My friends and I were looking for a late night po boy, and this was one of the only places open and not insanely busy. This is very much a hole in the wall place. It's basically a convenience/liquor store with a kitchen to order food. You order at the main register. I got the shrimp po boy. Last night 3 of my visiting out of town friends decided to stay in and order food. It came quick...to our horror! We ordered the roast beef poboy. The bread was dry, the meat was drier & salty as hell with no gravy. I took one bite and needed some water. Also ordered a $30 muffaletta, which bun I could have used as a blunt weapon. With olive salad that had so much excess oil I could've used as lube. I don't understand how this place gets such good reviews. It's supposedly a Quarter legend, more like Legend of Sleepy hollow. Food was ok. It did take what felt like a long time but to be fair we ordered 6 sandwiches and 5 sides. I had the chicken salad in croissant. It was good. I enjoyed it but not enough to come back. I don't care for pickles in my chicken salad. But this has olives and red peppers? I also got the fries and Mac and cheese. The fries were basic but not good. Frozen fries? Hidden on bourbon street is this gem of a store- liquor, food, snacks and more! The gentlemen at the front door was nice and helped me in making a decision for my meal. SKIDDING TOWARD DISGUSTING Sadly, no longer a quality bodega. I suggested that a newbie to New Orleans get a burger here - it used to be one of the best in the Quarter. Not only was it poor quality (like a Carnival food truck) but it took forever to make. As to atmosphere - I don't know how it passes health inspection tests. I RARELY leave one-star reviews cos it just seems mean but I have to be honest is all it really is. The food reminds me of being in a school or hospital or some other kind of systematic institution. I think I paid $18 for classic slices of white bread with parkay butter on it - kinda like that "I bet you can't believe it's butter" spray from the 90s. Fried shrimp was kinda rubbery and hard. There were some fries that were just the kind of thing you picture a bored kid throwing around cos they are worthless for eating. Mind you this was after midnight when everything is supposed to taste more delicious, too! All new Quartermaster with new owners and updated menu. The Nellie Deli was purchased by the owners of Lafite's up the street. The interior has been completely redone and updated. I ordered one of my standards, the club sandwich and it came perfect and dirt cheap as always. Gone is the cold food counter and the burger has almost doubled in price but for the most part its the same old Quartermaster. Best thing about new owners is that they now accept credit cards. Attempted to make a $25 food and drink purchase with a $50 bill. Was told they could not break a $50. Watched cashier open drawer and saw that he had ample change. More than just a quick convenient store, they sell fantastic hot meals made to order. I had a breakfast sandwich from here as well as the catfish dinner with a side of jambalaya and Mac and cheese. Everything was absolutely delicious. Talk about a secret gem. I have eaten at several restaurants in the French Quarter and I will tell you hands down the jambalaya here was the absolute best I have ever had! EVER!!! A FQ staple for me as I have used their late-night kitchen often when I have had the munchies. Double cheeseburger late at night? Yes please but can you add bacon to it? Sure thing. Yup their burgers are quite delish. Try them or one of their po-boys. The shrimp po-boy is big and tasty. Delivery is slow (40mins quote which actually means closer to an hr) and placing an order over the phone takes patience as they are usually swamped after midnight and the person answering the phone is usually overwhelmed. Shouted at and kicked out for entering while wearing a mask during an ongoing global pandemic. I feel like should be my own free choice at any time (and what does it matter to him anyway?) but the guy at the counter was adamant that I couldn't come in with a mask. For context, I teach around 170 college-age international students from around the world each semester in two different states so I am in contact with a lot of people who could potentially spread the virus (and do because they live in dorms and frat houses). Although there has been a drop in cases I am always watching cases in Europe and Asia--and they are on the rise--so I wear a blue hospital-style mask as a precaution. I told him that was absurd that I had to take it off. From what the guy was shouting at me as he ran at me from the counter cursing it seemed like he doesn't believe in the virus. I wonder if he is also against washing hands? So, as other reviews have stated, the late-night cashier is violently rude. I think he may have PTSD or a mental illness because he will flip his lid and charge at customers at the drop of a hat. I had ordered sandwiches earlier in the day and they were okay but unless you want an experience that will ruin your night you should probably steer clear after dark. Its 2am and you just can't eat another piece of seafood, or beingets or true New Orleans cuisine. What do you do? Ask the front desk clerk who delivers? He recommends this place or a pizza joint. The lady running the cash register pointed me to a sign that said it's cash only and to place my order at the back counter. The guy that was cooking the food was talking to another guy, about basically, how he's helped out one of their friends for the last time, and was not allowing himself to feel any sympathy for said friend latest run of bad luck and it's nothing the other guy can say that's going to change his mind. He then asked me what I wanted to order. I place my order for wings and salad. He never inquired how many wings I wanted, so maybe they only sell one portion size. Within a few mins, I had my food and a couple other people had come in to place an order. Overall, the wings weren't anything special, but they hit the spot, when you just cant take another bite of true New Orleans seafood, and the salad was basically some lettuce and three cherry tomatoes upon which he gave me a pack of Kraft blue cheese dressing. That dressing itself earns them 1 star since that is my preferred salad dressing and for it to be in a carry out size packet....made this late night run a little more impressive. I paid cash, and explained to the cashier, how I just really wanted something different to eat, and she recommended a place to me that she'd ate at once before, that was real southern cooking, when I asked her the name or location, she gave it to me, but admitted that she wasn't sure, since it'd been years since she'd been there. read more

I rented on the same block as this place for 25+ years and "the Nelly Deli" sucked and was a disgusting, decrepit place with surly, unfriendly staff. We only used it for packaged beverages, but never food. Times have changed! Quartermaster is now under new ownership and has been completely renovated and cleaned up. I had a fantastic muffuletta sandwich from there on my recent visit, and other great dishes as well. We used to be Verti Marte fans. Now Verti Marte has declined -- but Quartermaster is a great new resource for the neighborhood, a phoenix from the ashes!! Serious yum. read more

Well where to begin. Is it the rude service or the overpriced food that is mediocre at best? The staff, if they decide they don't like you, (not sure what their standards are ) will give little attention to you. The. They talk on their phones or to each other instead of customer service. Also I believe the owner was price gouging me for a while. She would just look at me and not say anything, but the price on the same meal changed one day. I asked if she had missed something but she said no. I guess she finally rung it up correctly. I had to eat there for a bit due to the fact that I am working walking distance away. Stopped in to grab a muffuletta before departing the Big Easy. The half sandwich is enormous! Loaded with deli meats and piled high with flavorful olives and other good stuff.
