I stayed for two nights and the second night with a chair pushed against the door as Security arrived a few hours earlier to check on a leak complaint from the room below. I did not hear a knock as may be expected emerging from a shower and in the middle of.drying off, TV blasting and yet I heard the door open. He was standing there I was naked and afraid and not like the reality show. He asked me if there was running water or leaking neither of which or I would have also called the Front Desk. There are numerous reviews stating leaking problems and it does not surprise me, walking into a room without calling first does. When I went down to the Front Desk to ask about this the two individuals knew NOTHING about said complaint/leak and said policy was to knock three times. That was the best they could offer. If they did not know how did Security know about the leak and go the room without checking to see if the room was vacant etc? Again the stories never added up as I asked the Night Clerk had she heard of this and did they go into my room while I was out for the night as that too concerned me. She too had heard nothing about any of it. So with that you add to the darkness of the room itself an interior view of walls of the building they are demolishing adjacent to the hotel. The overall griminess that no shower can rid you of the feel. A Room not refreshed the next day from cups to coffee, but the bed made, the few towels I had used replaced but it was still just dingy, as I arrived late Tuesday and thankfully did not shower that night but the Bar had no white wine and along with that there is NOTHING close Downtown after 8 that is remotely accessible other than three shady poorly maintained Bodegas. The nearest bar a dive and the Hotel itself is surrounded by fencing due to the Construction so access is challenging but a walk down 9th street you will see a sign affixed to the door on the abandoned building directly next door and it says "............ POOP HERE PLEASE". the Do Not blacked out. I think that says a lot as at night it is as empty as it is during the day frankly. Other than the Hotel there is a Starbucks in the Omni and another coffee shop in the Shockoe area that is open at 8 am. And trust me that place makes the worst coffee and frozen bagel ever. It is desolate until you get closer to the water or go into the Arts District to find decent food. Shocking for a Southern City frankly. All in all Richmond has an amazing outdoor Amphitheater that is a year old and a fantastic Art Museum along with free city buses that at least during the day you can get around. The Amtrak Terminal is "interesting" but it is car town clearly. The Hotel was convenient to it and the stadium but it is deep need of a cleaning and a remodeling of fixtures and plumbing clearly. read more

The positives: - great central downtown location - spacious rooms - friendly and attentive staff The negatives: - shower pressure non-existent - fecal remnants in toilet upon arrival - empty shower gel bottle/had to wash body with shampoo - toilet paper clearly was dropped in some water so it did not unroll/had to call the desk for fresh sterile rolls - overall cleanliness of room was subpar (orange slime and black mold in caulk and grout in shower and around sink faucet) - musty mildewy odor in room This is not what I would expect for a nearly $400/night room. The check in process was quick and easy. Everything was ready for me once I arrived. The front desk staff was always kind and courteous. Greeting me with a smile everyday. Upon arrival the hotel is beautiful. The lobby was spectacular. The oversized windows. The slated floor. The blacks, marble and gold. Art work lining the walls. The furnishings. It gives historic yet modern. The downside is this hotel isn't well maintained. There is a lot of room for improvements. Paint touch ups a few updates. Nothing major. The elevators are a little tight. Barley fitting 4 people and if you have luggage, forget about it. I loved the layout of the room. The bathroom was spacious. And the couch was comfortable. The bed was perfect. But I did not like that I had an obstructed view. There was zero direct sunlight, I always thought it was dark out. The window was facing the brick building next door(pictured). I did have to find the refrigerator and microwave, it's hidden away in the built-ins. The parking is full valet. So if you aren't looking to valet every night this stay isn't for you. But the valet is swift. I never waited more than 5 minutes for my car to come around. Though this hotel has cons. It's conveniently located. Within in walking distance of some of the best restaurants and bars in the city. Highly recommend La Grotta. read more

Room was clean enough, but the tub had a partially clogged drain. The shower handle shifts within the wall when used. The faucet leaks significantly when turned off. Elevators are tiny. Lights above our bed were different colors. Doors were creaky and wouldn't shut all the way. Bathroom door would not lock. Windows were visibly dirty. Found the back of an earring on the carpet, which makes me question if it was vacuumed before my stay. My neck hurts after I woke up this morning. Additionally, They lost our car key and it took over an hour and a half to find them... on top of the 20 minutes advanced notice we gave them by requesting it over the phone before coming down. They were very apologetic and comped our stay... so they get a bit of a pass on that unfortunate mistake, but the overall experience was not what I was expecting from this price point. read more

