H-E-B is more mid-market, Joe V's is the bargain end, and Central Market is the crown jewel. And honestly, shopping here is an experience. Much like IKEA, the store is designed to lead you through the entire place, so you're constantly seeing something else that makes you think, "Oh, I need that." They carry tons of regional specialties, including plenty that aren't even from Texas, plus an impressive selection of prepared foods. The bakery is lovely, and the meat section is downright glorious. We happened to be here at the tail end of Hatch chile season, which is apparently a VERY real thing. Every August, Central Market celebrates with about two weeks of Hatch chile everything. We're talking marinated meats, salsas, chips, cheeses, dips, even cookies. Basically, if they can put a Hatch chile in it, they will. We bought a few things to take home and try later, but we also grabbed an Asian chicken wrap with sweet potato fries from the cafe. Delicious, and easily enough for two people to split. Come hungry, come curious, and give yourself plenty of time. This is not a "run in for milk" kind of grocery store.

When our family called them to complain, they completely ignored us. So if you need high quality Walmart, avoid the ghetto one at Hwy 121 and use the Grapevine one up north off 114 and 26. I was frustrated because construction workers had closed off and taped plastic sheets over the soda aisle and that was one of the main items on my list. I told the young man at the register that they should have waited until the store was closed. He bluntly asked what I wanted and I said, "soda but they have the whole aisle taped over." In a very slow, deliberate, unfriendly (condescending) tone he said, "what do you want and maybe I can get it for you." I appreciate his willingness to get my soda, but there was no "sorry for the inconvenience, let me see if I can get it" or any politeness in his voice. He brought back the soda and despite my feelings, I thanked him. He didn't acknowledge my thanks so when we were finished with the transaction, I thanked him again. He just stared at me until I left. I'm in the customer service business myself and no matter how frustrated a customer is, I never condescend to them or treat them any way but politely. Please let the young man know that his interaction with me left a really bad taste in my mouth, and I really considered taking my $500 a week to Kroger from now on. But the rest of your staff are almost always very polite so I'll give you all another chance.
