Low value and chintzy earns Captain D's my "NOT Recommended" designation…read more I recognize that this location just recently opened, but the employees were clearly overwhelmed and under trained. At lunch time I would expect adequate staffing, especially immediately after their grand opening. This restaurant's food service fell well short of expectations. The food was poor quality at premium prices. The fish fillets tasted similar to Long John Silvers, but at a fraction of the size. The hush puppies were traditional. Unfortunately, I can't find anything complimentary to say about anything else. The stuffed crab was tiny and pasty. The shrimps were shrimpy, as in small, and over cooked. The fried okra was soggy, and the corn on the cob looked like it may have been cooked last week. But, none of that gets under my skin as quickly as doling out ketchup a few tiny squeeze packages at a time as though it's a rare and valuable commodity. It's a freakin condiment for pete's sake! To top it all off, I had one order made to go, and we found out much later that it wasn't made correctly. The ambiance is a smart and clean fast food restaurant with limited seating. It appears to seat maybe 25 customers. As cramped as the dining area is, it appears that the service and kitchen area is even worse. I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish by restricting the footprint like that. So, my experience at Captain D's fell well short of a earning my recommendation and continued patronage. In my opinion the word "chintzy" best describes every aspect of this restaurant.

Portillo's is typically a hit or miss with us here…read more Depending on what you get will actually determine how you like the food. We always get the [Jumbo] Hot dog, which is not as big as you'd expect, but it's tasty. We enjoyed eating the Jumbo Chili Cheese Dog, Char-Grilled Maxwell Street Polish Sausage, and the Char-Grilled Polish Sausage. These are all the hot dogs we typically order. We're not fans of the Italian Beef Sandwich nor the Big Beef Sandwich; they typically have a lot of gravy in them. The Char-Grilled Italian Sausage Sandwich wasn't worth it. If you side the gravy and don't add peppers (an extra charge), you'd literally just get the bread and the sausage. The fries and onion rings are usually mediocre, but it's good served as a meal. On the other hand, the staff has always been kind, both in-house and drive-thru. The place has never been too crowded.

It was one of those places you just kept going back to because the food was consistently great and it felt like a true Chicago institution. So when Portillo's finally came to Texas, I was thrilled. Let's start with the star of the show...the Italian Beef with hot peppers. It's incredible. Order it dipped and you will be in food heaven. And if you really want the ultimate Chicago move, make it a combo by adding the Maxwell Street sausage. That combination is absolute perfection. Messy, bold, and ridiculously good. Of course, the Chicago-style hot dogs are outstanding too. Just make sure you order it the right way and "drag it through the garden." That means the full lineup of toppings, just like they do in Chicago. It's the real deal. The sides are fantastic as well. The crinkle-cut fries are always solid, and the onion rings are super crispy and addictive. If you're trying to behave a little, the chopped salad is my wife's favorite. It's fresh, loaded with flavor, and honestly one of the best salads you'll get anywhere. And here's the surprise for people who haven't tried it...the hamburger is fantastic. Big, meaty, juicy, and full of flavor. I'll say it plainly. It's better than just about any fast-food or fast-casual burger out there. Bottom line...Portillo's isn't just another restaurant. It's a Chicago legend that delivers every single time. I'm glad Texas finally got the memo.