Can't go wrong with this hotel! The staff was so nice, knowledgeable and courteous. The daytime valet was so kind to my family and very prompt with his service. The staff knew our name every time we came in contact with them which was such a nice friendly touch! NOTE - (They only provide valet parking) The suite we booked for three adults and two children was very spacious and clean. There was a small living room with a TV, nice sized Mini Fridge, couch and seats. The bedroom had two beds, a TV and a pretty big closet. The bathroom had plenty of room for two people to get ready. The location of this hotel is right across from the State Capitol building and we found it to be a convenient for walking to most of the sites we had planned to visit. It was also blocks from a few family friendly places to eat. The downstairs restaurant was only serving a simple breakfast due to staffing shortages, but the staff they did have was awesome and so nice to my kids. We made it a point to eat breakfast there because of how kind they were. This place checked all the boxes for me, great location and value for being in a downtown, neat historic building with some cool stories dating back to before the Civil War, perfect staff and a very nice room. If you visit Richmond please book this place, you won't be disappointed! read more

A last minute work trip to downtown Richmond is what prompted my stay at The Commonwealth. The location was hard to beat being just two blocks from the office I was visiting and across the street from the Virginia Capitol building for site seeing. It also helped that the price I found online was unbelievably good ($113 per night before taxes and fees). Given how ghost town-like the downtown was, I can only image the price and availability was due to lack of customers caused by COVID-19 and recent civil unrest in their downtown. Regardless, I was happy it worked out well. For $113 per night I feel like I got an absolute steal on the room. The bed was among the softest I've slept on in a hotel, which is a HUGE plus for me. I appreciated having a refrigerator for leftover food I bought back the first night and the microwave would have been useful had I had a plate to put my food on (microwaving foam containers isn't always a good idea). Since it was only me on the trip I didn't use both TVs simultaneously (one in the living area, one in the bedroom), but it was nice having the option of where to sit to relax. I thought the bathroom was stylish with the glass doors and walk-in shower instead of being a standard tub. I was surprised that the room wasn't serviced during the day between the two nights of my trip. More disturbing was the used latex glove laying outside the door across from mine during the entire trip. Clearly that meant no one service wise had come though for multiple days. The hotel lobby was no frills. There were a couple of couches to sit on, but otherwise I thought it felt small. I wasn't crazy about the high prices for items in their commissary either ($3 for a can of soda is ridiculous). The elevators were tiny compared to any others I've ever been in. The bartender in their restaurant seemed like a nice guy, but the restaurant was completely empty and he may have been more excited than usual to see a customer. I also thought the various staff members at the service desk were very helpful. As I mentioned, the hotel was across the street from the Virginia Capitol building and the park surrounding it. I found a couple restaurants nearby that I enjoyed and the canal walk was an interesting site to walk to and through. I don't know if I'll ever end up visiting Richmond again or what the price and availability will be at that time if I do, but I'd certainly look up The Commonwealth again if the need arises. read more

Honestly, disappointed. Pros: This place had nice big rooms. A bit of Richmond vibe. Location is good. Cons: Lukewarm showers with hot water at maximum on faucet. Parking is expensive ($30) Front desk had some confusion if our second car was still here and had to call us about it when we never moved it. Front desk also was confused about what room were supposed to be in and called about it. We didn't have to move rooms, thankfully. Asked for a late checkout and was told 'maybe' and to wake up to call at 730AM to ask. I've never been declined an extra hour at any hotel and I travel quite a bit. The elevators are so small, that a luggage cart and a person can only fit. On checkout, it took ten minutes to catch a ride from the fifth floor down. Literally. People were waiting at every floor. Overall, when you're staying at a place that's $200+ a night, the little things need to be nailed and they just weren't. There weren't any extras. At checkout, not asked how the stay was, but extra attention was made to make sure we paid for everything. It's not that it was bad, but for the price point, it was pretty ho hum. Would have been better off staying at a nicer chain hotel. At least there would have been free breakfast. read more

The staff was very welcoming and professional. I would have rated it a 4 but once we reached our room we noticed there was cigarette smell which is odd considering it is a non smoking hotel. Gorgeous hotel! Comfy beds and very clean. For parking they have valet 24/7, just pull up in front of the hotel where it's blocked off on Bank street. Parking is $28 for 24 hours but they will get your car as often as needed ( just remember to give a few dollars tips each time). They do have some nearby parking garages and parking on the street on Sunday is free but has to be moved by 7 am next day. Check in clerk and valet were so incredibly friendly and genuine. Nice big room at a reasonable price - this hotel is at the center of RVA with many restaurants in walking distance. Front desk was extremely nice and provided us with dining recommendations. Shower was leaking and making an irritable noise but we covered it up with a towel. King bed was very nice and comfortable. The carpeted floor however had some stains and did not feel very clean. Valet parking is $28 - street parking worked for us but only because we left before 7am. read more

