The check in process was quick and easy. Everything was ready for me once I arrived. The front desk staff was always kind and courteous. Greeting me with a smile everyday. Upon arrival the hotel is beautiful. The lobby was spectacular. The oversized windows. The slated floor. The blacks, marble and gold. Art work lining the walls. The furnishings. It gives historic yet modern. The downside is this hotel isn't well maintained. There is a lot of room for improvements. Paint touch ups a few updates. Nothing major. The elevators are a little tight. Barley fitting 4 people and if you have luggage, forget about it. I loved the layout of the room. The bathroom was spacious. And the couch was comfortable. The bed was perfect. But I did not like that I had an obstructed view. There was zero direct sunlight, I always thought it was dark out. The window was facing the brick building next door(pictured). I did have to find the refrigerator and microwave, it's hidden away in the built-ins. The parking is full valet. So if you aren't looking to valet every night this stay isn't for you. But the valet is swift. I never waited more than 5 minutes for my car to come around. Though this hotel has cons. It's conveniently located. Within in walking distance of some of the best restaurants and bars in the city. Highly recommend La Grotta.

If you need a luxurious, upscale, 5 star, spacious ,safe, clean, centrally located, all included amenities, and top notch service hotel, then the COMMONWEALTH HOTEL in Richmond Virginia is the spot. I stayed at the COMMONWEALTH for four days and absolutely LOVED IT. I felt like royalty and I plan to revisit next October. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Richmond Virginia. IT'S A MUST STAY!!! Terri R.

A last minute work trip to downtown Richmond is what prompted my stay at The Commonwealth. The location was hard to beat being just two blocks from the office I was visiting and across the street from the Virginia Capitol building for site seeing. It also helped that the price I found online was unbelievably good ($113 per night before taxes and fees). Given how ghost town-like the downtown was, I can only image the price and availability was due to lack of customers caused by COVID-19 and recent civil unrest in their downtown. Regardless, I was happy it worked out well. For $113 per night I feel like I got an absolute steal on the room. The bed was among the softest I've slept on in a hotel, which is a HUGE plus for me. I appreciated having a refrigerator for leftover food I bought back the first night and the microwave would have been useful had I had a plate to put my food on (microwaving foam containers isn't always a good idea). Since it was only me on the trip I didn't use both TVs simultaneously (one in the living area, one in the bedroom), but it was nice having the option of where to sit to relax. I thought the bathroom was stylish with the glass doors and walk-in shower instead of being a standard tub. I was surprised that the room wasn't serviced during the day between the two nights of my trip. More disturbing was the used latex glove laying outside the door across from mine during the entire trip. Clearly that meant no one service wise had come though for multiple days. The hotel lobby was no frills. There were a couple of couches to sit on, but otherwise I thought it felt small. I wasn't crazy about the high prices for items in their commissary either ($3 for a can of soda is ridiculous). The elevators were tiny compared to any others I've ever been in. The bartender in their restaurant seemed like a nice guy, but the restaurant was completely empty and he may have been more excited than usual to see a customer. I also thought the various staff members at the service desk were very helpful. As I mentioned, the hotel was across the street from the Virginia Capitol building and the park surrounding it. I found a couple restaurants nearby that I enjoyed and the canal walk was an interesting site to walk to and through. I don't know if I'll ever end up visiting Richmond again or what the price and availability will be at that time if I do, but I'd certainly look up The Commonwealth again if the need arises.

Gorgeous hotel! Comfy beds and very clean. For parking they have valet 24/7, just pull up in front of the hotel where it's blocked off on Bank street. Parking is $28 for 24 hours but they will get your car as often as needed ( just remember to give a few dollars tips each time). They do have some nearby parking garages and parking on the street on Sunday is free but has to be moved by 7 am next day. Check in clerk and valet were so incredibly friendly and genuine. Loved our stay!!

This monstrosity is 6 feet from our room window.

