Omni offers a better deal. BUT, since I don't like supporting groups who are anti-gay by giving $$ to NOM, I don't support the Omni. Therefore, I'm not sure where to stay when I return to Richmond. Sigh. I will say that the friendliness at Berkeley got a little better as the stay went on. There was also an odd set of negativity from some of the guests who seemed to have an air of privilege and snobbery. Not sure what that was about but when I explained it to a few Richmond folks, they told me it may be because it is a boutique catered to the older European crowd with money...Who knows. read more

I was in town for a wedding that started at 4 PM. Asked for an early check in a few days early, didnt get one so I ended up changing in the mens room in the basement. My room was dingy, dust build up in the registers and returns. My bed was like a slingshot. no water pressure in the shower, no fridge. I wont be returning. Richmond is full of great hotels. I've had better service at Holiday Inn Express. Having said that, I planned this trip as a getaway for my boyfriend's birthday. He's artsy and I love Richmond - so, win-win. I chose this hotel because I couldn't afford to stay at The Jefferson. I set this up, personally, with Lillian. She included valet parking for free and since I'm a AAA member, breakfast was included. I chose to stay in a king room with a balcony overlook, $200/night. The room was small, there was no refrigerator or microwave and the ice machine didn't work. On the flip side, the bathroom was nice and they provided robes (I'm easy). The balcony was okay, but overall it didn't make up for the lack of amenities. Let's fast forward to breakfast - as much as they hyped it up...disappointment! I'm Vegan, so options were limited. I had cereal and my boyfriend had corned beef hash and potatoes. It was dry and they ran out of ketchup. Also, everything was very expensive and no refills on these tiny glasses of apple juice. Then came checkout. It was even more displeasing to have to reiterate that valet and breakfast were included in my stay because they had charged me for those things. If you're planning a getaway, I wouldn't go here. Save your money and go to Holiday Inn Express. Same great downtown location and less costly. read more

AVERAGE HOTEL, NOT FOUR STAR QUALITY Smells, like very old hotel I've been awakened before I'd have cared to by loud housekeeping staff - slamming doors, shoving things into walls, generally making it pretty hard to sleep. Beds are not COMFORTABLE, the heat doesn't work I was freezing. Housekeeper comes into my room and the DND sign is on, no good. This AM was so loud I would have actually thought they were conducting construction or something in there. Hotel Internet and phone are terrible! there is no refrigerator in the rooms. Do NOT stay here there, The Omni across street is so much nicer, same rate I would give 5 stars to the Omni Hotel. read more

I realize its downtown but $21 nightly for parking is not a welcome addition. Especially when I wrote to the hotel beforehand via email about any other options and never received a reply. Also, don't appreciate the brick wall view two feet out my window for $200+/night. Didn't realize we had booked the "Brick Wall Suite" Don't expect to have a nightcap at the hotel. The good has to be the convenient location to the best of Richmond has to offer, comfortable bed and good customer service... close to government building and capital. The bad has to be parking but that is expected in a city ($35/night) and the food is very small and expensive.. but we were offered free breakfast vouchers so that was a bonus. The rooms are small, low light not ideal for business, enjoyment and rest only. My rooms water pressure was the terrible, could not wash soap off. Anywho, the I walked in and was greeted almost immediately and I asked for a coffee. My waiter kept my mug no less than full my entire stay. Soon, the food came and I was amazed! I ordered from the brunch menu, which came with steak, little cubed potatoes, 2 fried eggs and a biscuit. Everything tasted like home cooking! I didn't have to pick up the salt or pepper for the meal and thoroughly enjoyed all of it, from the server to the food. Will be back if possible. read more

Beautiful room. It's probably the second nicest hotel in Richmond, and a good backup plan if the nicest one is completely booked, which is how we ended up here. King sized beds are very comfortable with nice bedding. The showers are roomy enough for 2. It's location is also perfect! read more