The pros: The staff here was outstanding from the moment we walked in the door. From knowing us by name, to going above and beyond to ensure I had my favorite dry shampoo waiting in the room for us, to the pristine cleanliness of our suite, to personally following up with us to make sure our requests were met when we walked through the lobby, it's hard to convey how deep an exhale we both let out when we stayed here. Easily the best hotel staff we've run across in the past 4 years. We should also note that, unlike most hotel photos, the rooms in this hotel are quite a bit more spacious in person that they appear in the photos. Our room was very large. My college apartment was smaller than the suite we were in. The bedroom has a full closet. The "mini" fridge is large enough for two nights worth of leftovers, the bathroom is large enough for 2 adults to get ready and never get in each others' way. Each room has vaulted ceilings just begged us to play the echo game (which we gladly did). The staff also provided a list of places to eat as well. They also made sure to have the needed technology hooked up for me, I'm deaf so this was a plus. Cons: Parking. You'll have to valet. The garage is at the bottom of the hill and there is no self-parking. This isn't a big deal for a downtown hotel, but it's worth noting as a lot of the local sites are just out of comfortable walking distance. The restaurant is open for breakfast, but closes before "brunch" hours, so we never got a chance to check it out. There is no dine-in room service either, so make sure to keep your favorite delivery app close if you're a late night eater. Overall, we can't recommend this hotel enough. Great staff. Great property. Great location. We'll be sure to return the next time we're in Richmond read more

Nightmarish. Didn't sleep a wink last night. There is a huge HVAC unit located just outside our (and others) room window. Every 32 seconds, this jet-engine sounding, cacophonous, roaring beast from the deepest pit of Hell turns on and runs for 22 seconds. I stayed at The Commonwealth for my cousin's wedding weekend and it was very relaxing to say the least. The valet greeted us with a positive attitude. He was super chatty and friendly! The room felt more like a suite than a basic hotel room. The living room was separate from the bedroom which made it look more like a suite. The bathroom was nicely furnished and the beds were oh so comfortable! The AC unit made rattling noises but I'm a heavy sleeper so this wasn't an issue. The staff and housekeeping delivered an outstanding customer service. FYI the elevator is tiny, no more than 2 people will fit unfortunately. Many restaurants within walking distance of the hotel and a cute dog park is located across the street. Speaking of dogs, the hotel is pet friendly! I highly recommend if you're looking for a comfortable stay in Richmond. read more

Well, my first time staying here was great. This hotel is safe and very private I will say so you won't have to worry about your safety for the most part. They service was awesome and I loved my room. I booked one of the biggest rooms through Priceline at a cheaper price and I'm glad I did. One star subtracted for lack of privacy (kids in the adjoining room who weren't especially noisy - a door with gaps around the facing prevented privacy) and watered-down shampoo & shower gel (but I did bring my own to use in such a situation). The room was fairly nice and clean. The staff was very friendly and polite. My main issues are the "restaurant" and I use that term loosely. While polite the bar staff could not make basic drinks or drinks on the signature menu. It was all severely over poured and I'm a big guy so that's a bit hard. The food menu did not sound appealing but I still gave the hush puppies a try. Not good. I also made the mistake of taking up the weekend breakfast buffet. Day 1 bacon waffle sticks and scrambled eggs, Day 2 sausage French toast sticks and eggs. Nowhere does it list a price but if you make the mistake of getting it it runs $15 a person. Not worth $5. This is the reason you'll notice the bar area is empty and nobody eats there. I say all this as a profession restaurant consultant and owner. read more

I really wanted to like this place. First off Nicole at the front desk is awesome! She was very friendly, was patient when our reservation didn't immediately show up, and upgraded us to a suite. The valets were efficient, the maid staff was curteous, and a guy brought up sheets quickly when we asked for new ones. Problem was the sheets were well passed their prime. We also found a couple of hairs and stains in them. The tub also didn't drain properly at first until they fixed it. The hair dryer and towel warmer didn't work well either. Lastly the tv was a good sized LCD, but most of the channels weren't in HD. Overall I wish they put a little more money into the place and I would gladly come back. Until then though... read more

Very impressed by the service. I'm not one to be needy however I arrived at 10:30 PM the same Valley man was working the next morning the next evening the next morning again and on top of this he was running to get the car each time very hard-working individuals and we like that. The front desk was also very friendly and very helpful every time we call down. I do know that the elevators are very very small almost in enough to fit two people their baggage on hand and nothing more however our room was amazingly beautiful from the website you can tell that each room is very individualized.I wouldn't be surprised if the next day filled completely different based on the pictures since each room is so unique it almost feels like you're when one big mansion in every room is for a different person or family member. read more