The cucumber sandwiches were on brown bread??? The chicken salad sandwiches were bland and boring and were served on regular thick white bread. The desserts also lacked sparkle. The best were the tiny chocolate mousse tart, and the tiny rectangular fruit tart. The macrons were delicious and probably the best thing about the tea. However, the rectangular fruit tart did not have an expected glaze of apricot jam as is traditional. There were two cakes. One was chocolate, which was very fudgy and moist however, it really could have used a pinch of salt to bring its profile up to delicious. The other cake was a slice of either apple or banana??? Flavor so faint I couldn't tell. Neither of those desserts had frosting so can they really be called cake? There was a sugar cookie but I gave it to My friend so I can't speak to how it was. There was this little chocolate thing that was difficult to ascertain what it was supposed to be. I think it was supposed to represent hot chocolate with peppermint and marshmallows, but despite the peppermint and the tiny marshmallows, it was lackluster. The entire experience could have improved with printed menus with descriptions of what we had. There were two teas offered, the Jefferson and the Richmond blend. I had the Richmond blend. It was so splendid that I ordered some from their supplier. Overall, I was terribly disappointed. The beautiful venue had a slight effect on improving the overall experience.

The toilet ran after flushing unless I went back and gave the handle a little jiggle. There were no electrical outlets in the bathroom -- none! I had to plug in my electric toothbrush on one of the nightstands. There was a double electrical outlet at the desk, but the refrigerator plug covered part of the second outlet, so I had to unplug the refrigerator to plug in my laptop. (Fortunately, I had no need for the fridge.) The room was chilly when I got there, but I couldn't figure out how to set the HVAC for heat. The only plus was that the bed was very comfortable. But that was not enough to make up for all the other shortcomings. I do not recommend this hotel. It is very expensive and not anywhere near worth it.

I used to live in the Fan/Museum District, and I love this place because it is in such a good location, right next to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (which I highly recommend as well!), as well as walking distance to shops and restaurants in Carytown, the Fan, etc. We stayed in the carriage house the first time and the house itself the second time. Both were very cozy, with lots of amenities, such as bathrobes, bottled water, and coffee pot/tea in the room. The breakfast in the morning is phenomenal. It is made to order, with eggs, bacon, various rolls, oatmeal, coffee, etc. and served in the house's dining room. The staff is absolutely lovely and so welcoming. Another added bonus is that they provide tickets for admission to the special exhibit at the VMFA, as well as passes to get a free drink in their cafeteria. Love, love, LOVE this place. It's within walking distance of Richmond's greatest museums as well as the popular Carytown neighborhood where we spent much of our visit. When we arrived, Sean and Polly weren't at home, but we were provided with an access code to get in to the guest rooms. We were absolutely floored when we walked in. The One only has two guest rooms, which makes it the perfect place for privacy. Our room, The Dream Suite, is located at the top of the stairs and is beautifully decorated in shades of deep red. My only very minor gripe is that the bathrooms are no located "en suite." Instead, they are directly outside the rooms. So while each bedroom does have its own bathroom, you do need to leave your room to get to it. Not a huge deal since there are only two guest rooms...but you can't traipse to the bathroom naked at 2am, either! The parlor is located across the hall from the guest rooms and is not only a comfortable lounge spot, but is also stocked full of snacks and beverages. This is also where continental breakfast is served in the morning. The spread is pretty standard- muffins, bagels, cereal, etc. It didn't particularly suit my fancy (way too carb-heavy), but it's the type of breakfast my boyfriend loves. Sean and Polly were fantastic hosts; very attentive and friendly. Honestly, they were the best B&B owners I have ever interacted with. You can tell that they truly love what they do. We can't wait to go back to Richmond to spend another night at The One. Thanks to Polly and Sean for a great stay!

Room was a suite with separate sitting room, mini fridge, microwave and bathroom. Bed was very comfy. Breakfast was free (and one of the selling points we looked for when booking) from 6:30am-9:30am and consisted of usual fare: Omelets, pancakes, sausage, cereal, bagels/muffins, yogurt, fruit and juices/coffee. Only real downside is its not the most up to date room wise and felt kind of cold with large industrial doors. Not a huge issue for us, but others might knock it. Parking is also a bit of a tight squeeze, located under the hotel on the ground and level 1. We drive a sedan and had some issues getting out of the car with other cars/SUVs parked close. Doable but it could use respacing.