First time stay at the Comminwealth and it was fabulous. The hotel staff, chef, managers and the parking attendant, all were very warm and inviting. I had an issue with my TV cable one morning when I was leaving for the day and the next opportunity the hotel manager saw me she made sure everything was corrected and that I was satisfied with the result. She took the time to explain what happened, which I appreciated. They were all lovely and the hotel is beautiful and walking distance to a number of excellent restaurants and bars. Lots of legislators stay here because they can walk to work (it's directly across the street from the visitor entrance to the Capitol) and because it has large suites for extended stays. In its original incarnation, it was a bootlegging saloon with rooms like Miss Kitty's place on that old show "Gunsmoke". During the Civil War, there was a fire and it wasn't rebuilt until 1912. Don't worry...there have been extensive renovations since then and if you're going to be in town for longer than a few days and want to be downtown, it's a good option. read more

Will C. and I stayed at The Commonwealth for a quick weekend getaway in Richmond. The Commonwealth caught my eye when I was looking for places to stay because it had a boutique hotel feel. The room itself was HUGE and everything smelled very new. As others have mentioned, your living area is completely separate from the bedroom, so essentially you're staying in a suite. The bathroom was also generously sized with lots of counter space. I usually don't love hotel beds as some of them tend to be way too plush, but no issues with the bed here. I also appreciated the fact that both the bedroom and the living room come with huge TVs - definitely a plus if you don't feel like watching the same show as your roomie. I didn't want to leave this hotel the next morning as I felt like I didn't get to enjoy every nook and cranny, haha. The service was exceptional - everyone at the front desk was super friendly, and the folks working the valet were great! My one and only complaint is that the AC unit makes this really loud banging noise every hour or so, which made it hard to get a good night's sleep. However, everything else was just perfect. Highly recommend The Commonwealth if you need a place to stay in Richmond - it's also walking distance to a bunch of restaurants and cafes! - Valet is $25 a day, but you get unlimited in and out privileges. - Coffee, tea, and water are all from local VA vendors. read more

I'm also a big believer in good customer service, and everyone who works here did not disappoint. Great hotel right in the heart of downtown Richmond, it is directly across the street from the Capital building. It is also in walking distance to a couple of restaurants and bars. I had a room on the top floor and the room was large, the room is a suite, with a living area, bathroom and bedroom. The living room was spacious, the furniture is a little dated but the space is wide open and you get amazing views from the windows. Both the living room and bedroom have flat screen TVs, some of the channels are a little fuzzy so they might want to work on their cable provider. Bedroom is huge as well, with a huge king sized bed. Bed was comfortable. Plenty of space for several people if you want to take a road trip with a few people. Bathroom is a decent size and they have bidets which I find to be cool even if I don't really want to use one. The hotel offers free wifi and it works very well, easy to log in, fast speed, I give bonus points to any hotel that can over quality hotel for free. The hotel also offers valet parking for a reasonable price, my car was well taken care of and the staff fetched it for very quickly when I needed it. The hotel is older and one of the downsides is the elevator is very small and slow so you'll have to wait for it if the hotel is busy. Definitely a good hotel to stay at, while not overly fancy it is a great hotel for a decent price. read more

I've stayed here several times when visiting Richmond. It's an older hotel, but the rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. The bed was one of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever slept in. The staff is wonderful, very friendly and accommodating. One morning we went down to the café for breakfast and commented that we wished we could get some sausage gravy for our biscuits and the nice gentleman taking care of us whipped some right up - it was quite tasty too. The location is great - within walking distance to attractions, restaurants, bars and shops. In fact, it is located right across the street from the state capital. The price for the room is quite reasonable. My only con is the elevator is small, slow and at least one seemed to be out of order often. One night the fire alarm went off and everyone had to evacuate the hotel. I ended up walking up the stairs to the top floor rather than waiting for the elevator (the line of people waiting to get on was just too long). At least I got my exercise! read more

I stayed here for a wedding. My friend (the bride) booked a block of rooms with a supposedly discounted rate. I felt that the rate was a bit high and looked around and was able to find a 20 a night cheaper rate on a travel website. So that got me off on the wrong foot. I arrived at the hotel around 130p too early for check in but the front desk person said they could get me to my room by two. They have a pretty nice lobby setup so I was happy to wait. I actually ended up going to lunch with the bride but the front desk person was kind enough to hold my luggage for me. I came back around 4p and my luggage was safe and check in was a breeze. Now this was odd but the elevators are oddly small like only can hold 4 people and barely any luggage small. I had a king room. Large bathroom with bidet a flat screen TV, a super comfy bed, a fridge/micro, and a closet. The rooms was very nice! I didn't have any problems with my stay at all. My only complaint was that housekeeping would leave these heaps of dirty sheets in these massive piles in the hall way. Kind of unnecessary in my opinon. Also I had some trouble with getting the phone to work. But be warned this is an older property. Narrow hallways, tiny elevators. But you can beat the location. Right downtown. read more
